recreational activities and services. Unfortunately, due to the serious damage caused by Superstorm Sandy, the doors were closed at the popular Merrick Senior Center, located at 2550 Clubhouse Road. While seniors were temporarily relocated to the Merrick Golf Course Clubhouse during repairs to their senior center, the golf clubhouse just wasn’t home. Today, Murray, Cullin and Hudes unveiled the new and improved Merrick Senior Center during a joyous celebration that included musical entertainment and a luncheon. “Many of Merrick’s seniors not only lost their homes because of Hurricane Sandy, but they lost their second home that is the Merrick Senior Center,” Murray said. “I am excited to say to our Sandy-battered senior citizens, ‘Welcome Home.”
Construction on the facility, which was just completed, including new insulation, a new boiler, rewiring of electric, a new refrigerator and freezer, a retiled kitchen, a new handicapped bathroom, a new stove, new ceiling tiles, electrically cleaned ducts, two new transformers, new molding and a new kitchen floor. The Merrick Senior Center is open five days a week and provides an array of helpful and recreational services to over 170 seniors, including fitness classes, educational presentations, entertainment, crafting classes and trips. It has also hosted several popular programs throughout the year, including the town’s flu immunization day, as well as the Bereavement and Caregivers Support Groups. Nutritional services and transportation is also provided. More than 50 seniors attend the Merrick Senior Center on

Seventy-three Wisdom Lane Middle School students in the Levittown School District were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society and 54 into the World Languages Honor Society in a joint ceremony held in the school’s auditorium. Principal John Avena welcomed the parents and explained that their students were being invited into the National Junior Honor Society for having displayed outstanding
accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership, citizenship and service. Those being inducted into the World Languages Honor Society have not only demonstrated the promotion of cross-cultural acceptance, tolerance and understanding, but have also achieved excellence in the study of Spanish, French and Italian. “You have shown that you can not only work hard, but that you are respectful
and can accomplish anything in your path,” stated Mr. Avena in his opening address. The celebratory mood of the evening was enhanced by several musical performances by the chamber orchestra under the direction of David Pra. After repeating the induction pledge, each new member of the society was called to the stage to receive a certificate commemorating his or her accomplishments.

W.T. Clarke Middle School welcomed 23 new members to its chapter of the Junior Tri-M Music Honor Society during an induction ceremony at Verdi’s in Westbury. “Tri-M membership is a true honor,” said W.T. Clarke Middle School Principal Stacy Breslin in her address to the inductees. “I am proud of your dedication to your music and amazed by your talent. With continued effort, I am certain you will exceed all of our expectations.”
The new honorees join the roster of the 27 continuing members who also took part in the ceremony. ACHIEVEMENT AWARD - Hempstead Town Gary Hudes presented an official Town of Hempstead Certificate of Recognition to Salk Middle School Student Emily Castaldo, the proud recipient of the Councilman Hudes Achievement Award for Emily’s “I Set My Goal and Succeeded” project during a special ceremony held at the school. Councilman Hudes commended Emily on her reaching her goal concerning scholastic improvement and her spirited determination to achieve and sustain higher grades.

Fun With Poetry exposed to various parts of speech and reviewed their knowledge of nouns, verbs and adjectives. They then used this information to create various types of poems, including acrostics and raps. After the poems were completed, the
students illustrated them. Through poetry, the students have become more aware of rhyme and vowel sound patterns, information that will help improve their overall reading skills.

Perfect Record In Wrestling
I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when
you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads. As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life. After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy. At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback! Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way
back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water. Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list. Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline. Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer. All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very

Continuing the district’s tradition of academic excellence, 68 students enrolled at W.T. Clarke Middle School were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society during a candlelighting ceremony held at Verdi’s of Westbury. This prestigious society serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service, and character. The honorees, considered to be among the finest students nationwide, are commended for their outstanding achievements both inside and outside of the classroom. Principal Stacy Breslin praised the parents in attendance as she acknowledged that they were their children’s first inspirational influence in life. She reiterated that parents are “the first teachers”. To the students she stated, “Your academic record speaks for itself, but what makes us most proud is your mindset, determination and work ethic.” After the officers lit each candle and explained the requisites for induction into the society, the inductees were called up individually to the dais to receive their certificates. Guest speaker and English teacher Patricia Hartman also congratulated the students on their impressive achievements. “Always remember this moment and the accomplishments you have made to achieve this great honor,” she stated. “You are all individual stars shining high and brilliantly in the night sky.” After the induction, the students celebrated with their families over a wonderful meal.

