Nursing Dean Honored By VIBS
Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, has received the Community Service Award from the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County (VIBS) in recognition of her efforts to establish the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Center
at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH). Dr. Xippolitos received the award “for her role in establishing a SANE Center at Stony Brook University and for partnering with VIBS to establish a training program for forensic nurse examiners,” said Pamela Johnston, Executive Director of
VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center. “These specially trained nurses provide compassionate healthcare to traumatized survivors, while collecting evidence that will be crucial for police investigation and the DA’s prosecution.” “To be honored by VIBS is quite thrilling,” Dr. Xippolitos said in accepting the award during a March 7th ceremony in St. James. “The people that VIBS touches are people in need. Those who work at VIBS are pioneers in the field of intimate violence, and their services bring hope to thousands of individuals, adults and children on Long Island.” A long-time volunteer with VIBS, Dr. Xippolitos helped establish the SANE Center at SBUH in 2009. The center is a collaborative effort among VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis
Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital, the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Staffed by Registered Nurses with advanced education and critical preparation in the forensic examination of sexual assault victims, the center provides comprehensive evidence collection for more effective investigations and better prosecutions, while preserving the victim’s dignity and reducing psychological trauma. Last year, Stony Brook’s SANE Center saw 121 victims in the hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr. Xippolitos said. “Our School of Nursing continues to work closely with VIBS educational outreach programs,” Dr. Xippolitos said. In particular, she cited the work of Marie Ann Marino,
EdD, RN, PNP, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a certified forensic nurse, who educates Stony Brook nurses who aspire to become SANE nurses. SANE nurses are on call 24 hours a day to meet the needs of victims who are brought into any of Suffolk County’s three SANE centers, located at Stony Brook, Good Samaritan Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center. The SANE program has operated in Suffolk County since 1999. “The work that these nurses do honors the victim’s right to make choices about medical and emotional care, as well as legal prosecution,” Dr. Xippolitos said. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Xippolitos received her AS degree in Nursing from Farmingdale College. She received her bachelor of science and master of science
in nursing degrees from Stony Brook University School of Nursing, and she completed her PhD in Nursing at Adelphi University. As Dean of the School of Nursing, she is responsible for more than 1,000 student nurses. Dr. Xippolitos is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric nursing. She is certified as a Nurse Administrator through the American Nurses Credentialing Board and is a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and New York Organization of Nurse Executives, serving on AONE’s International Committee. She is a charter member and past president of Kappa Gamma Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, International, the international honor society for nursing.

Stop World Hunger, Inc. is pleased to announce its schedule of tennis events for the 2013 season. This year marks the 33rd year of Stop World Hunger’s charity tennis events for famine relief. All funds are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest.” Currently, the World Food Programme estimates that 2.6 million children die annually of hunger-related causes. When it comes to starving children, the only acceptable number is zero. First up for the 2013 is the Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Party. Scheduled for Saturday evening, March 23rd, it takes place at Carefree Raquet Club in North Merrick. The tennis party lasts from 8 p.m. to midnight. Players are guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and plenty of refreshments. The cost is $15 for players and $7.50 for non-players. Next up is the annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Divisions are established
based upon the ability levels of the registrants: intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.54.0), and advanced (4.04.5+). Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between April 6th and June
16th. Awards will be presented at a special June 22nd Tennis Party. The registration deadline is Friday, March 29th. Events for the Summer and Fall will be announced later in the year. For more information, contact Matt at 631.789.3618.

at the University of Rochester. A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a “consummate teacher” who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962. Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize. Thomas Curtin is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He has a Masters of Arts

