Thirty Two artists presenting 42 photographs has been chosen as finalists in the Huntington Arts Council’s 2013 “Photography” exhibition. The exhibition is juried by noted photographer Yvonne Berger, with Best in Show and Honorable Mention awards being announced at the opening reception on Friday, April 26th at the Main Street Petite Gallery, 213 Main Street, Huntington, NY 11743. In reviewing the work submitted and selected, juror Yvonne Berger noted, “With over 300 entries to view it was not easy for me to choose the honorable mentions least of all best in show. There was a wide of subject matter and photographic techniques submitted, from Polaroid transfer and pinhole camera images to digital images.
Photography is a constantly evolving medium. The subject matter ranged from portraits and landscapes to macro and photojournalism. I tried to give a representation of all of these subject areas in my choices for images selected for the show. Photographic technique was also highly considered in the selections as well as composition.” The artists selected for this show are, Monica Agosta, Irene Andreadis, Henry O. Broder, Joe Constantino, Scott Farrell, Judith Feinman, Jim Finlayson, David Gearino, Andrea Gomez, Marzena Grabczynska, William Grabowski, Samuel Jaffe, John Killelea, Herb Knopp, Evan Lavine, Jill Rader Levine, Richard Levy, Stan Mehlman, Lauren Miceli, Elizabeth Milward, Kimberly Muto, David Quinn, Burt Reminick,
Alan M. Richards, Mary F. Ruppert, Donald Thiergard, Jeff Urquhart, Pamela Waldroup, Marlene Weinstein, Robert R. Weiss, Zach Wolff and Diane Woodcheke . About the Juror: Yvonne Berger, is a professional photographer and head instructor of Photography at the Art League of Long Island. Ms. Berger is the Director and teacher at the Center for Photographic Art, 22 Clinton Avenue, Huntington Village. The “Photography” exhibit will be on display from the gallery reception on Friday, April 26th - June 3rd. A Taste Of Northport
The next stop in Northport Historical Society’s popular dining series, A Taste of Northport is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24th at Rockin’ Fish (155 Main Street, Northport), the newest addition to the Village’s fine Main Street restaurants. Owner-chef Rob Haddow is devising a special threecourse dinner for the evening, which begins at 7:30 p.m., and guests
will also be treated to a complimentary sampling of four fine beers and ales. “When we first launched ‘A Taste of Northport’ last year, Rob (Haddow, chefowner of both restaurants) graciously hosted us at Crossroads Café,” explains Society Director Heather Johnson. “At that time, he shared with us his plans for the launch of Rockin’ Fish, and we are thrilled that he is hosting a dinner for us there this year.”
Rockin’ Fish opened last year after a lengthy renovation and update that revealed many unique elements of the historic 1880s building. Mr. Haddow’s aim to preserve the historic character and elements of the fine old building while creating a handsome and comfortable setting for his restaurant has been achieved. Capacity for this event is strictly limited to the first 40 paid reservations,

edP dental Plan
For more than 10 years, EDP Dental Plan of Ronkonkoma has provided Long Islanders with an affordable dental care plan. EDP developed a cost savings program that is available to anyone. EDP’s lowcost plan saves its members money on all dental procedures, from cleanings and exams to implants and braces. The discounts are given to the patient up front at the time of treatment to make it simple for the member to use. Petrone reminds persons with unpaid parking tickets that they can settle accounts in the month of April at a 40 percent discount of what is owed in fines and penalties. “This is a one-time opportunity for persons with unpaid tickets to clear their books and their consciences,” Supervisor Petrone said. “I hope the financial incentive will prompt people to pay fines that in some cases have been lingering for as long as eight years.” The amnesty, which will be in effect from April 1st to April 30th, targets the approximately $625,000 in outstanding fines and penalties motorists incurred dating back to January 1st, 2005 and includes all tickets for which persons were to have replied to the Town’s Parking Violations Bureau. Childlike Mornings By: Gene McParland, North Babylon Sometimes morning comes softly, like a small child tip-toeing quietly into your bed. These are the best of awakenings. Mornings seems more comfortable, like that small child snuggling by your side. Your morning coffee is just right When looking at a smiling face and loving eyes across the table from you, even if this picture is only in the mind’s eye. On such a morning evening seems a million miles away, winging its way gently on the wings of a dove returning to nest for night.

Assemblyman Chad Lupinacci recently took time to highlight a statewide program called RecruitNY, which allows local fire departments to open their doors to area residents so they can learn what it takes to be a volunteer firefighter in their community. The statewide campaign will take place on Saturday, April 27th and Sunday, April 28th. “Volunteer firefighters and EMS provide an extraordinary service to our communities. In times of emergency, we count on these dedicated individuals for protection and safety,” said Lupinacci. “That being said, there continues to be a tremendous need for volunteers in our communities. Joining with the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY), I’m proud to announce the RecruitNY program is coming to our community. I strongly encourage residents to contact their local department to learn more.”
During the open house period, departments will discuss the requirements to volunteer, conduct demonstrations, answer questions, and let visitors know how to get involved. Interested individuals can contact their local fire department to determine if they are participating in the open house and, if so, when their doors will be open to the public. As well as highlighting the duties and rewards that come with being
a volunteer firefighter, RecruitNY will help raise public awareness about the real need for more volunteers in our state. The hope is that a collaborative effort among volunteer fire departments statewide will turn the declining number of volunteer firefighters around. For more information, contact your local fire department or visit http:// www.recruitny.org/.

Re-Entry Job Fair
On March 25th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, the Suffolk County Department of Labor and the Suffolk County ReEntry Task Force held the first of its kind ReEntry Job Fair at Suffolk Community College. Over 200 participants attended the job fair and over 14 companies were represented. In addition, 20 not-for-profits were represented to provide information about resources available and services they offer. “With my appointment of Deputy Police Commissioner Risco Mention-Lewis last year, Suffolk County has made a commitment to break the cycle of recidivism,” said County Executive Steve Bellone. “One of the major components to breaking the cycle for repeat
offenders is to ensure they are prepared and have sustainable employment. This first of its kind job fair sponsored by Suffolk County is opening the doors to the ex-offender community and allowing potential employers access to an employable pool of personnel.” The Re-Entry job fair also hosted career preparation seminars, workshops and discussion groups including: Interviewing Skills, Resume Development, and Employment Incentive Information. One of the highlights of the event was the success stories shared by ex-offenders. The stories of the exoffenders were compelling and inspiring as they talked about their pursuits of higher education and their desire to turn their
lives around. Many spoke about the need to have a positive support network to help them through the process of returning to a productive life as an upstanding citizen. One of the participating companies shared with the Department of Labor, “I was very glad I attended Monday’s event. I am hoping to be able to employ at least a few of the candidates now, and possibly more individuals in the same circumstance, in the future.” Thank you for the opportunity,” Thomas Humphreys. Suffolk County plans to host the Re-Entry job fair at least once a year but based on responses from employment companies and participants will consider more frequent Re-Entry job fairs.
