The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) invites you to attend its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery on Thursday, May 2nd at the Garden City Hotel. WABCTV’s Entertainment Reporter and Movie Critic Sandy Kenyon will emcee and guests will enjoy a red carpet entrance and reception at 6:30pm, followed by dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the gala event will support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention education and intervention programs for children and families. “For me, it’s more than just an event,” Richard Antonacci, Angel Ball Dinner Chair and COO and EVP of Signature Financial, LLC, explained, “we are in the midst of a public health crisis which claims the life of a young person from overdose everyday on Long Island. LICADD’s programs actively seek to alleviate the heartbreaking consequences of addiction, and without the generosity of our event participants, sponsors and auction donors, these life-saving programs wouldn’t be available.” This year’s Angel Ball honors 2013 Founder’s Award Recipient Curtis Webster, CVLE, whose leadership as a board member and past board chair, helped to shape and expand the agency’s comprehensive addiction and recovery support programs. Mr. Webster passed away in 2012, and his wife Georgina Webster and daughter Dawn Leo, will be accepting the award on his behalf. William C. Moyers, the Vice President of Public Affairs and Community Relations at the Hazelden Foundation and a bestselling author, will be honored as the 2013 Humanitarian Award Recipient. Mr. Moyers lives with his three children in St. Paul, MN,
and leads the non-profit organization’s advocacy and policy initiatives. Mr. Moyers will also serve as the Angel Ball keynote speaker and remarked “as a native of Garden City, I am looking forward to returning to Long Island for this special evening to highlight the promise of recovery over the power of addiction.” Tickets to this premier event are $500, while event and journal sponsorship opportunities are available from $200 to $25,000. Sponsors receive outstanding, prominent recognition, including their listing on LICADD’s high-traffic website, the agency’s widely distributed promotional materials, weekly e-newsletter, media presentations at the event and souvenir journal. Sponsors of the $2,000 level and greater will receive a star on our Hope for Recovery Walk of Fame- an excellent opportunity to showcase a business at the event or pay tribute to a friend or loved one. Since it was founded in 1956, LICADD has built a stellar reputation as a community leader and partner to a large network of treatment providers, faith-based organizations, school districts, and government agencies. With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD is working aggressively to help the community overcome the challenges presented by prevailing social stigma of alcoholism and drug dependence, by providing a comprehensive array of prevention, support and recovery programs. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds stated, “We are excited to mark the 57-year of providing lifesaving services to Long Islanders with our 26th Annual Angel Ball. It’s an excellent opportunity for our participants to realize the impact their dollars are having- its more than

By: Tyler Cianciulli Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one
dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,
St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

The Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,
about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess
came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

From the tear-jerking ballad I Know Where I’ve Been to the upbeat pop song You Can’t Stop The Beat, this year’s Bay Shore High School Spring musical was a colorful, enjoyable sensation. Hairspray was without a doubt one of the largest and most extravagant shows the High School has ever taken on. With over 80 cast members, 40 costumes, 10 wigs, 30 tubes of foundation and an untold number of bobby pins, the show was an amazing accomplishment. Bay Shore High School Senior Krisbel Brenes was cast in the part of Little Inez and experienced a lot of challenges throughout the show. “I had to play a younger girl so, believe it or not, it was difficult acting immature and dancing with less experience and less elegance.” Junior Kordell Hammond played the part of Seaweed, a fun loving
kid just trying to fit in during a time of strict segregation laws in the 1960’s. “This part was an easy role for me to play because I wasn’t doing anything that I wouldn’t have done had I grown up in the 1960’s. This was not only a entertaining show but it also taught an important lesson about acceptance and breaking down stereotypes.” Under the amazing direction of Chris Billella and musical direction of Christina Mendolia, HAIRSPRAY was greeted each night with thunderous applause and sold out shows on Friday and Saturday. It is sure to go down in Bay Shore High School history as one of the most exciting and uplifting shows ever performed upon our stage. Congratulations to the cast, crew and pit orchestra on a job well done.

residents. It is an honor to work with so many talented individuals who have expanded the Town of Islip’s sense of culture,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. The Town works with the Islip Arts Council, who relies on the Islip Art Committee to select each artist. Submissions are open to everyone with a submission fee of $35, or $25 if you are a member of the Islip Arts Council. Once selected, the artist will be featured at an opening ceremony. Each artist is required to list a price for anyone interested in purchasing a piece of art, or list them as “NFS,” not for sale. A companion catalog is available during each exhibit that lists titles and descriptions, prices, and background and contact information for each artist. “The Art in the Hall project is a wonderful opportunity for any artist to display their artwork. It gives the Town a unique chance to advertise these most deserving artists and increase art awareness throughout our community,” said Lynda Moran, Executive Director of the Islip Arts Council.