Germany, Amsterdam, England, Canada and recently Australia as onethird of the cultural arts exchange project “Global Poetics.” Her journalism work has been published in magazines Uptown, KING, XXL, The Source, Canada’s The Word and UK’s MOBO. Her poetry has been published in the literary journals Pluck, Literary Bohemian, Bestiary Brown Girl Love, Muzzle and Up The Staircase. She is an Urban Word NYC mentor, as seen on HBO’s Brave New Voices and facilitates performance poetry and writing workshops throughout the country. She is the publisher of Penmanship Books, a small press for performance artists and owns PoetCD. Com, an on-line marketing and distribution company for poets. She is also the Nuyorican Poets Café Poetry Program Director and curator of their famous Friday Night Slam. Poetry for the HART is a Public Art Initiative project developed by the Town’s Public Art Advisory Committee in conjunction with Teenspeak, Co-Lead Agency, who suggested the project to the Town. Teens in the community from ages 14-18 were invited last fall to submit poems for consideration in the program. This spring a selection panel comprised of poets Robert J. Savino (West Islip), Paula Camacho (Farmingdale) and Gladys
Henderson (Nesconset), as well as Public Art Advisory Committee member Deborah Robbins (Huntington Station), reviewed the 293 different submissions from 261 different teen poets and narrowed the choices to the winning poems. Additional partners in this project included Heckscher Museum of Art; Huntington Arts Council; The Long Islander, which has pledged to publish the winning poems; REACH CYA; Town of Huntington Youth Bureau; TriCommunity Youth Agency; the award reception host – Walt Whitman Birthplace Association; and Youth Directions & Alternatives CYA, as well as numerous area teachers who actively encouraged their students’ participation. Subsequent to the ceremonies, colorful placards, each bearing a winning poem, will be placed in the interior advertising spaces on buses throughout the HART system. The names of the winning teen poets and text of their winning poems will be available following the April 24th event. For further information on Poetry for the HART or other Town of Huntington Public Art Initiative projects, contact John Coraor, Director of Cultural Affairs, at 631.351.3099 or via e-mail: jcoraor@HuntingtonNY. gov.
Huntington Arts Council invites you to attend Living Color, a new exhibit featuring the work of four extraordinary artists. According to curator William Grabowski, each artist selected focuses on the unique and varied ways that Color lives in our lives. “Living Color” features artists Mary Ahern, Anne B. Gunthner, Stan Mehlman, and Ray Rothaug. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 5th from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Art-Trium, 25 Melville Park Road, Melville, NY 11747. During the reception, there will be a music performance by Sally Shorrock and Friends. About the artists: • Mary Ahern: Ms. Ahern is an extremely accomplished artist who uses virtually all media to uniquely capture her subjects. Be it traditional or digital, Mary chooses a
medium and finds Nature’s most alluring subjects – beautifully presenting them for us to appreciate and marvel at. • Anne B. Gunthner: Ms. Gunthner uses her wonderful painting techniques to capture and record the beauty that surrounds her life. Her work reflects her sense of devotion to the traditional Masters as she masterfully brings her landscapes, still-lives and portraits to life with lush color and broad strokes. The beauty and soul of her subjects are then opened for us all to see. • Stan Mehlman: Mr. Mehlman is a consummate photographer, who has traveled the world, as well as keenly observed in his own environment. He captures images that both move us emotionally and sparkle with color. Stan focuses on what lives

On Wednesday, April 24th the Huntington Town Board will recognize teen poets from the community selected for participation in the Town’s Poetry for the HART Public Art Initiative. The event will begin at 7 p.m. at the Walt Whitman Birthplace (246 Old Walt Whitman Rd., West Hills). The winning teen poets will receive certificates in an award ceremony with members of the Huntington Town Board. Immediately following conclusion of the award ceremony there will be a poetry reading led by adult poet mentor Mahogany L. Browne at which each of the teen poets selected for the program will read their winning poems. After the reading there will be a brief reception honoring the teen poets. The award ceremony, reading, and reception are free and open to the public. Browne – a Fellow of The Poets House and Cave Canem – is the author of several books, including Swag and #Dear Twitter: Love Letters Hashed Out On-line. Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no
shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit
the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

