Bay Shore’s Fifth Avenue School, the First Baptist Church of Bay Shore and the Rotary Club of Bay Shore continue to work together on the Partners To Potential beforeschool tutoring program, sponsored by Long Island Youth Guidance. This program helps children learn to read,

believe in themselves, and develop both socially and emotionally. The Partners To Potential program targets students who are struggling academically and matches them with thoroughly screened volunteers. Each volunteer spends one morning a week with their child, helping to

strengthen their reading skills. In addition, each student develops a friendship with a positive role model who inspires them to do well and reach their potential! Many thanks to Program Coordinators Virginia Bull, Kimberly SaultersYork and Donna Gerardi.

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything. Reality is secondary. Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts. Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question. I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

shades of gray along the way. Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it? I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger. In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately. What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed. Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell. And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

High Kicking To First Place

The Islip High School kickline team competed at the Long Island Kickline Association competition held on February 24th at Uniondale High School. For the first time since they began competing, the team placed in all

three categories in which they competed. The Lady Buccaneers took the top spot in the dance category with their African dance and placed second in both the hip-hop and high kick categories. Coached by Kerri

Special Mass

Hundreds of attendees filled the pews at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre on March 10th for a special Mass of Celebration to mark the 100th Anniversary of Mercy Medical Center. Established on the Feast of St. Patrick, March 17th, 1913 in a 13-bed former sanitarium in Hempstead by the Congregation of the Infant Jesus, the Nursing Sisters of the Sick Poor, Mercy has grown and developed over the

decades into one of Nassau County’s leading medical institutions. The mass was celebrated by the Most Reverend William Murphy, Bishop of Rockville Centre, who expressed thanks for the century of compassionate care made possible at Mercy by the hard work and dedication of not only the hospital’s physicians, nurses and support staff, but also The Friends of Mercy and the Council of Leagues

auxiliary organizations, community residents and the continuing inspiration provided by the members of the founding Congregation. Among those in attendance were six leaders of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR) on Long Island in recognition of Mercy’s Century of Compassionate Caring and its witness to Catholic health care.

In recognition of The Fresh Air Fund’s 137th summer of bringing together New York City children and volunteer host families in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has recognized March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of inner-city boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy New York City streets to enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country! Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children for one or two weeks or more in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience – for both the child and

your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the star-filled skies.” Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host. Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. Firsttime Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range

from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million innercity children since 1877. For more information about becoming a Fresh Air volunteer host, please call Joan Giusto at 631.683.4010 or The Fresh Air Fund at 1.800367.0003. Visit The Fresh Air Fund online at www. freshair.org.

reports, as they were restricted in regards to the length.” The fifth-graders were also given the option of choosing their own visual component to accompany the report. Some of the graphic elements they used were wanted posters, models, timelines and even costumes embodying people featured in the books. They were then required to present their written reports and their visual components to their classmates, who proved to be an active, engaged and respectful audience. “The class found the books incredibly interesting and the students now look at the genre of nonfiction in a completely different light,” said Chiarelli. “They even felt the desire to learn more about some of the topics.”

East Islip students have once again excelled in the annual PTA Reflections arts contest, led by middle schooler Kerri Kolensky, who won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence In Literature from the Suffolk Region PTA, and Spencer Kavanagh of John F. Kennedy Elementary School, who won the Suffolk County Award of Excellence in Music Composition. Kolensky’s and Kavanagh’s entries both on the theme of “The Magic of a Moment,” not only achieved victory on the county level, but also won during the next round of judging at the New York State PTA level. They both will be recognized at the state PTA convention in November. “The PTA Reflections program was described by its founder, Mary Lou Anderson, as almost too simple,” said Linda Hillman, the East Islip Middle School PTA

Reflections chairperson. “That simplicity – of asking children to express themselves artistically based on a common theme – is the foundation of this longstanding PTA program.” Students participating in PTA Reflections submit artwork to their local PTAs, where the works are judged at the local level. The winning entries advance to the county, then to the state. Top state award-winning entries advance to the national level of judging. “This year we had over 100 student participants districtwide,” said Hillman. “We had winners move onto judging at the Suffolk County level in all categories ranging in age from kindergarten through high school.” Three other district Reflections winners were selected from East Islip at the county level and moved on to judging at the state level: Emily Jean White at Connetquot Elementary in Photography, Paige

Suffolk Zone 3 - NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - Wednesday March 20, 2013

