The 43rd Anniversary of Earth Day will be celebrated at the Heckscher Spring Festival on Saturday, April 27th and Sunday, April 28th at Heckscher State Park in East Islip.

Cup is a new competition this spring. 167 excellent teams in each ENYYSA league who are not Premier League teams are playing in this competition.

The finals of both the State Open Cup and ENY Upper 90 Cup are scheduled for Saturday, June 1st and Sunday, June 2nd at Stringham Park in LaGrange.

The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is pleased to announce that the State Cup will kick off this spring on the weekend of April 6th and 7th. 711 teams from the East End of Long Island to north of Albany have entered the State Cup and are vying to become state champions.

“We are looking forward to wonderful competition, hopefully to be played in abundant sunshine this spring,” commented State Cup Chairperson Barbara Rodriguez, an ENYYSA Hall of Famer.

As the name implies, the State Open Cup (US Youth Soccer / ENY State Championship) is open to all teams. 283 squads will be playing in this competition primarily for Premier, Division 1 and Division 2 teams.

Only State Open Cup champs go on to play in the Regionals with those winners going to the Nationals in the National Championship Series.

How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them?

And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of.

Personally, I will never discard my CD collection.

In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate

my massive music collection.

Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together.

I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really.

I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real

purpose – but they’re mine.

They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb.

Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes.

As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

“Personally, the children I have worked with have truly inspired me to wake up every morning with a purpose,” he said. “Simply seeing the courage and determination they possess on a daily basis has instilled me with a passion to make use of my talents for the goodness of others.

“I enjoy creating something and then seeing the impact,” Naeem added.

“It just makes me happy.

That’s all it really is.”

A non-profit organization based in New York, Project Sunshine has more than 10,000 volunteers serving in 150 major cities across the United States, as well as Canada, China, Israel, Kenya and Puerto Rico. The organization offers recreational (arts), educational (tutoring and mentoring) and social services (HIV and nutritional counseling) to more than 60,000 children facing medical challenges.

“Our volunteers are students, working professionals, artists, athletes and people of all ages and backgrounds who want to bring sunshine into the lives of children in

need,” said Kate Amanna, MPA, Program Manager for Project Sunshine.

“Volunteers spend time with children, create gifts to send to hospitalized children, and participate in hospital improvement projects to brighten the hospital’s surroundings.”

“This is a tremendous service to our patients and it demonstrates great care and commitment by the Stony Brook students who participate,” said Margaret M. McGovern, MD, PhD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Pediatrics, Stony Brook University School of Medicine, and Physician-in-Chief, Stony Brook Children’s.

On a recent visit during Child Life Month in March, the Stony Brook students were filmed as part of a video production

by Project Sunshine to promote its spring benefit gala on May 2 and to help raise awareness about the organization. The students wore bright yellow Project Sunshine shirts and donned chef’s hats while helping children create yogurt parfaits at the “Chef’s Table.” The activity provided the opportunity to educate the children about nutritional facts, recipes and healthier eating habits.

“We feel very fortunate to have Project Sunshine on our team to help make the children’s hospital stays less stressful,” Walter said. “They truly bring rays of sunshine to our children and their families.”

North Shore-LIJ Huntington Hospital recently recognized March Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month with its first ever Go Blue Day on Friday, March 15th.

As part of the day-long spirited event, hospital staff wore blue in support of colorectal cancer awareness and provided patients with valuable information regarding early detection screenings and various treatment options that are available today.

Everyone who participated was treated to free ice cream at the hospital’s café, which was packaged in blue to commemorate the day.

H u n t i n g t o n Hospital’s “Go Blue Day” was introduced and spearheaded by Huntington Hospital’s newly appointed Director of Surgical Services and Director of colorectal Surgery David E. Rivadeneira, MD, FACS, FASCRS, an accomplished colorectal surgeon with board-certification in general surgery as well as colon and rectal surgery.

“Statistics show that colon and rectal cancers are now the second most common diagnosed cancer in men and women in the United States today,” said Dr. Rivadeneira. “While our ‘Go Blue Day’ focused on drawing more attention toward the prevalence and seriousness of colorectal cancers, it also celebrated the new hope for more remissions and cures with quicker recovery thanks to today’s colorectal cancer screenings and minimally invasive colorectal procedures including laparoscopic and robotic surgical procedures.”

Mohammed Naeem could easily be known as Mr. Sunshine. As Leader of the Stony Brook University chapter of Project Sunshine, that’s his mission: to bring sunshine into the lives of children who are hospitalized at Stony Brook Long Island Children’s Hospital.

A senior majoring in health science with a concentration in public health at Stony Brook, Naeem and his fellow student members of the local Project Sunshine chapter visit the pediatric inpatient unit at Stony Brook Children’s each Wednesday afternoon, where they engage the children in activities to help them cope with the stress of being hospitalized.

