CERT, or Community Emergency Response Team, is a training program that teaches citizens basic disaster response skills so that they can respond to emergencies before professional responders arrive.

My husband loves grapefruit at breakfast, so my son planted some grapefruit seeds to grow his Dad his own grapefruit tree, but nature played a trick.

The sun shone brightly down, the rains brought nourishment, and a seedling popped up.

We watched with gladness, measuring the sapling as it grew, dreaming of big juicy grapefruit.

It grew and grew and grew... into a mulberry tree.

We were all surprised, and amazed, at the multitude of animals that arrived.

Cardinals nest in the tree and flit around the yard.

A possum quietly feasts on the berries, hidden by the darkness of night.

Doves, robins and whippoorwills glory in its fruit and dazzle us with song.

Squirrels playfully romp through the branches, showering berries to the ground.

Nature played a trick so that my son, who cares for animals so deeply and watches over nature so intently, could bring so much of both to our yard.

Nature played a trick, and the fruit our tree bears is not solely for our enjoyment.

Perhaps I’ll have to learn to make mulberry syrup and mulberry jam, or maybe the trick is just to munch them right off the tree like the many visitors to our yard.

Perhaps that was nature’s trick all along.

For those who want the thrill of blasting an ear of corn through the air, Harbes Family Farm is set to launch their new Corn Cannon during the festival.

The Corn Cannon uses compressed air to shoot the ears at targets downrange behind Harbes Barnyard Adventure.

Harbes Barnyard Adventure also includes a bounce house, a bee museum, pig races, Bunnyville, Goat Mountain, a Hedge Maze, the Three Little Pig’s houses, and numerous other activities and exhibits of farm animals.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Rain By: Jamie Lynn Ryan This seems to have been the weather forecast for the last, I don’t know, two or three weeks or so, give or take a day when it was obviously, undeniably… raining. What to do with this kind of uncertainty?

Cancel all plans and batten down the hatches “just in case,” right? Um… no.

I shake my head when I see people frantically rearranging their schedules to accommodate the weather – that great, unpredictable force of Mother Nature that we are all beholden to. Why? Chances are, the

so-called experts will be slightly off, or, better yet, completely wrong. Best to cover all bases by predicting a little of everything, no?

No. How about some good old-fashioned meteorology to back up these forecasts – and future-casts? Or better yet, how about we focus on getting the one-day right before expanding into the next 7-10 days?

Life is unpredictable enough as it is. The last thing we need is others’ farflung foresight thrown into the mix to ensure that no plans are ever made, nothing is ever done and we all just sit around and “play it safe.”

Put it this way, you could do nothing, go nowhere, see no one, experience zilch ... and your own four walls and ceiling could come crashing down around you. So better to get out and see the world, no?

I think so. Which is why, sometimes to my detriment, I refuse to put any plans on hold until I look out my window and decide for myself. There are far too many, more important things to worry about. A storm cloud hovering overhead is the least of them. Besides, after the storm, you just may see a rainbow.

School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) has announced that registration is now open for the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Summer Day Camp, which is being held in cooperation with Dowling College for the second year in a row. The camp will run from July 22nd to July 26th at Dowling College, located at 150 Idle Hour Boulevard in Oakdale. This summer camp is designed for children ages 9-18 and is meant to inspire Long Island students to become interested in science, technology, engineering and math.

There will be beginner and advanced levels for FIRST LEGO League (FLL) campers, as well as sessions for high school robotics campers.

Each FLL level will be divided into teams who will build and program robots to perform tasks.

On Friday, July 26th, parents and friends will be welcome to attend a demonstration of what their children had learned as the campers program their robots to execute certain tasks.

High school students will learn all of the systems that comprise a large 120-pound robot and will actually program and work on existing robots. This camp is designed for incoming freshmen, sophomores and students at all levels who haven’t played an active technical role on a high school robotics team.

The day camp will run each day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Campers should arrive at 8:45 a.m.

A Day of Independence what we consider to be a budding tradition. The seven of us got ice cream afterwards as well. The day wouldn’t have been complete without every single one of us getting ridiculously sunburnt and buying all of the aloe on Fire Island.

237 years ago, our founding fathers wanted to create a place where people could do what they wanted in an effort to make themselves happy.

All of America’s troops and fallen heroes gave their lives for the hope that we could forever have our rights. They wanted to enable people to create an environment where people could enjoy their freedom.

We did just that! A day filled with beach volleyball and family gave way to a night of fireworks and fun.

