Voted #1 Arts School by the Long Island Press three years in a row, the Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is where careers in the arts begin. Find out more at an Open House on Saturday, April 6th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school located at 239 Cold Spring Road in Syosset. See if LIHSA is the right place for you by sampling some of the professionallevel classes that are taught by recognized artists and experienced master teachers. Sketch from a live model, sit in on a jazz jam or take a dance class. Join the theatre ‘techies’ in creating special effects, participate in an improv class, join in a film shoot on location, watch a student performance, take an art class and then be dazzled by the artwork on display in the student art gallery. “Whether it’s making movies, performing at Carnegie Hall, dancing professionally, acting or directing films or plays —
this is the place to start making your dream of a career in the arts a reality,” says LIHSA Principal Ava Favara. Explore the school’s theatre, art and dance studios, “high tech” Digital Music and Media Production Lab and rehearsal rooms. Tour the entire state-of-the-art facility and talk with staff, professional artists, alumni and parents of students. Hear about LIHSA’s outstanding programs, from its half- and full-day high school studies to its Summer Arts Academy. LIHSA students receive professional-level training in art, dance, theatre, technical theatre, instrumental or vocal music, film, playwriting or Digital Media Production each day as a supplement to their regular courses of study. The school’s alumni have landed starring roles on Broadway and in national touring companies. They also can be found working as technicians for Cirque
MAMMA MIA! at the
de Soleil and at Lincoln Center. Last year’s 84 graduates earned more than $7.5 million in scholarships and grants to continue their education at some of the nation’s most highly esteemed colleges and conservatories. For details on the open house call 516.622.5678 or visit www.lihsarts.org and like us on Facebook www. facebook.com/LIHSArts.

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm
243887N0327
2 Suffolk Zone 2- NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 27, 2013
Open House Set
So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their
wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only
that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Autism Seminar Set
Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first responders and firefighters but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a
firefighter and the father of child with autism. The second, similar to the first seminar, is geared toward law enforcement, security, school support and hospital support personnel. Both will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Dorval, a certified public fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build relationships with the ASD
community. “As a parent of a child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand its scope to include anyone who might interact with individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder will learn in this seminar
Season Kickoff will be helpful to the patient, as well the provider by instilling confidence that he or she will be able to handle any situation that arises,” said Tom Lateulere, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division. The seminars are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about communicating with an individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. All others should register by emailing info@ fpf4autism.org. Checkin opens at 9 a.m. for the morning session and a light breakfast will be served; check-in for the afternoon session will begin at noon and refreshments will be served.
This year, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo celebrates its 44th season with its grand opening on April 11th. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of April. From May 1st to May 21st, the Game Farm will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From alligators to zebra and scores of animals in between, the Long Island Game Farm has many interactive areas where guests can touch and, unlike most zoos, actually feed the animals! During the months of July and August, a weeklong children’s camp — Camp Zoo — will return. Registration for Camp Zoo is currently underway, marking the beginning of its eighth year as a unique program that provides children with a hands-on educational experience

with nature. To see the schedule of upcoming events, visit www. longislandgamefarm.com. “We can’t wait to open for our 44th season. Every year gets better and better as we educate our guests about the animal world and nature. I have the privilege of watching thousands of students experience firsthand what they learn in books from the classroom. One of our greatest joys is when families throughout the region or visiting Long Island get to enjoy the park and spend quality time together. Bringing people together — what could be better? It is sure to be our best season yet,” said Diane Novak, Co-Owner and President of the Long Island Game Farm. One of the best times of the year to visit the Game Farm is early spring, when many of the animals have given birth to newborns. The Game Farm is expecting the births of new animals. “Once you walk into the Game Farm, take in the beauty of springtime and you may witness the magic of birth,” said Ms. Novak. For more information about the Long Island Game Farm, call 631.878.6670, or visit www. longislandgamefarm.com.

