The Aristocats On Stage

T

he fifth graders at Smithtown Elementary School put on a fabulous Broadway style musical. This year’s show was Disney’s The Aristocats. For the 26th straight year, Smithtown Elementary has highlighted their Fine Arts Department by continuing the celebration of children’s musical theater. The production had a cast of over 75 fifth graders and rehearsed for four months to present flawless performances. Great job!

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) invites you to attend its 26th Annual Angel Ball Celebrating the Stars of Recovery on Thursday, May 2nd at the Garden City Hotel. WABC-TV’s Entertainment Reporter and Movie Critic Sandy Kenyon will emcee and guests will enjoy a red carpet

entrance and reception at 6:30pm, followed by dinner, dancing, and a silent auction at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the gala event will support LICADD’s alcohol and drug prevention education and intervention programs for children and families. “For me, it’s more than just an event,” Richard Antonacci, Angel Ball Dinner Chair and COO and

EVP of Signature Financial, LLC, explained, “we are in the midst of a public health crisis which claims the life of a young person from overdose everyday on Long Island. LICADD’s programs actively seek to alleviate the heartbreaking consequences of addiction, and without the generosity of our event participants, sponsors and auction donors, these life-saving

programs wouldn’t be available.” This year’s Angel Ball honors 2013 Founder’s Award Recipient Curtis Webster, CVLE, whose leadership as a board member and past board chair, helped to shape and expand the agency’s comprehensive addiction and recovery support programs. Mr. Webster passed away in 2012, and

providers, faith-based organizations, school districts, and government agencies. With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD is working aggressively to help the community overcome the challenges presented by prevailing social stigma of alcoholism and drug dependence, by providing a comprehensive array of prevention, support and recovery programs. LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds stated, “We are excited to mark the 57year of providing lifesaving services to Long Islanders with our 26th Annual Angel Ball. It’s an excellent opportunity for our participants to realize the impact their dollars are having- its more than the interventions we provide, the referrals to treatment, the support groups- it’s about the feeling of hope that our families can experience again.” These programs are made possible by the support of business owners, treatment providers, community leaders, parents and local residents like you. To show your support for LICADD, and become part of a generous circle of Long Islanders who are committed to addressing substance abuse and addiction in our communities, please contact Rosanne Slattery at rslattery@licadd.org or call 516.747.2606. The Walk/Run for Friends of Karen was started in 2007 with 25 participants and spearheaded by Evelyn Anderson, a Friends of Karen parent who wanted to run a half marathon to honor her son, Luke, diagnosed with leukemia as a toddler and now enjoying growing up with his loving family. Last year, more than 300 walkers and runners joined the team and more than $340,000 has been raised for the organization. Don’t pass up this wonderful opportunity to help Friends of Karen in their efforts to assist their very special families who turn to them in their time of need. According to a recent study issued by the Annenberg Public Policy Center, widely-held views that there is a suicide spike during the winter holidays is untrue. Instead, suicide and suicide attempts actually spike during the spring/summer months. “We know that this finding is counter-intuitive to commonly-held beliefs,” states Theresa Buhse, Associate Executive Director, Long Island Crisis Center. “However, by correcting this myth, we can be more pro-active in being suicide aware and preventive if we know the reality.” The Crisis Center urges everyone to be aware of the possible “signs of suicide:” · Sadness and crying · Increase or decrease in sleeping patterns · Boredom and listlessness · Angry shifting to silent withdrawal · Withdrawal from usual

social activities, loneliness · Loss of interest in hobbies, sports, job or school · Drop in grades, inability to complete assignments or pay attention in class · Increased risk-taking · Sense of worthlessness and low self-esteem · Increased use of drugs and alcohol · Neglecting personal hygiene and appearance · Re-occurring themes of death and self-destruction in poetry, writing, artwork · Lack of plans for the future · Statements like “I want to die,” “I don’t want to live anymore,” I want to go to sleep and never wake up,” “Soon this pain will be over,” “I don’t want to be here anymore.” “While this seasonal enigma has not yet been completely explained, it is believed that during the winter, people with depression are often surrounded by persons who

are feeling downhearted, too, because of the weather,” continues Ms. Buhse. “However, with the arrival of Spring, people who were feeling down because of the weather start to feel better; and people who are depressed for other reasons remain depressed. They start to question whether they will ever be happy.” The Crisis Center provides suicide prevention and crisis intervention through its 24/7 hotlines at 516.679.1111; or its online and live chat at www.licconline.org; or walk-in counseling at 2740 Martin Avenue, Bellmore.

