F
irst graders at Smithtown Elementary School performed in the annual Antarctic Antics Penguin Show under the direction of Music teacher Esther Yoon. Dressed in their adorable costumes, they sang penguin songs such as The Penguin Polka and I’m Almost Hatched. Parents and families then joined the first grade penguins back in their classrooms so the children could share their knowledge of our flightless friends. A great time was had by all.

Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative, a two-day, hands-on programs on hunting safety will be offered in April by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education unit, the agency announced today. The Hunter Safety Course will be offered on April 20th and 21st at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville. Both events are being sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education unit, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club. The Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-ofstate sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. It
includes the streamlining of hunting and fishing licensing and reducing license fees, improved access for fishing at various sites across the state and increasing hunting opportunities in various regions. “Hunting and fishing are an important part of Long Island’s heritage, and we are very fortunate that our region offers a multitude of diverse and rewarding recreational opportunities,” said DEC Commissioner Joe Martens. “These youth education courses fit right in with Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing initiative to expand hunting and fishing opportunities in New York State. DEC applauds our local sportsmen and women, the Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club for their tireless work towards the protection of our environment and natural resources. The
2013 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce children to hunting ethics and to teach them how to be responsible hunters.” Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75word application. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate or Bow Hunter Education Training Certificate. These certificates are required in order to purchase a hunting license. Enrollment in the class is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken either their Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education course. For more information or to register for one or both of these sessions, contact the NYS DEC Sportsman Education Office at 631.444.0255.

Suffolk County Community College Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy, Thomas Curtin, was recently announced as the winner of the 2013 Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize Competition for his essay Berkeley’s Conception of Causal Power. Essays were required to be new and unpublished, written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley were directed to be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes was followed. Submissions were blind reviewed and judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. One winner was selected. Some years before their deaths, Professor and Mrs. Colin Turbayne established an International Berkeley Essay Prize competition in cooperation with the Philosophy Department
at the University of Rochester. A highly popular teacher of philosophy, the late Professor Turbayne is often described by former students as a “consummate teacher” who made a lasting impression on them. He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published by Yale University Press in 1962. Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize. Thomas Curtin is a recent Ph.D. graduate from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland. He has a Masters of Arts
in Philosophy from University of London, Birkbeck College and a Bachelors of Arts in Philosophy from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. He specializes in the history of modern philosophy and the philosophy of religion, especially 18th century philosophy of religion. Curtin is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Ammerman Campus philosophy department, having started teaching at Suffolk County Community College in the spring 2012 semester. Dr. Lowell Kleiman, Academic Chair for Suffolk County Community College’s Philosophy Department said, “On behalf of the department, we would like to congratulate Tom on receiving this prestigious and significant award. We are fortunate to have him in our department and gain insights from his hard work, talents and skills.”

Outreach Dinner
Try it now. On March 7th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its Alzheimer’s Disease Education Conference and Expo 2013 at the Melville Marriott. Approximately 60 vendors and 300 people were in attendance for this event. The conference featured numerous breakout sessions, including a caregiver discussion panel facilitated by ADRC Instructor Ellen Tolle, RN, MPS, who encouraged caregivers to discuss the challenges and experiences they encountered when
caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease and a session on “Legal Planning and Eldercare Concerns for the Caregiver and Person with Dementia presented by Frank Buquicchio, Esq, Member, ADRC’s Legal Advisory Committee. This year’s keynote speaker was Bobbie Braun, a local artist, designer and philanthropist. During her speech, Ms. Braun talked about what it was like to care for parents who were living with Alzheimer’s Disease. She shared with those in attendance the ups and downs, the humor
and the complexity of finding the right care for her parents. Thrown into her care giving role on a moment’s notice, Ms. Braun worked diligently to develop what is an evolving long-term care plan while advocating on behalf of her parents to ensure quality care and maintaining the flexibility needed to address a moving disease process. For more information about ADRC, please contact Mary Ann MalackRagona at 631.820.8068 or visit www.ADRCinc.org.

