owling Green Elementary School students were treated to a special presentation given by Kathleen Bart, author of A Tale of Two Teddies: Celebrating the History of the Teddy Bear. Ms. Bart spoke about the history of the teddy bear, while sharing the many interesting facts about how the teddy bear became a worldwide icon. In addition, the students were introduced to Ms. Bart’s own “American-style” teddy bear that accompanies her on all school trips.

Living Up To The Challenge

Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953!

So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Rain mixed with snow that signaled the early stages of a nor’easter failed to dissuade 200 guests from attending The Friends of Mercy Medical Center’s 47th Annual Gentlemen’s St. Patrick’s Dinner. Returning to a familiar venue at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club, the March 7th black-tie event honored State Senator Dean G. Skelos, Republican Conference Leader, Temporary President and co-Leader of the State Senate’s historic majority governing coalition. Dr. Alan Guerci, Mercy’s president and CEO, was presented with a check for $170,000 representing the proceeds of The Friends’ 2012 fund-raising efforts which were pledged to support the hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only facility on the south shore of Nassau County designated by New York State as being staffed and equipped to provide specialized complex care to all premature and sick newborns. The event was chaired by Andrew E. Healey of Rockville Centre, a long-

Show Of Love During an assembly for students at Barnum Woods Elementary School, the “Golden Rule” rang true. Motivational speaker Joe Trionfero’s Show of Love presentation not only reiterated the many principles that are taught through the school’s character education program, but also highlighted the fact that everyone can empathize

with others if he or she listens and pays attention to body language. “You can hear what someone else feels,” Mr. Trionfero told the students. “Relationships with others are about understanding what another person is feeling.” Although Show of Love’s main objective was to emphasize the principles of respect and kindness, it

also touched on listening to others with “your ears, eyes and heart.” Mr. Trionfero instructed the students to place themselves in another person’s shoes before making a judgment. He pointed out that you can “stop the hurt” by taking control of cruel actions and criticism.

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. recently congratulated John F. Kennedy High School Senior Joshua Pollock on being chosen as a national semi-finalist in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search. “Joshua’s tireless efforts and many hours of hard work and research have advanced him into an elite group of young men and women. This is an extraordinary

accomplishment and Joshua should be very proud to have earned a place among the nation’s top young scientists,” said Senator Fuschillo. Participants from all across the country, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands compete in the talent search, considered the nation’s mostprestigious pre-college science competition. Joshua is one of only 300 semifinalists chosen from entries

nationwide. Senator Fuschillo presented Joshua with a copy of a legislative resolution which was recently passed by the Senate in honor of his accomplishment. With the passage of this resolution, sponsored by Senator Fuschillo, Joshua’s name and achievement will forever be part of the New INTEL SEMIFINALIST - Senator Fuschillo (third right) is pictured as hcongratulates York State Senate’s official Joshua Pollock (center) on being named a national semi-finalist in the 2013 Intel Science Talent Search. Students at Barnum Woods Elementary School learned about the heart and the body’s blood flow through a unique lesson that was part of a threeweek study about heart health and nutrition. Under the direction of physical education teacher Donald Whearty, students rotated through an obstacle course resembling

the cardiovascular system. They performed tasks at stations that represented each part of the heart. The students entered a parachute, symbolizing the body’s lungs. They then “traveled” to the pulmonary vein, left ventricle, right atrium and finally, the pulmonary artery, all while performing a series of cardiovascular exercises.

Each station throughout the course was labeled with a note to remind the students of the station’s, or system’s function. Mr. Whearty explained, “By simulating the heart through the obstacle course, the students were able to gain a clear understanding about how blood travels through our body.”

Treating Others Right

Critically acclaimed drum band Hip Pickles delivered an awe-inspiring performance to students at Barnum Woods Elementary School in an effort to promote the six pillars of character along with the district’s antibullying initiatives.

Through this interactive presentation titled Music With A Message, studentvolunteers were invited to play along with the Hip Pickles band. By working together to create beautiful rhythmic beats, the students portrayed the qualities of teamwork and

cooperation. Hip Pickles also emphasized the importance of treating others fairly. “To be happy, you have to think about others,” drummer Chet stated. “You should always use the right words to make people feel good.”
