The members of the Babylon Lions Club will be flipping pancakes and cooking eggs and sausage to raise money for local causes on April 14th, just as they have been doing for the past 44 years. “This is a great family event that our neighbors look forward to every year,” said Club President Charlie Creegan. The club has served up to 600 breakfasts in a six hour cooking marathon that is a labor of love for club members. “As our longest running event, every member is involved in making it a success,” added Creegan. The cost of the event is still just $6 per person and includes all you can eat pancakes, plus grilled sausage, scrambled eggs, juice, milk and coffee. Babylon High School juniors Jed Dale, Max Pitagno and Matt Taggart placed second in their division at the Junior Varsity Long Island Science and Engineering Fair competition at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury for their science research project, The Efficacy of a Biomechanical Inductor Utilizing the FlagellaPowered, Magnetically Coordinated Movement of Nickel Sulfate-Enriched, Nickel-Resistant Pseudomonas putida. Eleventh-graders Sara Mikovic, Emily Wardell and Meredith Wardell also took part in the competition, as the six students represented Babylon in the school’s first participation in a competitive science research fair. “We

are so proud of this accomplishment,” said Babylon High School science research teacher Claire Birone, who oversaw the students at the event. “This was Babylon’s first time competing, and our first-ever science research award!” LISEF is a competition for the most advanced high school projects, and its participants have the opportunity to present to professionals in the field from local universities and scientific institutions. TOWN OF BABYLON HOME DOWN PAYMENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM FOR FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS

NOTICE OF APPLICATION AVAILABILITY AND INTAKE As part of an ongoing commitment to help make the "American Dream" of home ownership a reality for first time homebuyers who wish to reside in the Town of Babylon, Supervisor, Rich Schaffer announced that the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), as agent for the Town of Babylon, will be making applications available for first-time homebuyers for down payment/ closing cost assistance towards the purchase of a principal residence. Under provisions of a federally funded program, Supervisor Rich Schaffer has set aside HOME Investment Partnership Funds provided by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Town of Babylon will provide eligible first time homebuyers with up to $14,000 towards down payment/closing costs towards the purchase of an eligible new or existing singlefamily home, provided that the applicant puts a minimum down payment of at least $3,000. The applicant must also be able to satisfy the mortgage lender’s minimum down payment requirements and be able to secure a mortgage. Homeowners are required to reside in the home for a minimum of 5 years or HUD will require a full repayment of the grant.

Eligibility Criteria: An Applicant MUST be: I. First Time Homeowner - as deﬁned by HUD as a household that has not owned a home during the three year period immediately prior to purchase of a residence with HOME assistance funding. II. Family occupying the property as a Principal Residence. III. Income Eligible Family - meaning a prospective buyer must have a gross annual income not exceeding the income limits for the area as listed below with overtime and assets also taken into consideration.

Throughout the week, various activities were offered to promote cultural awareness and allow for research and discussion about the many languages and cultures of the world. Students were encouraged to search for shamrocks to receive their pot o’ gold on Monday, took a chance for a piñata prize the next day, then found the Eiffel Towers around the school for a French--inspired reward, and finally spun the “Wheel of Pizza” for prizes on Thursday. They turned in their stamped their Foreign Language Week passports on the final day of the week for a chance to win New York Yankees tickets. Students also worked all week on a trivia quest, answering questions posted outside of teachers’ classrooms as part of their international journey. Once completed, their passports were stamped by a language teacher and they were entered into a drawing to win the tickets.

Babylon High School celebrated National Foreign Language Week by decorating the school lobby and cafeteria with banners that highlighted a different country each day. The students celebrated Ireland on Monday, March 4th, followed by Mexico, France and Italy. The last day of the week served as International Day, to pay homage to all the countries around the globe. “Students were exposed to international music, while enjoying a cafeteria menu catered to the country being highlighted each day,” said Babylon High School world languages teacher Michelle Scharff. “Morning announcements had an international twist, with the greeting spoken in the language of the day, along with fun facts about the culture. On the final day of the celebration, students enjoyed an international dessert buffet in the bistro, provided by members of the World Language Club.”

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Elementary students in the West Babylon Union Free School District recently honored the birthday of author Theodor Seuss Geisel, more famously known to readers as Dr. Seuss. The celebration of his birth took place in conjunction with the nationally recognized Read Across America Day, the nation’s largest reading celebration supported by the National Education Association. On March 1st, students immersed themselves in the world of Dr. Seuss and took part in several Seuss-themed activities throughout the day. Exploring the works of Dr. Seuss, students used his characters and unique writing style to discuss a myriad of literacy themes, including creative writing and rhyming. Some students used the technology available to them to participate in learning games such as “Dr. Seuss Jeopardy,” while others got their hands dirty and explored the states of matter by creating “oobleck,” the gooey green substance referenced in the Dr. Seuss classic “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.” “Dr. Seuss has always had a wonderful way of using fun characters and silly stories to engage young readers, and today we honor that tradition,” commented Debbie LoSardo, a first-grade teacher at the district’s South Bay Elementary School.

Joys Of Reading The students of West Babylon Union Free School District annually celebrate the joys of reading during the Parents As Reading Partners celebrations held throughout the district. PARP is a national program that encourages parents to read with their children for at least 15 minutes daily, stressing the fact that reading can be fun as well as informative. Each school within the district honors this month in a myriad of ways. Most begin with a kickoff celebration in which parents and teachers – or an outside performing group, such as the

Agostino Arts Bodacious Book Shows – present a program for students that introduces the PARP theme for the month and encourages students’ daily reading in a way that is fun and memorable. Students are urged to maintain a reading log with their parents for the month and are invited to participate in a variety of evening events with their parents, such as Reader’s Theater performances, Library Day, Bedtime Story Hour and the Great Read Aloud. Additional activities highlighting literacy are held throughout the month to reinforce

students’ love of reading, such as spirit days, author visits and the annual Reading Marathon, in which members of the district and local community demonstrate the importance of reading by visiting classrooms and sharing their favorite children’s books with students. This year, guest readers included Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley, Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaeffer, Board of Education President Diane Thiel and Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Yiendhy Farrelly.