We enjoyed the company of

each other, and didn’t go to sleep until the morning of July 5th!

After months of structured schooling, the slack to do whatever we wanted was welcomed and greatly appreciated. On the fourth, we weren’t forced to study or to work; we were free to do whatever we desired.

On that day, we were able to enjoy life to its fullest.

We were able to relax, take in the sun and enjoy the company of family. None of these opportunities would have been possible without the sacrifice of our soldiers and the flying of our colors.

Enjoy your country, it is the greatest in the world because of the freedom available to us. Isn’t that what the Fourth of July is all about?

The Brooklyn Academy of Music, a multi-arts center in downtown Brooklyn has, for more than 150 years, presented worldrenowned programming in

music, dance and theater, opera, film and much more, showcasing the work of emerging artists and innovative modern masters.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts’ alumni include actors Natalie Portman and Olivia Thirlby, singers Jane Monheit and Mariah Carey, and members of major music and dance ensembles.

Usdan’s program features more than 40 three, four and seven-week programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, writing, nature & ecology, and chess. No audition is needed for most programs. Each summer, 1,500 students are transported to the Center in air-conditioned buses each day. One-third of Usdan’s students attend on scholarship. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. July 4th has historically been a day of extreme patriotism. This pride in our nation is brought about by the realization that we are actually free.

We live in such a great place that emphasizes our ability to choose! The right to make ourselves happy is undoubtably taken for granted, but on the Fourth of July, we display our thanks.

This year, on the fourth, my cousins and I realized OUR freedom. On this Independence Day, we did what made us happy, not our parents. We were truly free. We were able to break away from the monotonous family functions and enjoy the sand, the sea and the sun.

Our small group traded in the traditional family barbecue for a “doublecheeseburger pizza”, in

bringing the new theater work to life.

Andrew Copper, Associate Director of Usdan Center and Usdan’s coordinator of the project, says “Usdan Center is thrilled to partner with BAM for the first time. We are excited to see students from both organizations work together to create an exciting, vibrant and unique piece of art.”

BAM’s one-week Style and Substance program, for ages 12 to 14, from July 22nd-26th, aims to build style, tone and voice and improve critical thinking through responses to fellow students’ work.

Its Fisher Center, which opened last September, was designed as a dynamic, flexible space for new programs, Brooklyn artists and the community, with an expanded roster of talks, education and family programs.

The Youth Summer Programs offer a variety of one and two-week workshops in Creative Play, Video Game Design and Creating Musical Theater.

Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, now entering its 46th year, has introduced the visual and performing arts to more than 60,000 children ages 6 to 18 at its 200-acre woodland campus in the Huntington area of Long Island. In its Creative Writing program, started many years ago, small groups of creative writing students engage the forms of poetry, short fiction and playwriting in covered, open-air studios.

The program culminates in the publication of Usdan’s literary magazine, Painting with Words, a multidisciplinary publication which includes student-produced poetry and writing.

Besides the regular faculty, guest teachers including Broadway playwright Michele Lowe, have taught Master Classes.

A new collaboration will take place this summer between Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, and the new Youth Summer Programs of the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM).

Students from Usdan’s Senior Division Creative Writing Major will travel to BAM on July 23rd and 26th to work with students in BAM’s Style and Substance creative writing workshop.

Led by Usdan teacher David Surface, and BAM teacher Richard Hoehler, students will together create a narrative project that will become a play or series of interwoven monologues and dialogues.

Students will work to create the theme of the piece, and will then write a script for a new piece of collaborative theater.

The culminating event will take place in BAM’s new Fisher Building on Friday, July 26th, and will feature professional actors

Classic Cruise Nights For those who are looking to take a trip down memory lane, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Pinto encourages residents to come out for the return of Classic Car Cruise Nights, held on Friday evenings throughout the months of July and August, at the LIRR Train Station parking lot on Sunrise Highway in Massapequa. Beginning on Friday, July 12th and continuing through Friday, August 23rd, the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation Division will present the classic car events, which will display vintage automobiles in fun and festive atmosphere.

“Getting our first car and taking it out for a spin is one of the most cherished memories that many of us have of our youth,” Councilman Pinto said. “At these events, it’s amazing to see how the owners of vintage autos have maintained their prized automobiles so well, and kept these vehicles in

such great condition. For our younger residents, it’s also a chance to see a part of American culture up close.”

Councilman Pinto added that residents are invited to Classic Car Cruise Nights, free of charge. Those who have a vintage car that they wish to display must have a valid registration and license plates for the vehicle, and must register upon arrival. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. Vintage car owners are required to donate two cans of food in order to display their autos. All vintage cars may only be driven by their owners, who are required to stay for the entire event.

