“These groups have been working hard to train, plan, organize and fundraise for this year’s alternative spring break,” said Bryan Gill, moderator of the Habitat for Humanity Club and assistant dean of students and student life on the Long Island Campus. “With such a large group of volunteers, we will be able to split into smaller groups and reach more communities and help even more people. We will also spend time reflecting on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.” Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Now, nearly five months later, SJC students, alumni, faculty and staff are eager to assist those still suffering and decided to cancel trips they had planned to volunteer in other locations around the country. Sponsored by SJC’s Campus Ministry, the Habitat for Humanity, STRIPES (Students Taking a Role in Positively Empowering Society) and STARS (Students Taking an Active Role in Society) clubs, faculty members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, selected a group of 26 students that were willing to spend their spring breaks rebuilding structures, moving sand, painting and helping in any way possible after Superstorm Sandy tore through the east coast, leaving particularly severe damage in New York and New Jersey.

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are opting for an alternative spring break close to home this year, and will spend the week of April 1st through 5th aiding in recovery efforts for local communities that were destroyed earlier this year by Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with organizations such as the Gray Beards, Tunnel to Towers and Sandy Relief Long Beach, students will stay close to home to work in Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Breezy Point and Staten Island, some of the hardest hit areas in New York and New Jersey. This past October, Superstorm Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 hurricane season, flooded homes, streets, tunnels and subway lines, destroyed property and left thousands without power. The storm affected countless individuals,

The ENY Upper 90 Cup is a new competition this spring. 167 excellent teams in each ENYYSA league who are not Premier League teams are playing in this competition. The finals of both the State Open Cup and ENY Upper 90 Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd at Stringham Park in LaGrange. The third competition is the Arch Capital Group Cup with 261 teams competing. For Under-12 and above, it is for travel teams who are still working to rise to the level of the best teams in each ENYYSA league. It is open to all Under-10 and Under-11 teams regardless of skill level. my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real
purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that the State Cup will kick off this spring on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. 711 teams from the East End of Long Island to north of Albany have entered the State Cup and are vying to become state champions. “We are looking forward to wonderful competition, hopefully to be played in abundant sunshine this spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer. As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams. Only State Open Cup champs go on to play in the Regionals with those winners going to the Nationals in the National Championship Series.

North Shore-LIJ Huntington Hospital recently recognized March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with its first ever Go Blue Day on Friday, March 15th. As part of the day-long spirited event, hospital staff wore blue in support of colorectal cancer awareness and provided patients with valuable information regarding early detection screenings and various treatment options that are available today. The school serves a unique population of special education students whose needs cannot be met in their home schools for a variety of reasons. She works closely with these students to challenge them academically, build their self-esteem, improve their social skills and make them career ready. Tarzia collaborated with her colleagues to create the career-planning course, which students use as a “reference guide” throughout the year. She facilitates a unique jobreadiness program at Hofstra University, where students participate in work-study and internship programs, exploring transitional goals and receiving practical, realworld job training.

RAISING FUNDS FOR ST. BALDRICK’S - Mepham High School recently held its St. Baldrick’s event on March 20th. St. Baldrick’s is a event where volunteers shave their heads in order to raise funds for the cure of childhood cancer. As of the latest tally, $36,528 was raised from the event.
Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need. Math Madness Fervor and excitement were in the air at Lee Road Elementary School in the Levittown School District as students throughout the school prepared for the first annual Math Madness competition. Under the direction of math teacher Kelly DiPretoro, students rivaled for a winning spot in the finalist round of the competition by providing
the answers to addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems with speed and accuracy. The winners were crowned and photographed for the Math Wall of Fame. Ms. DiPretoro explained that the competition took place in recognition of National Pi Day and to aid in the students’ learning of math facts. “The more you practice your math facts,
the easier it will be for you to solve more advanced math problems in middle school and high school,” she told the students. During the 17th Annual Recognition Night for Community Service, a banquet hosted by the Levittown Public School District at the Gerald R. Claps Career and Technical Center, community volunteers were honored for their tireless efforts and hours of service. In his opening remarks, Levittown Superintendent of Schools Dr. James J. Grossane thanked those in attendance for their support of the school district’s educational programs. The Art Of Mosaic
During the winter semester, Levittown students at Northside and East Broadway elementary schools took a field trip to MacArthur High School for an up-close and handson investigation of insects and arachnids. MacArthur High School research teacher David Friedman and student volunteers enrolled in the Advanced Placement Environment course, the science
activity, the students were taught the entire process of creating a mosaic, from first sketching an idea to the actual application of tiles. Prior to beginning their creation, students received a history lesson about the art of mosaic and were able to view photographs of ancient artwork. “One piece of artwork tells us what people wore and what role they played in history,” Ms. Tollen told the students. Each student worked with Ms. Tollen in placing
the pieces of tile, glass and stone and then filling in the grout lines. To reinforce the art of mosaic, the students were instructed to create individual paper mosaics. “This has been an incredible experience for the entire school,” Principal Jamie Mack stated. “We really appreciate the new skills learned through this exciting artist-inresidence workshop.” Photo provided by: Elizabeth Sobel, Syntax

