ith the fall season on the horizon, students at Meadowbrook Elementary School in East Meadow gathered to tidy up their school’s gardens during the annual Fall Beautification Day on September 13th. With shovels in hand, students, accompanied by teachers and PTA members, dug holes in the front gardens and planted a vibrant variety of plants, including asters and mums. The school’s PTA purchased the plants.

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that Division Avenue High School senior Gabriela Pereira has been selected as a 2013 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program was established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. This year, the program recognized only 5,300 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students

nationwide. Qualifications for recognition were based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the 2012 PSAT/ NMSQT and a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, recipients of this honor must be Hispanic or Latino in origin. The NHRP sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities that are particularly interested in academically outstanding seniors of Hispanic/Latino heritage.

Gabriela was also recently named an Advanced Placement Scholar by the College Board, and she continues to challenge herself with a rigorous load of AP courses. In addition, she was a medalist in the New York State Science Olympiad, is an active member of the National Art Honor Society and is the recording secretary for the National Honor Society.

Wear a life jacket. In the autumn, as water temperatures start to fall, boaters who accidentally fall overboard run an increased risk

of hypothermia. While children under 13 must wear a life jacket when the boat is underway by law, it’s a good idea for adults to wear them, too – especially at night.

Purchase life jackets with lights attached so rescuers can find you in the water.

Exit Sandman By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Cliché? Sure. The headline has been used countless times by every media outlet imaginable to commemorate the retirement of a living legend, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. But it’s fitting. So very fitting.

Yankee fan or not, as we have seen over the last few weeks – the entire season, really – there is no one who can deny the pure talent, the class and dignity with which this man played the game for 19 seasons.

In city after city, members of opposing teams eagerly lined up to honor a pitcher the likes of which this game will never see again. Plaques and gifts were presented, generous donations were

made to his charitable organization and crowds rose to their feet in extended standing ovations, marveling at their good fortune at being able to witness a slice of history.

Of course, no one does pomp and circumstance quite like the New York Yankees themselves. I was fortunate to be a member of the sellout crowd who turned out for the team’s official sendoff to the Sandman, on Sunday, September 22nd, 2013. What an amazing display of affection from the team, past players, managers, coaches – and the fans, who seemed to not want the opening ceremony to end.

The last player to ever wear the #42 had his number retired alongside the greats in Monument Park, surrounded

by the family of the original #42, Jackie Robinson.

Metallica entered the field to perform the “Sandman’s” selfappointed theme song live, as Mo ran out to greet the members of the former World Championship teams who lined the diamond.

It was perfect, just like Mariano had been so many times before. What a priceless memory, up there right along with the countless classic moments he had helped orchestrate throughout the years. Nineteen seasons – pretty much the entire duration of my time as a baseball fan. That’s an absence that’s pretty difficult to get over. Baseball, quite simply, will never be the same for me.

On September 24th, eight boys and girls were awarded several honors for attending and excelling at Boys’ State and Girls’ State. I am proud to say that I am one of these eight.

From the moment we walked into Post 1738, we were greeted by men in ties with our national colors. The podium was even emblazoned with an American pattern. The event started with a prayer, pledge and the reservation of a chair in the corner for those who remain missing after all of America’s combat.

We found ourselves in a room full of legionnaires, overachievers and politicians, such as Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk County Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Congressman Peter King, Assemblyman Joseph Saladino, Suffolk County Legislator Thomas Barraga

and many others. It was truly an intense experience.

That night, at Post 1738, we came together to share stories and receive awards. Delivering a speech in front of them was

even more anxiety provoking.

The eight of us found ourselves recollecting a week that served as the highlight of our summer and the spark for our patriotism.

For me, staring at all of my heroes was truly a test of both my resolve and my public speaking abilities! We were in the presence of the people

that make our great nation run. Without the officials who were present, our society would be nothing.