Levittown’s Division Avenue High School Varsity Baseball team is off to another great start. The team has already won three league games in the past week to jump out to a 3-0 record. During last Monday’s game, senior Justin Wiertz went two for four with a run scored to pace the offense in an 8-3 win over Seaford. Senior pitcher Anthony Semonella also pitched five innings, allowing six hits while striking out five.
In addition, junior Mark Martinez went two for four with an RBI. In the second game of the week, the team’s success continued with a 4-1 win over Lynbrook. Martinez threw a complete game, allowing only two hits out of a total of 68 pitches. Sophomore Anthony Papa also sparked the offense by going three for four with two RBIs. The third game resulted in a 12-3 win against Manhasset. Wiertz
continued his hot hitting by going three for four with a run scored. Senior Nick Boldi and junior Chris Reilly both went two for four as the team pounded out 15 hits. Sophomore Anthony Papa also received his first varsity win by throwing six innings and allowing five hits with three earned runs. The defense has been led by senior catcher Boldi, who has been outstanding behind the plate for the Dragons.

Don’t Text And Drive
The Levittown MacArthur High School lacrosse program and Business Honor Society hosted the first annual Don’t Text and Drive Lacrosse Day at the high school. Six lacrosse teams, including Bellmore JFK High School varsity,
MacArthur High School varsity and junior varsity, North Shore High School varsity and junior varsity and Mineola High School varsity, paired off in three separate friendly games. The team members also took a pledge to not text while driving and donated to the campaign.
The purpose of the event was to raise awareness for young drivers about the direct impact they have on their safety and the safety of others as they drive an automobile. Over $200 was raised and will be donated to the Remember Alex Brown Foundation.
Bear Parade
In front of an adoring crowd of family members, classmates and school faculty, hundreds of musicians from the East Meadow School District gave an exquisite performance at Long Island University’s Tilles Center for the Performing Arts in Brookville on March 20th. The district high school chorus and chamber orchestra, under the direction of guest conductor Dr. James
Kindergarten students enrolled at Northside Elementary School have been studying bears. The students learned interesting facts about these cuddly-looking creatures by reading Bears, Bears, Bears by Laura Winter and then created their own booklets titled “All About Bears.” In their booklets, they

Students Have Talent
FRIENDLY COMPETITION - The East Broadway Elementary School Chess Club, under the direction of advisers Lisa Dugan and Nancy Masino, has been meeting each Friday afternoon for the past 10 weeks. Students learned chess fundamentals with the help of parent volunteer Roy Pikser and alumni volunteers. The learning process quickly moved to a friendly competition between club members.
Each year, students in grades 3-5 at East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown School District showcase their varied talents during the school’s annual Talent
Show. This event has become a cherished tradition at the school, and this year the student performances included singing and dancing, joke telling and

Temperatures were cool but spirits were warm as residents participated in the 27th Annual Levittown Education Against Destructive Decisions Walk and Community Fair. Each year, this muchanticipated event precedes a week of school assemblies and activities in the Levittown School District that highlight ways for students to live healthy lives and learn to make decisions that will have positive outcomes. Each of the district’s schools marched one mile through the neighborhood behind artistically designed banners. Student marshals Katherine Darr from Division Avenue High School and Mia Katz from MacArthur High School accompanied Grand Marshals Alice Andersen (retired social worker) and Jackie Levine (MacArthur High School drug and alcohol counselor), as well as district administrators, Board of Education
trustees and the Salk Middle School band, to the cheers of neighbors. Community representatives, including Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, Hempstead Town Councilman Gary Hudes and Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, also joined in the fun. After the parade, participants met in the Levittown Memorial Gymnasium to hear speeches and introductions prior to the community fair. Superintendent of Schools Dr. James J. Grossane welcomed the community to the event and thanked residents for their support
of the school district. “It is great that this event is always well-attended, and to see that parents and the community are so willing to support students in making good decisions for themselves,” he stated. In addition to games, informational booths were set up on the perimeter of the gymnasium by local support groups and community organizations to provide participants with valuable information. Nancy’s Dance Factory also entertained participants with a variety of dance numbers.
