of leaders worked with the future generation of leaders,” said Dr. Nathalia Rogers, cochair of the Long Island Youth Summit Steering Committee and director of the American Communities Institute at Dowling College. “The purpose of the Summit is to work with the brightest high school students to further their analytical and leadership abilities for the benefit of Long Island’s future. Our Summit partners, which include high school teachers from many public schools and organizations such as the North ShoreLIJ Health System, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Vision Long Island and others, worked hard to make this program a success.” This year’s Summit started with a keynote address by Donald Monti, president and CEO of Renaissance Downtowns. Mr. Monti spoke to students about the importance of becoming leaders and being active in building the social and economic future for Long Island through investment in Smart Growth-type planning, as well as building communities that will allow for economic growth and environmental preservation. This year’s Summit featured nine topical workshops that covered environmental, sociomedical and community issues.

Mr. Haynes noted, “All of the chefs served up inventive meals today. It’s fun to have a day like this with some friendly competition that also shows off our quality work throughout the health system.” During last year’s competition, Syosset Hospital took third place. All of the dishes had to be no more than 500 calories, 15 grams of fat and 600 milligrams of sodium; health system registered dieticians evaluated these recipes. “People may not realize this but our patients often enjoy the food we prepare at our facilities and rank it alongside that of restaurants,” said Michael Kiley, director of nutrition and food services at Glen Cove Hospital and chair of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s chef committee. He also organized the cooking competition. “Events such as this show that our staff can prepare diverse, tasty and nutritious meals for our patients to savor when they come to our facilities.”

Lenox Hill chefs Patricia Sobol and Johnny Beniquez were in third place with their shrimp dish that had a tomato saffron broth and a parsnip and celery root puree; chefs from Lenox Hill were in second place last year. Chefs from 13 of North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals and facilities diced, sautéed and blanched at Glen Cove Hospital’s Pratt Auditorium during the competition to create tasty, appealing and healthful dishes. The competition, which was held during National Nutrition Month, helps to show that hospital food can not only be healthful but it also surpasses the stereotypes of being bland and boring. During the competition, chefs had access to a pantry, stove top burners and a farmers’ market. Each team was given 45 minutes to make a nutritious and delicious meal that was rated by three judges -- Adrian

Family Service League (FSL) was awarded an additional grant of $80,000 by the Robin Hood Foundation to cover direct relief expenses to individuals and families impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Family Service League had previously received a $200,000 grant from Robin Hood, which was partially allocated to direct relief. The need was so great that the allocation was soon expended. “Many Suffolk County residents are still struggling after the storm,” said Karen Boorshtein, LCSW, FSL’s President and CEO. “Robin Hood’s support is allowing FSL to continue to provide direct disaster relief to Suffolk County’s most vulnerable residents.” With Robin Hood’s grant, Family Service League will cover direct relief losses not covered by insurance or FEMA, including repairs and replacement of essentials.

The seminars are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about communicating with an individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. Suffolk Zone 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 27, 2013

Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first responders and firefighters but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a firefighter and the

relationships with the ASD community. “As a parent of a child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand its scope to include anyone who might interact with individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder

Both will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Dorval, a certified public fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build

Of Spring & weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

The ecstatic team also placed in the quarterfinals of the tournament, ultimately losing to the alliance that went on to place second in the event. “Being able to go onto the field before thousands of people and prove that as a third-year team we could be so successful was truly one of the greatest feelings,” said Abhijith Kudaravalli of Dix Hills, team president and senior at HHH HS West. The competition required high school teams to build a robot that could climb a three-tier tower and/or shoot Frisbee-like discs into a target from the ground. The 2013 FIRST Robotics challenge, called “Ultimate Ascent,” was announced via NASA satellite broadcast nationwide on January 5th, and teams had just over six weeks to construct their machine before locking it away until competition. Students from the district’s combined HS East and West team worked five nights a week and Saturdays, eating meals at school Fridays and Saturdays so they could keep working until the deadline at midnight February 19th. In Virginia, HHH’s robot was the only robot of

Supporters Turn Out Rain mixed with snow that signaled the early stages of a nor’easter failed to dissuade 200 guests from attending The Friends of Mercy Medical Center’s 47th Annual Gentlemen’s St. Patrick’s Dinner. Returning to a familiar venue at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club, the March 7th black-tie event honored State Senator Dean G. Skelos, Republican Conference Leader, Temporary President and coLeader of the State Senate’s historic majority governing coalition.