Combating Childhood Cancer
Published Weekly By Long Island Media Group LLC
PUBLISHED IN 21 LOCAL EDITIONS IN NASSAU & SUFFOLK COUNTIES
Rallying for a cause is the Commack way! With the ultimate goal of finding a cure for childhood cancers, 500 students, staff members, and community supporters packed the high school gymnasium on March 15 to shave their heads. The Commack unity event has raised a whopping $106,000, with additional donations and pledges still coming in. And so that all that lovely hair did not go to waste, the event was also held to benefit Locks of Love. Many participants donated 10” or more of their hair to make wigs for children with cancer. One spirited young lady, Rachel Kantor, a senior at Commack High School,
shaved her entire head for the cause. She raised $700 in donations for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, and also donated all of her beautiful hair to “Locks of Love.” Her mom Ilyse also donated her hair. “Rachel inspired me, and has accomplished her goal of standing in solidarity of children with cancer,” she said. “Rachel knows of a few students at the high school who have been stricken with cancer, as well as a friend. She feels very strongly that she is doing the right thing in shaving her head.” The annual event generated a lot of enthusiasm from children and adults of every age. Commack’s North Ridge
Primary School (grades K-2) put together a team that raised $26,600, and Burr Intermediate School’s third through fifth grade students raised $6,200! In total, there were 370 “shavees,” and 130 volunteers that helped shave heads, cut hair, register, play music, sweep, photograph, and handle paperwork and donations. Commack’s Team leaders and organizers, high school teachers Lee Tunick, William Scaduto, and Dan Revera are instrumental in motivating and organizing the event each year. It was Lee’s seventh year as a shavee, along with high school student Christopher Walsh, who has raised
$11,000 during that time. Both men were “knighted” by St. Baldrick’s at the event (see photo), a high honor for certain! Commack High School Principal Catherine Nolan said of the organizers, “The three of you, supported by an entire Commack community (young and old, and countless others in between), have spearheaded an initiative that has taken hold in our community, but more importantly, in our hearts. The lessons you model about humanity - and the lessons learned among our children grow exponentially with your efforts and devotion to this noble cause.”

AMBASSADOR WOLF - “Atka,” an ambassador wolf from the National Wolf Conservatory, visited seventh grade students on February 28th. Speakers from the Conservatory discussed the role of the wolf in the wilderness, dispelled myths, and talked about the importance of conservation. This program, supported by the Accompsett Middle School PTA, is in alignment with Science and Common Core Learning Standards.
Celebrating The Irish
Team 6A at Nesaquake Middle School recently enjoyed a St. Patrick’s Day celebration. They learned about the natural resources
and products of Ireland, watched Irish step dancing, and saw many Irish artifacts including fisherman sweaters, Irish lace, china, the bowrain,
an Irish drum, Waterford crystal, pictures, and more. The students enjoyed Irish soda bread and butter and green bagels. A good time was had by all.

those veterans seeking assistance. Funding for the program was secured by Senator Lee Zeldin in the amount of $200,000 through the pilot phase of the program. “The Peer to Peer program is needed in Suffolk County as we have seen a rise of military suicides in our country,” said County Executive Bellone. “Those who are serving or who have served our country need our support and resources and the Peer to Peer program is designed to address the needs of the military community suffering from PTSD.” Suffolk County was chosen as a pilot County because of its large and diverse veteran population coupled with its reputation for delivering quality services to veterans. The Peer to Peer program currently holds seven weekly group meetings throughout Suffolk County
with more than 78 veterans actively participating in the program. The meetings operate with an acceptance of anonymity to ensure full participation by the military community. The program has received full support from Suffolk County Veterans Service groups and the Northport VA Medical Center who also refers veterans to the program.

