Honor Society Inducts 24 Levittown’s Division Avenue High School added 24 new members to its roster in a ceremony marked by words of wisdom, musical interludes and the honoring of teachers. Requisites for this annual induction include academic excellence as well as a student’s display of scholarship, leadership, character and service.

“This event is a clear indication that the high

school is moving in the right direction,” Principal Dr. Francesco Ianni stated as he addressed the students. “Success is never an accident, and you all embody this principle.”

Board President Michael Pappas and Vice President Peter Porrazzo also congratulated the students and presented certificates to the society’s officers and to adviser and Assistant Principal Joan Lorelli.

In addition, the students elected English teacher Kristen Stritzl as Teacher of the Year and awarded PTSA Chairman Lisa Curran with the Community Service Award. “I am lucky to be with students all day who raise my bar on a daily basis,” Ms. Stritzl said.

The event was graced with music performed by the chamber orchestra under the direction of Mark Martufi.

Students Tops W.T. Clarke Middle School is proud to announce that three science research students from Megan Denecke’s and Carol Simowitz’s honors earth science classes took first place in Nassau Community College’s 15th Annual Arts and Science Fair held on April 6th.

Danielle Fuchs, Skylar Hanson and Cindy Pham’s winning project was titled The Effect of Propeller Size On The Energy Production Of Windmills.

These science research students worked for several months to conduct background research and perform experiments

in preparation for the science competition. The entrants displayed their research on project boards and then orally presented their findings to a panel of judges.

The district would like to congratulate Danielle, Skylar and Cindy on this prestigious achievement.

Members of Salk Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society coordinated a fundraiser and book drive to help neighboring Boardman Elementary School in Oceanside, whose library was totally devastated during Superstorm Sandy.

NJHS member Jason Waitkus approached the

Society with a request to help restore the library at the school where his grandmother, Paula Cimiglia, works. Salk Middle School Principal John Zampaglione welcomed the opportunity for the students to demonstrate their R.I.S.E (Respect, Integrity, Sympathy and Empathy)

The students’ efforts resulted in the collection of 456 books and a check for $200, donated to the school to aid in its restoration process. In addition, due to the success of the Salk Middle School book fair, the students were able to donate additional books to Boardman.

What Would You Do...

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What would you do if you won a million dollars? Well, in this day and age, the question is more, what would you do if you won many tens of millions of dollars, hundreds of millions even? After taxes, of course.

And the answer? Well, it varies by person. Some people, when presented with such a seemingly farfetched concept, spout off a list of equally unrealistic purchases that they would immediately make – you know, the private island, jumbo jet, yacht… the whole deal. But then there are others who, should they ever have the good fortune to come into that kind of money, want only to “be comfortable” – to pay off remaining

mortgages and car loans, to make necessary repairs and renovations around the home, maybe buy a new car – nothing too outlandish really.

Because really, once you take into account the taxes, plus your average life expectancy, a few million dollars can be blown through fairly quickly. It sounds like a lot, but is it really?

Depends upon how you budget it. Plan a couple of family vacations, put some away for your children’s college funds, maybe some in the retirement fund… Which brings to light that other question – would you continue to work if you won such a jackpot?

For some, the answer would be an easy and unequivocal “no.” And, if your only purpose of having a job is to make ends meet, that makes perfect sense.

But if you are fortunate enough to have an actual career, one that you have nurtured throughout high school, college and young adulthood, then why should money lessen that passion? If anything, it should allow you the freedom to explore other, perhaps less lucrative, options within that chosen field. Think of it as a new lease on life.

Money can’t buy happiness, we know this much is true. But it sure can eliminate many of the daily stresses which cause unnecessary aggravation in our lives… which, in turn, would most likely result in increased happiness, no?

Of course, the odds of anyone being forced to wrestle with these questions are fairly slim to none. But hey, you just never know.

developing their business plans, the students needed to present their products to a group of investors.

Twenty-two MacArthur High School business students competed against approximately 200 students from various schools throughout the county.

All of Levittown’s participants received high praise from the judges and excellent scores. One group advanced into the final round, which consisted of the six highest point totals from the day, and pitched their product one final time during a five-minute presentation.

MacArthur High School students from Steve Fazzolari’s Business Ownership and Marketing class and Bill Farney’s Marketing Principles and Practices class competed in the 1st Annual Nassau County Comptrollers Entrepreneurial Challenge.