Dr. Alan Guerci, Mercy’s president and CEO, was presented with a check for $170,000 representing the proceeds of The Friends’ 2012 fund-raising efforts which were pledged to support the hospital’s Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the only facility on the south shore of Nassau County designated by New York State as being staffed and equipped to provide specialized complex care to all premature and sick newborns. The event was chaired by Andrew E. Healey of

Rockville Centre, a longtime member and past president of The Friends, and was sponsored by Neurological Surgery, PC the largest private neurosurgery practice on Long Island. “The St. Patrick’s Dinner is one of the most significant fund-raisers for the Medical Center,” noted Friends President Dr. Marc DiSciullo of Muttontown, “And we are deeply grateful to our sponsor and attendees and to those who did not attend but supported the event nonetheless.”

and administrators who recognize the vital role that music learning plays in student achievement. According to NAMM Foundation Executive Director Mary Luehrsen, the Best Communities for Music Education program is the bellwether of rising endorsement for this vital cause. “There is overwhelming research tying music education to higher overall student success in school and in life,” she said. “This designation recognizes communities for their commitment to music education and strengthens support for these programs. Having widely embraced the evidence indicating that music education yields great things in schools and communities, people are increasingly affirmative, advocating for school music curricula, and championing programs like Best Communities that recognize this commitment to music education.” Now in its 14th year, the BCME program requires each school and district to detail funding, staffing, commitment to standards, and access to music instruction. Responses are meticulously reviewed by researchers at The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service of Lawrence, Kansas (an affiliate of the University of Kansas) and the NAMM Foundation to calculate the designated districts and awarded schools. The BCME program is a significant tool in the NAMM Foundation’s advocacy efforts on behalf of school-based music

education. Numerous studies have demonstrated that learning to play music can boost student achievement and contributes to a school and district’s goals for success for all students. Also, a school music program is an instructional bargain; a NAMM-funded Cost of Music Education study found that a comprehensive K-through-12 music education program costs an average of only $187 per student per year. “The designation reveals the elements of music programs so educators, administrators, teachers and students can see what they have, what they need, what they have accomplished, and what work needs to be done to strengthen their music education now and for the future,” Luehrsen said. The award winning Half Hollow Hills Central School District of Babylon and Huntington provides educational services for students in grades Kindergarten through 12 and prides itself on being a Triple A District - achieving excellence in Academics, Athletics and the Arts.

Suffolk Zone 1 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 27, 2013

For the third consecutive year, the Half Hollow Hills Central School District was named A Best Community for Music Education by The NAMM Foundation for its 14th annual Best Communities for Music Education (BCME) survey. The Survey Competition acknowledges schools and districts across the U.S. for their commitment and support for music education as part of the core curriculum. “In my ten tears at Half Hollow Hills, I have never been more proud of the performances and accomplishments of our music students and dedication and hard work of our music staff”, commented Sal Randazzo, HHH Director of Fine Arts. “Having received the NAMM award for the third year in a row, I am truly gratified that the district is being recognized on the national level for all our achievements. It is an honor to be at the helm of such an impressive department in such a supportive community.” The Best Communities designation recognizes collaborative, from-theground-up efforts of teachers, administrators, students and parents who continually work to keep comprehensive music education as an integral part of the core curriculum. This year, nearly 2000 schools and school districts participated in the survey an increase of 366% from 2012, resulting in a record number of designations. This year’s increase in survey participation is an indication of growing support from both parents

Suffolk County was chosen as a pilot County because of its large and diverse veteran population coupled with its reputation for delivering quality services to veterans. The Peer to Peer program currently holds seven weekly group meetings throughout Suffolk County with more than 78 veterans actively participating in the program. The meetings operate with an acceptance of anonymity to ensure full participation by the military community. The program has received full support from Suffolk County Veterans Service groups and the Northport VA Medical Center who also refers veterans to the program.

Hear about LIHSA’s outstanding programs, from its half- and full-day high school studies to its Summer Arts Academy. LIHSA students

receive professional-level training in art, dance, theatre, technical theatre, instrumental or vocal music, film, playwriting or Digital Media Production each day as a supplement to their regular courses of study. The school’s alumni have landed starring roles on Broadway and in national touring companies. They also can be found working as technicians for Cirque
