Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. today announced it has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with the Daviess County Animal Control of Owensboro, Kentucky to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center

Last Hope Receives Grant in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. Last Hope is a nonprofit organization with a mission to save deathdue, abandoned and stray animals. Besides assisting needy dogs in Long Island municipal shelters, Last Hope has developed a partnership with several shelters and transport networks in Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia,

where Last Hope renews hope for discarded dogs that otherwise do not stand a chance. Since 1981, Last Hope has been striving to improve the quality of life for homeless pets. Last Hope placed 300 dogs and 646 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2012. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of

adoptable Kentucky dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically

been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized. Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess County approached us about saving a Coonhound named Valentine that they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Kentucky dogs and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. We can continue to make a difference for dogs at home, plus dogs from faraway.” The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more

than 8,000 local animalwelfare partners across the country, the foundation donates approximately $15 million a year to make a difference in the lives of millions of animals. The organization is funded through donations raised during fundraisers conducted in Petco’s more than 1,200 stores across the country, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions. Money raised helps fund animalwelfare organizations, spay and neuter efforts, animal-assisted therapy programs and humane education. The majority of the funds raised remain in the communities where they were raised, and the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal-welfare efforts. In 2012, the Petco Foundation surpassed $100 million in funds raised for companion animals since the organization was created. To learn more, visit www.petcofoundation. org.

Home Run To End Hunger

TIME TO THINK ABOUT

The New York Mets are once again teaming up with Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, to score a Home Run To End Hunger. Be a part of the action and join Island Harvest at Citi Field on Wednesday, May 8th at 5:40 p.m. as the New York Mets take on the Chicago White Sox. This event presents a great opportunity for Mets fans to enjoy the game from a private suite while contributing to Islands Harvest’s effort to end hunger on Long Island. Tickets cost $175 for adults and $145 for children under the age of 18 with multi-ticket packages and sponsorships also available. Buffet and limited bar service is included, and you get the opportunity to step right

up and meet Mr. Met! As an added feature to this year’s Home Run To End Hunger, a limited number of owner’s box seats (located directly behind home plate) will be available for purchase. Tickets are $600 for those looking to indulge in the owner’s experience. These tickets include private catering, bar service and a commemorative souvenir. Tickets to this event are limited and sold on a first come first serve basis. Those interested are urged to act fast, as tickets always sell out quickly for this fan-favorite event. For reservations, contact Elissa Weick at 516.249.8528, extension 116 or Elissa@ islandharvest.org by April 30th. More information about this event can be found online at www. islandharvest.org.

Being Domestic By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I am not a domestic person by nature. Or, at least, I never thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.

Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when

you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

Vandalism is out of control in the Massapequa Community. There have been recent incidents of vandalism and burglaries to signs belonging to members of the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce who are advertising their businesses under the Massapequa Chamber of Commerce signs. The monies generated from these advertisements help support the Chamber office serving our 300+ members. The Chamber also provides deserving high school students of the Massapequa community with scholarships awarded to both Massapequa and Plainedge students. Additionally, these monies support the Chamber’s Annual Food and Toy Drives, assisting the less fortunate in our community. Therefore, I ask the person/s responsible for these crimes to stop hurting our community! Remember, when caught, you will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law! The first of eight 2013 Homeowners Cleanup programs for Oyster Bay Town residents will take place on Saturday, April 20th, according to Town Councilman Chris J. Coschignano. “Homeowners within the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal District may take unwanted, non-hazardous refuse to the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 BethpageSweet Hollow Road, Old Bethpage, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.,” Councilman Coschignano said. “This program is an especially popular one within the Town, and with ‘spring cleaning’ fresh on the minds of all as the weather warms up, this program might just be the catalyst needed to tackle that cumbersome garage or basement cleanup.” The Councilman noted that proof of district residency must be shown. Additionally, if you plan to bring any boats or trailers, proof of ownership must be provided and signed over to the Town. The boats must be drained of all oil, gas and other fluids, and all batteries must be removed. Bushes, tree limbs, fence posts and similar items will be accepted as is and need not be broken into smaller pieces. Used tires, large metal items in excess of four feet, clean fill, clean broken concrete, and boats and boat trailers will also be accepted. Passenger cars, vans, pickup trucks and small trailers are admitted to the program. Six-wheel or larger vehicles are not permitted. C o u n c i l m a n Coschignano noted that additional Homeowners Cleanup dates are: Saturday, May 21st; Saturday, June 9th; Saturday, July 14th; Saturday, August 11th; Saturday, September 22nd; Saturday, October 20th; and Sunday, November 18th. Residents can call 516.677.5943 if they have any questions.