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference‌that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no
shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit
the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Scouting For Food
Boy Scouts from Troop 125 worked through the Sunday of March 10th collecting donations of boxed and canned goods from shoppers of Commack’s King Kullen and ShopRite. These donations, totaling in an impressive 1139 pounds, were collected for the local families of Long Island who are in need of food. This, combined with the Peanut Butter and Jelly Drive Collection from December (903 lbs), totals 2042 pounds of food collected by the troop this year. Approximately 260,000 people on Long Island rely on soup kitchens, food pantries, or emergency
shelters for help with food each year. Troop 125 aids in Long Island’s fight against hunger along with other local scouting troops and the Commack United Methodist Church’s Peanut Butter Jelly Gang. The Peanut Butter Jelly Gang is a program that meets the first Saturday of every month to package sandwiches which also go to aid people deprived of food. Boy Scout Troop 125 meets every Tuesday from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys ages 11 through 18 residing in Commack,
Dix Hills, East Northport, Kings Park, Smithtown and their surrounding communities. For membership information, contact Scoutmaster Bob Kowalski via email at scoutmaster@ troop125ny.org or visit the website at www. troop125ny.org.

Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, has received the Community Service Award from the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County (VIBS) in recognition of her efforts to establish the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Center at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH). Dr. Xippolitos received the award “for her role in establishing a SANE Center at Stony Brook University and for partnering with VIBS to establish a training program for forensic nurse examiners,” said Pamela Johnston, Executive Director of VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center. “These specially trained nurses
provide compassionate healthcare to traumatized survivors, while collecting evidence that will be crucial for police investigation and the DA’s prosecution.” “To be honored by VIBS is quite thrilling,” Dr. Xippolitos said in accepting the award during a March 7th ceremony in St. James. “The people that VIBS touches are people in need. Those who work at VIBS are pioneers in the field of intimate violence, and their services bring hope to thousands of individuals, adults and children on Long Island.” A long-time volunteer with VIBS, Dr. Xippolitos helped establish the SANE Center at SBUH in 2009. The center is a collaborative effort among VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital, the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Staffed by Registered Nurses with advanced education and critical preparation in the forensic examination of sexual assault victims, the center provides comprehensive evidence collection for more effective investigations and better prosecutions, while preserving the victim’s dignity and reducing psychological trauma. Last year, Stony Brook’s SANE Center saw 121 victims in the hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr. Xippolitos said. “Our School of Nursing continues to work closely with VIBS educational outreach programs,” Dr. Xippolitos said. In particular, she cited the work of Marie Ann Marino, EdD, RN, PNP, Associate Dean for Academic
Affairs and a certified forensic nurse, who educates Stony Brook nurses who aspire to become SANE nurses. SANE nurses are on call 24 hours a day to meet the needs of victims who are brought into any of Suffolk County’s three SANE centers, located at Stony Brook, Good Samaritan Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center. The SANE program has operated in Suffolk County since 1999. “The work that these nurses do honors the victim’s right to make choices about medical and emotional care, as well as legal prosecution,” Dr. Xippolitos said. A native of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Xippolitos received her AS degree in Nursing from Farmingdale College. She received her bachelor of science and master of science in nursing degrees from Stony Brook University School of Nursing, and she completed her PhD in Nursing at Adelphi University. As Dean of the School of Nursing, she is responsible for more than 1,000 student nurses. Dr. Xippolitos is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric nursing. She is certified as a Nurse Administrator through the American Nurses Credentialing Board and is a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and New York Organization of Nurse Executives, serving on AONE’s International Committee. She is a charter member and past president of Kappa Gamma Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, International, the international honor society for nursing.
Fresh Air Fund Day In recognition of The Fresh Air Fund’s 137th summer of bringing together New York City children and volunteer host families in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has recognized March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of inner-city boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy
New York City streets to enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country! Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children for one or two weeks or more in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the
beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the star-filled skies.”
Gurwin Photo Contest Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest. Now in its 20th year, the contest offers amateur photographers an opportunity to enter photographs in ten categories: Landscapes, Travel, People, Pets, Children, Wildlife, Nature, Still Life, Computer Manipulated and Student. A maximum of 5 entries per photographer at $5 each will be accepted. Photographs will be judged by a panel of professional judges at
the close of the contest, and winners will be chosen based on clarity, composition, subject matter and suitability for display at the Center. Winning photographers will be awarded various cash prizes at a reception held in June, and winning photos will be enlarged and permanently displayed at the Gurwin Center for the enjoyment of residents and visitors to the facility. The deadline for submissions is April 15th. The Center’s renowned contest is made possible by the Tiffen Company (Hauppauge), long-time
sponsors of the contest, in memory of Helen and Nat Tiffen, the company’s founder and a former Gurwin resident. The Tiffen Company is a leading manufacturer of glass filters and other fine projects for digital, still, video, motion pictures and television. Applications for the Gurwin Photo Contest are available from the Gurwin Center’s Public Relations office, or at www.gurwin. org. For more information, or an application, visit www.gurwin.org or call 631.715.2568.
Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air
children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. Firsttime Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has provided free summer
experiences to more than 1.7 million innercity children since 1877. For more information about becoming a Fresh Air volunteer host, please call Joan Giusto at 631.683.4010 or The Fresh Air Fund at 1.800367.0003. Visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www. freshair.org.
Stop World Hunger Stop World Hunger, Inc. is pleased to announce its schedule of tennis events for the 2013 season. This year marks the 33rd year of Stop World Hunger’s charity tennis events for famine relief. All funds are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist them in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children “where the need is greatest.” Currently, the World Food Programme estimates that 2.6 million children die annually of hunger-related causes. When it comes to starving children, the only
acceptable number is zero. First up for the 2013 is the Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Party. Scheduled for Saturday evening, March 23rd, it takes place at Carefree Raquet Club in North Merrick. The tennis party lasts from 8 p.m. to midnight. Players are guaranteed two hours of playing time (doubles) and plenty of refreshments. The cost is $15 for players and $7.50 for non-players. Next up is the annual Stop World Hunger Spring Tennis Tournament. Divisions are established based upon the ability levels of the registrants:
intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+). Players schedule their own matches at mutually convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between April 6th and June 16th. Awards will be presented at a special June 22nd Tennis Party. The registration deadline is Friday, March 29th. Events for the Summer and Fall will be announced later in the year. For more information, contact Matt at 631.789.3618.

