Heavy “down-paws” and muddy fields accompanied a half a million people to Woodstock in 1969. To mark 44 years since “Three Days of Love and Peace,” the Hempstead Town Animal Shelter will be waiving all pet adoption fees during its Free Love Woofstock and Newpurrt Festival on Saturday, August 17th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shelter, where it’ll be raining cats and dogs!

Like Woodstock, Woofstock will be a fun and unique event, and the town is inviting all residents to come enjoy the festivities in their tie-dyed clothes and love beads. Shelter dogs will be performing tricks, agility trials, swimming and demonstrating noseworks (dogs use their sense of smell to locate and identify certain objects).

Of course, Woofstock wouldn’t be complete without some great music, and the Animal Shelter is proud to welcome Walking the Line and a surprise guest for this event. In

Five young Long Island musicians have been designated Tilles Scholars, following a competitive audition process that was held under the auspices of Tilles Center for the Performing Arts. The winning students have received financial support for attendance at the 2013 LIU Post Chamber Music Festival.

It seems unfair that the government can just force a family out of their home.

Sure, they offer a small sum of money to cushion the grief, but is it really adequate compensation?

Our government claims to buyout the houses at market value, but with the economy in shambles as it is, market value is poor.

In my town, on Fire Island, you can refuse the buyout. You can simply say no to the puny sum offered to you. But if you do so, the government reserves the right to just take your house in the event of another disaster. If your

house gets more than fifty percent damaged in the future, you can kiss your home goodbye.

After refusing this buyout, your insurance rates would skyrocket. You would not be able to get flood insurance. Would it even be worth staying?

The economic toll that this refusal would have on the future market value of your house is astounding.

Why is this fair? Why do we accept the fact that the government controls this facet of our lives?

Some of the members of my town are doing everything we can to make sure our homes stay intact through the winter. We are dropping thousands

of dollars on “trap bags,” which promise to naturally build up a dune and protect our little town.

Beach Scraping is also an option, albeit a short-term solution. These small scale projects are doubtfully going to give us adequate protection from Mother Nature.

In actuality, we do not need this protection from the elements; we need it from the government.

When my mother came to America thirty-five years ago, she was not expecting to be at the mercy of the government, she was expecting total freedom. Eminent Domain contradicts those freedoms promised to us all.

a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions.

First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm).

As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

Kim and John Ragone of Manorville haven’t felt a sense of normalcy in their lives since their 17 year-old daughter Rachel was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare disease in which cancer cells are found in bone or in soft tissue. But with the opening of the new Ronald McDonald Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, they have found a place to relax during their daughter’s frequent hospitalizations.

“The room will be a blessing for my family,” Kim Ragone said during ribbon-cutting festivities on August 1st. “This gives us a sense of normalcy, and something as simple as having this dining table to eat at will never be taken for granted…. The living space here gives parents a place to feel comfortable and still be there to support their child.”

Stony Brook Children’s partnered with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island (RMH-LI) to develop the Family Room Program, a family-friendly respite area located on the 11th floor of the hospital. As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital, Stony Brook Children’s serves a population of 1.5 million. The room will provide support for families of more than 7,000 children who are hospitalized each year at Stony Brook Children’s, helping to alleviate their anxiety of having a child in the hospital by keeping them close to their child’s bedside.

“We look forward to today’s events as just the first step in a long-term relationship with the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island, as we continue to grow Stony

Brook Children’s into the finest children’s hospital on Long Island,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., MD. “This new facility represents the beginning of a tremendous partnership between the Ronald McDonald House and Stony Brook Children’s,” said Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman,

Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s. “By providing a calm, restful environment for families of our patients, the room will improve parents’ ability to advocate for their children. Research shows that a family’s presence helps children heal faster and cope better with the stress of being in the hospital.”

The Family Room offers a fully stocked kitchenette, a dining area, a lounge area with a flat-screen television,

A van will transport families to airports, doctors’ appointments and drug stores, and will run errands for the facility. It will be staffed Ronald McDonald House of Long Island employees, as well as approximately 40 volunteers, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week, with services provided at no cost to families of children being cared for at the hospital.

“The Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s is an exciting and much-needed expansion of our services into Suffolk County,” said Matthew Campo, Executive Director of RMH-LI. “It will enable the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island to serve thousands of additional families, offering comfort and convenience for parents who often have to travel back and forth to the hospital to be with their child.”

The Ronald McDonald House welcomes volunteers to assist with the Family Room and operate the transportation program, as well as committee and advisory board members to recruit volunteers, build awareness, plan events, raise funds and engage in public advocacy.

Charitable contributions and donations of supplies are welcome, including pantry items, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, bathroom supplies and gift cards.

Robotic Skills Demo On July 26th, campers at School-Business Partnerships of Long Island’s FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Summer Day Camp demonstrated their robot performance skills for family members at Dowling College in Oakdale, which hosted the camp for the second year in a row.