South Bay Shore - South Bay’s Neighbor NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday APRIL 24, 2013 • www.southbaysneighbor.com
This April marks a full year since Islip Town launched its Art In The Hall project. This project features a collection of work from selected artists. These pieces can range from photographs and screen prints, physical art such as oils or watercolors, or digital art and mixed mediums. These collections are usually between 15 and 20 pieces and each artist’s work is featured for a twomonth period. A reception is held in conjunction with each new exhibit, promoting and publicizing the works that are showcased and celebrating the efforts of each outstanding artist. The works are displayed in the corridors of Islip Town Hall for all residents and employees to admire. The Town has a display system that provides versatility to accommodate all sizes and shapes of frames. This system makes it easy to rotate art work and does not damage any piece of work or the walls they hang on. “This project helps beautify the Town’s main Town Hall building while providing exposure for up and coming artists to our

Distinguished Teacher
for what a teacher should be: prepared, creative, knowledgeable, attentive, and committed to all students equally. Mr. Nelson co-founded the High School’s Creative Writing Club and Poetry Jam, coached its Varsity Soccer team, and willingly took on the enormous challenge of Program Coordinator and Theory of Knowledge instructor when the IB Program was instituted at Bay Shore High School. A wonderful paradox, Mr. Nelson is as flexible and versatile a teacher and mentor as he is uncompromisingly ethical and integral. The model he presents to teachers and students
alike, one of honest and probing scholarship bolstered by compassion and respect, has enriched our English Department, our fledgling IB Program and 18 years’ worth of very lucky students. This year, Mr. Nelson has been awarded the Scope Award in the teaching category as well as being named the Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator for the Month of October. Currently, he is in Demark with Bay Shore High School IB students as part of an exchange program. Congratulations to Jon Nelson for earning this prestigious award.
Legislator Tom Barraga recently met with Esther Cohen and her son Jack to congratulate Esther on her 96th birthday. Esther was born in 1917, married Abraham in 1936 and moved to Long Island in 1955 with their two sons
Jack and Martin. Even after retirement both Esther and Abraham believed in living an active life. For 33 years they exercised seven mornings a week at the gym, attended several senior citizen groups and enjoyed
traveling. Abraham passed in July of 2009 at the age of 98 but Esther even after an injury at 94 returned to her active lifestyle. Happy Birthday Esther!
READING NIGHT - In March, Gardiner Manor School hosted its 4th Annual Family Reading Night. The event was filled with fun, laughter and, of course, reading. Every student was assigned a room with a Gardiner Manor teacher where they got to read a book and participate in an exciting project. At the end of the evening, everyone enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and cookies.

Councilman Flotteron. “The program is growing by leaps and bounds, and we are proud to be part of their efforts.” Participation in the program has increased every year since its inception, and will soon be expanding its outreach into the autistic community. Students from Stony Brook University and the Touro College of Health Sciences help mentor the students by bringing them out of the course and steering them toward a better future. “Sports and Fitness opportunities for typical children are plentiful in the Islip Community. Parents of typical children have access to some of the best sports camps and programs in the country. However, children with special needs or exceptional children have limited access to such programs,” said Alex Lopez, of Par F.O.R.E.
“Exceptional children are often deprived of opportunities to use their bodies in a manner that would actually help them socially, academically, and developmentally. The program I have developed is looking to level the playing field for exceptional children.”

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron is pleased to announce that the Par F.O.R.E. program for atrisk youth will once again be available to Islip’s children. The Par F.O.R.E. project (Fellowship, Opportunity, Resilience, and Empowerment) provides golf instruction to at-risk youth within our Town, specifically in the Brentwood, Central Islip, West Islip, and Bay Shore areas. The goal of the program is to expose the participants to an environment free of gang and drug culture. Now entering its seventh year, the Par F.O.R.E. program enjoys discounts at the Brentwood Country Club and Gull Haven Golf Course. “There are many members of our community with reason to be grateful for the Par F.O.R.E. program,” said

Creative Expressions Hanging By A Thread The Gallery
Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!
By: John Tabacco, Stony Brook
We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead - some believe there’s something better So we go on and play our games Fill the closet with campaigns of pointless dogma and refrains that laugh at us each time the closet opens But we can take a pill for that

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead, some believe there’s something better So we go on and make our plans in the scheme of things and then we tend to worry about the future till it’s over And all that wasted time was spent for something we could not prevent But pretty soon they will invent a pill for that Doesn’t really matter when you take a vow to live your life and see it through The nature of the universe is moving onward within and without you This I’m told is truth
We’re all hanging by a thread and pretty soon our lives are over But does that mean it’s the end?

My Little Darling By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My little darling No one has ever loved me So innocently So purely Your words have a way To make me feel complete and at peace You have my heart for all eternity When you wrap your arms around my soul I feel your love like none I’ve known It helps me to not fear growing old I just want to be with you As we explore life You are my love You are my life

On April 11th, Bay Shore School District hosted its 19th Annual Community Summit, After Sandy, in the High School auditorium. This year, important questions about the impact of superstorm Sandy were asked and answered in real time. Panelists included Ocean Beach Mayor James Mallot, Senator Phil Boyle, Suffolk Executive Steve Bellone, Suffolk Country Treasurer Angie Carpenter, Town of Islip Councilman Steven Flotteron, Director of Sustainability Dorian Dale, Susan Barbash of Protect Long Island and Frank Santomauro, a representative from the Army Corps of Engineers. Three free generators and an enormous flower bouquet were raffled off thanks to J.C.
