Autism Seminar Set Scheduled this year to coincide with Autism Awareness Month, The Flying Point Foundation for Autism has again joined forces with Southampton Hospital and the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services to bring a seminar to Long Island that will help first responders and others not usually accustomed to interacting with those with autism better understand and react to the special circumstances that can arise in an emergency situation. This year two seminars will be offered. The first is geared toward first responders and firefighters but is equally as relevant to anyone who might have to interact with an individual with autism in a tense situation. It was created by a Massachusetts firefighter who is also the father of a son with autism and featured on NBC’s Today show. It will be presented by Jason Dorval, also a

firefighter and the father of child with autism. The second, similar to the first seminar, is geared toward law enforcement, security, school support and hospital support personnel. Both will be held at Hampton Bays Middle School on Saturday, April 6th. The first starting at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 1 p.m. Dorval, a certified public fire and life safety instructor and presenter for the Autism Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC), will discuss identifying characteristics of behaviors of a person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder, the fastest growing neurobiological condition in the world. A person with ASD has an impaired ability to communicate, which can result in a high risk call for responders. The seminar will discuss special tactics, rescue techniques and how to effectively communicate with a person with ASD, as well as ways to build relationships with the ASD community.

“As a parent of a child with autism and a firefighter, I know firsthand that working with a developmentally disabled child can be challenging. Their lack of understanding, limited communication, and other special needs can be a huge problem in an emergency situation. This course will prepare first responders to better understand these individuals and react accordingly,” said Dorval. Flying Point Foundation founder Kim Covell said the feedback from last year’s seminar was so positive that it was important to offer it a second time and expand its scope to include anyone who might interact with individuals with autism. The county has again approved first responders receiving three hours noncore professional credit for taking the seminar, added Covell. “The techniques and tools that each responder will learn in this seminar will be helpful to the

patient, as well the provider by instilling confidence that he or she will be able to handle any situation that arises,” said Tom Lateulere, chief of education and training for the Suffolk County EMS Division. The seminars are open to anyone who wishes to learn more about communicating with an individual with autism in a special situation. First responders who wish to obtain credit for attending the course should register through the Suffolk County Department of Health Services, Division of Emergency Medical Services at 631.852.5800. Peer To Peer Program Launched Suffolk County is one of four municipalities in New York State who have implemented a pilot program named in honor of PFC Joseph Dwyer, a Suffolk County resident who joined the Army after 9/11 and was deployed to Iraq. PFC Dwyer suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lost his battle with PTSD. The park will be open Thursday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the month of April. From May 1st to May 21st, the Game Farm will be open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. From alligators to zebra and scores of animals in between, the Long Island Game Farm has many interactive areas where guests can touch and, unlike most zoos, actually feed the animals! Season Kickoff

On March 15th, close to 300 of Long Island’s best high school students convened at Dowling College in Oakdale, to take part in the 4th Annual Long Island Youth Summit. Participants of the Summit presented possible solutions to a variety of problems ranging from protection of water and open space to racial and economic inequalities to teenage abuse of prescription drugs. Student finalists, who submitted original research projects in the form of essays, artwork and videos, attended the half-day Summit, where they worked with top experts to explore solutions for Long Island. The Summit is a publicprivate partnership between Dowling College, the North Shore-LIJ Health System, Citizens Campaign for the Environment, Vision Long Island and participating high school districts on Long Island, with students from 21 school districts in both Suffolk and Nassau counties submitting

original research projects to the Summit Winner Selection Committee. On the day of the conference, winners received awards in every Summit topical category. In addition, students received awards for best science research paper, best original video, best original art, best original photo art, and the overall top prize of Best Project of the 2013 Long Island Youth Summit. Summit award winners are listed below. “We had a very productive day where the current generation of leaders worked with the future generation of leaders,” said Dr. Nathalia Rogers, cochair of the Long Island Youth Summit Steering Committee and director of the American Communities Institute at Dowling College. “The purpose of the Summit is to work with the brightest high school students to further their analytical and leadership abilities for the benefit of Long Island’s future. Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