Over a five-day period, students learned how to build, operate, and program a robot to perform certain tasks. That knowledge was put to good use, when they demonstrated to family members what they learned over the course of a week. Elementary and middle school-aged children built and programmed robots with LEGO pieces and moving parts, while high school students displayed their 120-pound robot.

There was a sharp increase in enrollment from 16 campers last year to 53 this year, due to the children’s growing interest in SBPLI’s FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Robotics Competition programs.

These programs will ultimately create an educated workforce for Long Island, by opening the minds and students to career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

“It was wonderful to see so many young people interested in robotics and technology,” said Joani Madarash, Executive Director of SBPLI, who made an emotional plea to parents in attendance about the critical need for funding of SBPLI to sustain these outstanding

science and technology.”

Debra Winter, Assistant Superintendent of the Longwood School District and whose college-bound son had participated in the FIRST Robotics Competition throughout high school, echoed that sentiment, as the camp and SBPLI’s programs have impacted her family for the better.

“Without SBPLI and FIRST, my son would not have found his voice or his passion,” she stated. “He has many friends now and is looking forward to a career in robotics engineering — something that we never would’ve thought possible six years ago.”

Nassau Community College’s program for Nursing Workforce Diversity (NCCNWD) has been awarded $1.045 million by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to increase educational opportunities for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, including racial and ethnic minorities that are underrepresented in the nursing profession.

In seeking this federal funding, NCC highlighted the fact that the Long Island region is currently experiencing workforce shortages in the nursing field at the same time that there is an increasing demand for those services as the region’s population ages. NCC further noted that the significant under-representation in the workforce of nurses from diverse backgrounds has been linked to health disparities because individuals from different ethnic and racial backgrounds tend to seek care from professionals with similar backgrounds.

Working in partnership with several middle and high schools, NCC will achieve the goals of this grant though a multipronged approach. These steps will include providing career information and counseling services in the middle and high schools to assist in creating a pipeline of students interested in nursing and other health related careers.

NCC staff will collaborate with high school teachers and school district coordinators in providing potential nursing students with information regarding the academic preparation required to be a nurse, the entry level salaries of nurses, and the nursing job market in order to ensure that

counselors are able to provide students with accurate information and effective encouragement.

“I’m very excited, because the services we’ll be able to provide as a result of this grant will both bring more nurses to Long Island and offer qualified students a choice they might otherwise not have considered,” said Dr. Carmelle Bellefleur, Project Director of the program.

She added that the NCC Nursing Department works in partnership with such hospitals as North ShoreLIJ Health System, Winthrop University Hospital and South Nassau Communities Hospital.

According to Dr. Kenneth Saunders, Acting President of Nassau Community College, “In many respects, this grant is exactly what NCC is all about. It will provide the resources to enhance our outreach to the community and promote the goal of increasing educational opportunities for students. In addition, it will advance the objective of improving the quality of life of Nassau County’s residents.”

The grant will also provide funds for a mentoring initiative designed to increase the retention rate of disadvantaged students already in the nursing program and as well as funds to foster the development of “cultural competency,” whereby students will become more aware of the social, cultural, political and economic realities of the range of communities that they will be serving upon graduation.

Stipends and scholarships will also be available through the grant, which are particularly important in making their participation in NCC’s nursing program more affordable.

Tournament Registration Open If hours of fishing followed by a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, raffles, awards and prizes sounds like a perfect day to you, then you’ll want to sign up for the 28th Annual Town of Oyster Bay Bluefish Tournament, scheduled for Sunday, September 15th, according to Councilman Chris J. Coschignano.

“The Town’s Bluefish Tournament is a great allday sporting event with wonderful prizes and great camaraderie,” Councilman Coschignano said, adding that the tournament runs from 4:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The entrance fee for the tournament, which is open to anglers of all ages, is $30 for Town residents and $40 for non-residents.

Registration is limited to the first 350 boats, so sign up early.”

Summer Enrichment Bethpage students ranging from those entering kindergarten through seventh-graders had the opportunity to advance their educational scope with a variety of courses offered through the district’s elementary summer enrichment program.

Tennis Fundraiser Take out Alzheimer’s Disease with that “Winner Shot.” On Friday, August 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Berts Tennis Fundraiser, which will be held at SPORTIME on 175 Merrick Rd. in Lynbrook from 7 to 10 p.m.

Families can come play tennis while also enjoying food, raffles, and prizes.

The cost for Berts Tennis will be $45 per person. All profits will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center and any other donations will be included to help achieve the organization’s goal of a future free from Alzheimer’s disease.

The ADRC is also asking participants to bring any pictures of family members

or friends fighting the disease so they can be displayed on the Memory board.

Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which is headquartered in Bay Shore and has a satellite office in Southampton — is the only local Alzheimer’s Disease advocacy and educational facility whose mission is to provide hands-on support and services to families on Long Island and the New York metropolitan area. ADRC works with family members, health care professionals and researchers to ensure quality health care and support to those impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease through care and consultation, information

and referral, training, support groups, and caregiver safety products.
