Summer doesn’t mean the end of the hockey season for Town of Oyster Bay youngsters, according to Town Councilman Anthony D. Macagnone, who announced that the indoor Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, will once again, provide the venue for the Summer House League Ice Hockey Program.

“The Summer House League Ice Hockey program, which is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, is one of the Town’s most popular summer recreational programs,” Councilman Macagnone stated. “It provides youngsters ages seven to 12 with the opportunity to hone their skating and hockey skills under the guidance of Town of Oyster Bay ice hockey coaches.”

Registration will be held on Tuesday, April 30th

and Wednesday, May 1st, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Space is limited and registration will be done on a firstcome, first-served basis.

If there are still openings after May 1st, registration will be conducted in the Parks DepartmentRecreation Office at Town Hall South, 977 Hicksville Road, Massapequa, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. To register, a parent or legal guardian will need to bring a copy of the child’s birth certificate, proof of Town of Oyster Bay residency (a tax, utility bill, etc.), and a check or money order for the appropriate amount.

These documents must be provided even if the child has been in previous Town programs. The fee to register is $150 for one child, $225 for two children in the same family, and $75 for each additional child in the family.

Players will get two evaluation sessions, eight games plus playoffs and a jersey.

Evaluations will be made on Sunday, May 5th and Sunday, May 12th from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Games will be played Sunday mornings and Monday and Thursday evenings. The season will run from July 7th through August 26th.

“Our Summer House League is always well run and a positive experience for the players,” Councilman Macagnone said. “It’s a great way for our hockey players to maintain their skills, have fun, and keep active during the summer.”

Participants must wear full ice hockey gear. The schedule of games and an equipment list will be distributed at registration.

The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected.

Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at

10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m.

Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants.

The Healing Heart 5K

hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together.

I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that.

Ironic, isn’t it?

But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction?

The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

Summer Ice Hockey The Town of Oyster Bay is offering a Summer Ice Hockey Instructional Program for ages 3 to 6 (born 2006-2009), according to Town Councilman Joe Muscarella, who announced that the indoor Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, will provide the venue for the highly regarded program.

“The Instructional Ice Hockey program, which is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, is an outstanding recreational program,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “It provides youngsters ages 3 to 6 with the opportunity to learn skating and hockey skills under the guidance of Town of Oyster Bay ice hockey coaches.”

Since the program’s inception last November, Project Coastal Care has treated more than 1,200 people in a mobile medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad

Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst.

The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August.

The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver.

Patients have been treated for a range of illnesses and injuries, including upper respiratory infections, minor lacerations and maintenance of chronic and acute illnesses. In addition, the van’s medical staff provides flu and tetanus vaccinations. All of the care has been delivered free of charge, regardless of whether patients are insured.

“We’re providing a valuable service to people during a difficult time in their lives and what has proven to be a continued and extended challenging period,” said Maria Torroella Carney, MD, North Shore-LIJ’s director of communitybased geriatrics in the department of medicine, who leads the mobile van project. “It’s very rewarding to assist these residents as they put their lives back together.

We’re bringing quality healthcare resources from the health system directly to their communities.”

Massapequa High School has moved on to the Regional Quarter-Finals of MSG Varsity’s, The Challenge, and will take on Farmingdale High School on Sunday, May 5th at 6:30 p.m. on Cablevision’s Optimum, Channel 14.

Massapequa High School is joined by seven other schools from Nassau County, as they head into Regional QuarterFinal play, while trying to qualify for the Tri-State Championship Playoffs.

Back for his fourth season as host of “The Challenge” is Jared Cotter, host of “MSG Varsity’s Talent Show” and a popular semi-finalist from American Idol. Cotter will serve as moderator, testing competing teams on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, current events, math, and science in front of a live studio audience.

“The action is really heating up as we progress to the final rounds of the Regional Championships,” said Cotter. “You can see the intensity of the player’s faces and excitement of the fans building as we move on in the competition.”

The Massapequa High School team is represented by: Carl Surrow, Robyn Tse, Joseph Zappa (Captain), Chris Bonetti, (Alternates) Mike Novet and Jacob Koch.

The academic advisor is Rena Drezner.

“The Challenge” includes 192 high schools from the entire tri-state area — Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. Long Island will be represented by 32 high schools from Nassau County and 32 high schools from Suffolk

County. A new matchup can been seen every Sunday through Friday at 6:30 p.m., on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s Optimum Channel 14.

Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school.

The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500.

Massapequa Cubscout Pack 696 gathered together for their monthly pack meet on Friday night, April 19th, to learn about Electical Power.

An experienced hightension power line operator demonstrated the potential hazards of high-tension wires using a doll-house sized model of power lines on mounted on telephone

poles.

This LIPA teaching tool had live electrical current running through the power lines. This allowed the scouts to get a very life-like idea of what can happen if a downed line touches a school bus or a construction digger hits a power line on a project.

The boys also had the opportunity to see what

can happen if a person climbing a tree attempts to touch a power line, and to understand the hazards of kite-flying near power lines.

The scouts were thoroughly engaged and went home understanding the concept of “path to ground,” which electricity always tries to travel.