“Our awards recognize people who transform the future,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, a board member of the Long Island Harvard Club. “Dedicated teachers like Ms. Davidson expend unfathomable amounts of time and energy on our Long Island teens, day after day and year after year. Their efforts inspire students to dream dreams, to work to accomplish those dreams, and to think rigorously about what they want their future to be.” One of a dozen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award — from across the 120 school districts on Long Island — Ms. Davidson will be honored at the Harvard Club’s annual University Relations Lunch on April 7th. Following the award ceremony, Harvard professor Dr. Maria Tatar will give a short lecture on “Mythical and Magical: The Resurgence of Fairy Tales in Popular Culture.” Renowned for her many books and articles which have elevated the study of fairy tales and folklore into a mainstream academic pursuit, Dr. Tatar chairs the Program in Folklore and Mythology at Harvard University and holds an endowed chair as the John L. Loeb Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Ms. Davidson, who has taught 28 years in the Half Hollow Hills district, teaches AP Chemistry and Science Research at HHH High School West. Having majored in biology/chemistry as an undergraduate, she continued at Hofstra University to earn a graduate degree in education. A lifelong learner, she brings insight from her more recent coursework into her classroom, for example, a University of Wisconsin course on Nanotechnology. Recognized for her superb teaching, she received the 2009 Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Joseph B. Whitehead Educator of Distinction Award. Besides working with students outside of class, Ms. Davidson serves as Club Advisor for both Science Explorers and Mock Trial. When asked about writing recommendations, she noted that she has written many hundreds of letters recommending Half Hollow Hill students to colleges, summer programs, and scholarships, and more than fifty in support of applicants to Harvard College. An avid — and year-round — kayaker, Ms. Davidson enjoys watching seals from her kayak in the winter and enjoys the challenge of stand-up paddling. She loves ballroom dancing, practicing as often as possible, as well
Distinguished Teacher as the challenge of trying new recipes, knitting, book club discussions, and contributing effort on behalf of the Coalition on Child Abuse and Neglect/The Safe Center LI. Nominated by Levent Alpoge, a former student who is currently a junior at Harvard College, remembers her teaching as “what an incredibly taught class!” Although Mr. Alpoge describes himself as a somewhat reluctant student of chemistry, with very little interest in
“either calculating nonsensical things like the number of centimetres in a foot or doing lab experiments,” he describes Ms. Davidson’s approach as transformative: “She captured my interest and got quite a few other people excited enough about chemistry that they planned on pursuing it in college.” “I have no idea what constitutes an ideal teaching style,” Mr. Alpoge concluded, “but it is absolutely clear that whatever voodoo she brings to her teaching should be packaged and spread across the country.” At the April 7th ceremony, the HCLI will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2013 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, MA. Past winners of this scholarship have enjoyed a customized visit focused
on subject matter they love, enhancing their teaching by sampling some of the wealth of resources available to Harvard students — meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, specialty museums; enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. “These teachers inspire excellence — nurturing our Long Island students both to thrive at rigorous universities and to recognize their obligation to nurture others” added Susan Novick, President of the Harvard Club. “We are proud to honor them.” When Superintendent of Schools Kelly Fallon learned of this award, she commented, “The entire Half Hollow Hills community is extremely proud of Ms. Davidson.” “Having our former students take the time to acknowledge an educator who they feel enhanced their overall learning experience and contributed to their success,” Superintendent Fallon continued, “is the greatest compliment, not only to the teacher, but to the district, too.” Charles Bartolotta, who teaches physics, and retired math teacher Alan Blayne were commended this year on their superb teaching. In prior years, Half Hollow Hills award winners included computer science teacher Matthew Maroney, government teacher Scott Edwards, and research advisor Chrysi Notskas. “Over the past twenty years, Harvard has accepted students from more than two-thirds of the approximately 120 school districts on Long Island,” said Carolyn Hughes, who chairs the HCLI Schools & Scholarships Committee, which ensures every Long Island applicant to Harvard gets a personal alumni interview. “In the past five years, Harvard has accepted students from more than half of these districts, offering admission without regard for financial need. Harvard’s generous financial aid program, which provides financial aid for families making up to $180,000, has helped keep it affordable. Because of this reach, we decided to have current Harvard undergraduates nominate the Long Island teachers who had the greatest effect on their lives and the lives of their fellow students.” The Harvard Club of Long Island website is www.harvardclubli.com.
Research & Exploration Under the direction of adviser Drew Lockwood, members of the Oldfield Middle School Science Research Club, or SRC, in the Harborfields Central School District recently hosted students from the district’s Washington Drive Primary School. SRC members demonstrated for the younger students the construction and programming of a robot that uses an ultrasonic sensor to find its way through a maze, also constructed by the middle schoolers. Through the
Science Research Club, students are trained in basic engineering principles and use robots to solve problems creatively. In return, the Washington Drive students demonstrated for the SRC members their entry in the FIRST Lego League National Competition. The young students have been working on a demonstration entry that mechanically illustrates the change in the nation’s banking industry over the years. “This was a terrific collaboration of robotic
technology shared between students of different age levels,” commented Mr. Lockwood. “We are fortunate to have programs like this at Harborfields and district parents who are dedicated to supporting our students’ exploration of such topics. This summer, the Harborfields Alumni and Community Educational Foundation is offering robotics camps that will provide even more opportunities for our students to learn about robotics.”