To assist with that, Legacy and Pfizer have developed a downloadable, userfriendly guide for health care providers to help them discuss smoking and tobacco use with their patients. Here are hints to help: • Talk openly about smoking. Ask every patient if they smoke. This may open the door to successful intervention. • Be positive and encouraging. Smokers are often dealing with shame or fear of quitting. Congratulate the smoker on the decision to quit and reiterate how you are there to help them on their journey. • Encourage smokers not to give up. Smoking is a chronic, relapsing medical condition; the average smoker tries to quit 6/9 times in their lifetime.

Remind smokers that quitting is difficult, but can be attainable. • Make sure smokers understand smoking for what it really is: a treatable medical condition. • Suggest patients consider evidence-based treatments, such as overthe-counter or prescription medications, and refer them to counseling to help them quit. Patients can call the national toll-free quitline, (800)-QUIT-NOW, for free counseling or seek help from no-cost websites such as www.BecomeAnEX.org. • Arrange follow-up contact as necessary to try to prevent relapse. More than 45 million Americans currently smoke and an estimated 70 percent of them want to quit, but lack the tools to do so. Committing to quit is the crucial first step toward becoming smoke free. Speaking with your health care provider can help you during this process.

Green spaces are more than just pretty spaces; it has a real effect both psychologically and physically on a child’s life! On Thursday night, March 14th, over 60 business leaders, civic leaders, educators and environmentalists attended the Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids (LINCK), a project of The Early Years Institute, 1st Annual Celebrate Green Friendraiser honoring environmental author, Angela de Caprariis-Salerno and artist, Harriet Carotenuto, who authored the book entitled for LINCK, What If There Was No Color Green? The event was

held at the Planting Fields Arboretum, in Oyster Bay, which also included a reading of the book to all attendees. Research shows when children spend time in nature it improves their overall health by increasing physical activity, enhancing creativity, reducing stress levels and acts as a support mechanism for attention disorders. According to Trish Manzi, Director of LINCK, “When children spend unstructured time in nature it is one of the best cure-alls for whatever ails them. It’s one of the best things to include in a child’s life – and it’s free!“ All proceeds from the event and book sale will

be dedicated to the Long Island Nature Collaborative for Kids programs that promote healthy lifestyles and outdoor play for all young children. The Early Years Institute, a regional nonprofit organization based in Plainview, serves as a catalyst for community partnerships and innovations to ensure all young children, ages 0-8, have the opportunities they need to succeed in school and life. The Guilds of Good Samaritan recently presented a check for $60,000 to The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to support the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED) and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). procedure. The Guild’s donation will also support the renovation of the hospital’s ICU waiting area. Grant Boosts Book Collection

Bay Shore Schools Brook Avenue students are enjoying new books purchased with money from the Laura Bush Grant, awarded last June. The generous $5,000 grant was able to help the library in a variety of capacities. Foremost, it

was designated to update and expand the entire collection. It is especially responsible for our ability to increase and broaden the scope of our Spanish and Bilingual books. The timing was fortuitous, too, as the nonfiction needs elaborated

by the Common Core Learning Standards were able to be addressed. Once again, Brook Avenue extends thanks to the Laura Bush Foundation for the positive and significant impact to our library and school.

