Professors Named Fellows Two Stony Brook University professors – Leonardo Rastelli, PhD and Sheila Silver, PhD – have been named 2013 Guggenheim Fellows based on distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for the future. The fellowships, often called “midcareer” awards, are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.

In the 89th annual John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation competition for the United States and Canada, Rastelli, Associate Professor in the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Silver, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor, Department of Music, were selected as part of a diverse group of 175 scholars, artists, and scientists on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise. They were chosen from among almost 3,000 applicants.

“I am very honored by this recognition,” Rastelli said. “I am both proud and intimidated to appear in the same list as the illustrious colleagues who received the fellowship before.”

Rastelli’s Guggenheim project is called The Superconformal Bootstrap Program. “The general idea of the ‘bootstrap’ is that physical theories must obey stringent consistency conditions,” Rastelli said. “In collaboration with a very talented group of students and postdocs, I plan to apply the modern bootstrap program to theories that have a high degree of symmetry; they are both conformal (which means that they have no intrinsic length scale) and supersymmetric.

Supersymmetry is a symmetry that relates ‘bosons’ and ‘fermions.’ It is a very powerful symmetry – many important discoveries about it were made at Stony Brook. This approach gives insight into certain aspects of physical theories for which no other computational scheme is available.”

Silver was selected in the field of Creative Arts/ Music Composition. She has written in a wide range of mediums, from solo instrumental works to large orchestral works; from opera to feature film scores.

For the past few years, Silver has been composing primarily for the voice and for opera. In 2007 she received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in Music Composition for Opera to compose her opera, The Wooden Sword, which premiered in 2010. Also premiering in 2010 was The White Rooster, A Tale of Compassion, commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries for the exhibit In the Realm of the Buddha, a dramatic cantata composed for the vocal ensemble Tapestry, plus six Tibetan singing bowls and frame drums. She is now completing Beauty Intolerable,

a Songbook based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, composed in collaboration with American Opera Projects and the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, which will premiere this June in New York City.

Her Guggenheim Fellowship was awarded for work on her next opera, A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on the international best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner. In May, Silver will begin, with her family, a six-month stay in Pune, India, studying Hindustani music in preparation for beginning her new opera. She will study Hindustani music with master singer, Narayan Bodas, and also will study the tabla, a percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music. “I want my Western voice to have some of the color – feel – of Hindustani music because this is at the heart of Afghan music,” she said. While in India, Silver also will be working with her librettist, Stephen Kitsakos, Professor of Theater at SUNY New Paltz, to complete the first draft of the opera’s libretto.

Since its establishment in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has granted over $306 million in Fellowships to more than 17,500 individuals, among whom are scores of Nobel laureates, poets laureate, winners of Pulitzer Prizes, Fields Medals, and of other important, internationally recognized honors.

“These artists and writers, scholars and scientists, represent the best of the best,” Edward Hirsch, president of the Foundation, said of the 175 new Guggenheim fellows. “Since 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has always bet everything on the individual, and we’re thrilled to continue the tradition with this wonderfully talented and diverse group. It’s an honor to be able to support these individuals to do the work they were meant to do.”

A World War II maritime patrol bomber similar to those that once hunted Nazi U-boats outside New York Harbor is taking to the air this Memorial Day weekend at the American Airpower Museum at Republic Airport thanks to the efforts of Bristal Assisted Living.

The aircraft will be on display for the purpose of offering a tribute to all US Navy personnel and the Merchant Mariners who sailed in dangerous waters during World War II. Dubbed, the “PBY Catalina,” the “Cat” operated along the Long Island coast line during World War II, searching for Nazi U-boats trying to torpedo Allied freighters and tankers. It served as the “eyes” of the American fleet when radar was in its infancy, and it was instrumental in securing victory over Japanese aircraft carriers in the Pacific and German

battleships in the North Atlantic by spotting them lurking in waters below.

It also rescued thousands of downed pilots as its seaplane hull enabled it to land and take off from the ocean.