Prepare a deck or patio for entertaining Few things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host parties or intimate gatherings all year long. Establishing an entertaining space and maintaining that space are essential when planning another year of fun in the sun. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the season approaches, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. * Check the area for any needed repairs. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails flush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio

blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult with a contractor. * Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie’s List to read reviews of his or her work. * Think about closing in a portion of a deck or patio. The use of a canopy, netting or even greenery to protect an entertaining space can help minimize weather-related damage to outdoor furniture. Netting will keep a good number of biting insects at bay when the weather is warm and humid. Having a bit of concealment also means you can create a private space that isn’t easily viewed by neighbors or passersby.

* Plan well-defined areas. Just as rooms serve different purposes inside of the home, outdoor areas can be separated according to usage. Establish a sitting nook where guests can gather and talk. Have a bar or serving area where refreshments are made and served. Make sure there is a shaded area for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don’t forget to establish a spot for the kids to converge with scaled-down amenities.

* Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today’s yards are extensions of a home’s interior. Guests no longer want to sit on uncomfortable metal or plastic furniture. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look. * Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns

* Consider a fireplace or fire pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fire for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fireplace, pit or chiminea is a conversation-starter, a decorative focal point, and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. Place the fire wisely and with concern for safety. It should be out of the way of foot traffic, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point.

or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors. When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.

This annual event is an inspiring one, helping to remind residents that we all can do our part to help preserve the precious ecology of one of the Town’s crown jewels, Oyster Bay Harbor.” Supervisor Venditto went on to say that volunteers are being sought to participate in the cleanup, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Interested individuals and groups can get further information by calling the Town’s Department of Environmental Resources at 677-5853. writer struck me as being as advanced as the best of my English majors.” She even managed to combine the two disciplines in her research; she has written a paper on the topic of finance in Shakespeare. As a participant in the LIU Post Honors Program for academically gifted and motivated students, she wrote a thesis on Islamic accounting and hopes to one day help settle inconsistencies in Islamic accounting standards. Ashour said her studies at the LIU Post School of Professional Accountancy took her from a fundamental knowledge of her field –journal entries, complex calculations and financial statements – to an understanding of the underlying human

Seeking Veterans Nassau County Legislator Dennis Dunne, Sr., is urging all Nassau County veterans of World War II to join Honor Flight Long Island for the opportunity to visit the WWII Memorial in Washington D.C. at no cost. HFLI helps to honor the brave men & women who served their country and are now in the twilight of their lives. HFLI is part of a national Honor Flight organization, that flies veterans to Washington, D.C. to see their memorial (and other sights in Washington) - absolutely for FREE! There are approximately 40,000 World War II Veterans on Long Island and in the five boroughs of New York City. To date, HFLI has flown approximately 900 of those great men and women to see their Washington D.C. Memorial. In addition to a free flight, HFLI provides each veteran with a guardian escort for the day, bus transportation in D.C and breakfast, lunch and dinner. “Our urgent mission is to see that EVERY World War II Veteran in our area

who wishes to visit the Memorial will get his wish. We’re not ready to rest! Help us find every eligible member of this Greatest Generation before it’s too late,” said Chris Cosich, HFLI President. “Guardians pay their own way for the privilege to escort a veteran to their memorial and it’s truly a life changing event... for both the veteran and volunteer!” “It is my pleasure to help the men and women who have given so much for the freedom of our country,” said Legislator Dunne, a U.S. Marine wounded in Viet Nam. “Every vet should sign up for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!” Please visit http:// honorflightlongisland.org or call 631.702.2423 for more information on the next flight scheduled for June 1st, 2013, as well as applications for veterans and guardians. Veterans must complete and submit their application to participate. They are called on a first-come-first-served basis so encourage all to submit an application.

She said she can now take a piece of information, understand its sources and consequences not just in the accounting records but also in the “real world,” and then be able to analyze the conclusions she has drawn. Ashour has tutored accounting students, volunteered to help lowincome Long Islanders prepare their taxes, and written for The Pioneer, the campus’s awardwinning newspaper. “Extracurricular activities have given me a sense of being part of a community,” said Ashour. “I have been able to be of assistance to those who needed me, whether it was through

action or only words – and will continue to provide my knowledge and skills for the help of others as long as I live.” The valedictorian is selected by a committee comprised of faculty and administrators. Candidates are nominated by faculty members and judged on their G.P.A., a personal essay, recommendations and an interview with the selection committee. LIU Post, formerly known as the C.W.
