From July 7th through July 14th, twenty-eight aspiring performers will gather in the village of Oyster Bay to take part in the second season of Oyster Bay Music Festival, an eight-day intensive musical immersion and concurrent free live classical music festival.

Ranging in age from 10 to 22 and hailing from communities throughout Long Island and greater New York, these highlevel classically-trained musicians will spend their days coaching with expert faculty, rehearsing solo and chamber music, taking seminars on audition preparation, performance psychology, body awareness, and performance presentation.

Unlike other programs for young musicians, however, Oyster Bay Music Festival’s students spend part of each day performing for live audiences. The festival

hosts thirteen public events during the week as well as six programs at senior centers and several “pop-up” concerts in the village. “Our students perform a lot, sometimes twice a day,” says Lauren Ausubel, codirector and flutist. “This gives them unparalleled opportunity to develop their performance skills, to get comfortable in front of an audience, and to realize that, without the audience, there is no concert.”

Unique to Oyster Bay Music Festival is its dedication to the art of performance and the revival of classical music as a vital part of community.

“As performers and teachers we continually confront the perception that classical music performances are stuffy and inaccessible,” says co-director Pippa Borisy, pianist and director of the Great Neck Music Conservatory. ”We want to create an experience of live performance, rooted in the community of Oyster Bay, that is fun, enlightening, and full of surprises.”

Classical music will appear in unexpected places over the course of the week: top among them might arguably be Oyster Bay’s famed Cruise Night on Tuesday, July 9th, where Steinway & Sons will park a concert grand in front of 20th Century Cycles for a program called “Vintage Cars, Vintage Music”; a family event on the showroom floor at BMW of Oyster Bay on Friday, July 12 called “Bavarian Musical Works: Bach, Beethoven, Brats and Beer with BMW”; or “Clarinets, Clavichords and…Cucumbers?”, a concert and “vegetable orchestra” workshop with Dale Stuckenbruck at Raynham Hall Museum on Saturday, July 13th.

Robyn’s project, “DNA Barcodes Help Identify Insects Pests Seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Newark International Airport,” has been presented at the American Museum of Natural History, and her work with NYU Gallatin School won the Bronze Medal in iGEM Americas East Jamboree, a premier international undergraduate synthetic biology competition. She is continuing her research throughout the summer at Rockefeller University.

Eight Months Out By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In the heat of summer, on the brink of the fourth of July, I can’t help but reflect upon that evening, two days prior to Halloween, when everything changed.

Who knew that, as the last golden days of autumn drew to a close, a storm the likes of which few had ever seen would wreak such havoc – the kind that we, as residents of Long Island, are still attempting to recover and rebuild from over eight months later.

Normal?

What’s that?

Sleeping in your own bed?

Being able to walk through your house without tripping over piles of sheetrock? Funny

how adverse conditions force us all to adjust our conception of what, exactly, is routine.

What would have been unthinkable circumstances just a year ago has now become the “norm,” that revolving, whirlwind of chaos where each day brings new issues, and the finish line continues to stretch just a bit farther into the horizon.

I don’t think anyone anticipated the intensity with which Superstorm Sandy would hit, nor the continuing repercussions it would entail. And now, just ahead of yet another dreaded hurricane season, we wait… and worry… some from the newly renovated confines of

our own homes, others from hotels and mobile trailers and temporary rentals, all anticipating that day when, somehow, we can move on and leave the madness and mayhem behind for good.

Mother Nature is an uncontrollable force, and clearly, one to be reckoned with and taken seriously. The best we can do is to prepare as much as possible, cross our fingers and hope for the best. ... And appreciate whatever sense of “normalcy” we have, while we still have it.

They say you never truly appreciate what you have until it’s gone. Best to hold onto it for as long as you can. These are the days to remember.

Yoga, dance instruction, and aquatics are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy this summer as a participant in the Town of Oyster Bay Senior Summer Program, Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joseph Muscarella announced.

This year’s program will begin on Monday, July 8th and continue through Friday, August 16th.

“The Town’s Senior Summer Program has proven to be one of our most popular programs, and I’m pleased to announce that the Town’s Department of Community & Youth Services, Division of Senior Citizen services, has put together another outstanding year of activities for residents of the Town,” said Councilman Muscarella. “This program offers our residents many great summer activities, spread out at various Town facilities. I invite our senior residents to participate in these summer activities.

The program is the perfect way to be active, enjoy the company of others, learn something new and most importantly, have a good time.”

On Mondays, the North

Massapequa Community Centers will offer yoga, ballroom dancing and two sessions of bridge, with one of these specifically designed for beginners.

On Tuesdays, Bethpage Community Park will offer an aquatics class, and the Marjorie R. Post Community Center will offer tai chi classes, line dancing, an exercise class, and an aquatics classes.

A special Wednesday program will be held at the Glen Head Community Center and will feature the music of John Walters, tai chi, bingo, a swim at Tappen Beach or a visit to a local farm stand.

Additionally, each of these Wednesday programs will finish with special entertainment.

Councilman Muscarella added that bus transportation is available to the Glen Head Community Center and that interested seniors must register for it with the Senior Citizens Services Division at 516.797.7940.

Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Park will hold an aquatics class on Thursday mornings, while Syosset-Woodbury

Community Park will offer ‘cards and conversation,’ yoga, line dancing, an advanced exercise class using hand weights and an aquatics class. On Fridays, at the North Massapequa Community Center, there will be beginner’s bridge, tai chi, line dancing and an additional session of bridge. Also on Fridays, an aquatics class will be held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park and ballroom dancing and tai chi will be held at the Hicksville Community Center.

“There is something for everyone at the Town’s Senior Summer Program,” Councilman Muscarella concluded. “I encourage the Town’s senior residents to get in on the fun and participate in this program.”
