Recipe Of The Week: Chicken Barley Soup

Everyone knows there’s no cure for the common cold. Though colds can strike at any time, cold season tends to occur when the weather cools down and people spend more time indoors. Inside viruses can circulate and spread more easily, thus leading to elevated rates of infection. Though there might be no cure for the common cold, that does not mean people are helpless against it. Many people have their own remedies to help them manage and potentially shorten the duration of a cold, and chicken soup features prominently in those antidotes. Whether cold season is kicking into high gear or people are confronting the common cold at other times of year, they can incorporate this recipe for “Chicken Barley Soup” with Vegetables courtesy of Lines+Angles into their cold remedy routines.

Makes 6 servings

8 cups chicken stock

4 cups water

1 teaspoon marjoram

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

Directions:

1 medium onion, sliced

1 cup carrots, sliced

2 cups cooked chicken breasts, diced

1 russet potato, peeled and cubed

1 cup broccoli, chopped

1⁄2 cup barley

Salt, to taste, Pepper, to taste

1. In a large pot, combine chicken stock, water, marjoram, rosemary, and parsley. Simmer for 15 minutes.

2. Add onion, carrots, cooked chicken, potato, broccoli, and barley. Add salt and pepper to taste. Simmer over low heat for 35 to 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. Serve.

Fifth Graders Present A New Twist wOn Classic Fairytales

The fifth graders in Deniz Harned’s class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District shared their creative journey of writing fractured fairytales by presenting their stories to the class on Jan. 9. The project allowed students to unleash their imaginations while also developing important narrative writing skills.

Before they began the writing process, students

created outlines for their fresh interpretations of well-known tales. This step helped them to organize their ideas and plan engaging and original twists. The outlines also detailed the stories’ characters, setting, problem, solution and plot.

To bring their visions to life, students learned how to use Canva, an online graphic design tool. They created eye-catching covers and illustrations that perfectly captured the unique

twists they put on classic fairytales.

The final stage involved walking through the editing process with Ms. Harned. Students received helpful feedback and guidance to help polish the stories. With Ms. Harned’s support, the class enhanced their writing skills and created pieces they were proud to present to their classmates.

Kindergartners Focus On Literacy Skills

FOCUSING ON LITERACY SKILLS - Deauville Gardens West Elementary School kindergartners in the Copiague School District began the new year by focusing on their literacy skills. As part of an interactive assignment, students in Raquel Collado’s class read “Cats Colors” by Jane Cabrera, a book that teaches about different colors, before completing a writing assignment. Using descriptive words and their artistic talents, the kindergartners wrote about one of the many shades they explored in the book, then brought their favorite to life by creating a drawing of an object that best represented the color. In Danielle Jacob’s class, kindergartners learned about the different elements of a story such as setting, characters, plot and theme. After reading the fairytale “The Gingerbread Man,” students focused specifically on its setting. They explored how stories portray this literary element in different ways, then brainstormed unique and exciting places for their gingerbread friend to visit.
