St. Joseph’s College (SJC) is pleased to announce that it will hold its 31st Annual Scholarship Gala on Friday, November 8th at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with cocktails followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. This year’s black tie affair will honor SJC President S. Elizabeth A. Hill, C.S.J., J.D., who will be retiring in June 2014. Proceeds from this event will be used to establish the S. Elizabeth A. Hill Scholarship Fund.

“It has been a great blessing and a true pleasure to work with S. Elizabeth

for so many years, as she represents the best of leadership and integrity in every sense of the word,” said Vice President of Institutional Advancement Nancy Connors. “I will miss working with her every day, but I am grateful that she is an alumna of the College and will never be that far away.”

One of the region’s most influential women, S. Elizabeth has been president of SJC since 1997. Since her inauguration, she has overseen the expansion of two campuses, most notably the construction of a state-of-the-art Business

and Technology Center and 24.8-acre premiere outdoor sports facility on the Long Island Campus, as well as launching a comprehensive, capital Master Plan for the Brooklyn Campus that included a 44,000-squarefoot athletic complex.

Under her leadership, the College’s enrollment and range of academic offerings have continuously

increased while tuition has remained consistently among the lowest in the New York metropolitan area.

During her tenure as president, S. Elizabeth secured several large grants from the federal government, including the largest in the College’s history. She was also responsible for securing successful major and estate

One Year Later By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Almost exactly one year ago, Long Islanders experienced what can only be described as the wrath of Mother Nature in the form of Hurricane Sandy. In the midst of power outages and damage assessment, we here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers managed to publish a newspaper, and I – displaced from my home on the south shore – attempted to compile a few thoughts in an effort to produce a column amid the chaos. Here are a few excerpts…

We always think it’s not going to happen here.

Whatever “it” is, we have grown so used to absently

observing most catastrophes from a distance, never foreseeing the day when they will wind up right in our own backyards. Literally.

Some people lucked out.

Others were not so fortunate, and will spend the next few weeks and months – years even – cleaning up all that was left behind, however little it may be.

They say someone always has it worse off than you, and this is true. Except in this case, many of those most devastated happen to be our family members, friends and neighbors – the worst off of whom don’t even have a home to go back to.

As with all events of this magnitude, peoples’ true colors tend to shine through, for better or worse. Here in the Long

Island/New York City area, we have witnessed a bit of both.

But there are slivers of brightness struggling to shine through the chaos.

Strangers banding together to organize food and clothing drives, businesses opening their doors to the public for heat, shelter, a place to charge cell phones and laptops and reconnect with the outside world… all signs that, amidst the mayhem, some basic humanity does exist.

Let’s all hang in there.

Together, we can – and will – get through this.

And we have. Mostly. Some better than others. Still a long road to full recovery, but at least we have begun the journey.

EAGLES VICTORY - The Bethpage community gathered on October 12th for the district’s annual homecoming parade and game day celebration. The parade, with a new route this year, made its way down Stewart Avenue and around the high school loop, showcasing the magnificent floats of each high school class and club. The kickline team won the competition for their exceptional float, spirit, attire and theme.

Homecoming King John Paul DiGiovanna and Queen Briana Saur brought up the rear of the parade. The Eagles varsity football team took on the Plainedge Red Devils, ending in an Eagle victory.

Learn To Skate Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn To Skate” this winter by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay’s Ice Skating Center, located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, according to Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano.

“Skating lessons for people of all ages take place at our rink throughout the year,” Councilman Coschignano said. “Registration for Series 2 (November 3rd through December 21st,

2013) will begin October 20th. Those interested can register at the rink, online (www.TheRinx. com) or by phone 516.797.4126.”

“Learn to Skate” offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels of figure skating and hockey.

Skaters are grouped based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. The program is 7 weeks in length (although there will be no classes on November 28th and 29th) and all

classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session.

For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 10:50 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for NEW members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week 7 with a recommendation for next series. There will be no refunds or

makeups and skate rental is not included in price. Helmets, gloves or mittens and warm layers are recommended for all skaters.

As we head into the holiday season, it is crucial to realize just how caught up we can get in the trickor-treating, gift buying and pumpkin carving. Sure, these things are important, but the true measure of a successful holiday is the quality of the memories we create with our family.

Some of my fondest memories took place around a Christmas Tree.

Others derived from the carving of the turkey. More still were captured while dressed up in Halloween garb with my mom, dad and little brother.

I vividly remember being carried in my father’s arms, dressed as a pumpkin, while my brother was in

his stroller, dressed as a pea!

As Halloween is right around the corner, our minds shouldn’t be focused on getting to Christmas, but enjoying the ride.

Each day is a blessing.

Throughout my seventeen years on this Earth, I have learned many things.

To me, the most important tidbit is that: “In today’s society, the family unit is broken up. When we’d sit down to dinner together as a family, we’d learn about each other.

