The pajama donations were a community service project of the Girl Scout troops, where they created a marketing campaign to solicit donations of new pajamas for domestic violence victims.

The West Babylon Senior High School Music Department boasts of many talented students.

Some display their talents during band and chorus performances, while others share them with the community from the stage.

The district’s theater program has been recognized in the community in past years.

District performers and performances have been the recipients of several Town of Babylon Toby Awards that identify the best among teen theater performances in several categories.

The district has collected

Tobys for Outstanding Set Crew in 2010, 2011 and 2012 for performances of Footloose, Seussical and Sweeney Todd. In both 2011 and 2012, Seussical and Sweeney Todd received awards for Outstanding Production Value, and in 2012, student Tyler Smalling earned Best Supporting Actor for his “Sweeney Todd” role.

Most recently, Tyler led a cast of talented students as he portrayed Jesus in the spring musical performance of Stephen Schwartz’s Godspell. The performance consisted of a 31-member cast, 30-member stage crew and eight-piece pit orchestra.

Suffolk County Legislator Lou D’Amaro and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department recently gave community members the opportunity to safely hand over their unused or expired medications for proper disposal by hosting a “Shed The Meds” event at the North Babylon Public Library.

A steady stream of local residents participated in the March 6th program, designed to keep unwanted medications out of the hands of potential abusers and away from the groundwater.

Two

Suffolk County deputy sheriffs accepted the medications during the two-hour event. Due to the program’s success, another is being planned for the future. Residents who missed the event and have medications in need of disposal are encouraged to bring them to any Suffolk County police precinct, 24 hours a day for placement in anonymous drop boxes Medications should be removed from their prescription bottles and placed in a plastic bag.

109, West Babylon Second Precinct, 1071 Park Avenue, Huntington “Prescription drug misuse continues to rise, and we have to remain vigilant to protect both our residents and the environment,” Legislator D’Amaro said. “I would like to thank the North Babylon residents for coming out and supporting this event and both the Sheriff’s Department and North Babylon Library for being such accommodating hosts.”

400 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Last week, out of sheer curiosity, I decided to go through my column archive to see just how many I had published up to this point. Wouldn’t you know, last week marked #399, making this week’s column quite a mini-milestone. Nearly eight years of writing In Step… wow, time sure does fly. In honor of the occasion, I thought I’d resurrect my very first column, published July 27th, 2005…

Living The Dream As I write these words, the calendar has flipped to exactly one year, two months and eleven days since my graduation from C.W. Post on May 9th, 2004. At that time, never could I have imagined that I would soon be working for the very newspaper I had grown up reading as a lifelong resident of Lindenhurst.

And yet here I am; an editor and sometimes writer for none other

than South Bay’s Neighbor.

The majority of college graduates I have come into contact with seem to all have the same lofty, if materialistic, goal – to become rich and famous doing… well, anything that comes along.

If it happens to be even remotely related to that field which they studied through four years of school, that’s a mere bonus. So long as the money comes rolling in, cash-flow and happiness are seemingly one and the same.

I, on the other hand, have always ascribed to a much more simplistic, if perhaps slightly idealistic, principle – I feel as long as I am fortunate enough to make a decent living doing something I truly love and have genuine talent in, then why shouldn’t I be content going to work each and every day?

Fast forward from my graduation through a year of highs and lows, from voluntarily taking four months off to enjoy “my last official summer vacation

ever,” as I relentlessly reminded all who would listen, to involuntarily remaining unemployed – save for my part-time jobs at The Little Flower Shop and Diane’s Dance Center - through eight more months of fruitless job searching.

And then, at long last, the light at the end of the tunnel…a call from South Bay’s Neighbor, willing to give a Journalism grad a shot with their ever-expanding newspaper.

Imagine that, an opportunity to gain experience in the field instead of being turned away for my lack of it. How exactly is one supposed to gain any semblance of hands-on expertise if no one will give him/her an opportunity to shine? At some point along the way, someone has to take a chance on you.

How lucky I am that South Bay’s Neighbor decided to take a chance on me. I began my first full week of work on May 9th, 2005, exactly one year to the day after I graduated from college. I guess some things are just meant to be.

Multicultural Celebration

For more than eight years, the North Babylon School District has been celebrating the diversity of its community through the annual Multicultural Celebration. The nearly three-hour event invites community residents to the high school to enjoy an assortment of activities, crafts and music.

This year, students from a number of the district’s schools and clubs sponsored a variety of stations focusing on

specific cultures. Members of the high school’s National Honor Society welcomed all guests and handed out multicultural certificates, while Art Club members hosted a face painting station, Life Skills students helped visitors created Chilean rain sticks, and the Students for a Better World club supplied cookies representing flags from multiple nations.

Elementary students from Belmont and Marion G. Vedder painted guests to

their stations with Native American body art and created multicultural buttons, Polynesian leis and Guatemalan worry dolls. Additionally, William E. DeLuca and Woods Road English as a Second Language students sponsored a station that allowed those in attendance to create country flags.

Culminating the night was a performance by Napoleon Revels-Bey, who presented his “Rhythm Kings – Al Andalusia to Dizzy” program.

“Tonight is a celebration of our various cultures,” stated Dr. Maureen Fallon, director of social studies and language arts, who organized the event. “Our goal is to keep our own identities, but to also take the time to enjoy and respect the cultures of those around us.”

Recently, County Executive Bellone and Domestic Violence Agencies applauded the donation of over 200 pairs of pajamas from Girl Scout Troops 1236 and 363 of Babylon Village to domestic violence shelters in Suffolk County.

The pajama donations were a community service project of the girl scout troops where they created a marketing campaign to solicit donations of new pajamas for domestic violence victims. The Babylon Memorial Grade School participated in the pajama donation and helped the girl scout troop collect over 200 pair of pajamas.

“The Girl Scouts are a premier agency for young women helping them to build courage, confidence and character,” said County Executive Bellone. “This community service project, under the leadership of troop leaders Heather Tenety and Marylee Hoge, truly provided an opportunity to educate the girl scouts about a relevant issue affecting women, children and families and provided an opportunity for the girl scouts to be of service to others.”

As the girl scout troop was preparing for their community service project the troop leaders took the opportunity to educate their troop on a civic issue, domestic violence and the need for them to be of service to victims of domestic violence. The troop became very excited about their project and worked extremely hard to encourage donations of pajamas.