Syosset Hospital chefs sliced their way through the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Ultimate Chef Healthy Entrée Challenge competition on Thursday, placing first in the second annual cooking competition for their filet mignon marinated in chili pepper, tequila and lime juice with wild rice and celery root as well as a mango and jicama salsa dish. “It’s a great validation to be recognized for the meals we prepare at Syosset Hospital and for providing nutritious and tasty dishes to our patients,” said Syosset Hospital chef Russell Ficke, who took home the top prize along with chef Xavier Haynes. Mr. Haynes noted, “All of the chefs served up inventive meals today. It’s fun to have a day like this with some friendly competition that also shows off our quality work throughout the health system.” During last year’s competition, Syosset Hospital took third place. Chefs Aneesah Cox and Natrell Fisher from Staten Island University Hospital

took second place this year for their chipotlerubbed pork tenderloin with garlic brown rice pilaf, curry yogurt sauce, mango chutney and collard greens. Lenox Hill chefs Patricia Sobol and Johnny Beniquez were in third place with their shrimp dish that had a tomato saffron broth and a parsnip and celery root puree; chefs from Lenox Hill were in second place last year. Chefs from 13 of North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals and facilities diced, sautéed and blanched at Glen Cove Hospital’s Pratt Auditorium during the competition to create tasty, appealing and healthful dishes. The competition, which was held during National Nutrition Month, helps to show that hospital food can not only be healthful but it also surpasses the stereotypes of being bland and boring. During the competition, chefs had access to a pantry, stove top burners and a farmers’ market. Each team was given 45 minutes to make a nutritious and delicious meal that was rated by three judges -- Adrian

Ashby, an administrative associate at North ShoreLIJ who competed on Food Network’s “Chopped”; Joyce Shukri, RD, a healthcare specialist at Sysco Foods; and Robert Graham, MD, a physician at Lenox Hill Hospital who specializes in complementary and integrated medical therapies. All of the dishes had to be no more than 500 calories, 15 grams of fat and 600 milligrams of sodium; health system registered dieticians evaluated these recipes. “People may not realize this but our patients often enjoy the food we prepare at our facilities and rank it alongside that of restaurants,” said Michael Kiley, director of nutrition and food services at Glen Cove Hospital and chair of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s chef committee. He also organized the cooking competition. “Events such as this show that our staff can prepare diverse, tasty and nutritious meals for our patients to savor when they come to our facilities.”

Moody’s Math Challenge

On Saturday, March 2nd, four Bay Shore High School Math whizzes participated in the Moody’s Mega Math Competition, sponsored by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Moody’s Foundation, which aims to promote education, particularly in the fields of mathematics, finance, and economics. The stakes of Moody’s Mega Math Challenge have always been high: thousands of students competing for thousands of dollars in scholarships, not to mention bragging rights, as veteran schools face off against a surge of newcomers eager to prove their credibility. More than 5,800 high schoolers in 29 eastern states registered for this year’s contest, eager to work on this year’s

Challenge Problem: Waste Not, Want Not: Putting Recyclables In Their Place. The competition works like this: teams of 3 to 5 students (Juniors and Seniors only) are given a singular, previously undisclosed Math problem and asked to develop a strategy to solve that problem. Assigned problems tend to involve mathematical modeling and mathematics applied to real world scenarios. The teams are given fourteen hours (from 7 AM to 9 PM) to research, develop their answer and submit a written response that addresses the assigned problem in its entirety. If a team’s answer is selected from among the many submitted, those students will have a chance to present their solution

before a panel of judges, as well as earn money towards college tuition. The Bay Shore High School students competing in this year’s Moody’s Math Competition were Junior Tim Bryant, Senior Emmet Farnan, Senior Patrick Hesselbach, and Junior Mehrab Hoque. These driven students were supervised by Middle School Math teacher Mr. James Carr, who helped prepare the students, supervised their work on the day of the competition (although he was not permitted to help them in any way), and worked as a liaison between the team, our school district and Moody’s. Bay Shore wishes these hard-working students luck as they await the results of their labor.