Beloved Books Find New Home
Residents of the Knolls of Melville, a housing development for senior citizens aged 62 and over, will be able to get lost in a “new” good book courtesy of local residents who generously donated their gently used tomes during a Book Drive sponsored by Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro. Legislator D’Amaro hand-delivered the books to Knolls’ resident Betty Ann Widmann, who
coordinates the library for the 200-plus unit community. He was also welcomed by Community President Carmine Rosato and Treasurer Carol Herlihy. From biographies to science fiction to classic literary works, dozens of books were generously dropped off at Legislator D’Amaro’s office during the recent drive, held in conjunction with National “I Love to Read” Month in
February. Now those books have found a new home at the Knolls where they can be enjoyed by book lovers and casual readers alike. “I would like to thank our generous neighbors who donated their books during the recent book drive,” Legislator D’Amaro said. “I am so pleased that these books have found a new home at the Knolls and will be enjoyed by many for years to come.”

County Champions
Is there a first-place trophy in their future? Stay tuned. That’s how we left off a couple of months ago when we visited with Whitman’s Mathletes. But after a seesaw season of competitions that had our team neck and neck with Suffolk’s other perennial powerhouses, Ward Melville and Commack, our Whitman Mathletes have emerged as the new Suffolk County champions. In their last competition of the season, Whitman scored a 28 out of 30 to take sole possession of first place and the Suffolk County championship. “We went into the last competition trailing Ward Melville by 1 point and ended the season 2 points ahead of them,” said Mr. Malaury Samedy, Whitman’s Mathletes advisor. “While we have a pretty young team, consisting mostly of tenth graders,
everyone contributed to our success this year,” continued Mr. Samedy. “Whitman’s seniors did really well, including Chan Kang, Sean Conlon, Andy Yoon, Sophie Podhurst and Eric Schmidt, who all had good seasons. Chan missed a perfect scoring season by 1 point. SophomoreZarmeen Mussa had a particularly good year, scoring a perfect 6 out of 6 in her last competition. Juniors also held their own, with John Spessard and Thomas Hustedtadding to the team’s success with consistent scores. The team in general got off to a slow start but really came on strong for the balance of the season. It was 2 years ago that we ended the season tied with Commack as county champions, and last year the team was second in the county, so this is a fitting end to this season, and it was a collective effort as
we climbed our way to the top.” The team and Mr. Samedy would especially like to thank Math Chairperson Mr. David Gunder for his support, including nutritional support in the way of delicious snacks provided throughout the year. Suffolk County Mathlete teams will enjoy an awards dinner later in the spring, when Whitman will bring home their well-deserved trophy. Congratulations, Mathletes!

