n an effort to support the four-legged members of their community, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School’s Let’s Make A Difference Club held an Animal Supply Drive. The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads. As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life. After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy. At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback! Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way
back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water. Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list. Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline. Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer. All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very
crucial part in the health of Fire Island, as the beaches elongate and erosion is reversed. This cyclic trend will lead to more room for beachgoers in the 2013 season. Nature isn’t the only thing on the mend after Hurricane Sandy; establishments, such as Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach, are getting ready to open up their doors. There is no doubt that Fire Island will be in “fighting shape” and ready for the masses as we kick off the season with a very solid spring. Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Junior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com

In addition, NEFCU invites Long Islanders to visit the Commack branch in the Commack Corners Shopping Center at 6514 Jericho Turnpike now through April 21st to open a new savings account. For every new saving account opened, NEFCU will donate an additional $5 to the Special Olympics. NEFCU will kickoff this event with a special celebration on Friday, April 12th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Commack branch where supporters can meet competing athletes and enjoy free snacks, fun raffles and music courtesy of WALK-FM. Community participants who volunteer to be “fan in the stands” will also receive a free T-shirt. Ms. Garguilo adds, “As we celebrate our 75th anniversary, we continue our commitment to the local community
and encourage all Long Islanders to attend this important event. In addition, we hope you will join us on Facebook and participate in our Commack branch activities to wish these athletes well as they prepare for the competition. Doing so will help raise additional funds for the Special Olympics.” More than 600 athletes, 200 coaches, 500 volunteers, and 500 spectators from across Long Island will gather for the 2013 Spring Games. Athletes will compete in nine different sports. The sports include several track and field sports, tennis and softball. There will also be a young athlete program for athletes two to seven years old. “We want to thank NEFCU for its continued support this year,” said
Diane Colonna, Regional Director, Long Island Region. “It is through community partners like NEFCU, that we are able to continue to provide quality sportsprograms and competitions for our athletes.” In addition to the competition there will be an activity center where athletes, volunteers and spectators can participate in variousarts and crafts, get information about the Special Olympics and more. The Special Olympics 2013 Spring Games will be at Commack High School on Sunday, April 21st starting with the Opening Ceremonies at 9:30 a.m. For more information or to become a volunteer contact Special Olympics New York, Long Island Region at 631.254.1465 or visit www.nyso.org/longisland.

2013 Spring Games
By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when
you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

In an effort to support the four-legged members of their community, John F. Kennedy Intermediate School’s Let’s Make A Difference Club in the Deer Park School District held an animal supplies drive. Led by adviser Jacqueline Amato, students collected a variety of items to be donated to the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter. Students volunteered their lunchtime to man the donation station and enticed their peers to participate by providing raffle tickets with the chance to win prizes in exchange for donations made. Through the generous efforts of the school, the club donated many essential products, including food, pet shampoo, toys, biscuits and treats, grooming tools, blankets and towels to comfort the shelter animals until they find their forever homes.

(NAPSI)-Doing a little homework before you travel could save you time at the airport. For instance, visiting www.TSA.gov, the Transportation Security Administration’s Web site, can help you learn what items can be packed in carry-on and which are best left in checked suitcases. You can also
learn size requirements for toiletries that are allowed on planes and then find properly sized items in stores. As a final tip, remember that all carry-on gels, liquids and aerosols need to be placed in a 1-quart, single zip-top, clear plastic bag. For more information and tips, visit www.shave. com.

fun and educational opportunities to children through community events and celebrations. In the past month, BUDDY hosted trips to the Autoseum and the Ringling Brothers Circus. In addition, events like the Holiday Celebration and Back-to-School Picnic meet not only the social needs of the kids, but provide much needed school supplies, Christmas gifts and winter clothing. LICADD’s Community Engagement Coordinator Lauren Ventimiglia, LMSW, who facilitates mentor trainings and matches, explained why she loves working with the BUDDY program, “Our mentors meet with these kids a few hours a week, and might seem like such a small thing but it’s much more than that. In most cases, our mentees aren’t receiving that positive support at home. For our kids, it’s an opportunity to break free from the stress of having a parent in jailthey have time to be a kid again.” Children of incarcerated parents often experience a range of emotions related to a parent’s arrest and/or incarceration, including fear, anger, sadness, abandonment, embarrassment, guilt, resentment, isolation and withdrawal from family and friends. Family instability, trauma linked to witnessing the parent’s arrest, incarceration and/ or criminal activities and uncertainty about the future challenge even the most resilient children. BUDDY seeks to break the cycle and ensure that Long Island’s most at-risk children get the help and encouragement they need to be successful. Without assistance, many of these children are at increased risk for poor academic performance, drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and juvenile justice or criminal justice system involvement. “Thanks to the generosity of Adelphi’s PACT students, we can continue to make sure that these resources are available,” stated LICADD Executive Director Jeffrey Reynolds, Ph.D., CEAP,
SAP. “It is particularly inspiring to learn that the support of BUDDY and our mentees came from college students as they are the future leaders of Long Island. I find it encouraging to see our young people so willing to share their time and resources in order to help others in their community.” Interested in Learning More About BUDDY? The BUDDY Program was initially funded by the
federal Administration for Children and Families, but now solely relies on donations and fundraisers. All of our mentors volunteer their time to mentor a young person. If you have four hours a month to mentor a young person between the ages of 4-18, please call Lauren Ventimiglia, LMSW at 516.747.2606 for more information and an application.

The Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) was named the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Foundation Philanthropic Action for Challenging Times (PACT). The program is in partnership with Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, and the grant will help sustain LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program. Adelphi’s PACT is an extra-curricular initiative of the School of Social Work supported by the Riley Family Foundation through which undergraduate social work students engage in philanthropy as a means of social investment for social impact. PACT partners with non-profits for the purpose of supporting the core mission of social work and to provide opportunities for young social work professionals to engage in philanthropic ventures. “This year, our students were interested in funding agencies that serve the Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Uniondale communities and offer communitybased prevention and intervention programs for children,” stated Adelphi University BSW Program Director Sergio Argueta. “We are pleased to support a program that not only meets that criteria, but is active in engaging high-risk youth in our communities in such a positive way.” BUDDY is a mentoring program for children that have an incarcerated parent or close relative, and live in Nassau and Western Suffolk Counties. The children, or “mentees,” are matched with screened and trained adult volunteers who meet one-on-one on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of establishing a trusting relationship. The mentees and mentors meet for at least a year, but in many cases, the matches are so successful that they continue to meet well beyond the required amount of time. The program currently serves a total of 42 children through direct matches. Beyond the initial matches, the program provides

Chancellor’s Awards
SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented 14 students from Stony Brook University with the 2013 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence on April 4th at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. “The students we honor today have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists and community volunteers,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY, and we honor them with great pride. Congratulations to all the
students being recognized today.” “I am incredibly proud of our students who have won SUNY’s highest student honor,” said Charles Robbins, Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education at Stony Brook University. “We submitted 14 nominations, and all were selected. I consider myself very fortunate to have been with the students, their families and the Chancellor in Albany yesterday.” The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with
accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement or career achievement. Each year campus presidents establish a selection committee that reviews exemplary students. Nominees are forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.
On April 4th, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center hosted a free wellness symposium, A Healthy Serving of Knowledge, offered through its Good Sam University Free Community Lecture Series, at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore. Two hundred guests attended their choice of workshops which offered such information as stress
management practices and how to read food labels. Participants uncovered the truth about diet foods and weight-loss plans including a discussion on surgical options for weight loss. The program included presentations on the concepts of bioindividuality and the importance of creating a personalized diet plan by Chef Keith DiLauro, a graduate of
the French Culinary Institution in New York City, and WCBS-TV health reporter Katie McGee. The program concluded with a cooking demonstration and tasting of Chef Keith’s delicious and healthy fare of seasonal, local, fresh and organic foods. Civic Engagement
Legislator Barraga recently met with representatives from the Long Island Civic Engagement Table, Make the Road New York, and New York Communities for Change. The Long Island Civic Engagement Table (LICET) is a new initiative to transform the culture of civic participation and government accountability in Long Island. LICET is led by Make the Road New York, New York Communities for Change, the Central American Refugee Center, and the Long Island Immigrant
Alliance. LICET’s efforts centered on registering voters, educating voters, and ensuring that issues of concern to working-class communities of color came to the fore through community and candidate forums, training emerging community leaders, and mobilizing voters to the polls. Make The Road New York (MRNY) has fought to ensure respect and dignity for immigrant, poor, and working class New Yorkers. From the early years they have worked to combine
legal services, education, and community to improve the lives of low-income and immigrant New Yorkers. New York Communities for Change is a coalition of working families in low and moderate income communities fighting for social and economic justice throughout New York State. By using direct action, legislative advocacy, and community organizing, NY Communities’ members work to impact the political and economic policies that directly affect them.
Suffolk County Community College has been recognized with a Gold Award for the best print advertising campaign and a Silver Award for best logo design in the 28th Annual Educational Advertising Awards, sponsored by the Higher Education Marketing Report. The Educational Advertising Awards is the largest educational advertising awards competition in the country and more than 3,000 entries were received from upwards of 1,000 colleges, universities and secondary schools from all 50 states and several foreign countries. The College was also recognized with a Silver Paragon Award for the same print advertising campaign by the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations (NCMPR), an affiliate of the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC). NCMPR Paragon Awards recognize outstanding achievement in communications at community colleges and is the only national competition of its kind that exclusively honors excellence among
marketing and PR professionals at two-year colleges. Suffolk’s TV campaign has also received a Telly Award. The campaign portrays recent high school students who have chosen to attend Suffolk; students who successfully have transferred to other recognized four-year institutions; and alumni who are now succeeding in their chosen careers. Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions, and web commercials, videos and films. The Telly Awards is a widely known and highly respected national and international competition and receives over 12,000 entries annually from all 50 states and many foreign countries. Dr. Shaun L. McKay, President of Suffolk County Community College, stated, “We are so proud of our marketing and public relations team. They continue to achieve recognition for developing
communications that reflect the quality of our institution.” The winning print campaign features recent high school students from across Suffolk County who have chosen to start their college careers by attending Suffolk. The Silver Award for logo design was for the recent creation of the Suffolk County Community College Sharks athletics brand identity. Judges consisted of a national panel of higher education marketers, advertising creative directors, marketing professionals and the Board of the Higher Education Marketing Report. “We have wonderful stories to share through our communications,” said Drew Fawcett, Associate Dean for Institutional Advancement. “Our advertising continues to underscore the value that our residents see in Suffolk County Community College.” The campaign was created in-house by the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement.

