Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything.

Reality is secondary.

Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts.

Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question.

I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way.

Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it?

I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger.

In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately.

What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed.

Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell.

And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Recently, the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund (BSSAEF) presented its 2nd Annual Dance Benefit at Bay Shore High School.

The proceeds from the benefit support the BSSAEF’s dance choreographer residencies at Bay Shore High School and Middle School. This year, performers included members of the High School Dance Team, winners of the 1st Annual BSSAEF Choreography Contest, the West Side Story Project, breakdance virtuoso and guest artist

Ivan Manriquez, and members of the Bay Shore Schools faculty.

Executive Director of the BSSAEF, Susan Barbash, presented a special audio/visual lecture entitled Great Dances On The Silver Screen. Many thanks to BSSAEF VicePresident Gregory Singer for hosting the event, as well as Cultural Arts Director Mr. Terry Nigrelli.

A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! MATH IN FOCUS - In February, Mary G. Clarkson families came out for an informative presentation on Math In Focus, Bay Shore Schools’ newly adopted Math program. Workshops were presented in both English and Spanish and tailored to grades K-2. The well-attended workshops, presented by Joseph Flick and Jacqueline Ribera, provided parents with insights into the program’s chapter assessments, technology-related resources and strategies for use at home. Spring Egg Hunt The 20th Annual Spring Egg Hunt at Belmont State Park will be held on Saturday, March 23rd, from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