The Levittown students formed groups and assumed various roles, including CEO, vice president of finance, social media director and more.

For the competition, the students were instructed to create a new product to be sold throughout Nassau County. After creating their products and

Intergenerational Friendships Throughout the school year, sixth-graders at Levittown’s Salk Middle School participate in the annual Intergenerational Program in their language arts class with teachers Betty Weiss and Valerie Stanton.

Each month the students correspond with the residents of Highfield

Garden Senior Care Center in Great Neck, informing them of the events and course of study in their classroom. In addition, they create monthly personal greeting cards to help brighten the seniors’ days.

As a special community service art project, the sixth-graders decorated

mugs, which were delivered to the residents along with greeting cards.

Not only did the students feel good about showing empathy towards the seniors, the recipients of those thoughtful gifts were equally happy to receive them.

Run With The Rams The W.T. Clarke High School and Middle School athletic community held its 5th Annual Run With The Rams fundraiser on April 27th, with the proceeds from donations, apparel sales and raffles benefiting a local family in need and the W.T. Clarke athletic program.

The event welcomed participants of all ages and featured a 1-mile “fun run” as well as a lengthier 5K street race. The several hundred runners who had registered for the charitable event came out early to warm up and put on their official timing bibs so that their personal paces

could be tracked. The races circled the neighborhood streets and finished in the rear of the schools’ athletic complex. Training for the 5K race was available for W.T. Clarke students and staff, and Janine Heilbronn and Josh Friedman served as race directors.

Onlookers were captivated by the musically talented students of Woodland Middle School who performed in the beautifully produced eighth-grade spring concert. An assortment of melodies from jazz to Tchaikovsky filled the auditorium as the audience reveled in this fun filled evening.

The jazz ensemble, directed by John Marshall, opened the show with an enchanting trio of songs, starting with Bobby Timmons’ “Moanin’.” The eighth-grade orchestra,

directed by Mindy Lamonica, performed next, ambitiously taking on a portion of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake as their first number.

The eighth-grade chorus, directed by Jonathan Ross, harmonized on three songs with accompanist Meegan Coleman. The chorus was then joined by both the chamber orchestra and wind ensemble for a special performance of Michael and Angela Souders’ “Thank You, Soldiers.” This salute to Unites States military personnel, both past and

Using their knowledge of nutrition and meal planning, while employing mathematical skills, the students worked together to analyze data provided by four fast food establishments at

the mall. They competed against their peers from across Nassau and Suffolk counties and will share a $100 cash prize.

Music study is a highly rewarding component to the fine educational program at Levittown School District.

Elementary school students in grades 2-4 and their parents were recently invited to attend District Music Night at Division Avenue High School as a first step in exploring this popular and award-winning program.

After stellar performances by the high school’s orchestra and band, the students were invited to join the performers in the cafeteria to take an up-close look at the instruments offered. It was also an excellent way for the students and parents to speak to the musicians and the music program staff.

Parents were also encouraged to register their child for an instrument for the 2013-2014 school year.

Elementary school students in grades 3-5 are eligible to participate in the instrumental music program, where they receive one lesson per week and participate in performance ensemble upon proficiency.

The American Sign Language, French, Italian, and Spanish honor society chapters took turns having their newest inductees repeat the prescribed oath in their studied language before crossing the apron of the school stage to receive a certificate, commemorative pin, and applause from the gathering of family, friends and classmates.

HONORING LACROSSE LEGENDS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray hosted Levittown P.A.L Lacrosse Day ceremonies honoring Levittown Lacrosse Founders Norman A. Over 500 students tried their hand at creatively writing a profile about one of the 11 iron workers who had lunch atop the steel

beam during construction of Rockefeller Center in New York City.

The contest was open to public and private school students in grades 9-12.

ART SCHOLAR - Kimberly Kratzer, a student at Levittown’s MacArthur High School, was selected as a 2013 Art Supervisors Association Scholarship Award recipient and LUCK OF THE IRISH - MacArthur High School students Thomas Epp and Lauren attended a ceremony to receive a plaque and scholarship check in recognition of this Burke were winners in the Irish Cultural Honor Society’s Writing Contest and are prestigious honor. Following the ceremony, guests were invited to attend the ninth pictured with teacher Michael O’Shea and writing contest chair John Walsh.