Restoring your property after a long winter One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties. * Don’t jump the gun. The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But it’s best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which can cause bald spots and the growth of weeds down the road. In addition, stepping on the grass while the ground is still wet can compact the soil, which can slow drainage and block the lawn’s roots from breathing. Patience should prevail with regard to mowing the lawn as well. A lawn’s roots will not start to grow until the average everyday temperature routinely reaches 40 F, so mowing too early is both unnecessary and potentially harmful to the lawn. When the temperatures regularly reach 50 F, then homeowners will likely start to see their lawns growing. * Remove debris that’s piled up. Debris has a tendency to infest a yard over the course of the winter months. Fallen branches, stones and even trash can accumulate in a yard, putting those who spend time in the yard at risk of injury once the warm weather returns. For instance, bits of twigs and pebbles that are blown across the yard during a windy winter can be embedded in the yard, making the yard less of a haven and more of a hazard. Once the grass is dry enough to walk on, walk around the property and remove any debris that’s piled up over the last few months.
* Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout the yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It’s important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins. * Remove thatch. Once the grass has dried, you can begin to remove thatch that’s built up over the winter. Thatch is potentially very harmful to soil, blocking sunlight, air and moisture the soil needs to ensure a lawn looks lush and healthy. Thatch removal does not necessarily need to be an annual task. If thatch buildup is insignificant, then it can be done every other year. Just use a dethatching rake to make the job much easier. * Aerate, particularly if the yard is a heavy traffic area once the warm weather arrives. If your yard transforms into a child’s wonderland upon the arrival of spring and summer, you might want to revive the soil by aerating. When the yard gets heavy usage, it’s easy for soil to become compacted, which makes it hard for air and water to reach the lawn’s roots. That can eventually make for a less-than-appealing lawn. So if your yard is the place to be come the warmer months, aerate in the spring to loosen the soil and make it easier for the lawn to withstand the months ahead. No matter how harsh the winter months might have been, spring is a great time for homeowners to restore the property around their homes.

How to edge a lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Well-defined edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is definitely worth the effort. * Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby. * Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that
gets kicked up while you’re working. * Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough. * Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to start edging. When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.

Prepare a deck or patio for entertaining Few things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host parties or intimate gatherings all year long. Establishing an entertaining space and maintaining that space are essential when planning another year of fun in the sun. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the season approaches, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. * Check the area for any needed repairs. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails flush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult with a contractor. * Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie’s List to read reviews of his or her work.
for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don’t forget to establish a spot for the kids to converge with scaleddown amenities. * Consider a fireplace or fire pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fire for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fireplace, pit or chiminea is a conversation-starter, a decorative focal point, and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. Place the fire wisely and with concern for safety. It should be out of the way of foot traffic, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point. * Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today’s yards are extensions of a home’s interior. Guests no longer want to sit on uncomfortable metal or plastic furniture. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look. * Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors. When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.

Dog Show Set this special competition. Although the dogs will be judged based on American Kennel Club standards, this is an exhibition, so no points will be awarded. Obedience judging starts at 9:30 a.m. for the Utility, Open and Novice categories. In Obedience, dogs must perform commands given by their masters. This is followed
by the judging for Rally in the Novice, Advanced and Excellent categories. In a rally, the dog and its owner must run through a course with a variety of designated stations that tell them the next skill to be performed. Junior Showmanship judging starts at 11:30 a.m. Judging on conformation - in which dogs will be judged based on their
characteristics which most closely conform to AKC standards - begins at noon. Judged categories at this time include Hounds & Pee Wee Junior Showmanship; Herding & Working; Terriers; Sporting & NonSporting; Toys & Junior Showmanship; Best Puppy in Show; Best Adult in Match; and Best in Match. “We are pleased to have

shelters and transport networks in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets. Last Hope placed 300 dogs and 646 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2012. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Kentucky dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter

currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized. Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a Coonhound named Valentine that they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Kentucky dogs and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. We can continue to make a difference for dogs at home, plus dogs from faraway.”
I BUY HOUSES!!! The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more than 8,000 local animal-welfare partners across the country, the foundation donates approximately $15 million a year to make a difference in the lives of millions of animals. The organization is funded through donations raised during fundraisers conducted in Petco’s more than 1,200 stores across the country, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions. Money raised helps fund animalwelfare organizations, spay and neuter efforts, animalassisted therapy programs and humane education. The majority of the funds raised remain in the communities where they were raised, and the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal-welfare efforts. In 2012, the Petco Foundation surpassed $100 million in funds raised for companion animals since the organization was created. To learn more, visit www.petcofoundation.org.