“We are honored to be able to sponsor the arrival of this aircraft as it reflects the courage and valor of not just our naval aviators but all those who went into harm’s way on behalf of freedom,” stated Jan Burman, President of Bristal Assisted Living.

His colleague and Bristal Assisted Living partner, Steven Krieger explained, “We believe there is a moral imperative to pause and honor all those who have served our nation, and those who continue to do so. By sponsoring these types of iconic aircraft we can compel a new generation to start asking questions about the heroes in their own families. While this particular aircraft

salutes those who served in the Navy and Merchant Marine the coming holiday weekend is about honoring all those who have served our country.”

The American Airpower Museum will host many of the aircraft flying in the Bethpage Federal Credit Union Air Show this coming Memorial Day Weekend. The museum will be open between Friday, May 24th through Monday, May 27th between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. A gate donation will be requested of $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans and $5 for children.

Flight experiences will be available on a legendary Flying Fortress B-17 World War II bomber throughout the weekend as well as a classic Waco biplane, T-6 Texan and C-47 Airborne paratrooper plane. Flight experience fees are posted at the museum.

The 128-mile walk will take the students eight days to complete, averaging 17.5 miles per day. Stops along the way will include multiple DDI sites as well as St. John’s University.

Along with fellow classmates from St. John’s, students will be staying with DDI host families throughout their journey.

Joining Nathan and John on the journey are Morgan Zajkowski, Marita Rausch, Liam Kenny, and Michael Sardone.

“This walk captures the spirit of my fellow classmates of giving back,” stated John Kenny. “We have gained an increased appreciation for the ways in which we can improve the lives of those around us. With that in mind, we decided we would like to do one final project to commemorate our time

at St. John’s and start our transition to serving the community post graduation.”

Funds raised will go towards DDI’s Little Plains School and Children’s Residential Project. This ambitious project not only includes a new home and added classroom capacity at the school for 24 children with Autism, but includes sorely needed renovations to the school building, which is over 50 years old.

New handicap accessibility, an HVAC system upgrade, roof replacement, lighting upgrades and various other improvements to increase the energy-efficiency of the school building will be included in the work.

“We could not have found a better organization to support than DDI,” commented Nathan Holmes.

“Through financial assistance we hope to support the valuable projects DDI implements and the services it offers to the many children and adults across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.”

All proceeds will go towards granting wishes to children of Suffolk County.

Strength for Life will speak at cancer support groups extolling the benefits of exercise during treatment and in recovery. Since the 2010 American College of Sports Medicine revised guidelines there are numerous studies on the benefits of adding exercise to the treatment

plan.

File Under: Never Again By: Jamie Lynn Ryan We’ve all done it. Admit it. You’ve walked into a movie theatre or arena of some sort – one with “No Outside Food Or Drink Permitted” signs clearly plastered on every entrance – smuggling some type of snack in a well-concealed pocket, a purse, under your hat…whatever. Why should you pay an exorbitant price for refreshments when you can surely find something for far less at a local convenience store, right?

It’s a great idea, in theory. What’s the harm in bringing a bottle of water, a candy bar, maybe even a small bag of popcorn or chips?

Well, none, except when said container self-destructs in your bag before making it through the door unscathed.

Allow me to explain. I recently attended the Iron Man movie marathon screening at my local theatre along with my cousin and his friend. Four movies over nearly 12 hours, necessitating a stockpile

of snacks, clearly. After all, we were in this for the long haul.

For the most part, we timed our mini-meals for the short breaks we were allotted between films. But when those 15-20 minutes weren’t quite enough, well, why let leftover food and beverages go to waste? Not when I had a rather spacious pocketbook with me.

Picture the scene: my pocketbook plus a rather large, rather full fountain soda… oh, and my cousin’s wrapped hamburger thrown in for good measure. You do the math. No sooner were we halfway down the hallway when I felt the faint sensation of liquid trickling out of my bag, down my leg… OH NO, I thought.

