Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr., is urging all Nassau County veterans of World War II to join Honor Flight Long Island for the opportunity to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. at no cost. HFLI helps to honor the brave men & women who served their country and are now in the twilight of their lives. HFLI is part of a national Honor Flight organization, that flies veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial (and other sights in Washington) - absolutely for FREE! There are approximately 40,000 World War II
Veterans on Long Island and in the five boroughs of New York City. To date, HFLI has flown approximately 900 of those great men and women to see their Washington D.C. Memorial. In addition to a free flight, HFLI provides each veteran with a guardian escort for the day, bus transportation in D.C and breakfast, lunch and dinner. “Our urgent mission is to see that EVERY World War II Veteran in our area who wishes to visit the Memorial will get his wish. We’re not ready to rest! Help us find every eligible member of this
Greatest Generation before it’s too late,” said Chris Cosich, HFLI President. “Guardians pay their own way for the privilege to escort a veteran to their memorial and it’s truly a life changing event... for both the veteran and volunteer!” “It is my pleasure to help the men and women who have given so much for the freedom of our country,” said Legislator Dunne, a U.S. Marine wounded in Viet Nam. “Every vet should sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” Please visit http:// honorflightlongisland.org

VENDORS WANTED! or call 631.702.2423 for more information on the next flight scheduled for June 1st, 2013, as well as applications for veterans and guardians. I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when
you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

“In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a Coonhound named Valentine that they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Kentucky dogs and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. We can continue to make a difference for dogs at home, plus dogs from faraway.” The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more than 8,000 local animalwelfare partners across the country, the foundation donates approximately $15
million a year to make a difference in the lives of millions of animals. The organization is funded through donations raised during fundraisers conducted in Petco’s more than 1,200 stores across the country, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions. Money raised helps fund animalwelfare organizations, spay and neuter efforts, animal-assisted therapy programs and humane education. The majority of the funds raised remain in the communities where they were raised, and the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal-welfare efforts. In 2012, the Petco Foundation surpassed $100 million in funds raised for companion animals since the organization was created. To learn more, visit www. petcofoundation.org.

striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets. Last Hope placed 300 dogs and 646 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2012. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Kentucky dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized. Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent.

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with the Daviess County Animal Control of Owensboro, Kentucky to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Wax Portrayals
Fourth-grade students at Fork Lane School in Hicksville transformed their gym into a living wax museum, populated with the likenesses of both historical and current figures for their classmates and parents to learn from. Students from Cristina Abbatiello’s and Lori Coley’s classes hand-picked their roster of luminaries
before diving into the biographical research and preparation of costumes, posters, timelines and speeches to convincingly portray these people. As parents entered the museum, they were met with a vista of students posed as wax statues that came to life to explain who they are and why they are famous.
The lineup of famous people included world leaders, explorers, scientists, athletes, writers and entertainers. The wax museum exercise combined a variety of educational disciplines for the students, including reading comprehension, math, research skills, writing, creative art and public speaking.
Learn To Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to Learn To Skate this spring by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone. “Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Macagnone said. “Registration for Series 5 (May 5th through June 27th) will begin April 22nd. Skates are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from snowplow and basic skills
through free skate levels. The program is 8 weeks in length (although there will be no classes on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27th) and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from Noon to 1 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. Helping Districts Prepare
Several Nassau County school districts are acquiring professional development from Nassau BOCES and Pearson to learn how to implement and utilize the new Common Core State Standards within their districts. School district superintendents, assistant superintendents, teachers and curriculum directors from Floral Park UFSD, Island Park UFSD, Massapequa UFSD, Roosevelt UFSD, and Eastern Suffolk BOCES as well as Nassau BOCES attended the threeday training workshop – where they received valuable training that impacts instruction
and contributes to their professional development. PowerSchool, developed by Pearson, is a web-based student management system (SMS) used by school administrators, teachers, parents and students. Now its tracking system will be used to coordinate data reporting for the Common Core State Standards which have been adopted by 45 states. New York State has not only adopted these standards but has added 15 percent more to their rigorous curriculum. “Being a regional training center for the county affords us the opportunity to offer this training to schools,” says Nassau BOCES
Curriculum, Instruction and Technology Senior Manager Marion Fine, “and it also prepares administrators to manage the large amounts of data associated with the new standards. Additionally, these workshops help our PowerSchool users to interface with their constituents.” Users will learn how to create standard-based report cards, implement customization in PowerSchool, develop and prepare a “map” to navigate the Common Core and more. Emphasis will also be placed on preparing report cards, form letter and web pages for parents to view.
Homeowners Cleanup The first of eight 2013 Homeowners Cleanup programs for Oyster Bay Town residents will take place on Saturday, April 20th, according to Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano. “Homeowners within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District may take unwanted, non-hazardous refuse to the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road, Old Bethpage, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,” Councilman Coschignano said. “This program is an especially popular one within the Town, and with ‘spring cleaning’ fresh on the minds of all as the weather
warms up, this program might just be the catalyst needed to tackle that cumbersome garage or basement cleanup.” The Councilman noted that proof of district residency must be shown. Additionally, if you plan to bring any boats or trailers, proof of ownership must be provided and signed over to the Town. The boats must be drained of all oil, gas and other fluids, and all batteries must be removed. Bushes, tree limbs, fence posts and similar items will be accepted as is and need not be broken into smaller pieces. Used tires, large metal items in excess of four feet, clean fill, clean broken concrete, and boats

precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.” Supervisor Venditto went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interested individuals and groups can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 677-5853. Volunteers are also welcome to sign up the day of the event. The central meeting place will be Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park launching ramps, Larrabee Avenue, Oyster Bay. Each year, tons of paper, food, plastics and other litter are left on beaches or dumped overboard from recreational and commercial vessels. “Many people think this debris simply
disintegrates, but that can take weeks, months or even years,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “Some of the debris has a shelf life that many people would find astounding.” “If you swim, boat or fish in Oyster Bay Harbor, or just want to help protect and enhance the beauty and environmental integrity of this beautiful waterway, I invite you to join us on April 27th,” Supervisor Venditto said. “If you can’t stay for the entire day, even a couple of hours will make a difference. I can assure that you will leave with the satisfaction of knowing that you helped improve the environment and ensure that our beaches and harbor will be preserved for your enjoyment and the enjoyment of generations to come.”
Spring Has Sprung On Fire Island By: Tyler Cianciulli The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads. As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life. After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy. At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback! Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way

On Saturday, April 27th the Town of Oyster Bay, the North Oyster Bay Baymen’s Association (NOBBA) and Friends of the Bay will, once again, join forces to sponsor the annual Oyster Bay Harbor Cleanup Day, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. “Now in its 20th year, Town employees and volunteers have gathered together, rolled up their sleeves and pitched in to complete a thorough cleanup of beaches and shoreline areas along Oyster Bay harbor,” Supervisor Venditto stated. “While some people walk along the shoreline collecting debris, others work from boats, picking up trash and even discarded boats. This annual event is an inspiring one, helping to remind residents that we all can do our part to help preserve the

back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water. Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list. Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline. Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer. All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very
crucial part in the health of Fire Island, as the beaches elongate and erosion is reversed. This cyclic trend will lead to more room for beachgoers in the 2013 season. Nature isn’t the only thing on the mend after Hurricane Sandy; establishments, such as Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach, are getting ready to open up their doors. There is no doubt that Fire Island will be in “fighting shape” and ready for the masses as we kick off the season with a very solid spring. (NAPSI)-Here’s eyeopening news: Recently published research from Oklahoma State University suggests that improving quality of sleep not only reduces stress, but also helps us manage everyday stress.

The Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) was named the recipient of a $10,000 grant from the Foundation Philanthropic Action for Challenging Times (PACT). The program is in partnership with Adelphi University’s School of Social Work, and the grant will help sustain LICADD’s BUDDY Mentoring Program. Adelphi’s PACT is an extra-curricular initiative of the School of Social Work supported by the Riley Family Foundation through which undergraduate social work students engage in philanthropy as a means of social investment for social impact. PACT partners with nonprofits for the purpose of supporting the core mission of social work and to provide opportunities for young social work professionals to engage in philanthropic ventures. “This year, our students were interested in funding agencies that serve the Hempstead, Roosevelt, and Uniondale communities and offer community-based prevention and intervention programs for children,” stated Adelphi University BSW Program Director Sergio Argueta. “We are pleased to support a program that not only meets that criteria, but is active in engaging highrisk youth in our communities in such a positive way.” BUDDY is a mentoring program for children that have an incarcerated parent or close relative, and live in Nassau and Western Suffolk Counties. The children, or “mentees,” are matched with screened and trained adult volunteers who meet one-on-one on a regular basis to provide guidance and support with the goal of