Councilman Pinto noted that Classic Car Cruise Nights are limited to automobiles. As such, motorcycles are not permitted.

“I invite residents to come to the Massapequa Train Station for one of these classic car events,” concluded Councilman

Pinto. “Enjoying these cars is a great way to spend a summer evening.”

Oyster Bay Town residents are reminded that the Second Half of the 2013 General Tax Levy is due on July 1st, but can be paid without penalty through August 12th. “By law, a taxpayer has a 40-day penalty free period from the date the tax is due during which payment may be submitted,” Receiver Stefanich explained. “After the 40 days, a one percent penalty is added for each month the tax remains unpaid, retroactive to July 1st.”

When paying the tax bill in person, taxpayers are reminded to bring the entire tax bill with their payments Residents who prefer to mail in their payments, should send them to the Office of the Receiver of Taxes, 74 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay, N.Y. 117711539. Payments must have a United States Postal Service postmark dated on or before August 12th to avoid late payment penalties. Payments being made by mail should include the second half

stub. Residents should NOT write on, fold, staple or otherwise deface the tax stub as it can cause the computer system to reject the payment.

“In addition, there is free access to tax bills online with the ability to pay taxes through ACH check payment or credit card,” Receiver Stefanich added. “These services are available through a link on our Town website, www. oysterbaytown.com.”

Residents should be aware there is a service fee if they choose to pay taxes online (Town of Oyster Bay receives no portion of fee).

“When calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes, residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available,” the Receiver noted. “This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.”

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson advises residents that the Town has available to residents an Important Phone Numbers brochure, offered free of charge.

“The Important Phone Numbers brochure also provides an overview of the Oyster Bay Town Board, explaining how the Town’s legislative body works,” Councilwoman Johnson stated. “This brochure will help residents gain a better understanding of the responsibilities of the

Town Supervisor and the six Council members who comprise the Town Board.

VOLUNTEERS HONORED - Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos recently thanked Hurricane Sandy volunteers at the CERT Hurricane Sandy Response Volunteer Recognition Lunch in West Bethpage. CERT, or Community Emergency Response Team, is a training program that teaches citizens basic disaster response skills so that they can respond to emergencies before professional responders arrive.

Showcasing Their Talent The artists created their pieces between September 2012 and March 2013 as part of ADRC’s Art Expression Program, in which ADRC staff members assisted on-site facilitators to help the residents/ participants bring their creative thoughts to life. The paintings were available for purchase, with all proceeds going towards

the ADRC’s Art Expression Program.

In addition to the artwork that was displayed, tea and desserts were served for all the guests to enjoy. Over 250 families were in attendance for the exhibit. The program is funded in part by the Fay J. Linder Foundation and the New York State Department of Health.

60’s sensation “The Zombies” featuring Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, and an evening with Bernie Williams and his All-Star Band kick off the first week of the 2013 Town of Oyster Bay “Music Under the Stars” concert series, according to Town Supervisor John Venditto.

On Wednesday, July 10th, The Zombies featuring Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent will bring their swinging 60’s hits to Ellsworth Allen Town park, Motor Avenue, Farmingdale.

“From their gorgeous melodies to their breathy vocals and choral back-up harmonies, The Zombies left a lasting impact when they first burst onto the scene in the 1960’s,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“Now, almost 50 years later, Colin Blunstone and Rod Argent, two founding members of The Zombies, continue to spread their musical legacy with rich harmonies and intuitive melodies, on both classic hits and new material.”

For fans of rocking and swinging big band music, Thursday, July 11th, will offer a special treat, when

“The Jumpers” come to Tappen Beach, Shore Road, in Glenwood Landing.

“The Jumpers are an 11 piece orchestra that combines the musical styles of swing, jazz, big band, and rock,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“Come out for a night with the Jumpers Orchestra, and see the American songbook performed like you’ve never heard before.”

On Friday, July 12th, Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra will bring the “Magical Music of Disney” to young and old alike at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, Jericho Turnpike, Woodbury.

“Dean Karahalis and The Concert Pops will bring Walt Disney classics to life at this concert, featuring music from early classics all the way through recent releases,” Supervisor Venditto said. “I encourage families to come out and enjoy this musical journey to the far off places featured in Disney’s classic animated films.”

