In recognition of Black History Month and to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., two fifth-grade classes at Connetquot Elementary School presented a special I Have A Dream mini-concert on February 28th. Directed by music teacher Eileen Egbert, the production included music, important facts and historical references. As the students spoke of the importance of equality
and human rights, the presentation connected to the literacy instruction they are being taught in relation to the newly implemented New York State Common Core Learning Standards. As Principal Deborah Smith explained, fifth-graders in Connetquot and across the district are involved in conversations about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and its impact on today’s society.

In what has become a beloved annual event, Timber Point Elementary School teacher Gail Rhatigan’s preschool class celebrated the 109th birthday of beloved author Dr. Seuss on March 1st. Born as Theodor Geisel on March 2nd, 1904 in Springfield, Mass., Geisel first worked in advertising illustration and political cartooning before finding his popular niche as a writer for the young. During his long
career, Seuss published 46 children’s books, including such humorous favorites as The Cat In The Hat, Horton Hatches The Egg, Yertle The Turtle, Green Eggs And Ham and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish, as well as the The Lorax, the source material for last year’s hit film. His books have been translated into over 15 languages and have sold over 222 million copies. The National Education Association adopted the
author’s birthday as the official date of the annual National Read Across America Day initiative. Rhatigan, a dedicated fan of Seuss, dressed up as famous Seuss character the Cat in the Hat. This event began with organizational meetings in October where students from SJB began working with residents from twelve different group homes. Black History Celebration On February 28th, Bay Shore High School celebrated Black History Month with dynamic performances from Gregory Singer and Julliard-trained violinist Damien Escobar of Nuttin’ But Stringz. Mr. Singer presented a vibrant message of hope and inspiration in his
keynote address, while Nuttin’ But Stringz’ Damien Escobar excited the crowd with his unique fusion of classical and popular music. The event also featured an amazing perfromance by the Bay Shore High School Step Team. Many thanks to program organizer and Social Studies teacher Ms.

Workshops were presented in both English and Spanish and tailored to grades K-2. TOY MAKING 101 - Bay Shore Middle School offers a unique club that gives students the skills to make and sell toys and then donate the profits to various charities within the community. The Middle School Toy Making Club, established in 2008, meets every week and is advised by technology teacher, Mr. Steve Kaplan. This past holiday season was a particularly busy and profitable time for the club, selling 116 toys and raising over $325. The club provides a great way for the students to learn a new skill, while supporting various establishments in the Bay Shore-Brightwaters community.

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan The more I drive, the more I realize how many truly incompetent motorists there are out there. Let’s start with the basics. If you come out to find snow accumulated on the roof of your car, CLEAN IT OFF. Those of us who have the misfortune of driving behind you would greatly appreciate it. I know you think you’re saving time, but honestly, they make rear windows transparent for a reason…you know, just in case you want to take a quick peek back there every now and then. Once on the road, let’s review a few pointers… Shoulders of the road were made for the purpose of easing into and out of traffic while merging. Trust me, it’s a much better alternative than
practically standing on your brakes while in the right traffic lane as you suddenly realize your exit is approaching – oh, in 3 feet or so. Same goes for merging onto a major highway or parkway. Do not assume that the lane is clear for you to simply sail right through at 60 mph. There are occasionally, you know, other vehicles already inhabiting that space. Then there are those scenarios that are simply so bizarre, they are beyond words. A few weeks ago, I was stopped at a light on the Service Road of the LIE. As I waited in the left hand turning lane, a truck opposite me in the right hand lane, I noticed a car approach in the middle lane, “driven” by a man staring intently at the map spread across his steering wheel. Suddenly, he apparently
decided that he needed to be somewhere else, and proceeded to back up on the Service Road and cut his wheel, angling his car toward this aforementioned truck in the right lane…all the while, never shifting his gaze from the map. With a mix of horror and amusement, I watched the scene unfold. I glanced at the truck driver, to see him absolutely hysterical with laughter, shaking his head in amazement. The light turned green at that point, spurring me to get out of there before witnessing Act II of this particular play. No telling what the next move might have been! Let’s all focus people. And not on our maps, please. The road. Only the road. And for goodness sake, invest in a snowbrush.

A pair of first-place finishers – one boy and one girl – in each grade received custom gold medals and T-shirts and advanced to a townwide final competition against other Nassau and Suffolk winners. The two runners-up were given silver medals and all of the student competitors were presented with participant’s certificates. JFK’s fifth-grade winners for 2013 were Alyssa Levy and Mike Ruhrold, while Meghan Garnett and Mitchell Meyers finished first for the fourth grade. Mia Catalanotto, Sophia Nelson, Connor Parkan and Ryan Thompson finished in second place at JFK. First-place winners at RCK were fifth-graders Patrick Colleary and Julianna Longo and fourthgraders Ryan Ferremi and Lillian Scholl. Finishing in second place for fifthgraders at RCK were Sean Colleary and Christina

The Sharpshooter challenge, sponsored since 1993 by Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs along with cosponsors Southside Hospital, the Islip Elks and the Town of Islip Housing Authority, encourages children in local public and private schools to improve their basketball skills while serving as an alternative to drug and alcohol abuse. Taking place during physical education classes, the competition permits each student to attempt to score as many baskets as possible in one minute, choosing from designated shooting spots on the gym floor, with each spot worth a differing point value.

Suffolk County Legislator Rick Montano has, once again, partnered with Long Island Cares, Inc. – The Harry Chapin Food Bank to participate in the 2nd Annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge, to raise food for needy Long Islanders. There are over 300,000 thousand Long Islanders who are food insecure each year. Community organizations, such as Long Island Cares become an integral part assisting people in procuring food. “I encourage all members of the community to participate in this food and supplies drive,” said Montano. “On Long Island, we have seen a sharp increase in the number of individuals asking for assistance since the economic downturn,” he added. Proceeds of the drive will go towards the organization’s mission to eliminate hunger and continue assisting the families displaced by Superstorm Sandy. The deadline for donations is Friday, March 29th. Legislator Montano’s office is located at Courthouse Corporate Center, 320 Carleton Avenue, Suite 4300 in Central Islip.
