Dressed in purple, those in attendance celebrated the life of Korri and remembered her for her loving spirit and favorite saying, “Smiles are free.” During the brief ceremony, members of Korri’s Girl Scout troop, Troop 964, planted a tree in her honor.

The Paths We Choose By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that.

Ironic, isn’t it?

But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction?

The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility.

It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits.

But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference?

Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own.

For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected.

Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants.

As any prospective college student knows, SAT scores and your Grade Point Average are not the only factors that play a role in the admissions process.

It is said that colleges like a well-rounded student.

The term “well-rounded” is often thrown about without thought, which raises the question: what exactly is an extracurricular?

Most colleges would define the term “extracurricular” as something done or happening outside the normal curriculum of a school or college. This means anything from Archery to volunteering at a Zoo. Extracurricular activities don’t have to be

a chore; finding those that suit your interest are a good way to make friends, explore careers and ultimately help attain your goals.

So what do you love to do? Really, anything counts as an extracurricular!

Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant.

Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items.

It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of

sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now.

It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position.

Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school.

A Golden Success

More than 400 attendees from the Long Island medical and corporate community came out to the Cradle of Aviation in Garden City on Friday, April 12th, to attend the American Heart Association’s 50th Annual Long Island Heart Ball. The Long Island Heart Ball is an annual social event held to recognize outstanding accomplishments of individuals and companies in the area of cardiovascular science and leadership.

This year’s event chair, Peter L. Fromm, MPH, RN, FACHE, Administrator, South Nassau Communities Hospital along with his vice chair, Christopher Doveala, Vice President, Financial Services, Leviton Mfg. Co. graciously greeted the crowd while this year’s honoree Paul E. I would like to take few minutes to say “THANK YOU” to the wonderful people who work at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers.

I celebrated my 60th Birthday on Friday, April 26th. I walked into the office on that beautiful Friday morning to “60” decorations hanging over my desk, a “60” crown and a “60” necklace, balloons, various gifts, flowers, cards, plants, lottery scratch-offs, donuts and a beautiful birthday cake.

The staff of this newspaper is like a “2nd family” to me and I am so very grateful to be an employee of this great paper, which by the way, will also be “60” years old this coming November.

Scholarship Applications Available For the tenth consecutive year, the Long Island Game Farm is inviting graduating high school seniors to apply for the Stanley and Susan Novak Memorial Scholarship.

The time is now to apply for the annual scholarship, which is worth $1,000.

Each year, this award is granted to a graduating senior from Long Island who plans to attend a twoyear or higher college or university program, and exemplifies the qualities required to become a pioneer in nature, whether it be in the field of veterinary medicine or environmental science.

The application deadline is Friday, May 31st, 2013.

Now in its 44th year, the Long Island Game Farm was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak and is located in Manorville.

It features hundreds of animals on 25

acres of land. Year after year, the park is visited by thousands and enjoyed by all. It has been an educational site for school children to learn about animals and nature for decades.

The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s co-founder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak.

In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66 and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack, leaving his legacy behind.

In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who started working at the Game Farm when she was five years old, died from Multiple Myeloma at age 37. Both were passionate about animals and were steadfast in maintaining Long Island’s environment.

“I can think of no better way to help preserve the memories of Stanley and Susan. They helped our family pursue its dream of building a park where children can see and interact with animals found in nature. Through this scholarship, we help college students pursue their dreams,” said Diane Novak, Co-Founder and Owner of the Long Island Game Farm.

Volunteer Appreciation

In recognition of National Volunteer Week, St. Catherine of Siena Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Center in collaboration with St. Catherine of Siena Hospital Medical Center held an appreciation event to honor their volunteers.

This event was attended by over 80 individuals who were thanked by the staff and administration for their time and dedication.

The Director of Volunteers, Heather Reynolds, expressed

her gratitude to the volunteers, “Thank you for all your hard work, time and talent, all of us here at St. Catherine of Siena truly appreciate your efforts and support.”

Students of the hospital’s Healthcare Career Exploration and Internship Program crafted beautiful banners which displayed the theme “Coming together in unity to help the community.”

Once Upon A Mattress

Lively fictional characters and bright costumes set the stage for the W.T. Clarke Middle School Drama Club’s presentation of Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer’s Once Upon A Mattress.

Under the direction of Douglas Castillo, the 55-member cast and crew performed the adaptation of

Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea” in true comedic fashion.

Laughs and applause from family and community residents who attended the performances flooded the auditorium.

In this fairy tale classic, Queen Aggravain has ruled that no one within the kingdom will be allowed to marry until her son,

Prince Dauntless, has found a marriage partner.

The queen is unprepared, however, for her decree has managed to sabotage every available princess that comes along. Lively lyrics

by Marshall Barer and talented enthusiasm from the middle school cast made these performances memorable.

The McVey Elementary School Student Council received a visit from Leukemia and Lymphoma Society representative Isai Fuentes. The mission of the society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. Mr.

Fuentes discussed the many ways that the society helps to improve the quality of patient life.

After Mr. Fuentes’ presentation, student council members presented him with a generous donation totaling

$400 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s “Pennies for Patients” fund. As a reward for their kindness, the students were granted a school-wide “Pajama Day” celebration.

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care has received one of Sustainable Long Island’s “Getting It Done” awards this year for providing free medical care to New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

Since the program’s inception last November, Project Coastal Care has treated more than 1,200 people in a mobile medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst.