Of course, trying to remain covert, the first thing I did was crouch down and take a peak inside the pocketbook. It was a river of root beer.

No, more like a gulf. I gingerly picked my belongings out of the mess and laid them out, sopping, on the rug in front of our theatre. I then took my bag and carefully walked it over to the nearest garbage and poured the

avalanche of liquid out.

Great. Now I had a saturated pocketbook, soaked belongings – and no soda. I gathered everything in my arms and walked down the hall, past two perplexed security guards, into the bathroom, hoping that a mile or so of super-absorbent paper towel would do the trick. No such luck. Thanks to the era of modern conveniences, I was instead met with a wall of automatic hand dryers. Not a paper towel in sight.

About 20 minutes later, I made my way into our theatre, having used approximately 12 rolls of toilet paper to absorb as much of the remaining soda as I could. I turned my pocketbook inside out and tossed whatever wrung-out belongings I could salvage back in.

All that to save a few bucks on overpriced concessions. And I didn’t even have a beverage to show for it.

My cousin’s hamburger, on the other hand, managed to survive the deluge untouched, dry as a bone.

Go figure.

Eagle Scout Achieved supervised a car wash where he raised the funds that would be needed for the project. Dozens of scouts, friends and family members assisted with the fundraiser and the project. A 15 by 40 area adjacent to the butterfly house was cleared of trees, old stumps, overgrown bushes and was replanted with more than 40 bushes.

In total, nearly $500 was raised to fund the project and a total of 180 manhours were expended.

Honored guests at the Eagle Scout ceremony included representatives from the Kings Park Fire Department, the VFW, the Suffolk County Police Department and Half Hollow Hills High School East, where James is a senior. James has an avid interest in the outdoors and wildlife and has been accepted into SUNY Cobleskill, where he plans to pursue those interests in the fall.

St. Johnland Nursing Center in Kings Park formally recognized its long-serving nursing and administrative staff with a special dinner and award ceremony.

CEO Mary Jean Weber commended the honorees for their dedication, compassion and commitment to St. Johnland’s residents, and praised them for working together as a team.

Honored for 45 years of service were Thomas Muldoon of Mastic and Carl

Saunders of Kings Park.

Paul Bergin of Smithtown celebrated 40 years and William Drake (Selden), Donna Verdonck (Port Jefferson), and Mary Jean Weber (Kings Park) were recognized for being at St. Johnland for 30 years.

Diane Bosco (Lake Grove), Carol Bracco (Selden), Maria Candela (Islip Terrace), Dolores Loscalzo (Islip Terrace) and Donna Maniotis (Smithtown) celebrated 25 years at St. Johnland.

Also honored were three retirees: Velma Clawson of Kings Park, Maria Porcella of East Islip and Margaret Bedell of Huntington.

In addition, 40 other employees were awarded pins and certificates for their service to the residents of St. Johnland.

Forty-one percent of all employees have been at St. Johnland for at least five years and 27% more than ten years.

On Sunday March 10th, in a gathering of Troop members, leaders, family and friends, James Andrew Weller of Kings Park Boy Scout Troop 75 was recognized for achieving Scouting’s highest honor and obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. James has been a part of Scouting since age 8 and joined Troop 75 when he turned 12. In order to become an Eagle Scout, a Scout who has already advanced through the ranks by demonstrating leadership, obtaining a number of required merit badges and showing mastery in various skills including first aid, is required to

develop and oversee the completion of a project which substantially benefits his community.

For his Eagle Scout project, James planned and led the building of a butterfly garden at Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown.

James had previously performed community service at Sweetbriar and was familiar with their butterfly house.

James thought it would be worthwhile to develop a garden to attractive native butterfly species that visitors could observe as they approached the butterfly house. James performed research at the butterfly house at the Bronx Zoo and consulted with landscapers and naturalists in the selection of plants that would be attractive to native species of butterflies.

Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish?

By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients.

In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a

healthy, thriving ecosystem.

Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others.

In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey.

In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million

year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians.

When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life.

Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