Scavenger Hunt
PENGUIN DAYS - First graders at Smithtown Elementary School performed in the annual Antarctic Antics Penguin Show under the direction of Music Teacher, Esther Yoon. Dressed in their adorable costumes, they sang penguin songs such as The Penguin Polka and I’m Almost Hatched. Parents and families then joined the first grade penguins back in their classrooms so the children could share their knowledge of our flightless friends.
Some of the greatest entrepreneurial and scientific minds were gathered on March 6th at a dinner reception held at the Garden City Hotel to honor the 2013 Inductees into the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame. According to the LITHF Steering Committee Chair, Lawrence Waldman, “The Long Island Technology Hall of Fame honors the exceptional accomplishments of commanding figures whose contributions have made our region a leader in science and technology, discovery, and imagination.” Additionally, the LITHF, “seeks to encourage the next generation that will become our technology leadership,” and thereby celebrated Michael Zhang, an Intel Finalist from Smithtown East, as a “Young Hall of Famer.” This is the second year in a row that a Smithtown East science research student has been celebrated by LITHF. Mr. Waldman expressed that, “these
HAPPY 100TH DAY! - The 100th day of school was a bit later than usual this year, but Commack’s primary schools students celebrated in great style! Second graders in Lori Busch’s class at Indian Hollow came dressed as if they were 100 years old. Their costumes included grey hair, mustaches, walkers, canes, wrinkles, and bifocals. The children had a good time “in character,” and with the advances in medicine, and health and wellness awareness, they may live to 100 and beyond!
JOURNEYING INTO HISTORY - Mt. Pleasant Elementary 4th graders were whisked back into time when Journeys Into American Indian Territories visited their school. The students learned about Indian customs and beliefs, made clay pots, played native games and even chose class leaders the way the Iroquois did.
Mrs. Collett’s and Mrs. Muffly’s first grade students at St. James Elementary School partnered up and used I-Pads to go on a scavenger hunt to celebrate the first 100 days of school. Students used the I-pads
to read QR codes hidden around the classrooms and in the hallway. The QR codes were linked to math review questions on topics they have learned over the past 100 days. Students then plotted their answers
on a chart which revealed the number 100. This ingenious activity integrated I-pads, critical thinking skills and cooperative learning on this special day.
students reflect the caliber of high quality education Long Island continues to provide to ensure seeding its future in technology.” Michael Zhang, a student in the science research program at Smithtown East, was chosen as 1 of 40 National Finalists in the Intel Science Talent Search Competition held in Washington, D.C. during March 7th-13th. His research titled, RoleInducted Perspective Visual Behavior during Scene Free Viewing, was conducted at Stony Brook University under the mentorship of Dr. Gregory Zelinsky. According to Ms. Maria Zeitlin, Coordinator of the Smithtown East research program, “Michael is well deserving of this recognition. I have worked with him for 3 years in our program, and it was his intelligent, unfettered mind which led me to encourage his application to the Intel STS. His ability to synthesize information and comprehend the statistical analysis of his
work is rivaled by none. In addition, he is an informed scientist who actively pursues the study of music, poetry, and the human condition.” In attendance at the LITHF Celebration were Ms. Zeitlin, Michael’s parents, and Mr. Edwin Thompson, Principal of Smithtown East. According to Mr. Thompson, ““ I am very proud of Michael for being selected as a Finalist in the Intel Science Competition and equally proud of Ms. Maria Zeitlin for her dedication and hard work in making our science research program one of the most elite in our country. It was an honor to be able to attend Michael’s induction into the Long Island Technology Hall of Fame as a Young Hall of Famer on March 6th. It was quite obvious to me that the Long Island technological community is a leading contributor in the advancement of technology innovation and education.”