Guest Readers Welcomed In March, community members, administrators and Board of Education trustees volunteered to share their favorite children’s books with students at Parkway Elementary School, as part of a month-long Parents As Reading Partners celebration. The daylong activity encouraged students
Parkway Elementary School students recently had an opportunity to work with Northport artist Esther Tollen in creating a mosaic that will eventually decorate a wall in the school’s building. Funded through the Cultural Arts Committee, Ms. Tollen worked with each class in creating all components of the mural. In addition to the school’s name, the picture depicts a garden scene with billowing clouds and sunny skies During the weeklong
research program and the Environmental Club all worked together to make the experience possible. During their visit, the students examined the different characteristics of these organisms and had a chance to handle Madagascar hissing roaches and betsy beetles. They also got up close and personal with a rose hair tarantula and a scorpion. The students had a great

The music department of Levittown’s Division Avenue High School proudly presents Peter Pan, one of the world’s most celebrated musicals, with professional flying effects by ZFX Flying Inc. Students throughout the district, who are enrolled in the middle and high schools’ American Sign Language (ASL) courses, attended a unique assembly with performances given by the Little Theatre of the Deaf, which is the children’s ensemble troupe of the National Theatre of the Deaf. This troupe’s mission is to simultaneously educate
and entertain through their performances. The actors use sign language in an effort to broaden the audience’s awareness, understanding and appreciation of deaf culture. Using simple props, the actors combined the spoken word with sign language during a performance of a show called “The W 5.” During this act, students

Legislator Dave Denenberg was proud to honor Merrick resident Claudia Borecky as one of this year’s “Trailblazers” at the Women’s History Month 2013 Celebration at the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola on Monday, March 18. Borecky was recognized for her strong civic involvement and advocacy for improving the Merrick community. Each year, as part of Women’s History Month, county legislators honor outstanding women in their legislative districts who have “blazed trails” through the wonderful work they do in their communities. Ms. Borecky is serving her fifth year as President of the North and Central Merrick Civic Association. HEALTH CENTER SUPPORT - Enterprise Foundation generously presented Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD) with a $1,000 donation. These funds will be used for the brand new state-of-the art Charles Evans Health Services Center located on ACLD’s Lindner Campus in Bethpage, which is in the process of being completed. This facility will provide a comprehensive scope of health services for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Sorting A Pot Of Gold
In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, first-grade students in Sallie Phelan’s class at Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in the Levittown School District dug their hands into Lucky Charms cereal in order to complete a mathematical graphing activity. The students were instructed to sort through a cup of the cereal and divide it into groups of gold shooting stars, horseshoes,
green clover hats and other lucky marshmallow charms, and then tally the number of charm pieces and grain cereal on a worksheet. Prior to the activity, Ms. Phelan discussed possible categories the students could use to sort the cereal. The students also shared questions that they wondered about, including whether the Lucky Charms boxes are equal in terms of
the number of charms per box and whether there is the same amount of cereal in each box. After completing their math activity, the class shared the box of cereal and even looked for a pot of gold. RAISING FUNDS - NUMC staff save lives in many ways. The staff of the Emergency Department took the time amidst the commotion of their work days to share Dr. Rosarion’s passion for education and service to benefit women and children in Haiti. A $530 gift was raised on behalf of Eye Of A Dream. This sum will pay in full a year tuition for one of the children in secondary school in Gonaives, Haiti. Dr. Rosarion thanks the emergency department nurses, especially Irene Sheehan, RN, who spearheaded the fundraising.
EMERGENCY PREP - Two John Jay College students visited the Nassau University Medical Center to meet with support services staff and tour the hospital. The met in the Emergency Operations Center for most of the day, discussing topics of interest to them: fire response, fire alarm systems, training, security protocols, security safeguards, safety, hazardous materials, generators, incident command operations, drills, events, decontamination, lock down, response and planning for Hurricane Sandy and all issues related to the surge of patients.
