Dr. Hanson encouraged students to eat vegetables and stay away from sweets and soda. Students also became aware of how important teeth are to speech patterns and practiced articulating statements such as, “There’s magic in a healthy smile,” saying the phrase normally at first and then attempting to say it without touching their tongue to their teeth. Following the presentation, students received a new toothbrush to bring home and practice what they had learned.

Suffolk County Community College Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy, Thomas Curtin, was recently announced as the winner of the 2013 Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize Competition for his essay Berkeley’s Conception of Causal Power. Essays were required to be new and unpublished, written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley were directed to be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes was followed. Submissions were blind reviewed and judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. One winner was selected. He specializes in the history of modern philosophy and the philosophy of religion, especially 18th century philosophy of religion. Curtin is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Ammerman Campus philosophy department, having started teaching at Suffolk County Community College in the spring 2012 semester. Dr. Lowell Kleiman, Academic Chair for Suffolk County Community College’s Philosophy Department said, “On behalf of the department, we would like to congratulate Tom on receiving this prestigious and significant award. We are fortunate to have him in our department and gain insights from his hard work, talents and skills.”

at the University of Rochester. A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a “consummate teacher” who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962. Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize. Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.

Since 1987, when President Ronald Regan officially proclaimed March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, we have taken extra steps during this month to raise awareness about the needs and rights of people with disabilities and to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to our communities and society as a whole. The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. March is recognized by groups across the country as an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments and challenges facing people with developmental disabilities and their families. Creative Expressions Morning Walk The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: Edmund Siejka, Seaford Sometimes when I need to get away I know a place Where nature Has protected its own Miles and miles away There is a beach Flat and narrow As a light brown ribbon stretching Out to forever

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured

I want to be there At first light Coffee in hand Smelling the fresh air Walking along the deserted stretch Listening to the rhythm of waves breaking On shore Overhead Noisy seagulls My only companions Way off in the distance Is another solitary figure A dot on the beach Walking slowly Nearby a dog running up and down Barking in the wind

“Bridge To Happiness” Photo by: Bridgette Kistinger, Deer Park

In silence I watch The sun suspended over the ocean Like a beautiful picture There is no more for me to do this morning But to witness the beginning of another day

Cherry Tree Blossoms By: Roberta A. McQueen, Amityville Daybreak cherry blossoms in the pouring rain

hunting and fishing licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “These youth

education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State. DEC applauds our local sportsmen and women, the Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club for their tireless work towards the protection of our environment and natural resources. The 2013 Youth Conservation Program is

the perfect way to introduce children to hunting ethics and to teach them how to be responsible hunters.” Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75-word application. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate or Bow Hunter Education Training Certificate. These certificates

are required in order to purchase a hunting license. Enrollment in the class is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken either their Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education course. For more information or to register for one or both of these sessions, contact the NYS DEC Sportsman Education Office at 631.444.0255.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. BA TAKE VIAGRA/CIALIS? 40 100 mg/20/mg Pills + 4 Free. Only $99! Save $500.00. Call 1-888-796-8878

students enter her class ready to learn and share characteristics of their cultures. In small group settings, students with similar proficiency levels engage in a collaborative learning environment. Ms. Freire infuses core subject areas with elements of culture and individual interests in order to heighten students’ interest and make curriculum topics more relatable. Through a partnership with classroom teachers, Ms. Freire utilizes eBoards as a tool for students to gain constant access to lessons

Students are also introduced to instructional technology aids such as Smart Boards where they are able to master concepts through visual, audio and tactile learning methods. Ms. Freire maintains a connection with students’ parents and guardians, incorporating them in projects such as the construction of comprehensive family trees. In addition, Ms. Freire sends student photos and completed work to family members locally and overseas to share student progress and growth. Classes also work to introduce students to new experiences and include restaurant visits and museum exhibits that help students acclimate and develop as people.
