n March 21st, 51 of Mr. Pasca’s 12th grade Bay Shore High School Mythology students took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. They spent four hours exploring the museum, completing both a scavenger hunt of Myth-related sculptures, statues, paintings, musical instruments and armor and a sketch of one inspiring, favorite item. Ethnic Pen Conference a make-or-break tool of the 21st Century. Next, poet Derrick Brown read visceral, engaging, takeno-prisoners spoken word poetry.

Lastly, Shadrack Boakye, CEO of the Truth Urban Theatre Group, told the inspiring story of how he escaped his war-stricken homeland Liberia, learned how to read later than his American classmates, and persevered to become

an accomplished debate champion, public speaker, writer, playwright, and performer.

Every year, this nationally recognized conference draws over 900 attendees, including 500 students from Bay Shore High School, 30 from Bay Shore Middle School, and students and teachers from schools across Long Island, all of whom enjoy the keynote

sessions and participate in two writing workshops led by accomplished/published Bay Shore teachers or other writers of merit.

One of Ethnic Pen’s organizers, High School English teacher Mrs. Joanne Mayo, said of the event, “Bay Shore students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to be inspired by such successful authors.

Also, seeing some of their own teachers grow into

published authors makes the possibility of becoming an author themselves one day a real possibility.”

M&M GRANT - Recently, the Bay Shore Middle School Mentor and Mentee Program (M&M) received a $750 grant from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI). This grant was awarded to programs that took active steps the previous year towards improving the quality of their mentoring programs. Franca Floro, Director of Programs and Training for MPLI, recently visited the Middle School and met with some of the program’s mentors to offer guidance and suggestions. You’ve walked into a movie theatre or arena of some sort – one with “No Outside Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right?

It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips?

Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed.

Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile

of snacks, clearly. After all, we were in this for the long haul.

For the most part, we timed our mini-meals for the short breaks we were allotted between films. But when those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me.

Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought.

Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer.

No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the

avalanche of liquid out.

Great. Now I had a saturated pocketbook, soaked belongings – and no soda. I gathered everything in my arms and walked down the hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight.

About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in.

All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it.

My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone.

Go figure.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Nelson co-founded the High School’s Creative Writing Club and Poetry Jam, coached the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team, and willingly took on the enormous challenge of launching and administering the IB Program as the IB Program Coordinator and Theory of Knowledge instructor when the program was instituted at Bay Shore High School. A wonderful paradox, Mr. Nelson is as flexible and versatile a teacher and mentor as he is a person of integrity and

uncompromising ethics.

The model he presents to teachers and students alike, one of honest and probing scholarship bolstered by compassion and respect, has enriched our English Department, our fledgling IB Program and 18 years’ worth of very lucky students.

This year, Mr. Nelson has also received the Scope Award for commitment to excellence in the teaching category as well as being named the Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator for the Month of October.

Recently, he traveled to Demark with twenty-nine Bay Shore High School IB diploma students as part of the first IB international school exchange program.

Congratulations to Jon Nelson on his welldeserved recognition as a Harvard Club of Long Island Distinguished Teacher.

On April 7th, Bay Shore Wellness Alliance, Good Samaritan Hospital and the Bay Shore Schools teamed up to sponsor Bay Shore’s 3rd Annual Bunny Hop Walk.

Over 150 participants showed up to walk the mile long Main Street trail, with the children stopping to collect prizefilled eggs, provided by Good Samaritan Hospital, along the way. At the end of the walk, kids posed for

pictures with the Easter Bunny (Marilyn Mott in the Bay Shore Wellness Alliance sponsored Bunny Hop Suit).

The Crisis Center, the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline, is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in its upcoming Counselor Assistant Training Program. No experience is necessary and the hours are flexible (around-theclock) to accommodate

the individual needs of volunteers.

The free, comprehensive orientation training program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in Bellmore. May’s training will be held on 3 successive Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. on May 9th, 16th and 23rd. June’s training will be held on 3 successive Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
