Other fixes included a fresh coat of pant and stain, updated seating, and updated ceiling tiles.

These small changes have made for a cleaner, safer room for the shelter’s animals to play in and a more welcoming room for our residents to conduct meet-and-greets with the animals.

“These artists have dedicated themselves to making this shelter a more beautiful place. They volunteered their time, efforts, and supplies to help make our facility more inviting to the public.

Long Island artist Julianna Kirk visited East Islip High School’s fashion class on April 10th for a three-hour workshop on fused glass pendants, presented through the BOCES Arts-in-Education program.

Kirk, a former high school teacher, is currently a member of the faculty at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills, as well as the Long Island Craft Guild, the Women Sharing Art organization and the Phoenix Gallery in Bellport.

Pond Day

For the seventh year in a row, students in Islip High School’s Keep Islip Clean club have participated in Pond Day, an annual event where the high schoolers participate in a cleanup within the Islip community in recognition of Earth Day. This year, the students celebrated a little early, beautifying the high school campus on Friday, April 19th.

Throughout the day, the

students cleaned Pardees Pond and its shoreline, created a garden near the school’s marquee sign, enhanced the existing gardens near the 9/11 memorial, built a swale drainage area on the runoff gutter near the parking lot, and painted birdhouses and plant watering spikes.

“It’s nice to educate people on the environment and what it means to keep it clean,” said KIC

President Amanda Findley.

“I love this club, and it changed how I view the environment.”

Added adviser Wayne Mennecke on why they brought this project to the high school, “KIC began as a Town of Islip initiative; we are Islip and we represent Islip, so it made sense to bring what the Town practices to our students.”

You’ve walked into a movie theatre or arena of some sort – one with “No Outside Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right?

It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips?

Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed.

Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile

of snacks, clearly. After all, we were in this for the long haul.

For the most part, we timed our mini-meals for the short breaks we were allotted between films. But when those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me.

Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought.

Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer.

No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the

avalanche of liquid out.

Great. Now I had a saturated pocketbook, soaked belongings – and no soda. I gathered everything in my arms and walked down the hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight.

About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in.

All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it.

My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone.

Go figure.

Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients.

In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a

healthy, thriving ecosystem.

Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others.

In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey.

In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million

year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians.

When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life.

Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.

East Islip Middle School’s studentmusicians excelled at this year’s Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association SCMEA Division II West AllCounty Festival.

The event, held at Elwood Middle School, showcased the most talented band, chorus and orchestra students in the seventh and eighth grades from schools all over western Suffolk County.

After three days of extensive rehearsals with their guest conductors, the three groups – band, chorus and orchestra – were ready to perform at the March 10th concert.

The orchestra, led

by Kristin Benson and featuring East Islip’s James Daley (viola), Nicole Humpf (cello), Skylar Pipitone (cello), Samantha Smith (violin) and Devin Thelemann (bass), performed Odyssey, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, 1st Movement, Moondance and To Tame The Raging Rapids.

Conductor Jacob Fowle led the chorus – including East Islip singers Matt Alessi, Brittney Berke, Sarah Bloom, Kendra Canavan, Amanda Carey, Paul DeMasi, Katie Ginty, Steven Murello and Matt Waldron – through All for Me Grog, Shoshone Love Song, Cantate, Bridge Over Troubled Water and Seed To Sow. Connetquot Elementary School’s second-grade classes traveled through Africa via song during their two days of performances of The Elephant’s Child musical. East Islip High School’s Environment Green Career Academy students and teachers hosted their 5th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 5th, showcasing the school’s new 3,500-watt photovoltaic solar system.

The multifaceted fivehour event included an all-day variety talent festival in the courtyard, complete with traditional mascot frogs and popular performances by studentmusicians like Alexandra Konnerth, Jacob Levesque and Brandi Smigiel (the latter two comprising the duo On the Corner of Who & What), recycling games for visiting middle school classes, and a special “Stump the Solar Guy” game with Solar Dad and Sons President Ken Sanger. Tom Barry held woodcarving demonstrations in the front lobby while Home Performance Technology demonstrated thermal

imaging. Over 30 different environmental exhibitors held court in the auxiliary gym, promoting new technology and ways students can help save the environment, including the Department of Environmental Protection, It’s My Bag, Keep Islip Clean, Seatuck, Sierra Club and the Town of Islip Office of Recycling.

With Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Islip Town Councilman Anthony S. Senft Jr. in attendance, the very first East Islip Earth Day tree was planted in honor of the Environment Green Career Academy’s fifth anniversary.

The East Islip School District annual budget vote and board election on May 21st will be held this year at one polling place, the Early Childhood Center at 1 Craig B. Gariepy Ave. in Islip Terrace, in the first-floor cafeteria and gymnasium.

Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Parking will be available in the front of the building and in the rear parking lot between the ECC and the middle school.

In prior years, the voting had been broken down into four separate voting districts, one at each of Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools.

While this worked in the past, it would now present difficulties due to the district’s new security procedures. In February 2013, new audio/video surveillance systems were installed at the main entrance doors of each of the elementary schools. All visitors are now required to display identification prior to entering the buildings, and only after a visitor has been identified and cleared are the doors unlocked and the visitor permitted to enter and sign in at the front desk.

Voting at the elementary schools would be very difficult.

Community members would be required to follow the identification procedure, possibly leading to long lines. This would be necessary since the safety of the district’s students, faculty and staff must remain paramount.

Voting at one central location, the Early Childhood Center, where no students are currently present, would avoid the security issue entirely and streamline the voting process.

The change in voting location also produces a cost savings in these fiscally challenging times.

In June, the editors of Photographer’s Forum will publish Davis’ photograph in the book The Best of College & High School Photography 2013. This is quite an honor, as over

16,000 photographs were entered from the United States, Canada and around the world. The photo, of a turtle, also appears on the contest’s online gallery.
