Groundbreaking Program This year, Nassau BOCES course offerings are

introduced an innovative initiative that helps special education students to earn college credit while preparing them for the world of higher education.

Partnering with Farmingdale State College’s “University in the High School,” Nassau BOCES now provides dualenrollment opportunities for special needs high school students.

The program offers college credit to juniors and seniors at several Nassau BOCES Special Education schools including the Center for Community Adjustment, Career Preparatory High School and Iris Wolfson High School.

The goal of the program is two-fold: first, to increase the success of collegebound special education students and second, to increase college awareness among special needs high school students. Current

Next year, available course offerings will be expanded to include a course on criminal justice, and additional courses are currently being developed.

“Historically, collegelevel courses have been offered primarily to mainstream students on the presumption that only advanced learners would take these classes,” said School Psychologist Dr. Linda M. Lopez, who coordinates the program for Nassau BOCES. “Special needs students face a variety of challenges every day, so looking to the future has not always been their top priority.

This program helps these students to plan ahead and to consider college as a real option.”

Among the diverse group of new physicians graduating from the School: Dr. Obinna Ndum, the son of Nigerian immigrants and the first graduate in the School’s history to receive an MD/ MBA combined degree; Dr.Munzareen Padela, a native Long Islander who spent eight years at Stony Brook to complete a BS to MD program; and Dr. Ryan Vellinga, a Utah native and father of three who worked multiple jobs before choosing medicine as a career.

Collectively, the Class of 2013 will begin their journeys in medicine in one of 21 specialty residency programs, such as Internal Medicine, Neurology and Emergency Medicine. Nearly one-third of the class (42) will train

in primary care disciplines, helping to meet the estimated need for 15,000 new primary care providers over the next five years, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Fifty-five percent matched to residencies in

New York State, and 26 percent will stay on Long Island for their residency training.

Thirteen graduates will stay at Stony Brook for residency training in specialties such as Pediatrics, Orthopaedic Surgery and Anesthesiology.

Taking the Hippocratic Oath for the first time as physicians, Stony Brook University School of Medicine’s Class of 2013 will launch their careers in medicine and begin residency training at institutions such as Columbia, Yale, Cornell, Duke, and Stony Brook Medicine in July. A packed house filled the Staller Center at Stony Brook University during the School’s 39th Convocation Ceremony to congratulate the 130 graduates – the largest graduating class to date.

“Our graduates are entering the most honorable of all professions and one that poses a number of challenges – continuing to remain current with the explosive growth in our understanding of the origins of human health

During the traditional doctoral hooding ceremony, the candidates selected a faculty mentor, family member, friend, or other physician (or someone with an equivalent doctoral degree) to hood them in preparation to receive their MD degree. After receiving their degrees, the graduates took the Hippocratic or Physicians’ Oath for the first time as new doctors.

Commencement Ceremony At Stony Brook University’s 53rd annual commencement recently at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium, more than 5,600 students received their degree and the right to turn their tassels to the left becoming the University’s newest alumni. They joined more than 145,000 of their forerunners around the globe whose lives and work personify the mission of Stony Brook.

“The class of 2013 has a special place in my heart, because many of you entered Stony Brook University with me in 2009,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD during his fourth May commencement address. “In some sense this is my graduating class, and while I will did not fulfill the requirements for a Stony Brook degree, and therefore will be not be walking with you today, I do feel a very real bond with each and every one of you. I hope like me, that you have really enjoyed these four years, and learned a tremendous amount.”

During his commencement remarks, President Stanley highlighted three personal stories of graduating students.

He recognized James “Zak” Szakmary (history), a 67-year old retired air traffic controller and decorated former United States Marine that served and was injured in Vietnam. Zak plans to continue his studies and pursue a Master’s in Public History; Nadia Habib (psychology major/ studio art minor), a student whose story of immigration to the United States from Bangladesh at 20 months old garnered national attention; and Kevin Sackel (mathematics and physics double major/music minor), the quintessential scholar and gentleman, a 4.0 student who was awarded a Churchill Scholarship to study at Cambridge and pursue a one-year Master of Advanced Study in Mathematics.

Receiving honorary doctorates at the ceremony were Terence Netter (Doctor of Fine Arts) the founding director of SBU’s Staller Center for the Arts and a renowned artist and educator in the area of fine arts; and Nora Volkow

(Doctor of Science), Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health and a research psychiatrist and scientist who has pioneered the use of brain imaging to investigate the toxic effects and addictive properties of abusable drugs.

Provost Dennis N. Assanis announced the winner of the Ward Melville Valedictorian Award, the University’s most distinguished undergraduate honor named for the first chairperson of the Council of Stony Brook University. The Ward Melville Valedictorian Award goes to the graduating senior or seniors who have attained the most outstanding academic record during four years at Stony Brook. This year it was issued to three

graduating seniors who received the award with a 4.00 GPA: Christine Boucher of Portland, Maine, a Linguistics and French major; Katherine Chu of Woodside, Queens, Political Science and History major; and, Kevin Sackel of Plainview, New York, a Mathematics and Physics major and Music minor.