Students in Robert Chiarelli’s fifth-grade class at Connetquot Elementary in Islip Terrace recently explored the world of nonfiction books, expanding their knowledge and entertaining their peers with book reports and visual projects in a nod to the new Common Core State Standards, which emphasize familiarizing the students with nonfiction texts and having them determine the pertinent information that the books contain. After the class discussed the features of nonfiction

text, each individual student was given the option of choosing any book on any topic that he or she wanted to learn more about, with topics ranging from people and places to specific events. Chiarelli also strongly encouraged them to choose topics that they had no prior knowledge of. The reports had to address the format and the author’s style in delivering the detailed information contained in the selected book. The students were required to paraphrase the specific evidence from their books and organize the structure of their report in a similar but condensed manner. “My students agreed that the text was difficult at times to understand,” said Chiarelli. “They needed to be selective and to make educated decisions as to what information to include within their

Along with Kolensky and Kavanagh, they will be presented with certificates from the Suffolk Region PTA at the annual Reflections Showcase in April. Other East Islip Middle School students honored for their work in the 2012 Reflections contest were Sarah Bloom and Gregory Cassiano, both winners of the schoollevel Award of Excellence in Literature; Thomas Allen, Raymond Betances and Angela Loizides, who won the Award of Merit in Literature; and Edmund Martorella, given the Award of Excellence in Photography. The East Islip Middle School National Junior Honor Society participated in the Aeropostale Teens for Jeans campaign during January and early February in an effort to help provide needed jeans for teens in area homeless shelters. The school donated 366 pairs of washed, gently used jeans, which were then driven to the local

Aeropostale outlet at the South Shore Mall in Bay Shore. For each pair of jeans donated, students were entered in a schoolwide raffle for a gift basket, and Aeropostale provided a 25 percent off coupon for a new pair of jeans for each pair the middle school donated. On a national level, the

company will award $5,000 prizes to the top collecting elementary, middle and high schools, and the top collecting Canadian school. The school that collects the most jeans will win a grand prize of $10,000, a party and Aeropostale hoodies customized with the school’s name.

The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be recognizing the achievements of many of our outstanding and talented high school students at the annual Student Achievement Awards Celebration. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Board Room at 655 Main Street, Islip, NY. This year achievement awards will be presented to students in grades 9

through 12 who have made significant contributions to the community or who have excelled in a specific academic area. All public and private high schools within the Town of Islip are invited to submit nominations. To nominate a student, schools must submit a Nomination Form and it must be received by Friday, March 22, 2013. Nomination Forms and Criteria sheets have been mailed to all schools within the Town and are also

available via the Town’s website, www.townofislipny.gov. Nominations can either be mailed back to the Division of Cultural Affairs and Senior Citizen Services, 401 Main Street, Room 227, Islip, NY 11751 faxed to 631.224.5316, or e-mailed to jgabriel@ townofislip-ny.gov. The event, which has been held the last three years, aims to break the world record for the largest simultaneous “Thriller” dance while collecting food and monetary donations for charity. 100 Ways To Celebrate

The Music Man

Winter Storm Nemo may have forced a rescheduling to February 12th and 13th, but it couldn’t dampen East Islip Middle School’s young thespians’ enthusiasm and theatrical ambitions as they put on two superlative performances of Meredith Willson’s 1957 Broadway smash The Music Man. Based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey, “The Music Man” tells the story of a con man, Harold Hill, who pretends to be a bandleader selling uniforms and instruments to scam unsuspecting townsfolk. When he arrives in River City, Iowa, he and librarian Marian Paroo fall in love, complicating his scheme. The original show ran for 1,375 performances, winning five Tony Awards (including Best Musical), claiming the very first Grammy Award for “Best Original Cast Album,” and spurring a 1962 film adaption. Its popularity continues to

the present day, pleasing countless audiences, and East Islip’s junior version proved no exception. “The students all worked very hard and pulled together to bring this allAmerican show to life,” said director/choreographer Jenna Wolf. “I could not be prouder of them.” Wolf and Linda Hillman’s colorful costuming and the impressive set design by Daniel Figliozzi helped set a special mood, while accompanist Phillip Lopinto and soundman Doug Rowand ensured the audio was stellar. The cast included Connor Barnes as Harold Hill, Sarah Bloom as Marion Paroo, Angelina Parisi as Mrs. Paroo, Sarah Hillman as Winthrop Paroo, Nikolas Perez as Marcellus Washburn, Gregory Cassiano as Mayor Shinn, Amanda Carey as Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn, James Daley as Tommy Djilas, Julia DiCarlo as

