The Salvation Army Nassau County Advisory Board is pleased to announce the 32nd Annual Benefit Band Concert, featuring The Salvation Army New York Staff Band and Chorus, is set for Wed., May 8, 2013 at 7:30pm at the Cathedral of the Incarnate in Garden City.

Serving continuously for more than a century, the New York Staff Band (NYSB) is regarded as one of the foremost brass bands in country, possibly worldwide. The concert lasts about two hours with intermission.

Proceeds from sponsorships and journal ads will be used benefit the Youth Enrichment Programs of The Salvation Army, which provides services for youths who feel the pressures of negative outside forces. Services include at-risk teen

and gang intervention, residential substance abuse treatment, homeless family shelters, and pregnant and parenting teen programs.

These programs provide alternatives and hope to youths and their families to avoid social dysfunction and crime.

For older youths, The Salvation Army also provides employment opportunities for low income college and high school students, vocational training, college prep, personal finance training, linguistics education and anger management. Many of the youths who take part in Salvation Army programs are at-risk and do not have access to opportunities outside their immediate environments.

The Salvation Army gives all youth a chance to experience educational enrichment, life skills

development, and spiritual and physical wellness.

Such experiences allow at-risk children and adolescents to envision and pursue better futures for themselves and their families. Help the Salvation Army help these children and their families, all while enjoying the beautiful music of the New York Staff Band at the Catherdal of the Incarnate in Garden City.

They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive.

Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued.

After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting...

And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue.

Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead.

“Yeah. So what’s the problem?

You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point.

“Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then.

“Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?”

A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver.

“Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried.

“Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep.

But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

According to a recent study issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, widely-held views that there is a suicide spike during the winter holidays is untrue. Instead, suicide and suicide attempts actually spike during the spring/ summer months.

“We know that this finding is counter-intuitive to commonly-held beliefs,” states Theresa Buhse, Associate Executive Director, Long Island Crisis Center.

“However, by correcting this myth, we can be more proactive in being suicide aware and preventive if we know the reality.”

The Walk/Run For Friends of Karen at The Long Island Marathon, is an opportunity to help children diagnosed with cancer and other lifethreatening illnesses.

The 5K Walk/Run on will be held on Saturday, May 4th, and the 10K, Half & Full Marathon will take place on Sunday, May 5th, at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.

Friends of Karen provides emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with life threatening illnesses and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The organization has helped more than 12,400 children in the New York tri-state region.

The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen was started in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Evelyn Anderson, a Friends of Karen parent who wanted to run a half marathon to honor her son, Luke, diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and now enjoying growing up with his loving family. Last year, more than 300 walkers and runners joined the team and more than $340,000 has been raised for the organization.

Town of Oyster Bay seniors are invited to take part in computer classes to be held at the William P. Bennett Hicksville Community Center, located at 28 West Carl Street in Hicksville, announced Town Councilwoman Rebecca M. Alesia. The classes are held by the Education and Assistance Corp (EAC) Inc. for seniors 60 years of age and older through its SeniorNet program.

Classes will begin on Tuesday, May 7th.

“The Town is pleased to extend our partnership with EAC to offer both of these classes to seniors, in an effort to better provide computer education to our older residents,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “The classes are wide ranging, and no prior experience with computers is necessary. Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2012-2013 School Tax Levy is due on April 1st, but can be paid without penalty through May 10th. Please be certain to sign your check, payable to James J. Stefanich, Receiver of Taxes.

Indicate your property’s S.D. Code, Section, Block, Lot and Phone number on the check.

“By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be made without penalty,” Mr. Stefanich explained.

“After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to April 1st.”

Residents can pay in person, by either cash or check, at the Tax Office, Oyster Bay Town Hall West, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, or by check

only at our office in Town Hall South (rear entrance), 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa.

In addition, the Hicksville Annex, at the TOB Parking Facility, 55 Duffy Avenue, Hicksville, will be open to accept payments by check only, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on May 3rd, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10.

Residents who prefer to mail in their payments, should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539.

When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments.

Payments being made by mail should include the second half stub.

Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject payment.

Residents now have access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card. These services are available through a link on our Town website, w w w. o y s t e r b a y t o w n . com. Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they chose to pay taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).

“When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.”

The Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center will be operating a new summer hockey school program developed and run by The Rinx Hockey School at the Town’s state-of-the art Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Town Councilman Joseph G. Pinto.

“Hockey players in the Town of Oyster Bay will be afforded a unique opportunity to develop and learn in week long sessions geared specifically for their talent level,” Councilman Pinto said. “Best of all,

they will experience all of the fun that comes from excelling at this great sport!”

Councilman Pinto said the Town is fortunate to have The Rinx overseeing this special program. “For 20 years, they have provided quality hockey camps and clinics,” Councilman Pinto said. “They know how to bring out the potential in every young player.” The program, which is slated to begin June 24th and run through August 16th, will include a full day of on ice and off-ice training run by trained hockey

professionals. Throughout the week, participants will receive the benefit of 15 to 20 hours of on-ice training and 6 to 8 hours of off-ice training. The program will be broken down into two levels, intermediate and advanced. The intermediate skills program is for ages 5 through 12 and will include 15 hours of on ice training per week and over 8 hours of training per week off the rink. The advanced session is geared for travel players ages 6 through 14 and includes 20 hours of on ice training and 6 hours of training per week

off the ice. Both sessions emphasize shooting, passing, agility drills and field sports. Lunch every day is included.

“These training sessions will be challenging and rewarding,” Councilman Pinto said. “They will also be packed with tips and insight to help players develop the fullest.”

“What a great way to spend the summer having fun while concentrating on overall skill development,” Councilman Pinto said.

“Town of Oyster Bay residents receive a 10% discount on any of the

training weeks.” Early arrival and late pick up will also be available.
