caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and a session on “Legal Planning and Eldercare Concerns for the Caregiver and Person with Dementia” presented by Frank Buquicchio, Esq, Member, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee. This year’s keynote speaker was Bobbie Braun, a local artist, designer and philanthropist. During her speech, Ms. Braun talked about what it was like to care for parents who were living with Alzheimer’s Disease. She shared with those in attendance the ups and downs, the humor
and the complexity of finding the right care for her parents. Thrown into her care giving role on a moment’s notice, Ms. Braun worked diligently to develop what is an evolving long-term care plan while advocating on behalf of her parents to ensure quality care and maintaining the flexibility needed to address a moving disease process. Everyone wants, and deserves, to enjoy life, feel productive and be secure. Since 1987, when President Ronald Regan officially proclaimed March is National Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, everyone has taken extra steps during this month to raise awareness about the needs and rights of people with disabilities and to celebrate their accomplishments and contributions to our communities and society as a whole. The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. March is recognized by groups across the country as an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments and
challenges facing people with developmental disabilities and their families. UCP Suffolk encourages all to celebrate “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month” by sharing these important facts: • Developmental disability is a natural part of the human experience and affects approximately 4.6 million Americans. • All people with developmental disabilities can be productive, contributing members of their communities! • During times of economic decline, essential services and supports for people with developmental disabilities are often threatened. • Policy makers can only make good public policy when they hear from the people directly affected by their decisions! “People with
developmental disabilities and their families have come far in improving their lives and enjoying the same access as every other American to housing, education, employment, and more but there is still work to be done,” said Stephen Friedman, UCP of Suffolk - President, CEO. “Communities can get more involved and become more responsive by embracing people with disabilities and encouraging system and policy changes to better meet the needs of those we serve.” Now is the time to reflect and participate in Developmental Disabilities Awareness month. For more information about Developmental Disabilities and programs available through UCP Suffolk, please visit our website at www.ucp-suffolk.org or call 631.232.0011.

decades into one of Nassau County’s leading medical institutions. The mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, who expressed thanks for the century of compassionate care made possible at Mercy by the hard work and dedication of not only the hospital’s physicians, nurses and support staff, but also The Friends of Mercy and the Council of Leagues
auxiliary organizations, community residents and the continuing inspiration provided by the members of the founding Congregation. Among those in attendance were six leaders of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) on Long Island in recognition of Mercy’s Century of Compassionate Caring and its witness to Catholic health care.
In recognition of The Fresh Air Fund’s 137th summer of bringing together New York City children and volunteer host families in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has recognized March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of inner-city boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy New York City streets to enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country! Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children for one or two weeks or more in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This
year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the starfilled skies.” Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has

provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million innercity children since 1877. For more information about becoming a Fresh Air volunteer host, please call Joan Giusto at 631.683.4010 or The Fresh Air Fund at 1.800367.0003. Visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www. freshair.org.

Poodle skirts, Thunderbirds, black leather jackets and the Burger Palace helped to transport community audiences back to Rydell High School in 1959. In early March, talented students from W.T. Clarke High School performed in Jim Jacobs and Warren
Casey’s production of Grease. In this two act musical, popular song favorites such as, Greased Lightning, We Go Together and You’re The One That I Want, brought spectators back to days gone by. Directed by Kristen Norwark, the W.T. Clarke
High School production boasted a cast and crew of 65 talented student-actors and design team members. The orchestra, under the direction of conductor Adrianna Donovan, flawlessly performed the tunes of music from a bygone era.

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no
shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit
the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Alec Urbach, a film student at the Long Island High School for the Arts and a senior at Roslyn High School, was named a Distinguished Finalist in the national 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. Alec is one of only eight students in New York State to be
chosen for the award, which honors young people for outstanding acts of volunteerism and impressive community service activities. Alec earned the award for his impressive global education efforts, for which he founded the nonprofit organization Giving From the Ground Up in 2009, to help educate students in Africa. With the help of his teachers, Alec methodically developed his own curriculum to teach basic math, science and hygiene. He approached his lessons through his most beloved medium — film. He began with rudimentary animations, crafting his scripts from American
lesson plans, but his work quickly evolved. Today, Alec’s beloved characters Finnius Fox and Patty the Hummingbird are helping children in developing nations to better understand their lessons. Giving From the Ground Up is now Alec’s Animated Schoolhouse and has a volunteer core 500 strong in several nations including Ghana, Botswana and Togo. His videos reach nearly a quarter of a million students, with plans to expand to South America. “You are an exemplary role model for your peers,” wrote Prudential Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld in a congratulatory letter to
Alec. “Thank you for your inspiring commitment to serving your community. Contributions like yours make our communities and our entire nation stronger. We salute you.” “It’s a real honor for me to be recognized for my efforts at effecting positive change,” said Alec. “Everyone has their own, innate ability to make the world a better place. My path is through improving education. There’s a real barrier to literacy for these children,” he says of the students his Schoolhouse reaches. “I’m working to help them break through it.”

