An evening of eclectic chamber music, a performance of international song and culture from Sri Lanka, and a classical Americana program are just some of the highlights from the upcoming slate of Distinguished Artists Concerts set for April 2013, it was announced by Town Councilman Joe Pinto. “The Town’s ‘Distinguished Artists’ concert series, sponsored each year by the Cultural and Performing Arts Division (CAPA) of the Department of Community and Youth Services, represent an opportunity for residents to enjoy diverse, free musical performances, held throughout the year, at local libraries,” Councilman Pinto said. “The performances scheduled for April 2013 serve to illustrate how truly global the musical interests of the residents in our Town are. Some truly noteworthy performers have been lined up throughout this month, and I encourage residents to take full advantage of this free program.”

stocked with lifesaving blood, a successful blood drive takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with outreach and scheduling appointments. “My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes,” Councilman Muscarella said. The Councilman noted that anyone who missed the Town’s blood drive and would like to donate can call the New York Blood Center at 1.800.933.2566, or visit www.nybloodcenter.org. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder why there is always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every two to three seconds, someone in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their
lives, the importance of donating blood comes into focus. There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death.” The Councilman added that the Town’s summer blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, August 1st. Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 100 pints of blood at its March 7th drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that each pint of blood, when broken down into component parts, could potentially help save three lives, 300 people will benefit from the donations made on March 7th. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives.” The Councilman went on to say that while blood donors are heroes in his book for keeping our area’s hospital shelves

Past President Honored
Mildred M. Johnston, a native of Pittsburgh and private school graduate, married a young teacher William J. Johnston in 1955. They moved to Nassau County in 1962. Mildred rapidly became an active Farmingdale resident; she served as PTA President and Council officer, and headed the original amblyopia screening program in the Farmingdale Schools. As soon as the F a r m i n g d a l e /
Bethpage Historical Society established its organization, Mildred became an active member. She served as President in 1988-1992, a term defined by the campaign to restore the Bethpage Friends’ Meetinghouse, the area’s oldest house of worship. Mildred once again was called on to head of community’s historical society. The later term, which ended this past October, once marked as s successful drive to erect
a Civil War Memorial honoring thirty-five local men. “I am very grateful for all that Mildred has contributed to our community. She serves as an example to women of all ages here in Nassau. The Farmingdale Community is richer in its heritage thanks to the many contributions of Mildred Johnston,” said Legislator Belesi.

Autism Seminar Set Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first
responders and firefighters but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a firefighter and the father of child with autism. The second, similar to the first seminar, is geared toward law enforcement, security, school support and hospital support personnel. Both will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m.
Dorval, a certified public fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build relationships with the ASD
community. “As a parent of a child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand
its scope to include anyone who might interact with individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder will learn in this seminar will be helpful to the patient, as well the provider by instilling confidence that he or she will be able to handle any situation that arises,” said Tom Lateulere, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division. The seminars are open to anyone who wishes
to learn more about communicating with an individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. All others should register by emailing info@ fpf4autism.org. Checkin opens at 9 a.m. for the morning session and a light breakfast will be served; check-in for the afternoon session will begin at noon and refreshments will be served.
