What Would you Do...

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course.

And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really.

Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really?

Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot?

For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life.

Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no?

Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

With a 10-1 home-field victory over Centereach on May 3rd, the East Islip varsity baseball team clinched the Suffolk County League IV title for 2013.

Nick Osburn blasted a two-RBI double in East Islip’s action-packed 10-run second inning, staking out a 6-0 lead for the Redmen. Mike Demarest pitched a threehitter, allowing only one run with eight strikeouts and one walk. The team had previously vanquished Centereach by equally dominant scores on both May 1st (17-4) and April 30th (14-3).

“Winning the League IV title is an outstanding achievement that the players should be proud of,” said coach Sal Ciampi.

“They have put themselves in position to make a run at the county title.”

East Islip’s record stands at 16-2 in conference play and 18-2 overall as they march into the playoffs. A pair of wins over Copiague on May 10th earned them top seed in Suffolk County.

In the first game of the doubleheader, the Redmen came out ahead by an 8-1 score. Demarest pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and no walks.

Casey Stengel went 3-for4, hitting three RBIs, while Nick Osburn went 3-for-4 and hit two runs and two RBIs. East Islip shellacked Copiague 15-1 in the second game, with pitcher Dave Palmer throwing a two-hitter with five strikeouts, allowing only one earned run. Nick Osburn hit two runs and two RBIs, going 2-for-3, and Ken Rotunno hit two runs and three RBIs, going 2-for-5.

The doubleheader victories ensured that East Islip was ranked first in the Large Schools bracket in Suffolk County’s Class AA playoffs.

The Redmen will face the winner of the May 14 Half Hollow Hills West vs.

Connetquot contest, and will play at East Islip on May 15 at 4 p.m.

Ride For Life Rides By Chris Pendergast and his Ride for Life fundraiser paid an inspirational visit to East Islip Middle School on May 9th. As Pendergast departed from the front of the middle school, heading to his next stop at West Islip High School, the middle school’s students gathered outside to cheer him on and a small band played.

The mission of

Pendergast’s charity group is to help advance research in finding a cure for ALS, to support patients and their families, and to provide ALS-related information.

At Ride for Life’s annual event, ALS patients ride their power wheelchairs on local roads and highways, accompanied by supporters in an effort to raise funds for a cure and create awareness for their disease.

According to teacher librarian Valerie Ware, the middle school’s National Junior Honor Society Committee – led by members Samantha Carroll, Julia Fusco, Jackie Ginty and Victoria Goldfader – raised $528 for the Ride for Life cause as part of the NJHS’s efforts to help cure ALS.

Providing a focused display of the school’s senior student-artists’ unique talents, the annual East Islip High School Festival of Fine Art was held during the week of April 15th.

A large crowd of happy students and proud parents, friends and teachers celebrated the creative spirit evoked by the festival at the event’s April 18th evening reception at the high school’s library.

“The reception is always the highlight and culminating event of our festival,” said East Islip art teacher William Melendez, who is retiring after this school year. “The seniors displayed their amazing work with pride.”

“The festival showcased the hard work and artistic talents of the students of East Islip, and I am extremely proud of the students’ work,” added art teacher Heather Toomey.

“There was a wonderful

turnout this year.”

“The art show had record attendance,” agreed Stephen Guarino, the district’s director of art and music. “It was the most crowded I’ve ever seen it.”

Toomey emphasized the group effort needed to present the festival. “There is also a lot of behind-thescenes work that goes into set-up and break-down,” she explained. “The entire art department appreciates the custodial staff as well as the library for allowing us to display the student artwork.”

She also acknowledged the many years of contributions by Melendez to both the school’s art program and the festival. “It was especially bittersweet to also celebrate Mr. Melendez’s retirement and his last Festival of the Arts at East Islip,” she said.

The East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy partnered with North ShoreLIJ Southside Hospital to hold the very first annual Medical Career Day at the high school on April 30th.

The event featured over a dozen different interactive exhibits going on in the high school’s auxiliary gym, including an operating room, a pharmacy, and nursing, nutrition, radiology, respiratory and hazardous materials units. A variety of other informational tables in the school lobbies included material on diabetes counseling, neuroscience, pediatrics and human resources, among other fields of interest to potential medical students.

Workshop lectures were held in the auditorium during every period of the school day, educating the students about different health issues.

Continuing the strong relationship with North Shore-LIJ that has been built over the past year since the Medical Academy was formed, more than 55 professional employees of Southside Hospital were in attendance at the event, including Executive Director Donna Moravick and members of the hospital’s community services department such as Vincent Cunningham, Kerri Fontaine, Edward Frasier and Jack Rosenberg.

Amanda Schilling of East Islip has proudly completed her landscape project at the American Legion Hall in Smithtown to earn her Gold Award as a Girl Scout. Her year long project consisted of puling out the overgrown shrubbery, roto-tilling the property and meeting with Mr. Schwartz to design a new landscape with flower bulbs, perennials and new bushes for the property.

The new landscape, which includes tulips, daffodils, knockout roses, many arborvitaes, a hydrangea tree and other perennials provides maximum color with little or no maintenance required.

Amanda used weed mats and mulch, supplied by Smithtown Town, to lessen the maintenance.

Amanda is currently a junior at East Islip High School. She is a member of the STARS club, the SADD

The instruction given in the Boating Course is the best way to learn the basics of safe boating, for new, as well as experienced boaters. This is a perfect time to take the course, right at the beginning of another boating season. This course is taught by New York State Certified volunteer instructors of the United States Power Squadrons. “The Squadron” is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have already taught over three million students how to make their boating safer and more enjoyable. FASHION TAKES OVER - The East Islip High School PTSA and SADD Club held their annual Fashion Show on March 20th, featuring over 80 students and teachers on the runway. The theme of this year’s event was Bring The Pride Back. The show proceeds were used to benefit a neighborhood child stricken with cancer, according to organizer Bridget Lopiccolo, as well as for the annual SADD scholarships to be awarded in June.

ROYAL RANGER HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron was recently joined by Legislator Tom Cilmi at a ceremony honoring William Stetson, a recipient of the Gold Medal from the Royal Rangers. The Islip chapter of the Royal Rangers is dedicated to educating and empowering Islip’s youth in a way that promotes community involvement.

TRACK STANDOFF - The East Islip Boys Varsity Track team raced into Hauppauge on April 23rd to take on League IV rivals the Eagles, and came away with a 76-65 victory and an improved 3-1 season record. Gold Award Project The Bachinettes, a string quartet formed by violist Jessica Willdigg as her Girl Scout Gold award project.

Violinists Marissa Caico, Janine Alto and Cellist Nicole Caico were invited to work with Jessica and practice various classical and seasonal pieces after school with the purpose of entertaining senior citizens at local nursing homes.

They have also performed at Girl Scout unit service gatherings, the East Islip Historical Society Orphan Christmas Tree Lighting event at Brookwood Hall and the American Association of University Women’s Installation of Officers Dinner at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bayshore.

The Bachinettes, all members of the East Islip High School Symphony Orchestra, developed confidence to share with audiences their love and passion for music due to the encouragement and outstanding instruction provided by the teachers within the East Islip music program.