The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August.

The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver.

Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured.

“We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together. We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.”

Shore-LIJ’s director of sustainability and social responsibility, said the award recognizes North Shore-LIJ’s commitment to the community. “We’re not just about providing care to the patients who walk through our doors but also helping those who cannot get to the care they require,” she said.

This is the third year that Sustainable Long Island is bestowing the “Getting It Done” awards to local organizations.

This year, groups are being honored for their work helping people impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

North Shore-LIJ received its award last week during Sustainable Long Island’s seventh annual sustainability conference held at Carlyle on the Green in Bethpage State Park.

Nassau BOCES has been awarded a $50,350 grant as a part of $3.4 million in statewide grants New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently pledged to support early childhood to youth-aged programs in communities in need.

The Parent-Child Home Program falls under grant guidelines which are intended to provide funding for children and youth in targeted high-risk neighborhoods.

“The grant will fund an expansion of the nationally replicated and evidencebased, Parent-Child Home Program, which Nassau BOCES has successfully administered in various districts since the 1970’s. It will afford the organization the ability to expand to include up to 50 more families, including five displaced by Superstorm

Sandy. The program gives low-income and low-literacy families the resources and skills they need to support their young children’s learning and prepare them for successful school entry.

“We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as a part of this grant,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES.” The Parent-Child Home Program stresses the importance of parentchild interaction and aims to bridge the preparation gap for young children approaching school age. The program encourages parents and gives them the skills to interact with their children through verbal interaction, play and interactive experiences which nurture critical early emotional development and problem solving skills.

Pinwheels For Peace Volunteers are needed to assist Stony Brook University staff on May 4th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., when 6,000 pinwheels will be installed in a field at South P Lot on the Stony Brook University Campus.

The pinwheels represent the lives lost annually to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The pinwheels will serve as a powerful backdrop at Stony Brook University’s annual “Ride for Life” Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony, which will take place on May 11th, starting at 2 p.m.

The annual Ride for Life, started in 1998 by Christopher Pendergast, a 20-year ALS patient, advocate, and founder of the Ride for Life Organization, raises awareness and

funds for ALS, a fatal neurodegenerative disease. The 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients across Long Island begins May 6 and ends May 18. A cornerstone of the Ride is the Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony at Stony Brook. The Ride also helps support Stony Brook Medicine’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association certified center on Long Island.

Area students, members of the community, and others interested in supporting the Ride for Life are welcome to help install the pinwheels. The idea of the pinwheels, conceived

by Christopher Pendergast, is to remind everyone of the importance of research to seek better treatments

for ALS and that a cure is “blowin’ in the wind.”

For students seeking community service recognition that may be required from organizations or schools, a form is available to recognize their efforts. All volunteers are requested to bring a screwdriver if they have one.

Refreshments are available to volunteers, including bagels during the morning hours and pizza and beverages for lunch. In the case of rain, the pinwheel installing would then take place on May 5th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Levittown’s MacArthur High School student Laura DelPiano is the second-place winner in the NYCM Insurance “Dangers of Distracted Driving” Video Contest. During a presentation in the school auditorium, Robert Snyder, NYCM’s assistant vice president of marketing, presented Laura with a certificate and MacArthur High School with a prizewinning check for $10,000.

Laura is enrolled in the business department’s Digital Media 2 class and collaborated with studentvideographers Samantha Johnson, Alyssa Lerro,

elementary school student Peter Soguero, Sam Soguero and Ryan Walsh to create a short film about texting and driving.

“It doesn’t matter if there is a new driver on the road or an experienced driver,” Laura stated during the award presentation in the school auditorium. “All drivers need to pay more attention behind the wheel of a car.”

According to a study by the Pew Research Center, 48 percent of all teens between the ages of 12 and 17 say they have ridden in a car while the driver was texting. In addition

The Hempstead Town Mobile Building Department is on the road again, setting up its one-stop shop at 12 convenient locations over the course of three weeks. Under the direction of Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray and the Town Board, this mobile office provides victims of Hurricane Sandy with important Building Department services, including the distribution and processing of permit applications, as well as the opportunity to meet with an on-site Plans Examiner.

Many Sandy victims have utilized the helpful services provided by the Mobile Building Department, which has visited several communities in the wake of the Superstorm.

“The aftermath of Sandy has truly been difficult for many of our residents,” Murray said. “We want to do everything we can to assist neighbors as they work hard to rebuild after the Superstorm and return to normalcy.”

At each scheduled visit, the Mobile Building Department will be available for Sandy-affected residents from 12 noon to 6 p.m.:

That includes the deadline within which homeowners can secure building permits for Sandy-related repairs

without incurring permit fees.

Now through June 1st, Building Department fees are waived for Sandy-related structural repairs that conform to original dimensions and specifications, commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs/replacement.

Additionally, all permit fees have been waived for temporary housing trailers and storage pods during construction.

What’s more, the town has also eliminated a requirement for homeowners to obtain a variance prior to increasing their home’s foundation height to comply with FEMA flood standards. Waived Building Department fees will save residents up to $2,500 for a permit.

Building permits are required for all structural repairs and alterations within the Town of Hempstead. The Building Department’s Plan Examiners are available Monday through Friday, with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, call the Building Department Sandy Helpline at 516.801.5642.