More than 15,000 women in our community this year will receive care at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. On Saturday, May 4th, at 9 a.m., area residents can show their support for these women and the Center by taking part in the 19th Annual Families Walk for Hope. Hundreds of people take part each year in the fivemile walk through scenic Port Jefferson and Belle Terre. They walk to support women with breast cancer. They walk in memory of a mother, sister, daughter, friend or co-worker whose

life was cut short by the disease. And they walk to raise funds to help women receive state-of-the-art breast care at Mather Hospital. Sign up as an individual or form a team with family and friends, co-workers or schoolmates. Register at www.matherhospital.org/ walk. Those who can’t be at the walk can register as a “virtual walker” or support an existing team. Call 631.476.2723 for more information. The $20 registration fee can be paid in advance or at the Walk. Legislator Lou D’Amaro is alerting local residents about the Suffolk County Office for the Aging Spring 2013 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “With the cold and unpredictable winter weather behind us, it’s an ideal time for Suffolk County seniors to get out and visit with their local senior advocates to learn more about all of the critical programs that are available,” D’Amaro said. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services directly to our seniors in their own communities.” Senior Advocates meet with interested and needy seniors aged 60

and over at regularlyscheduled times in specific locations throughout the community. This spring, they are visiting the following locations in the Town of Huntington: • Huntington Nutrition Center: Wednesdays, April 24th, May 29th and June 26th, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Paumanack Village I & II (Greenlawn): Tuesdays April 23rd and June 18th from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. • Paumanack Village III & IV (Greenlawn): Thursday, May 9th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Paumanack Village V & VI (Melville): Tuesdays, May 14th and June 11th from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. • Huntington Library: Monday, May 13th from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. • South Huntington Library: Thursday, May 26th from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Advocates provide assistance with food stamps, Medicare savings programs, Medicaid applications and Heating Emergency Assistance Program (HEAP)

applications. They also answer questions and make additional recommendations and referrals. For more information about available services, or for directions to any of the aforementioned locations, please call the Suffolk County Office for the Aging at 631.853.8200. Appointments are encouraged but drop-ins are also welcome. No individual will ever be turned away. “Senior citizens are the backbone of our community, and for more than three decades, the Suffolk County Office for the Aging has assisted these very important residents by giving them full and trouble-free access to critical services,” D’Amaro said. “I urge every senior resident to take full advantage of this professional community outreach program so that they don’t miss out on the County’s network of services.”

the Complaint Dept. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one

dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,

St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

Ivy League Middle School students in Smithtown, New York were able to experience the classic pieces of Shakespeare as they were meant to be portrayed- through acting, in a non-traditional style last month. A New York City-based company known as The Shakespeare Forum was brought in by the school’s English teacher, Meagan King, in order to help students better understand the sometimes difficult decoding of language that goes along with Shakespearean literature.

The Shakespeare Forum provided students with exciting and engaging exercises, encouraging them to analyze major themes that connect 14th century England to today’s society. Students were having so much fun decoding difficult excerpts that aligned with the newest Common Core curriculum that the whole three and a half hour session felt like a fun time off from the normal school day routine. As school officials observed student behavior, it was noted that Miss King’s

passion about literature shined through the diverse student body, keeping each student just as engaged with the workshop as she. The Shakespeare Forum commended the abstract and complex thinking of the eleven to thirteen year-old student body that exemplified “maturity well beyond their years.” Ivy League School hopes to bring the forum back next year to continue to breathe life into this timeless literature once again.

Celebrating Young Professionals The Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce has announced the selection of the thirty award recipients for their Celebrate Long Island’s Young Professionals Recognition Event. The announcement was made at The Paramount Theater during a recent Young Professionals Business Blender. The award recipients will be honored at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Wednesday, May 8th during a celebratory reception from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The “Celebrate Long Island’s Young Professionals” event recognizes 30 young people under the age of 30 who are truly committed to their business and civic communities. They are doing extraordinary work within the public, private, government and not-for-profit areas. We are privileged to recognize each honoree for all their

efforts and dedication,” explained Larry Kushnick, Huntington Chamber Vice Chairman. Creative Expressions Hanging By A Thread The Gallery

Featuring Poetry And Photos Submitted By Our Readers!

By: John Tabacco, Stony Brook

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead - some believe there’s something better So we go on and play our games Fill the closet with campaigns of pointless dogma and refrains that laugh at us each time the closet opens But we can take a pill for that

Send Us Your Best Pics To Be Featured

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead, some believe there’s something better So we go on and make our plans in the scheme of things and then we tend to worry about the future till it’s over And all that wasted time was spent for something we could not prevent But pretty soon they will invent a pill for that Doesn’t really matter when you take a vow to live your life and see it through The nature of the universe is moving onward within and without you This I’m told is truth We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead some believe there’s something better So we go on and entertain Paint the closet – hide the stain Just ignore the endless pain - keep the closet bolted We’ve got plenty more pills for that We’re all hanging by a thread and pretty soon our lives are over But does that mean it’s the end?

My Little Darling By: Karen Ranieri, North Massapequa My little darling No one has ever loved me So innocently So purely Your words have a way To make me feel complete and at peace You have my heart for all eternity When you wrap your arms around my soul I feel your love like none I’ve known It helps me to not fear growing old I just want to be with you As we explore life You are my love You are my life

Local H.S. Students Race For Autism

contact 516.541.1443.