Their efforts help bring a sense of normalcy to the lives of children and their families.

“The Stony Brook students bring fun activities each week for the kids,” said Paulette T. Walter, MA, CCLS, Certified Child Life Specialist at Stony Brook Children’s.

“We work closely with them to integrate their activities and enthusiasm with our staff and patients.

The Stony Brook chapter has also been very active in fundraising and bringing special events to us.”

Naeem, 22, of Flushing, Queens, said he started the Stony Brook chapter of Project Sunshine in 2012 after he read a book in which the founder of Project Sunshine was interviewed.

United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk’s “The Employment Connection” has been awarded an employment training grant from Bank of America.

The grant funds will enable “The Employment Connection” to provide a 30 hour, approved national curriculum group course in Customer Service, resulting in a National Professional Certification in Customer Service.

The curriculum will address soft skills training for individuals with disabilities and prepare them for customer interactions in the workplace. This certification is recognized by many employers nationwide.

After successful completion of the course, resume preparation and job placement assistance will also be offered.

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are opting for an alternative spring break close to home this year, and will spend the week of April 1st through 5th aiding in recovery efforts for local communities that were destroyed earlier this year by Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with organizations such as the Gray Beards, Tunnel to Towers and Sandy Relief Long Beach, students will stay close to home to work in Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Breezy Point and Staten Island, some of the hardest hit areas in New York and New Jersey.

This past October, Superstorm Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 hurricane season, flooded homes, streets, tunnels and subway lines, destroyed property and left thousands without power. The storm affected countless individuals,

including many members of the SJC community.

Now, nearly five months later, SJC students, alumni, faculty and staff are eager to assist those still suffering and decided to cancel trips they had planned to volunteer in other locations around the country.

Sponsored by SJC’s Campus Ministry, the Habitat for Humanity, STRIPES (Students Taking a Role in Positively Empowering Society) and STARS (Students Taking an Active Role in Society) clubs, faculty members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, selected a group of 26 students that were willing to spend their spring breaks rebuilding structures, moving sand, painting and helping in any way possible after Superstorm Sandy tore through the east coast, leaving particularly severe damage in New York and New Jersey.

“These groups have been working hard to train, plan, organize and fundraise for this year’s alternative spring break,” said Bryan Gill, moderator of the Habitat for Humanity Club and assistant dean of students and student life on the Long Island Campus.

“With such a large group of volunteers, we will be able to split into smaller groups and reach more communities and help even more people. We will also spend time reflecting on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.”

Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Making A Difference

Six vital members of the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center represent three of the mother/daughter teams who have collectively contributed 141 years of service in volunteer work.

A volunteer awards luncheon that will honor these women and other dedicated volunteers will be held at Captain Bill’s Bayview House on April 8th. Dignitaries, board members, hospital leadership and guests will join Guild members

to recognize outstanding service achievements.

The Guilds are groups of individuals who work diligently for the benefit of the medical center.

These volunteers organize community activities, staff the hospital gift shop, hold annual fund- raising events and operate an offsite thrift shop to support Good Samaritan. In 2012, the Guilds raised more than $268,000, with more than 40,000 hours of service donated as well.

President and Past President Vera Meinhold and her mother, Millie Mascari, joined the Lindenhurst/North Babylon Guilds in 1975. They have been instrumental in bringing valued volunteers to help raise funds to support hospital services. Rose Cappiello and her daughter, Marie Nicharico, and Ellen Fornaro and her daughter, Eileen Fornaro help to sustain the Hospital Guild Thrift Shop in Babylon since 1986.

Honoring Culture

The language department of ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School held its International Night on March 13th. Visitors to the event enjoyed a variety of foods representing many different cultures, including Spanish, Italian, French, Korean, Chinese, Pakistani, Irish, Jewish, Polish, German and Greek.

Foods were prepared by students and shared with

peers, family, friends and faculty in attendance.

Several student groups performed in the auditorium.

Students presented a salsa dance for the audience and poems were recited in Italian. Performers sung traditional songs in Spanish, Italian and French, and the American Sign Language classes performed two songs as

A Chinese auction was held during the festive evening, with 100 percent of the money raised donated to the Long Beach High School band, which was severely impacted

by Superstorm Sandy. In addition, 47 baskets were donated by local businesses and families and raffled off.

A total of $770 was raised for the cause.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently joined members of Walt Whitman High School’s Hispanic Youth Task Force to discuss several pieces of legislation the students feel will have a serious impact on the Hispanic community.

“During their visit, the students provided me with tremendous insight on an array of issues facing members of the

Hispanic community,” said Lupinacci. “As our state and nation continue to have very serious discussions about immigration, it is paramount that we have an open and respectful dialogue.

Nearly all Americans come from some type of immigrant background, and it is in this vein that we continue to build a stronger and more inclusive

society. I want to thank the students for being leaders in their community and demonstrating a commitment to public service and outreach from which we all can benefit.”