Provost Assanis also announced the winners for the H. Lee Dennison Valedictorian Award, named in honor of Suffolk County’s first chief executive and presented to the graduating senior or seniors who entered Stony Brook as a transfer student, completed at least 60

credits of letter-grade work at Stony Brook and attained the most outstanding academic record in that work.

The students that received the award with a 4.00 GPA are: Sergey Moyseyenko from the Republic of Belarus, a Business major with a minor in Studio Art; Ista Ariane Egbeto of Rockville, Maryland, a Biology major specializing in Developmental Genetics with a minor in Business Management; Dimitra Hasiotis of Coram, New York, a Biology major; Amanpreet Mukker of New Hyde Park, New York, a Computer Science major; and, Tiffany Sorensen of Centerport, New York, a Spanish Languages and Literature major.

The student speaker, Journalism major, Philly Bubaris, chosen by a panel of students and faculty based on a submitted essay, shared her thoughts about her four years as a Seawolf. She said, “Stony Brook has taught us how to be forward thinking, positive, prepared and has helped define our passions. It has taught us that what we think we can do is not nearly as much as we can actually do. It also has taught us that with hard work and perseverance, we will eventually reach the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light is today.”

On behalf of the Class of 2013, Tatiana Malebranche, Health Sciences, presented President Stanley with the Senior Class Gift of $5,473, designated to help support Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, which offers the most advanced pediatric specialty care in the region.

To the class of 2013, Dr. Stanley noted, “Don’t forget to stay engaged with Stony Brook University. Remember the good times; be proud of your degree, and when you can, give back to help others realize their dreams. So congratulations, you now join the more than 145,000 Stony Brook alumni whose lives and work personify the mission of the University. Now go forth and prosper!”

TREE DEDICATION - Citations were recently presented to the Paul Family at Wantagh Park on the occasion of the dedication of a Imperial Flowering Pear Tree. The tree was dedicated to their son Raymond J. Paul Commodore of the Wantagh Bay Yacht After two years of Club for the period 2001-2002. Troop 3079 from Wantagh, completed its Silver Award Project at Harvest to the World Soup Kitchen located in Roosevelt, NY. The girls and a group of volunteers renovated a freestanding garage that was in much disrepair, into a walk in food pantry.

The troop, with help of the very dedicated volunteers repaired and sided the back wall, constructed and installed light fixtures and built wooden shelves.

In

addition, the girls put together eight stainless steel rolling shelving units. Much planning went into the project, including estimating and pricing the needed materials, the solicitation of materials to be donated and the actual construction itself.

Thanks to a generous donation, from Webelo Pack 600 Den #1, siding could be purchased for the remaining two walls. This siding was installed by a group of volunteers on May 19th.

kitchen distributes food several times a week. Her hope was to have a sound and functional structure to streamline this process.

Thanks to the tireless efforts and dedication of Girl Scout Troop 3079 Ms. Richards has realized this dream and will be better able to serve the community of Roosevelt, NY. There will be a Ribbon Cutting will be on June 8th, at 10:30 a.m., at Harvest to the World Soup Kitchen, located at 90 Pleasant Avenue in Roosevelt, NY.

A Tree Grows EARTH DAY PLANTING EVENT - Girl Scout Daisy Troops 3568 and 3025 recently participated in the 2013 Earth Day Planting event, which was conducted on the grounds of Gardiners Avenue Elementary School in Levittown. On hand were: Troop 3568 Members – Angelina Garcznski, Ariana Vasiliou, Isabella Matarazzo, Penny Virgil, Alyssa Meslin and Destiny Henera; Troop 3025 – Ava DeRosa, Nicole Clark, Gabriella Cardinale, Reagan Farrell, Grace Huggard, Jenna Giwner, Hailey Metzger, Emily Cavanaigh and Sarah Finger; Gabby Klauber, Emma Matarazzo and Lorenzo Matarazzo.

Following the Chinese Proverb which states, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is today,” Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin and Councilman Gary Hudes will be replacing a Veteran’s Memorial Tree that was planted 20 years ago and felled in Superstorm Sandy as a part of Bellmore Gardens Senior Center Memorial Day Ceremony on Wednesday.

“It is distinctly appropriate that we are here today, just days after Memorial Day, to replace the Bellmore Senior Center’s Veteran’s Memorial Tree,” said Supervisor Murray.

“Unfortunately, this tree

was felled, like so many,

by Superstorm Sandy, but when we heard about it, we knew that we had to replace this significant tree.”