Scout Presented With Emblem
Reaching Out
After the tragic events in Newtown, Connecticut, the staff at Burr Intermediate School in Commack felt compelled to share their heartfelt support with the staff at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The art department created a symbolic mural to depict the school’s
wishes of hope, peace, and strength. Ms. Jennifer Fleming, art teacher, planned and sketched the mural, incorporating her colleagues’ collective intentions and ideas, and then engaged staff in the mural’s completion. The words surrounding the dove encompass
thoughts and prayers for healing, and “our hand prints represent the connection we feel as educators to the event,” said Principal Rhonda Pratt. “The single red heart symbolizes the love we wish to see in our world.”
India Day
The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - A Scout Is Reverent - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith. As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements. For the 8 to 11 year old Cub Scouts, the Aleph
Emblem requires seven areas of study, including Torah, prayers, religious holidays, the synagogue or temple, Bible heroes, famous American Jews, and the land of Israel. In observance of the 12th point of the Scout Law, Medford’s Daniel Arnoldi previously of Cub Scout Pack 543 (Patchogue-Medford) and now of Boy Scout Troop 40 (Medford) was presented with the Aleph Emblem on March 3rd, at the Suffolk County Council’s Jewish Committee on Scouting’s annual Awards and Recognition Breakfast, held at Temple Beth Chai of Hauppauge, by JCOS
member Fred Cohen. Scout Daniel Arnoldi was presented with a medal, certificate, a purple and silver “scouting religious emblem knot” (to be sewn onto his uniform), and a special Jewish Committee on Scouting kippah (skullcap). Boy Scout Daniel Arnoldi previously of Cub Scout Pack 543 (PatchogueMedford) and now of Boy Scout Troop 40 (Medford) is the son of Janet and Roger Arnoldi of Medford and brother to Venture Crew member Jessica Arnoldi (Venture Crew 1776, Patchogue-Medford High School).
Third graders at Smithtown Elementary hosted the Tour Through India program as a culmination to their social studies unit. Children dressed in saris and dhotis, presented Power Point
Presentations, and shared cross-curricular projects with their guests. This fun day ended with an authentic catered lunch from the Curry Club in Setauket where the children feasted on
Chicken Tikka Masala, Peas Pilaf, Chicken Curry and Alu Tikki Chaat. A pleasurable learning experience was had by all who participated.
communities and society as a whole. The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives. March is recognized by groups across the country as an opportunity to highlight the accomplishments and
challenges facing people with developmental disabilities and their families. UCP Suffolk encourages all to celebrate “Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month” by sharing these important facts: • Developmental disability is a natural part of the human experience and affects approximately 4.6 million Americans. • All people with
developmental disabilities can be productive, contributing members of their communities! • During times of economic decline, essential services and supports for people with developmental disabilities are often threatened. • Policy makers can only make good public policy when they hear from the people directly affected by their decisions! “People with
developmental disabilities and their families have come far in improving their lives and enjoying the same access as every other American to housing, education, employment, and more but there is still work to be done,” said Stephen Friedman, UCP of Suffolk - President, CEO. “Communities can get more involved and become more responsive by embracing people with disabilities and

Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of heaven, blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh show me herein you are my mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3x) Holy Mother, I place this cause in you hands. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. Amen. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. After 3 days, the request will be granted. With the support of the Nesaquake administration and the recruitment of several of his teachers, Michael gave up his lunch period each day for a week to sell lollipops to the students. Entries are now being accepted for the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center’s Annual Photo Contest.

SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! Here he is pictured in his new home.