Zaneeta Shinn, Emily Vazquez as Gracie Shinn, Dominique Degener as Amaryllis, Jordan Rant as Charlie Cowell, Nicole Surace as the Constable, and Madison Lane as the Conductor. Also appearing in the production were Alexa Benitez, Jenna Donnelly, Karina Gallagher, Elizabeth Hillman, Nicole O’Connor, Angelina Perrone and Katelyn Spina as the Pick-a-little Ladies; Claudia Banville, Amanda Baranek, Cassandra Manfredi and Stephanie Milito as the Barbershop Quartet; James Daley, Michael Vito Perrone, Katrina Shea, Cassidy Triolo and Meghan Walsh as Travelling Salesmen; Kristen Bayreuther, Caroline Buckley, Sophia Gerace, Cristina Maher, Jessica Muroff and Erica Sciallo as Teen Girls; and Emily Mahoney, Nicole Muroff and Annie Nastasi as Kids.

Students in Heather Safo and Jessica Sauers’ secondgrade class celebrated the 100th day of school by participating in several activities focused on the number 100. In math, they read and answered clues about number value and place value to identify and color specific numbers on a hundreds chart and reveal a secret picture. In science,

they estimated how many minutes and seconds it would take to jump 100 times, where 100 steps outside of their classroom door would take them, how many inches tall would 100 stacked pennies measure and how much liquid would 100 drops of water be. They worked in groups to compare their estimates with the actual results. During Writer’s

Workshop throughout the week, the secondgraders used the writing process to create written paragraphs describing their predictions about life when they are 100 years old. At the end of the 100th day, the class celebrated by creating a 100th day snack with their friends from SCOPE.

John F. Kennedy Elementary in the East Islip School District kicked off the Parents as Reading Partners program – its 2013 theme is “JFK School Spirit” – with a threeday spring book fair from February 5th through 7th. During the book fair, local author and JFK parent Barbara Prignano visited the school and brought not only her books to read, but announced a special

“What’s The Title?” contest. Participating students were asked to create a title for the next book she will be writing. Fourth-grader Dylan Purdy was chosen as the contest winner for his original title, The Tiny Tomato and His Terrific Manners, which will be the name of Prignano’s next literary creation. “We have such a dedicated Book Fair Committee and group of volunteers

that always make our book fairs wonderful,” said Susan Kavanagh, PTA vice president at JFK. “This year, with Barbara’s contest, we had something extra special planned.” Prignano’s next book signing appearance takes place March 23rd at Book Revue in Huntington. Visit her website for further SONS INSTALLATION - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended details. the annual installation dinner for the Order Sons of Italy in America Sgt. SOUTH BAY SUCCESS STORY! TROOPER, the Poodle who had his eye surgically removed after being hit by a car in Wyandanch, was recently adopted. A lovely family saw him in South Bay - he looked just like their Bichon mix that had died. They called Babylon Shelter and were told he had been moved to Last Hope. The family rushed right down to Wantagh and, after going through the adoption process, took Trooper home. He is doing wonderfully with their other Bichons, kids, everyone... he fit right in! The youngest children in the Connetquot Elementary School student body – firstgraders from Lesia Virga and Elizabeth McInerney’s class and kindergartners from Moira Timmer’s class – heralded the arrival of spring and Music in Our Schools Month with the enchanting original musical The Mitten. Adapted for the stage by Connetquot music teacher Eileen Egbert, The Mitten is based on Jan Brett’s 1989 story of the same name. In this version of a Ukrainian folk tale, animals of varying sizes huddle into a found mitten to keep warm. The white mitten continues to stretch to accommodate the woodland creatures, until a tiny mouse hops on a bear’s nose. The mouse’s whiskers cause the bear to sneeze, propelling all the animals out of the mitten. The owner of the lost mitten, the character Nikki, brings his stretched-out mitten back to his Baba (the grandmother) as the snow falls. “In keeping with the Common Core

State Standards, the students learned the story through reading the book,” explained Egbert. “Mathematics, science and music were all incorporated into this lesson.” Singing in a variety of languages (including English, Spanish, Turkish and Russian), the students brought the play’s various characters to life, including snowflake narrators and over half a dozen different forest animals.

“The children’s performances were grand and spectacular,” remarked Principal Deborah Smith, who proudly attended the March 1 production. Noting the fact that the kindergarten students were making their Connetquot stage debut, she said, “They performed with style and real theatrical presence. Another fabulous grade full of talented students enthralled their peers with their acting.”
