Long Island youth have seen enough marketing from the tobacco industry and will join teens around the country to stand up and speak out against big tobacco, today on National Kick Butts Day. In New York State, 107,000 high school students smoke and over 22,000 kids under 18 become new daily smokers each year. To tackle this issue headon, the Tobacco Action Coalition of Long Island will be partnering with youth groups from Nassau and Suffolk Counties to hold Kick Butts Day activities. “Youth smoking is still a problem,” said Susan Kennedy Director of the Coalition. “According to the Surgeon General’s 2012 report Preventing Tobacco Use Among Youth and Young Adults, youth tobacco use is a “pediatric epidemic” and is caused, in part, by tobacco industry

marketing.” Retailers in New York display an average of 32 square feet of tobacco products or the equivalent of more than 200 cigarette pack faces. In New York, 82% of retailers dedicate at least half of the space behind the checkout counter to openly visible tobacco products. “32 square feet is larger than a billboard,” said Kennedy. “And it’s illegal for the industry to use billboards.” Kick Butts Day, organized by the Campaign for TobaccoFree Kids, is a national day of activism that empowers youth. There will be more than 1,000 events in schools and communities across the United States. For more information about tobacco marketing and how youth across the state are speaking out, visit the www. SeenEnoughTobacco.org.

The championship game pitted the two top seeds the Massapequa Longhorns and the Philadelphia Falcons against each other. The Longhorns again used great pitching by Chris Hayes and Ryan Heidrich along with six hits, six walks and 10 stolen bases to score their seven runs and take the Championship 7-4, bringing the trophy back to Massapequa.

outreach and scheduling appointments. “My deep appreciation goes to both donors and those behind the scenes,” Councilman Muscarella said. The Councilman noted that anyone who missed the Town’s blood drive and would like to donate can call the New York Blood Center at 1.800.933.2566, or visit www.nybloodcenter.org. “You hear about blood shortages all the time, and you may wonder why there is always a sense of urgency,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that every two to three seconds, someone in the U.S needs blood, and that one in three Americans will need a blood transfusion at some point in their lives, the importance of donating blood comes into focus. There is no substitute for blood. If people need blood, there is only one place to turn…volunteer blood donors. The problem

is that nationwide, the average donation rate is only five percent of the eligible population, and here on Long Island, the donation rate is less than two percent of eligible donors, so there is a constant strain on supplies and a constant need for donations. For the nearly five million people who receive blood donations annually, your donation can make the difference between life and death.” The Councilman added that the Town’s summer blood drive is scheduled for Thursday, August 1st. For information, contact his office at 516.624.6304.

Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella announced that the Town collected 100 pints of blood at its March 7th drive, and thanked Town employees and local residents for their assistance in making the drive a success. “We have always been able to count on Town employees and residents to roll up their sleeves for our blood drives,” Councilman Muscarella said. “When you consider that each pint of blood, when broken down into component parts, could potentially help save three lives, 300 people will benefit from the donations made on March 7th. And that’s what giving blood is all about…saving lives.” The Councilman went on to say that while blood donors are heroes in his book for keeping our area’s hospital shelves stocked with lifesaving blood, a successful blood drive takes the hard work of Town employees, who help with

Honor A Veteran

LONG ISLAND – A new report has just been released which reveals 7 costly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse - financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY www.facebook.com/instepwithjamie

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Helping our patients feel better since 1985.

See What The Experts Have To Offer We always strive to reach our patients’ goals whether it is to run a marathon, or reach for a jar on the top shelf at the local supermarket. We use the most up to date treatment techniques supported by the latest research. We create an individualized treatment plan based on your functional level and needs, and progress you accordingly. Additionally, you will be provided with a home exercise program to enhance your recovery and prevent future problems.

Our #1 priority at Island Sports Physical Therapy is patient education. We ensure that every one of our patients has a thorough understanding of their condition, and treatment plan. We cover: • Pre-operative care • Exercise demonstration • Injury prevention • Post-operative precautions • Family education • Return to sport progression We understand your concerns, and vow to be with you throughout the whole rehabilitation process.

So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

The Kids of Distinction program focuses on activities participated in outside of school. These activities should have, in some way, benefited the community. “Each year, applicants represent a diverse group who really demonstrate caring and compassion to those around them,” Supervisor Venditto said. Robert added, “We are confident that this year’s group of winners will be equally compassionate and worthy of this honor. To date Kids Helping Kids has distributed $30,000 in academic scholarships to help these students fund their college education and in these tough economic times every dollar helps.” Nominees will be placed in two categories, those currently in fifth through eighth grade and those in grades nine through 12. The age groups were established so nominees can be evaluated fairly against their peers. Three winners will be selected

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto, together with Kids Helping Kids by Kids Way, Inc. co-Founders Robert A.J. Eslick and Philip M. Eslick, announce their co-sponsored Kids of Distinction Scholarship Program for 2013. “The ‘Kids of Distinction’ Scholarship Program was initiated in an effort to recognize outstanding young people who have been active in exceptional endeavors in their community,” Supervisor Venditto said. “As in years past, six exceptional Town of Oyster Bay youngsters will be honored for their commitment to their communities.” “The concept of the program is to recognize kids for taking part in activities done on their own initiative,” Philip said. “Past winners have certainly fit the bill, many going above and beyond the call of duty to help others in their community.”

Water Into Wells

Barbara Ralph’s thirdgrade class at John H. West Elementary School in the Plainedge School District has been collecting empty water bottles to benefit Wellspring Water Inc., a nonprofit organization founded by 2010 Plainedge graduate Kimberleigh Costanzo. After a mission trip to Africa with her college in May 2011, Kimberleigh and her mother Gillian decided to collect water bottles and recycle them

for five cents until they had enough money to pay for the installation of a well in the Changa Changa Community School in Zambia. Kimberleigh had personally visited the community school and witnessed for herself the need for the well. Having accomplished that goal, Wellspring Water intends to continue providing water sources to people in need while reducing the build-up of plastics and

aluminum on our planet. Ms. Ralph, Kimberleigh’s former teacher at West, learned about Wellspring Water in February and decided that her class could help. To date, the class has collected approximately six large garbage bags of plastic bottles to benefit the cause. Kimberleigh visited the third-graders to pick up the donation and explain the mission of her work.

and economic principles. It has a mayor, realtor, government, a bank sponsored by Capital One, a newspaper, a wellness center and such professional businesses as a lawyer and accountant. The goals of the program include learning how to write checks, balance checkbooks, fill out job applications, apply for bank loans, make deposits, prepare cost sheets, price

for profit, solve problems, and work as part of a team. Elementary school students learn about the free enterprise system, careers, economics, citizenship and the general skills needed in the world of work. All of the students worked very hard and they now have a new appreciation of whats involved in both running a business and a day at work.

HEART & HUSTLE - The St. Rose 4th grade boys Heart & Hustle team, coached by Jon Wallace, Coach Clark and Coach Valentine. Heart & Hustle posted a 8-3 record, falling just short of a League Championship. Coach Wallace preached defense and rebounding and the team responded with a relentless effort on the defensive end, as well as on the boards, all season. The team, comprised of ten 4th grade boys, represented St. Rose athletics well. Sportsmanship, fair play, teamwork and comradery, the staples of St. Rose basketball, was what Heart & Hustle was all about.