The Harborfields Central School District is pleased to announce the selection of 45 student-musicians in grades 5-10 to the 2013 Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County music ensembles. Selection to All-County band, chorus and orchestra is the highest honor a student of music in this age group can attain. Annually throughout Suffolk County, school music teachers nominate 5,000 students for SCMEA participation. Of that sum, several hundred students are ultimately selected for each divisional music festival.

Volley For A Cause Over 300 students of Elwood-John H. Glenn High School gathered on Friday, March 1st for the school’s annual Volleyball-a-thon. The event represents one of the largest high school fundraisers of the year. Hundreds of students and faculty participated in the cause to benefit Island Harvest and Elwood’s Relay for Life. Each student contributed $8 to participate in the Volleyball-a-thon. Student
teams creatively named themselves, dressed in matching T-shirts and took to the courts. Local businesses and parent donations provided food for the student-athletes throughout the night. Cleverly named teams battled against one another on the volleyball court for the ultimate bragging rights of Volleyball-a-thon champs. In the end, the team who walked away with the title
was JG Senior Probs, but the true champions were the students who came together and raised a total of $3,634 for the causes determined by the student council members. The Elwood School District thanks all who participated and donated to this wonderful event and extends a special thank-you to team Pick You Up, who raised the most money for VOLLEY FOR A CAUSE - Elwood-John H. Glenn High School Volleyball-a-thon the cause, as well as event champions JG Senior Probs (left to right) Jessica Brighton, Stephanie Caputo, Mike coordinator Therese Regan. Tufano, Nick LaLota and Kenny Massa.

Students of Washington Drive Primary and Thomas J. Lahey Elementary schools in the Harborfields Central School District enthusiastically kicked off the Walk for a Wish fundraising drive. Walk for a Wish is an annual Harborfields event that benefits the Make-AWish Foundation. For the sixth consecutive year, participants of the event are invited to raise donations and walk around the track at Harborfields High School. This year’s Walk for a Wish will be held on Saturday, April 13th, at 9 a.m. All of the donations collected for the walk will be used to grant the wish of Talia, a child from neighboring Northport who struggles with a
serious illness. MakeA-Wish Foundation volunteers John DeTurris and Jim Byrne told students that their collected efforts will allow Talia and her family to go to Disney World, something young Talia has always wanted to do. Since the inception of the event, the Harborfields community has raised over $60,000 for the Make-AWish Foundation, in turn providing children with such wishes as a trip to the Super Bowl, a Disney cruise, a drum kit and the opportunity to meet their favorite athletes. During the kickoff assembly, students explored a variety of ways to raise money for the cause. They also decorated the school hallways
with posters designed to encourage participation. This year’s event was cocoordinated by teachers Diane Brown, Emily Gutheil and Kathleen Taylor, with support from the Acts of Kindness Committee at WDPS and the Walk for a Wish Committee at TJL, as well as the WDPS and TJL PTAs. If you are interested in contributing to the Walk for a Wish drive, please send donations to: WDPS Acts of Kindness Committee, c/o Washington Drive Primary School, 95 Washington Drive, Centerport, NY 11721 or TJL Walk for a Wish Committee, c/o Thomas J. Lahey Elementary School, 625 Pulaski Road, Greenlawn, NY 11740.
The Arbor Day Foundation is making it easier for everyone to celebrate the arrival of spring through planting trees. Join the Arbor Day Foundation in March 2013 and receive 10 free white flowering dogwood trees. “White flowering dogwoods will add beauty to your home throughout the year,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Dogwoods are known for their showy spring flowers, scarlet autumn foliage and red berries that attract songbirds during winter. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation’s Trees for America campaign. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between
March 1st and May 31st, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6 to 12inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. Arbor Day Foundation members also receive a subscription to Arbor Day, the Foundation’s bimonthly publication, and The Tree Book, which contains
information about tree planting and care. To become a member of the Foundation and receive the free trees, send a $10 contribution to Ten Free Dogwood Trees, Arbor Day Foundation, 100 Arbor Avenue, Nebraska City, NE 68410, by March 30th, or join online at arborday.org. march.

SoUTH BAY SUCCESS SToRY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.