Suffolk County is one of four municipalities in New York State who have implemented a pilot program named in honor of PFC Joseph Dwyer, a Suffolk County resident who joined the Army after 9/11 and was deployed to Iraq. PFC Dwyer suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lost his battle with PTSD. The Peer To Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel. The unique nature of the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to

Scholarship Offered The Smithtown Historical Society (SHS) is proud to once again offer junior year students in the Township of Smithtown an opportunity to a $1,000 scholarship. The Mildred Smith Scholarship Essay Contest is open to all 11th graders in attendance at Commack, Hauppauge, Kings Park, Smithtown East & West High Schools,
as well as at The Knox School and Smithtown Christian School. Mildred Smith was an original founder of the Smithtown Historical Society and its first President. She possessed an intense passion for the history of Smithtown and was a great friend and supporter of the Society for many years.
The Smithtown Historical Society is proud to honor her though this annual essay contest and hopes that the spirit of Ms. Smith will live on in the devotion and hard work of students submitting essays for consideration. The Annual Mildred Smith Historical Essay Scholarship Contest is in its seventh year. This year’s
theme is: Imagine that you have been presented with a onetime opportunity to use a portal to the past in the Township of Smithtown. Which town or village & period of time in Smithtown’s history would you choose to visit & why? What events were happening? Would you want to be there to witness a specific event,
meet a particular historic figure or family member who inspires you, or just experience the way of life for a Smithtowner at that time? Use historic research to define the value of your decision. Submissions for the contest will be accepted from now until June 14th, at 5 p.m. in the Smithtown Historical
Society’s Headquarters at the Roseneath Cottage, 239 Middle Country Road, Smithtown, New York 11787. For more detailed information regarding the rules and regulations pertaining to the contest, please visit the Society’s website to view an information flier or call 631.265.6768.

The mission of the United Veterans Beacon House is to provide temporary and permanent residence for U.S. Military Veterans and also to provide emergency, temporary and permanent residence for men, women, and women with children.
The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., dating back to 1923. Teens in grades 7 through 12 can apply in 28 categories of art and writing.
Mia Trentadue received Gold Key recognition, the highest level of achievement on the regional level, for her personal essay The Storm. Only 7-10% of regional submissions receive such recognition, and Mia’s essay will now go on to
be judged at the national level. Mia now has the opportunity to have her work appear in national publications and to receive a scholarship award. Over $250,000 in scholarships are presented to winners each year.

On Thursday, March 21st, The SmithtownSunrise Rotary Speaker was John Vigliante, CFSP Owner/Manager of The Branch Funeral Home, located in Smithtown, New York. John’s presentation was on Pre-Planning a Funeral. John discussed the reasons why people decide to Pre-Plan: Many plan ahead because there will be no one who is capable of making responsible decisions. Others have a definite preference concerning their funeral service, and they want their families to be informed and involved in those decisions. Many others pre-arrange because they like the peace of mind knowing there will be adequate funds to cover funeral expenses. Also, prepayment can provide real benefits when applying for Medicaid in the United States. He mentioned that pre-arrangement guarantees that rational decisions can be made ahead of time without the usual urgencies when death takes place. Also discussed were the steps involved in pre-planning such as, determining funeral preferences, options, and recording vital information and gathering documents for the required forms. Next would be selecting a casket, burial vault, and other merchandise associated with the services. Payment can be made for services and merchandise ahead
of time through their funding program. The cost is a matter of personal choice, and the selections and options are featured in The Branch itemized pricing guide. John Vigliante CFSP graduated from Dowling College with a B.A. Business Administration & Management in 2000. He also attended Nassau Community College and has an Associate Degree in Mortuary Science. John is involved with many groups and associations such as, The Smithtown-Sunrise Rotary Club, Sons Of Italy, Knights Of Columbus, Elks, Senior Resource Alliance, Smithtown Chamber Of Commerce, St. James Chamber Of Commerce, Nesconset Chamber Of Commerce, National Funeral Directors Association, New York State Funeral Directors Association and Nassau, Suffolk Funeral Directors. Rotary club members have many opportunities for humanitarian service, both locally and internationally. Service programs address such concerns as health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment. There
is Rotary International Awareness with more than 32,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotarians gain an understanding of humanitarian issues through international service projects and exchange programs. One of Rotary’s highest objectives is to build goodwill and peace throughout the world. Smithtown-Sunrise Rotary meets every Thursday morning at the Smithtown Millennium Diner located on the corner of Main Street and Route 111.