When Hempstead Town learned of the fallen memorial, Supervisor Murray directed the Town’s Engineering Department to secure a replacement tree. The planting and dedication was set to coordinate with the center’s already scheduled Memorial Day Ceremony.

“There was no question in any of our minds that we had to do whatever we could to replace this tree,” said Councilwoman Cullin. Councilman Hudes added, “This tree is a small token of our thanks to the Veterans who have served our country.”

The tree was originally

purchased in 1991 by the Men’s Club of Bellmore and the Bellmore Senior Center and planted with a plaque dedicating it in memory of all Vietnam Veterans who gave their lives. In later years, the scope of the dedication was expanded to include all Veterans. Members of the Center were devastated when the tree came down in Superstorm Sandy.

Hempstead Town will replace the original tree with a beautiful pear tree dedicated to all Veterans.

“Our Veterans have done so much to protect us and our freedoms, replacing this tree dedicated to them is the least we can do,” concluded Supervisor Murray.

Fourth-grade students in Linda Parascondola’s class at Central Boulevard Elementary School in Bethpage recently celebrated the meaning of Memorial Day. After studying a unit on veterans, the students used their math skills to create paper lanterns in red, white and blue to decorate

the classroom. Family members who served in the military were invited to the celebration and were asked to speak with the class about their experiences.

Parent Michael Monteleon, who served in the Navy during the Gulf War, and grandfather Edward Pecinka, who was a Marine during the Korean War,

shared their memorabilia and experiences in serving with the class.

After answering questions and being presented with cards of thanks from the students, Mr. Monteleon and Mr. Pecinka stayed to eat red, white and blue treats with the class.

The skies above Coopers Beach in Southampton may have been filled with clouds this Saturday, but they were also filled with hope! Long Island

residents gathered at Coopers Beach once again as Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) hosted its 7th Annual Kites For A Cure, on Saturday, May 25th, raising more than $50,000 for lung cancer research. From 4 to 6 p.m., participants braved the wind and rain to gather at the beach and kick-start the summer season in the Hamptons.

“Kites For A Cure continues to be one of the ‘musts’ of Memorial Day weekend in the Hamptons – rain or shine!

It’s a chance for the entire family to come out to

beautiful Coopers Beach and celebrate the start of summer,” said Mark Epley, Mayor of the Village of Southampton. “We are proud to host Kites For A Cure in Southampton each summer – it gives us the opportunity to bring families together and bring attention to the nation’s #1 cancer killer.”

Mayor Epley served as the Honorary Commodore, memorializing his father, who lost his own battle with lung cancer nine years ago. New York State Senator Lee Zeldin and his family also joined the Mayor at Coopers Beach

for a fun afternoon of kiteflying.

In addition to the kites flying at the event, Kites For A Cure also brings kites to fly in the windows of most merchants in the Village of Southampton.

Thanks to support from the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and local schools, most stores feature beautifully painted kites in their windows to show their care for the cause and the community.

At the event itself, with sponsorship from Rechler Equity Partners and The Hampton Business District at Gabreski, funds raised

at the 7th Annual Kites For A Cure will go directly to UALC’s national lung cancer research grant program. Refreshments by Tate’s Bake Shop and Hint water, and music provided

by WEHM radio station kept the crowd at highenergy.

“The wind and rain could not dampen our spirits this Memorial Day Weekend. We are so happy to be a part of this community and work together toward a cure for lung cancer,” said Gregg Rechler, managing partner of Rechler Equity Partners, who lost his father, Roger, to lung cancer. “We are

grateful to the Village of Southampton, the Southampton Chamber of Commerce and the many local businesses who support this event year after year,” added Linda Wenger, Uniting Against Lung Cancer’s Executive Director.

For many teens, the end of the school year is bittersweet. As soon as the final bell rings, students’ attentions shift from school, directly to unemployment.

What should be a time of merriment soon proves to be anxiety provoking.

Scrambling for a position, many students will fall victim to the minimum wage, monotonous positions that deprive them of summertime enjoyment.

From the moment one embarks upon his first job, he or she becomes an adult. This hopeful teen now has the luxury of paying taxes, lengthy obligations and an overwhelming commitment.

But it isn’t all bad.

These children quickly learn the value of money.

It takes quite a bit of effort to make a dollar nowadays. The students that are employed can finally pay for their own movie tickets and even foot the bill after dinner.

For me, a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years, the excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming.

The pride I felt hanging that coconut air freshener from my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me.

While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for

rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard-earned money.

Some parents are wary of pushing their offspring directly into the workforce, and rightfully so! Letting your precious baby grow up is hard, but the rewards that even the most trivial of summer jobs can bring your child are endless. It truly pays to work!

On top of building one’s résumé, a summer job is a “hands-on” learning experience that no amount of studying can produce. If you find yourself looking for something to do this summer, maybe it is time to find employment!