Party Showcase, a 22 year-old event planning company, has teamed up with ORT America to hold its 2nd Annual Long Island Expo at the Melville Marriott on Sunday, October 27th, from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

Mall Walking Program Residents can stay active this fall by signing up for the Town of Oyster Bay’s free Mall Walking Program.

According to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson, registration is underway for the twiceweekly program that gives anyone, regardless of age, the opportunity to exercise at area malls.

“Many of us exercise regularly in the summer, but not as much when the weather starts getting colder,” Councilwoman Johnson explained.

“Walking is a wonderful form of exercise, something that can be implemented as a lifelong activity in an effort to stay active.

The Town instituted this program to allow people to work out, regardless of the weather outside, and to learn some valuable tips on how to get the most benefits out of walking.”

The popular program, which runs from Monday, November 4th to Thursday, December 5th (excluding holidays), is offered at two locations, Broadway

Mall in Hicksville and Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa.

The Hicksville Mall program will start on Monday, November 4th and runs on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., and the Massapequa Mall program will start on Thursday, November 7th and runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Hicksville walkers will meet in front of the escalator near the Ikea entrance, and Massapequa walkers will meet inside on

“The Town’s Co-Ed Walking Mall Program is the perfect way to start a new chapter of physical fitness in one’s life, resulting in a more fit and active lifestyle,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Mall walking is an excellent choice for anyone who has been thinking about beginning a new exercise routine.

It’s a positive step for general good health and gives residents an opportunity to make new friends in the process.”

Councilwoman Johnson also noted the importance for residents to check with their physicians before participating in any physical fitness program.

Registration forms can be picked up at Town Hall North and South, Community Park facilities, and at local libraries. They can be returned to the Recreation Division at Town Hall South, Parks Department, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa or handed in the first day of the program.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto invites residents and their families to the Town of Oyster Bay’s 5th Annual Family Fall & Halloween Festival.

On Saturday, October 26th, the Town will host the second fall family festival from 1 to 4 p.m. at Marjorie R. Post Park, at the corner of Unqua and Merrick Roads, in Massapequa. As in years past, this fun-filled event takes place on both the Town’s North and South shores. The first festival was held earlier this month at SyossetWoodbury Community Park, in Jericho.

“I invite residents to come out and celebrate the arrival of the fall season at this annual free event, which features fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, as well as bouncies, games, apple cider and popcorn,” Supervisor Venditto said.

“There will also be a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to explore and have the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin, which they will then be given the opportunity to decorate. In addition, children are welcome and encouraged to come in costumes.”

The Supervisor noted that this event is being held rain or shine. The Family Fall & Halloween Festival is sponsored by the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division.

Eight Inductees The Bethpage School District hosted its first Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Dinner for six individuals and two sports teams that have had a positive impact on the district. The event was sponsored by the Bethpage Educational Foundation, which has raised more than $100,000 over the past six years in support of programs and scholarships for Bethpage students.

Honorees were: · Anne DiPrima – A 42year staff member who was an athletic coordinator at JFK Middle School for 27 years and coached sports at the middle school and high school levels. · Tom Frost – A 1968 graduate of the district who ran the Bethpage unit of PAL and served on the

Bethpage School Board for 21 years. · Edward Mangano – A 1980 graduate and the current Nassau County executive whose family resides in and is still heavily involved with the district. · George McElroy – A 19year principal of Bethpage High School who was and continues to be extremely active in the Bethpage community. · Mary Morante – A 46year staff member in the district whose entire family resides and is active in the district. · Patrick Rhatigan – A 1987 graduate who recently obtained the rank of colonel and is currently commander of the 19th Airlift Wing at Little Rock Air Force Base in Arkansas.

· The 1981-82 Girls Swim Team – Team was among the most successful teams of any sport in the district’s history. · The 1993 Varsity Football Team – First team to win the coveted Rutgers Cup, starting a 32-game winning streak.

All honorees and their families were served a catered dinner by volunteering high school seniors, followed by coffee and cake. VOLUNTEERING AT THE INN - Bethpage High School Student Civic members Firas Akbik, Josett Bernberg, Melissa Cao and Deena Hadhoud recently served desserts, hot coffee and sandwiches at Mercy Inn Soup Kitchen at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Wyandanch. FIRE PREVENTION DAY - The Syosset Fire Department’s Annual Fire Prevention Day and Open House was recently held at the department’s headquarters. The event is held to educate the public on eliminating fire hazards within homes, as well what to do in case of a fire in order to get out of a burning building safely. There were displays, drills and fun activities for children. Among those on hand were: Syosset Fire Department Commissioner Robert Swanson, Commissioner Richard Roseo, ViceChairman Roy Dhawan, Chairman Giovanni Graceffa and Commissioner Thomas Feeney, Jr.