Junior Iron Chefs

Students of the Elwood School District recently took part in the first Long Island Junior Iron Chef competition sponsored by the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and Whole Foods Market.

The ElwoodJohn H. Glenn High School team, Dough Boys, comprised of 10th-graders Chris Bosco, Jacob Pagan and Michael Sgambati and under the leadership of team supervisor Sam Pagan, took first place in the competition. The winning recipe of black bean burgers was a big hit with the judges.

The goal of the

competition was to encourage young students to embrace new skills in cooking that support a healthier lifestyle, a criterion that students were expected to follow when creating a recipe.

Student recipes could not contain meat, fish or nuts and needed to include local seasonal food and USDAapproved ingredients.

In preparation for this competition, students researched ingredients, practiced their recipes and took an educational tour of Whole Foods.

Also recognized for their efforts at this event were students Kristen Laub,

who was representing the Wilson Tech team known as Team Kombert, and Jason Foerster, Ashley Mullan and Taylor Williams of the Elwood Middle School Home and Career Club, who called themselves “Elwood Eats.”

“This was a phenomenal experience for these students,” remarked Rosa Glass, Elwood Middle School team supervisor and teacher in the district.

“I am so proud of all of the students who participated.

They worked hard on their dishes and learned a great deal about nutrition and choosing healthy ingredients.”

Students of Oldfield Middle School in the Harborfields Central School District recently spent the day shadowing select members of the staff during the 2nd Annual Teacher For A Day event. Chris Havranek and Robert McCoy, OMS student government advisers, paired students

and staff based on studentcreated lists of educational preferences.

“I wanted to shadow Mrs. Madden because she is a special teacher who makes learning fun,” remarked sixth-grade student Samantha Ousey, “especially for students who really need to experience things to learn

them. She has taught me so much.”

Dressing the professional part, students met with their mentor staff members to discuss the plans for the day. They then enjoyed the experience of shadowing and co-teaching to see what it’s like to be a “teacher for the day.”

Surprise Reader Day

Sunquam Elementary School in Melville recently invited Suffolk Legislator Lou D’Amaro to highlight the importance of reading by participating in its Mystery Reader Day. The special event was held in conjunction with the annual Parents as Reading Partners (PARP) statewide program.

Sunquam PARP Committee Co-Chairs Allison Gruberger and Jill Varlack planned an entire day-long celebration built around the theme “Dive

Into Reading.” Legislator D’Amaro surprised the students in Mrs. Belz’s 5th grade class and shared John, Paul, George & Ben, a humorous story about several of America’s founding fathers (John Hancock, Paul Revere, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson) when they were children. The book is by author Lane Smith.

“As an avid reader with a love of American history, I enjoyed sharing this

fun, comical tale with the Sunquam students. It was great to watch their faces light up as the characters came to life and the students began to relate to these important figures from our Country’s past,” said Legislator D’Amaro. “I once again thank the entire Sunquam community for allowing me to be a part of this wonderful event and applaud them for showing the children how important it is to ‘take the plunge’ and ‘dive’ into a good book.”

Students learned that reading is rewarding and were encouraged to pump up their brains by going on a “reading rampage” and enjoying different types of reading material.

“Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted

and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.

“There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical

treatments to help reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said.

Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement,

difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease.

Among the honorees was Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer, who, at 28 years old, is a 10-year veteran of the United States Army and was recently named Suffolk’s “Top Cop” for 2012. D/S Turzer made 108 DWI arrests last year as a member of the Sheriff’s Highway

Enforcement Section. He holds the record for the highest number of DWI arrests in all of Suffolk County for the year 2012, and made a quarter of the total number of DWI arrests made by Suffolk’s deputies. The Section made an impressive 416 DWI arrests in 2012 while patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and was also honored by M.A.D.D. during today’s ceremony.

Suffolk Sheriff Vincent DeMarco offered praise to all the deputies for their excellent work in

patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and had this to say about D/S Turzer’s service: “I’m especially proud to have Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer on our team, and thank him for his service to Suffolk County residents and to our nation. Sunrise Toyota announced today that it will be sponsoring A Night of Song and Dance at The Gateway Playhouse on Sunday, April 28th. The benefit event will consist of a buffet and silent auction at 5 p.m., followed by a dance performance at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds go to a local Long Island family in need.

Deb Cordaro’s on-going battle with cancer has been causing financial stress for her and her family of Ridge. When Jimmy Berg,

owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family.

In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida.

While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a

portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment.

The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage.

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves.

The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag

#mymoves, consumers can help spread the notion that exercise can be fun.

On National Walking Day, a day where hundreds of thousands across the nation take steps to improve their health, Americans are encouraged to spend at least 30 minutes of their day briskly walking.

Physical activity is critical to being healthy, but less than 50 percent of adults get enough daily exercise.