All funds are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest.” Currently, the World Food Programme estimates that 2.6 million children die annually of hunger-related causes. Celebrating 100
INSTALLATION DINNER - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented an official Town of Hempstead Citation in fitting recognition of the Nassau County Fireman’s Association Ladies Auxiliary Installation Dinner. Pictured: President Marry Messina of Levittown, Junior Past President Dorothy Lotten of Bellmore, Conductress Marie Campisi, Treasurer Katherine McCabe, Financial Secretary Beverly Palmese of Bellmore, Recording Secretary Jane Fahey McGee of East Meadow, 1st Year Trustee Ruth Ivarson of Oceanside, 1st Vice-President Pat Callow, 2nd Vice-President Maureen Brooks and Corresponding Secretary Nancy Pugliese. Monday, February 25th was a special day at Bellmore’s Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, as the students and staff celebrated the 100th Day of School. To kick off the day, a schoolwide assembly was held where students showcased their musical skills by singing songs centered on the number
100 and counted their peers by ones, fives and tens. Following the program, the students returned to their classrooms to participate in mathematical counting games, arts and crafts projects, and writing assignments. The firstgraders in David Reilly and Natalie Sicoli’s class focused on predictability
and their various skills. Students were tasked with predicting how many times they could write their name, write the whole alphabet, draw stars and complete jumping jacks in 100 seconds before finishing the activity and getting their actual number.
March For Babies Leading a dedicated team of volunteers, Supervisor Kate Murray kicked off the Hempstead Town 2013 March for Babies program. It is Murray’s 11th year as the honorary chairwoman for the March of Dimes’ March for Babies Walk, scheduled for Sunday, April 28th at Eisenhower Park. In partnership with CSEA Local 880 (Hempstead Town’s Employee Labor Union), this is the town’s 15th year as a participant in the March of Dimes. The March of Dimes supports research and programs that help moms have fullterm pregnancies and babies begin healthy lives. Joining the town’s March for Babies team at the kick-off event was the Vardakis family, formerly of Franklin Square and now living in Maryland. Andrew, a member of the United States Coast Guard, and Allison Vardakis
shared their personal story about the difficult yet inspirational journey to the premature birth of their daughter, Holly. “I thank our dedicated employees, and their family members and friends for helping us protect the health of our babies by supporting the March of Dimes,” Murray said. “We are especially inspired this year because of our mission family, Andrew and Allison Vardakis, who introduced us to their beautiful daughter, Holly, who is a living example of how the efforts of our volunteers really do support the health of babies.” During the town’s March for Babies kick-off event, March of Dimes Community Director Amanda Fennell presented Murray with a plaque signifying the Hempstead Town’s team status as a “Gold Team,” for raising
nearly $14,000 in 2012. “At CSEA Local 880, we are always excited to work with the dedicated team of volunteers from the Town of Hempstead to help promote the health of babies by supporting the March of Dimes,” said CSEA Local 880 President Charlie Sellitto. “We expect to have another successful year as we gear up for the March for Babies walk.” “I am proud of our continuing relationship with CSEA Local 880 and the March of Dimes in the fight against prematurity,” Murray said. “I look forward to leading our team at the 2013 March for Babies Walk on April 28th.” To learn more about Hempstead Town’s 2013 March for Babies effort and the March of Dimes, visit the town team’s webpage at www.marchforbabies. org/team/toh.

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never know to fail) Oh most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. (3x) Holy Spirit, You who solve all problems, light all roads to that I can attain my goal. You, that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. Youth Conservation Dates Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative, a twoday, hands-on programs on hunting safety will be offered in April by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education unit, the agency announced today. The Hunter Safety Course will be offered on April 20th and 21st at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville.
Both events are being sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education unit, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-ofstate sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. It
includes the streamlining of hunting and fishing licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said
DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “These youth education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State. DEC applauds our local sportsmen and women, the Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club for their tireless work towards the protection of our environment and natural resources. The
2013 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce children to hunting ethics and to teach them how to be responsible hunters.” Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75word application. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate or Bow Hunter Education
Training Certificate. These certificates are required in order to purchase a hunting license. Enrollment in the class is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken either their Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education course. For more information or to register for one or both of these sessions, contact the NYS DEC Sportsman Education Office at 631.444.0255.
