Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day?

Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know?

Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere.

Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the

BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree.

School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter.

Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done.

Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second.

Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone.

Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse

than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother.

It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great.

If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right?

I think that will be my mantra for this summer.

Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment.

And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things.

a new recycling program: the TerraCycle Drink Pouch Brigade.

Under this program, students have been collecting empty foil drink pouches, which are very difficult to recycle and usually end up as garbage in landfills.

TerraCycle cleans the drink pouches and turns them into new and useful consumer products such as totes, backpacks and lunch bags.

This means the usually discarded packages are not going into landfills; better

still, the new “upcycled” products use much less energy to make than items made from raw materials.

Although the recycling project is still underway, TerraCycle has already accomplished its goal of collecting 1,001 empty juice pouches. For every pouch recycled, TerraCycle will also send funds to the National Wildlife Federation to protect 36 square feet of wildlife land critical to the safety of bison, grizzly bears, gray wolves and other wildlife.

Million T-Shirt March As part of the Plainedge commitment to effectively address bullying at all grade levels, the three elementary schools in the Plainedge School District – John H. West, Eastplain and Schwarting – took part in the nation’s largest and most ambitious anti-bullying rally ever attempted.

On May 2nd, the Million

T-Shirt March Against Bullying was held with the goal of having more than one million people nationwide wear the same anti-bullying shirt and march for the cause.

This was also an attempt to set a Guinness World Record of the most people wearing the same shirt on the same day.

At each of the schools,

students participated in an anti-bullying workshop prior to the march and then proceeded to carry signs and banners as they walked around the school grounds in their Million T-Shirt March shirts to take a stand against bullying. Students also took a pledge against bullying and created antibullying songs.

Our Massapequa Chamber of Commerce Street Fair, was blessed with perfect sunshine and packed with people enjoying the entertainment, music, rides, vendors, and assortment of foods and refreshments. This is the Chamber’s 65th Anniversary and First Street Fair entirely made possible through the generosity of our Sponsors and The Town of Oyster Bay.

On Saturday our local students performed displaying their talents with music, karate, and dance performances. Rides, games, vendors, delicious foods and live bands were filled along Veterans Blvd.

Sunday was the MAIN EVENT packed with over 75 vendors on Broadway with strolling live entertainment, a petting zoo, pony rides, magic by John Lepre and Tin Can the Clown. In addition, B-103’s DJ, The Wiseman provided live broadcasts throughout the day.

Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Joe Pinto reminds residents that seasonal beach stickers may be purchased beginning on Saturday, May 11th, so that Town residents may get their beach stickers ahead of time and avoid the rush during the Memorial Day weekend, when some Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open for weekends.

“So many residents enjoy the beautiful beaches that we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay and eagerly look forward to the first opportunity to enjoy those beaches during the Memorial Day weekend,” Councilman Pinto said. “Town residents, who purchase a Town beach sticker in advance of the beaches opening, will avoid the possibility of waiting in line during opening weekend.”

The Councilman announced that beach stickers will be for sale daily, beginning on May 11th, at Tobay Beach, John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and Beach in Oyster Bay from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and from 1 p.m. until 2:30

p.m. In order to purchase a beach sticker, residents must bring their driver’s license and vehicle registration. In addition, residents must come in the vehicle they will be driving to the beaches as stickers are affixed to vehicles at the time of purchase.

“Fun-filled days at Town of Oyster Bay beaches are not far off and the Town’s beach sticker is a great value,” added Councilman Pinto.

“It may be used at all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, so residents will have an opportunity to really enjoy the wonderful beaches we have here in the Town of Oyster Bay throughout the summer.”

Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening for weekends only on Saturday, May 25th. All Town of Oyster Bay beaches will open seven days a week beginning on Saturday, June 22nd. The beaches will remain open through Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. Formerly known as the Bruce Estate, the 120 acre parcel of pristine land, now serving as the Town’s golf course, was acquired by the Town in the 1970’s.

Although there were many proposed uses for the property, it was Supervisor Colby who thought that a golf course may best showcase and preserve the land. Even the manor on the estate was kept intact because of its unique and historically significant architecture.

The building has since been beautifully refurbished, while still maintaining its architectural character, and serves as the course’s club house, pro-shop, restaurant and catering hall.

The breakfast featured an explanation of the new New York State tax cap, an overview of the district, curriculum enhancements and program highlights.

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that on Saturday, May 18th, at 11:30 a.m., the Town will conduct a ceremony to officially re-name its golf course in honor of Joseph Colby, a resident of Massapequa Park who served as the Town of Oyster Bay’s 56th Supervisor. The Honorable Joseph Colby was appointed Supervisor in 1977 and was elected to that office five times in the following ten years.

He was then elected as a New York State Supreme Court Justice in 1988, a post he held through his retirement from public service in 1992. The unveiling will take place at the main entrance of the course off South Woods Road in Woodbury.

SPRING CELEBRATION - The students of Mrs. Hall’s Kindergarten class at East Lake School recently celebrated the beginning of Spring with a class party. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music

and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes in clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows.

The academy concludes

with performances by all students in each arts discipline.

This four-week program begins Monday, July 1st, at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation.

Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement.

The Massapequa Partnership for Career Development, an advisory board set up to help students bridge the gap between school and the workplace, and the Ames Campus also extend their gratitude to all those involved in making Career Day a huge success.

As a follow-up to Career Day, teachers Alyssa Levine and Karen Matros, coordinated several community service events, which provided valuable, hands-on experience for nearly 100 students. They interacted with residents at The Bristol Assisted Living Facility, baked desserts for residents of Ronald McDonald House, where families of sick children stay while their children receive medical treatment; assisted staff members at the United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County, assisted with activities for preschool children with special needs at ACDS of Plainview, and beautified Massapequa Lake, a historic community landmark.

Putting her skills to action, Kotsonis illustrated what an auction is like by giving each student an envelope with fake money and auctioning off three Macbook computers to the highest bidders: Erin Enright, Christina McVicar, and Victoria Remi.

Kotsonis underscored the importance of taking charge of your education, working hard in and out of school, and being the steward of your own success.

“Having our alumni take the time to share career advice is an invaluable experience for our students,” said Katherine Knoepffler, who coordinated the event with Christine Poggioli.