To close out the first week of “Music Under the Stars,” on Saturday, July 13th, residents are in for a

real treat when former New York Yankee and acclaimed guitarist brings his All-Star Band ‘from center field to center stage,’ at John J. Burns Park, Merrick Road, in Massapequa.

“Most people know Bernie Williams as the five time All Star and four time World Series Champion who patrolled center field for the New York Yankees for 16 years, but he is also a highly acclaimed guitarist who has two much loved albums to his credit,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“Bernie Williams and his All-Star Band deftly fuse styles of jazz, rock, and tropical rhythms. I think this will be a performance that all residents will enjoy a great deal.

The Supervisor noted that all performances begin at 8:00 p.m. Residents are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket. The United States Power Squadrons District 3 will hold Rendezvous East, their premier summer event in Greenport July 26th through 28th.

The last five rendezvous in Greenport were so successful; the squadrons are back again. With Greenport’s long maritime heritage dating back to the

1600’s, what a great place for a gathering of Long Island boaters. While each local squadron schedules their own events, Rendezvous East brings together boaters from all District 3 squadrons across Long Island for the summer’s biggest boating celebration.

Many other squadron members will be arriving by land. Festivities begin with a Commander’s cocktail party on Friday evening. They continue on Saturday with breakfast, a flag raising ceremony at 11

a.m., a pot luck lunch and then, a night time dance under the big top attended by approximately 360 party goers including some local dignitaries.

After the meeting, Captain Mike Caldwell of the Long Island Maritime Museum in West Sayville gave a presentation about the museum, its sailing program and the prized 1888 New York Oyster Sloop Priscilla. He entertained and educated the group on the background of Long Island’s nautical history and interesting facts about the oyster industry. He talked in depth about the historical preservation of Priscilla and how people today can enjoy sailing on it. At the end of the lecture, our members shared their expertise as a historical society and gave recommendations to Captain Mike on how to spread the word and grow as a historical treasure of Long Island.

As preservationists of Roslyn, the audience was

very appreciative of the detailed restoration of the ca. 1880’s Priscilla.

The sloop, of a design distinctive to the shallow depth of Long Island’s Great South Bay. Though over sixty feet long, she did not have a fixed keel, but was sea worthy and stable because of its broad beam (width) and used a centerboard, which could be raised and lowered (a thousand pounds by block and tackle) as needed.

After serving continuously, dredging for oysters until the early 1960’s, she was converted to a cruising schooner until being acquired by the long Island Maritime Museum. Not only was she meticulously restored, mostly by highly skilled volunteers, but today earns her keep through the museum’s sailing program.

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy today welcomed its incoming Class of 2017, consisting of 238 plebe candidates from across the country. Upon arrival, the Congressionallynominated future

Midshipmen began a rigorous, 18-day regimen of academic, military, and physical training known as Indoctrination (INDOC), -- their first step toward becoming future leaders and licensed maritime officers.

“The new plebe candidates make up one of the most diverse classes in Academy history,” said Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Ph.D., superintendent at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. “I look forward to seeing entire Class of

During their first day of INDOC, plebe candidates received their first berthing assignments, were issued uniforms, received their first military haircut, and learned to salute in their

first official formation.

Upon graduation, Midshipmen receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and governmentissued merchant marine officer license that will help ensure a steady stream of U.S. merchant

marine officers to support the nation’s economic and security interests. Kings Point graduates must serve five years on active-duty in the military or work in the maritime industry for five years, as well as eight years in the reserves.

Identity Theft Prevention Tips (NAPSI)-A recent online survey by Toluna/ Greenfield Online, Inc. found that while most consumers try to protect their identity, many admitted to risky behavior that could put them at risk for ID theft. To help educate and protect consumers, world-renowned fraud prevention expert Frank Abagnale offers these tips: • Shop smart: Limit the credit cards you carry.

•Keep receipts and check your statements: Examine every charge on your

statement before paying.

Your receipts provide a great cross-reference check and guard against suspicious activity. You have 30 days from the date of your statement to notify your financial institution of any discrepancies; otherwise, you can be liable for any purchases.

• Protect your computer when online shopping: Make sure your security patch and anti-virus software are updated regularly.

Consider technology to protect

against potential viruses.

• Watch where you shop online: Look for the lock icon on the site’s browser status bar, a sign that that site is safe. If you have never heard of a website before, see if it has security precautions in place and isn’t a fake site set up by identity thieves.

•Don’t write checks: Give cash or gift cards.

The Problem Automobile crashes remain a leading cause of death for children and it’s important that parents consistently and correctly use the appropriate car seat to keep their child passengers safe.