After giving my speech, I returned to the seat beside my mother and trembled at the thought of the journey I had just finished. My road with Boys’ State has come to an end, but my pride in our country has just germinated.

At the end of the night, I received a Congressional Certificate of Merit, a Proclamation and a multitude of other awards; but mostly, a sense of American Patriotism.

I would like to conclude by thanking American Legion Post 1738, the political figures who give me the hope for a greater nation, and the men and women who have given their lives for the United States of America.

The College Board has recognized Levittown School District students from both Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools as Advanced Placement Scholars for exceptional achievement on the May 2013 national exams.

• 104 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a 3 or higher on three or more exams.

• 34 students received the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of those exams.

• 44 students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

• Seven students received the highest designation of National AP Scholar by earning an average grade of 4 or higher on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

These students include Division Avenue High School graduates Emily Doglio, Sara H. Gonzalez, James Reilly, Sukhneet K. Sahota, Ashley M. Stinnett and Ayesha M. Syed and MacArthur High School graduate Liam Lang.

AP courses completed with a score of 3 or higher on the final exam afford students the opportunity to earn college credit.

Angela’s House Golf Outing Angela’s House, a local non-profit that assists families caring for medically fragile children is celebrating the children moving into their new home located in Stony Brook. They will having a golf outing at Willow Creek Golf and Country Club in Mount Sinai on Monday, October 7th. Golfers can enjoy a top notch lunch before checking in at 11:30 a.m. Beverages and light fare can be enjoyed at the halfway house in between

holes before returning for cocktail hour and dinner beginning at 6:30 p.m.

They will have a raffles and a silent auction featuring a wide array of prizes.

This event has a very special meaning to Angela’s House. Several children and their families have been anxiously waiting for the day that Angela’s House III would

open, the day where the long hours of travel to visit their children out of state would be over. For the past three years, the Serva family has been traveling two hours to Blythedale Children’s Hospital in Westchester County where their daughter, Caroline, has been cared for. Karen Serva describes the doors of Angela’s House III opening as “the best day of our lives.”.= Through community effort and events like these, we are

Classes will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from October 16th to November 20th, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the hospital’s Administrative Conference Room. This series gives caregivers the skills and confidence to better manage their own well-being, while assisting loved ones.

Students at Wantagh Elementary School now have the “power of one” – the ability to report and deal with bullying in their community and school.

The students received a visit from actors Ben Robert and Briana Wolf, troupe members of Soren Bennick’s skit titled The Power of One, who portrayed the various types of bullying and encouraged the students to take an active role in stopping this adverse behavior.

“Don’t be a bystander,”

Mr. Robert said. “Learn to be an upstander, a person who takes an active role to stop bullying.”

The “Power of One” set consisted of a series of colored boxes representing the different roles in the bullying process. Following the color scheme of the boxes, the actors donned a green mask to represent the bully, a purple mask to represent the target and a yellow mask to represent the bystander. The skits displayed vivid examples of physical, verbal and cyber

bullying.

Promoting International Peace to bring about peace and read books on the topic, including Lauren Murphy Payne’s “We Can All Get Along: A Child’s Book of Choices” and Katherine Scholes’ “Peace Begins with You.” The students also decorated pinwheels for peace and wrote pledges to bring peace to their

school and the world on dove-shaped paper. The doves and pinwheels were hung in the hallway. Also on display was a large dove cutout on which students signed their names to symbolize their pledge to further the cause of peace in the world.

Levittown’s MacArthur High School has turned 50, and in commemoration of its anniversary, the community has been invited to participate throughout the year in an anniversary brick fundraiser. During the September 11th Board of Education meeting at Levittown Memorial

Education Center, a $3,000 donation from the Class of 1972 helped the engraved walkway move one step closer to completion.

This most recent Guild donation will further enhance the hospital’s commitment to caring for the region’s cancer patients, providing excellence in cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Puppet show times are at 6:15 p.m., 7:00 p.m., 7:45 p.m.
