One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts…

We always think it’s not going to happen here.

Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally.

Some people lucked out.

Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be.

They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to.

As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both.

But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos.

Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist.

Let’s all hang in there.

Together, we can – and will – get through this.

And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano.

“Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Coschignano said.

“Registration for Series 2 (November 3rd through December 21st, 2013) will begin October 20th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.

TheRinx.com) or by phone 516.797.4126.”

“Learn to Skate” offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey.

Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic

skills through advanced levels. The program is 7 weeks in length (although there will be no classes on November 28th and 29th) and all classes are 30 minutes in length.

For residents, the fee is $135 for the session.

For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week 7

Learn To Skate with a recommendation for next series. There will be no refunds or makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

“The Rinx Skating School philosophy is simple; their staff of experienced and qualified professionals, governed by US Figure Skating, USA Hockey and Professional Skaters Association, teach the fundamentals of ice skating with a major emphasis on fun,” Councilman Coschignano said. “We are proud to offer quality programs for every skater, whether young or young at heart, beginner or champion.”

Earning Recognition St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School is pleased to announce the names of five students who have been awarded the designation of Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Commended students have earned scores that placed them in the top five percent of all test takers.

The Commended Students for 2014 are: Sean Connolly of East Islip Christian Da Luz of East Northport Samantha R. McDonough

of Massapequa Sara Michels of Levittown Kevin Wasko of Massapequa The National Merit Scholarship Program is a nationwide competition for recognition and awards conducted by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Over 1.5 million students took the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October. Of all test takers only 34,000 have been awarded the designation of Commended Student.

In addition to these

five students, Brandon Khoury of Bay Shore was named a 2013-2014 Scholar by the National Hispanic Recognition Program for Excellence in Academic Achievement.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program is administered by the College Board and selected 5,300 Hispanic/Latino students from a pool of over 259,000 based on a combination Preliminary SAT scores a grade point average.

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding

potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation”.

BATMAN 1½ year-old male Cocker Spaniel; loves to cuddle Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto, Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. and Nassau County Legislator Michael Venditto visited Darkness Rising, a haunted house right in the heart of Massapequa.

For the past four years, Kevin Baird and Jim Kennedy have worked together to present the spooky Halloween attraction with amazing special effects that give visitors the same thrills and chills as would be experienced at a premium amusement park.

The haunted house is located on Brooklyn Avenue at a 12,000-squarefoot building that was made available by

the Massapequa Fire Department. Thousands of people visit the attraction yearly and all of the net proceeds go to YES Community Counseling Center and The Heather Pendergast Fund.

YES Community Counseling has a dedicated staff of social workers, mental health counselors, substance abuse counselors and medical professionals that provide a wide variety of services to the residents of Nassau County. The Heather Pendergast Fund assists the children of volunteer firefighters and EMS workers on Long Island who have been stricken with a life threatening illness.

On behalf of the entire

Town Board, Councilman Pinto and Town Clerk Altadonna presented citations to both Kevin and Jim, and thanked them for their efforts.

Fall & Halloween Festival Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 5th Annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival. On Saturday, October 26th, the Town will host the second fall family festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Park, at the corner of

Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. As in years past, this fun-filled event takes place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first festival was held earlier this month at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park, in Jericho.

“I invite residents to come out and celebrate

the arrival of the fall season at this annual free event, which features fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, as well as bouncies, games, apple cider and popcorn,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to explore

and have the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, which they will then be given the opportunity to decorate.

In addition, children are welcome and encouraged to come in costumes.”

The Supervisor noted that this event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival

is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

Residents can stay active this fall by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program. According to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, registration is underway for the twice-weekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls.

“Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Johnson explained.

“Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active. The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.”
