Our veterans courageously served in the United States Armed Forces to defend this country, and now the Town of Hempstead is seeking to return the favor for our men and women in uniform. Supervisor Kate Murray is proud to announce that the town’s Veterans Services Counselor, Rick Gales, will be visiting local senior centers in the coming weeks to educate veterans on important information, services and benefits available to them. Mr. Gales also helps residents to complete and file applications for veterans benefits. His services can benefit surviving spouses and children of veterans as well. “The Town of Hempstead is proud to provide the services of our Veterans Service Counselor at local senior centers,” stated Murray. “Rick Gales is a Vietnam war veteran,

National Service Officer with the Military Order of the Purple Heart, a Past Commander of the Nassau County Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the town’s Veterans Advisory Committee. We are confident that Mr. Gales will be of great assistance to his fellow veterans.” Rick Gales will be at the following senior centers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Thursday, April 11th – Green Acres Senior Center (400 Flower Road, Valley Stream) Tuesday, April 16th – Levittown Senior Center (555 North Newbridge Road, Levittown) Thursday, April 18th Baldwin Senior Center (1810 North Grand Avenue, Baldwin) Tuesday, April 23rd – Merrick Senior Center (2550 Clubhouse Road, Merrick) Thursday, April 25th – Uniondale-Hempstead Senior Center (840

Uniondale Avenue, Uniondale) Tuesday, April 30th – East Meadow Senior Center (1485 Front Street, East Meadow) Friday, May 3rd – Rosa Parks Senior Center (2 Babylon Turnpike, Roosevelt) Tuesday, May 7th – Wantagh Senior Center (1150 Seamans Neck Road, Wantagh) Thursday, May 9th – Cedarhurst Senior Center (Village Hall, 200 Cedarhurst Avenue, Cedarhurst) For residents who cannot attend on one of the above dates, Rick Gales is also stationed at the town’s Veterans Information Booth from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday at Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead). No appointment is necessary, but residents are urged to call 516.812.3506 in advance.

“I encourage all veterans to stop by a senior center near them and meet with the Town of Hempstead’s Veterans Service Counselor,” concluded Murray. “Here at Town Hall, this is one way we’re saying ‘Thank You’ to those who have served our great country.”

Childlike Mornings By: Gene McParland, North Babylon Sometimes morning comes softly, like a small child tip-toeing quietly into your bed. These are the best of awakenings. Mornings seems more comfortable, like that small child snuggling by your side. Your morning coffee is just right When looking at a smiling face and loving eyes across the table from you, even if this picture is only in the mind’s eye. On such a morning evening seems a million miles away, winging its way gently on the wings of a dove returning to nest for night.

PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray applauded students who participated in the Terrific Kids Program at Summit Lane Elementary School in Levittown. Also pictured: Principal Keith Squillacioti and Terrific Kids honorees – Anna Caccciuttolo, Brianna Garfield, Aidan Connors, Jemma Mileski, Vincent Giordano and Ariana Torres.

Seventy-three Wisdom Lane Middle School students were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and 54 into the World Languages Honor Society in a joint ceremony held in the school’s auditorium. Principal John Avena welcomed the parents and explained that their students were being invited into the National Junior Honor Society for having displayed outstanding accomplishments in the

areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. Those being inducted into the World Languages Honor Society have not only demonstrated the promotion of cross-cultural acceptance, tolerance and understanding, but have also achieved excellence in the study of Spanish, French and Italian. “You have shown that you can not only work hard, but that you are respectful and can accomplish

anything in your path,” stated Mr. Avena in his opening address. The celebratory mood of the evening was punctuated by several musical performances by the chamber orchestra under the direction of David Pra. After repeating the induction pledge, each new member of the society was called to the stage to receive a certificate commemorating his or her accomplishments.

edP dental Plan

For more than 10 years, EDP Dental Plan of Ronkonkoma has provided Long Islanders with an affordable dental care plan. EDP developed a cost savings program that is available to anyone. EDP’s lowcost plan saves its members money on all dental procedures, from cleanings and exams to implants and braces. The discounts are given to the patient up front at the time of treatment to make it simple for the member to use. Jill from EDP Dental Plan says, “We have been able to address our members’ biggest concerns with the dentist - the cost. Many of our members have avoided the dentist because they are concerned with how much it will cost, and therefore don’t get the dental care they desperately need. EDP is bridging the gap between provider and patient by providing this cost-effective program
