The West Babylon Union Free School District prides itself on being fiscally solvent and proactive in planning for the future of its students. This is achieved through the careful and ongoing analysis of operating expenditures and programs to confirm that the district is being run efficiently and effectively. Administrators and district staff continue to work together to ensure that the integrity of the West Babylon academic and athletic programs remains intact and that students continue to have opportunities to flourish. Several steps have been taken to streamline expenditures within the district in order to present a proposed 20132014 budget that falls below the allowable tax levy cap while saving money for the future. Last year, teacher retirement incentives were negotiated, saving the district money on salary and retirement

costs. Additionally, the district will see costsaving staff reductions due to the consolidation of the Language Arts and Testing Office. The duties currently held by the administrator of this department, who will be retiring in June, will be shared among several other district staff members. The district had worked with the custodial staff to renegotiate the terms of their contracts. As such, head custodians now receive compensatory time for weekend work rather than overtime. New hires of the CSEA and WBAA units, hired after this year, will contribute a higher percentage toward their health insurance as a means to reduce district costs. The district has been awarded several grants that support its mission without adding additional burden to the community. Grants include the STLE: Strengthening Teacher Leader Effectiveness

Grant, the Carol M. White PEP Grant and the Virtual AP Grant, all of which support professional development and technology for the district. An additional review of materials and supplies, as well as equipment and textbooks, was another means by which the administration was able to streamline costs. The district has moved to the use of electronic report cards this year so as to reduce the cost of paper and mailing. In addition, it continues to utilize BOCES services whenever it can to maximize BOCES aid. The district recently approved a contract with a consulting firm to review its state aid submissions to determine whether it is maximizing the state aid in every area, and has initiated a longrange planning group to perform a consolidation feasibility study.

They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

There will be several large inflatable rides, Carnival Games, face painting and a huge Hobby train exhibit for children. The North Babylon library will be hosting Children’s crafts. The North Babylon Fire Department will be selling their famous Sausage and pepper Heroes. The North Babylon Applebee’s will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs. Cub Scout Pack 112 will be selling ice cold drinks. Other delicious treats include zeppolis, mini calzones, Pretzels and chocolate covered strawberries The NB Lions Club is happy to announce that The 2013 Grand Marshall will be Richard Schaffer who is the Town of Babylon supervisor. There will be a special ceremony in his honor starting at 12:45 p.m. in front of the North Babylon Fire Department. Several dignitaries and community leaders have

been invited to participate. Entertainment Highlights include a Barbershop Quartet and a Mini Production of Hairspray will be performed by the NB High school students. Robert Moses middle School will be providing their Marching Band for the ceremony. Some of the members of the popular Rock band Full house will also be Jamming on the stage. The Guide dog foundation is hosting a parade of Puppies at some point during the day. Admission is free to this event. We are seeking donations of eye glasses, to help us continue servicing the visually impaired. There will be a large Lions Club Welcome Center where you can bring your donations. Boy Scout Troop 399 will be raffling a Kayak adventure package at their base camp. This event is a Historic Milestone for North Babylon and it will help build and enhance community pride and bring much needed commerce to local businesses!

Babylon Athletes Honored Babylon Mayor Ralph Scordino and Suffolk County Legislator Wayne Horsley of the 14th Legislative District were among a handful of notable local officials on hand to recognize three of Babylon High School’s awardwinning athletic squads on April 10th in Babylon High School’s Rowe Hall auditorium. Among the honorees were the Babylon Panthers football team (Long Island champion, Rutgers Trophy winner), the Long Island champion Babylon Panthers girls varsity volleyball team and the Panthers boys basketball squad (Class B Long Island champion, Class B New York State finalist). The Panthers football team went undefeated, won the Long Island championship and earned the Rutgers Cup for being the most outstanding football team in Suffolk County. Babylon football was a scholar-athlete team with a cumulative GPA of 93.753. Jake Carlock, Joe Cosby, Jeann Cruz, John Dertinger, Nick Santorelli, Eric Schweitzer, Kevin Smith, Andrew Watson and Luke Zappia were recognized as an All-Division first team, and Brian LosKamp, Matt Pinto and Alec Zamet took AllDivision second team honors.