PACT Program Donation establishing a trusting relationship. The mentees and mentors meet for at least a year, but in many cases, the matches are so successful that they continue to meet well beyond the required amount of time. The program currently serves a total of 42 children through direct matches. Beyond the initial matches, the program provides fun and educational opportunities to children through community events and celebrations. In the past month, BUDDY hosted trips to the Autoseum and the Ringling Brothers Circus. In addition, events like the Holiday Celebration and Back-to-School Picnic meet not only the social needs of the kids, but provide much needed school supplies, Christmas gifts and winter clothing. LICADD’s Community Engagement Coordinator Lauren Ventimiglia, LMSW, who facilitates mentor trainings and matches, explained why she loves working with the BUDDY program, “Our mentors meet with these kids a few hours a week, and might seem like such a small thing but it’s much more than that. In most cases, our mentees aren’t receiving that positive support at home. For our kids, it’s an opportunity to break free from the stress of having a parent in jail- they have time to be a kid again.” Children of incarcerated parents often experience a range of emotions related to a parent’s arrest and/ or incarceration, including fear, anger, sadness, abandonment, embarrassment, guilt, resentment, isolation and withdrawal from family and friends. instability, trauma linked to witnessing the parent’s arrest, incarceration and/or criminal activities and uncertainty about the future challenge even the most resilient children. BUDDY seeks to break the cycle and ensure that Long Island’s most at-risk children get the help and encouragement they need to be successful. Without assistance, many of these children are at increased risk for poor academic performance, drug and alcohol abuse, unsafe sexual behaviors, and juvenile justice or criminal justice system involvement. “Thanks to the generosity of Adelphi’s PACT students, we can continue to make sure that these resources are available,” stated LICADD Executive Director Jeffrey Reynolds, Ph.D., CEAP, SAP. “It is particularly inspiring to learn that the support of BUDDY and our mentees came from college students as they are the future leaders of Long Island. I find it encouraging to see our young people so willing to share their time and resources in order to help others in their community.” Interested in Learning More About BUDDY? The BUDDY Program was initially funded by the federal Administration for Children and Families, but now solely relies on donations and fundraisers. All of our mentors volunteer their time to mentor a young person. If you have four hours a month to mentor a young person between the ages of 4-18, please call Lauren Ventimiglia, LMSW at 516.747.2606 for more information and an application.

Asya Ashour, an accounting major with a love of literature, a perfect 4.0 GPA and a history of community service, is the valedictorian of the LIU Post Class of 2013. She will deliver the valedictory address at Commencement exercises on Friday, May 10 on the Great Lawn before an audience of 9,000 students, faculty, administrators, parents and honored guests. A resident of Holtsville, Ashour came to LIU Post as a transfer student with a pre-accounting degree from Suffolk County Community College. Ashour was homeschooled throughout high school and enrolled at SCCC when she was just 16. Upon earning an Associate’s degree from SCCC, she was awarded a full tuition scholarship – the LIU Post/Suffolk Community College Scholarship – to attend LIU Post. The scholarship is part of SCCC’s “Stay On Long Island Initiative,” which is designed to help SCCC’s most talented graduates achieve their educational dreams of continuing their education at quality four-year colleges and universities in our region. During her time at LIU Post, Ashour, now 20, has excelled in her major, accountancy, and has shown such an affinity for her minor, English, that English Professor James Bednarz was surprised to learn her major was another subject. “She is one of the smartest and nicest people who has ever graced our halls,” said Dr. Bednarz. “Her skill as a reader, interpreter, and
long as I live.” The valedictorian is selected by a committee comprised of faculty and administrators. Candidates are nominated by faculty members and judged on their G.P.A., a personal essay, recommendations and an interview with the selection committee. LIU Post, formerly known as the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, is located at 720 Northern Boulevard in Brookville. For more information on Commencement at LIU Post, visit www.liu.edu/ post/commencement.

writer struck me as being as advanced as the best of my English majors.” She even managed to combine the two disciplines in her research; she has written a paper on the topic of finance in Shakespeare. As a participant in the LIU Post Honors Program for academically gifted and motivated students, she wrote a thesis on Islamic accounting and hopes to one day help settle inconsistencies in Islamic accounting standards. Ashour said her studies at the LIU Post School of Professional Accountancy took her from a fundamental knowledge of her field –journal entries, complex calculations and financial statements – to an understanding of the underlying human foundations of the accounting and business world. She said she can now take a piece of information, understand its sources and consequences not just in the accounting records but also in the “real world,” and then be able to analyze the conclusions she has drawn. Ashour has tutored accounting students, volunteered to help lowincome Long Islanders prepare their taxes, and written for The Pioneer, the campus’s awardwinning newspaper. “Extracurricular activities have given me a sense of being part of a community,” said Ashour. “I have been able to be of assistance to those who needed me, whether it was through action or only words – and will continue to provide my knowledge and skills for the help of others as
