in Brooklyn, grew up in Valley Stream and is a product of Valley Stream Public Schools. She began her career in Franklin Square just shy of her 20th birthday after graduating from Hofstra University with a bachelor’s degree in history and education.

She also earned her master’s degree in Reading and Literacy, and a certificate of advanced study in Educational

Early in her career, she taught first, fourth and fifth grade at Franklin Square’s Washington Street School. Eleven year later she became the school’s Reading Specialist for remedial and enrichment students and then became the reading coordinator for the three elementary schools in the district. “There is nothing more rewarding than that ‘aha’ moment when a child finally gets it,” Iconis explained. “I always routed for the underdog, the one that may have struggled … because I believe that if a student tries hard enough, anything can be achieved,” she said. “I made time in my classroom for my students to teach…whether it was

as ‘teacher for an hour’ or ‘teacher for a lesson.’

When they were able to explain the material, that’s when I knew they got it. The experience builds confidence and selfesteem and gives everyone the opportunity to shine.”

In August, 1999 Iconis transitioned from teacher to administrator. She was hired by Massapequa School District as Assistant Principal of East Lake Elementary School and promoted to Principal

Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them.

• Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose.

• Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself.

• Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.

Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu?

A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated.

• Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage.

• Stay away from people who are sick.

• Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

• If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area.

• Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).

Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines?

A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable.

On fiscal responsibility and efficiency, she said, “We have been ahead of the curve to seek out consortiums and other means of curbing expenses throughout the district. As a result of those savings, we have been able to redistribute funds in ways that have improved our district for our students.”

On the early intervention program, she said, “The philosophy is that time and resources spent upfront to help students early on is most beneficial and cost-effective in the long run.”

On technology, “We are one of the strongest, most advanced districts in the state and we have a talented team that keeps us on the path of advancement.

And on her staff, “We

pride ourselves on being a friendly, accessible and open district. I believe in always having the conversation to dispel any misconceptions and to answer the questions our residents have. I encourage our residents to call if they have a question or concern. We are proud of what we do and we are here to help.”

During her first Superintendent’s Conference before the entire staff, she advised them to focus on “what is possible instead of what is probable. There are a lot of issues, from APPR, CCLS, differentiation; the profession is being attacked. We have to always remember what our focus is, and that’s the children. We can’t lose sight of that.”

Iconis lives in Garden City with her husband.

They have two sons, one is a composer/lyricist and the other is a teacher. The district is not yet planning to fill Iconis’ former position.

Iconis became Assistant Superintendent for Elementary Education in 2005 and then elevated to Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in 2009. As Assistant Superintendent, she played an integral role in the district-wide implementation of fullday kindergarten, the school-wide enrichment program, Magnet; and the balanced approach to literacy program. Two years later she took on the added responsibility of Student Support Services, which she handled until she was tapped for the top post.

Now, as Superintendent, new initiatives to strengthen support and achievement at Alfred G. Berner Middle School will roll out this fall. The most dramatic change is the

school’s shift in operations to what is called a “house structure.” This new organizational structure is designed to better meet the specific needs of students by making class scheduling more flexible and increasing continuity between students, staff and the curriculum on each grade level. The house structure is phase two of a multi-tiered plan to position the middle school for more rigor by the time elementary students instructed under the Common Core Learning Standards enter seventh grade. The first phase was the infusion of exploratory classes that enable students to discover interests and or/ talents outside of the core curriculum.

After success with the reading intervention program Read 180, the district is excited to pilot Math 180 in middle school math support classes.

Game Time By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Many athletes will tell you they view each game as if it is their last – win or go home, lose and face elimination. They claim it raises the bar by creating a sense of urgency often missing day to day.

In the case of the New York Yankees, the better part of the last month has had a “playoff” type atmosphere, with the team resurrecting itself from the ashes of the American League East to at least put themselves in contention

for a Wild Card berth.

That’s a far cry from a few months back, when it seemed that every game brought yet another player relegated to the disabled list and a growing tally of blowout losses that were rather painful to watch.

The point? For those non-Yankee fans, it just goes to show that, no matter how dire a situation may look, there is always hope. All it takes is the first step. And then the next.

And the one after that.

Momentum is the key to all progress. This doesn’t

mean that the outcome will necessarily turn out as hoped, but isn’t it better to make things exciting along the way? I think so. (Met fans might disagree.)

In fact, most fans have simply decided that baseball season is over - time to move on to football, to be followed in short order by hockey and basketball. But not so fast – as a very famous catcher once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Til then, sit back and enjoy the show. It’s going to be quite a ride to the finish.

Seeking Submissions Oyster Bay Town Councilman Joe Muscarella is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay, Department of Community and Youth Services, Cultural and Performing Arts Division, is seeking submissions for its 40th Annual Rotational Art Exhibit Program.

This program allows local artists to display their work at new venues in libraries, banks, government offices and local businesses on a monthly or bi-monthly basis.

“Both novice and experienced artists are encouraged to

enter a preview on Sunday, November 3rd,” Councilman Muscarella said. “The work is judged for acceptability into this program by professional artists and teachers.”

The Town invites local businesses to join in supporting these local artists.

“Each business selects the artists for their facility at the Artists Showcase on November 14th,” Councilman Muscarella explained.

“This gives local businesses the unique opportunity to both support local artists, in addition to offering their patrons the pleasure

of viewing artwork in a setting they normally wouldn’t.”

This program is free to both artists and businesses.

The application deadline for artists is October 18th, 2013 and for venues interested in displaying artwork, the application deadline is October 30th, 2013.

HEADING TO CLASS - As summer draws to a close, the students that go to Birch Lane Elementary school strapped on their back packs and head to school.