Camporee Event The Boy Scouts of America, Suffolk County Council will be holding an incredible event for the Scouts of Suffolk County over the weekend of April 26th through 28th. Imagine over 6,000 Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers and adult leaders all gathered together for one big celebration of Scouting. Last held in 2010, to mark the 100th Anniversary of Scouting, the Camporee is a chance to camp out with friends, meet new people, try activities, learn new skills, and enjoy the outdoors. The event is being held at Southaven County Park in Yaphank. “Southaven – 2013” will feature over 200 activities for the participants. The

aquatic area will provide row boating, canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Cub Scout activities will include archery, BB shooting, craft and science stations. Older Boy Scouts will ride BMX bike trails, participate in archery shooting, tomahawk throwing, pioneering and orienteering while camping at the park. In addition to the ageappropriate activities, dozens of Long Island organizations will be set up in the Exhibit Area. Fire and Police departments, military groups and local clubs will be found in the Merit Badge “Midway.” Scouting Museum Exhibits will transport the participants back to the early days of Scouting in

Suffolk County. Patches, mugs, early pictures and uniforms will be on display. Saturday night will conclude with the “Big Show” featuring some great local entertainment and an amazing laser light finale. The entire event will celebrate the spirit of Scouting, which continues to thrive in Suffolk County. Returning to a familiar venue at the Hempstead Golf and Country Club, the March 7th black-tie event honored State Senator Dean G. Skelos, Republican Conference Leader, Temporary President and co-Leader of the State Senate’s historic majority governing coalition. East Islip Middle School held its sixth annual Breakfast of Champions on the morning of March 12th. Honored at the breakfast were sixth- and seventh-grade students who demonstrated the “Six Pillars of Character” during the 2012-13 school year. Each was selected by a team or department at the middle school. After greetings from Assistant Principal Janet Jones, Principal Mark Bernard and Assistant Principal Christian Seifert presented each of the honorees with a

certificate and lanyard. Upon completion of the ceremony, the students, their families and the middle school’s staff members enjoyed sharing breakfast together. Timber Point Elementary School’s student council joined forces with teacher Gail Rhatigan’s morning pre-kindergarten class on March 14th for a St. Patrick’s Day project. Each child in Rhatigan’s class was teamed up with

a fourth- or fifth-grade student council “buddy.” The “big buddies” wrote St. Patrick’s Day cards to their “little buddies” before their meeting. “Everyone was excited and the event was a huge success,” said Rhatigan,

who said that she and student council advisers Rose Behar and Cathy Boudart discussed future collaborative projects between the student council and pre-K students.

New Museum To Be Formed Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and the members of the Islip Town Board are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters (FITF) for the construction and operation of a firefighting museum. The agreement will let FITF establish a public display of antique and modern firefighting equipment that will be open to the public. “Getting this project off the ground has been a passion of mine for some time now,” said Councilman Flotteron. “I believe we have found the perfect location for this facility and the Town Board is proud to contribute this land to the Friends of Islip Town Firemen.”

“This is a long overdue tribute to the extraordinary sacrifice and heroism of the men and women of our fire services,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “They risk their lives and some have perished protecting our families and our community. Islip is proud to be the home of this new landmark.” Ed Tully, speaking on behalf of the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters, said “We are grateful to the Town for allowing us to move ahead with this project. This is something that has been a dream of this organization for a long time, and will be a great resource not just for Islip’s firefighting community, but the Islip community at-large.” The license agreement is in effect for forty-nine

years, but can be renewed during that time. Although situated on Town land, members of FITF will be responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of the public display and the property grounds.

The girls donated a number of gift baskets full of different foods, treats, and toys for each dog and cat at the shelter. “These girls have done an amazing thing, donating to these homeless animals. It makes me proud to see people so young already

Tribute To Veterans

Peter Cerreta, an 88 year old veteran and retiree of NASA was recently honored by The Bristal in Westbury and Genser Dubow Genser & Cona (GDGC), elder law and estate planning law firm in Melville. A resident of the assisted living facility, Peter was joined by his nieces and nephews at the event attended by over 60 people. After suffering a stroke a few years ago, his family relocated him from Virginia to Long Island. “We honored Peter for his contributions and experience during Work War II as well as for his participation in our activities at The Bristal where he always exhibits kindness to residents and staff,” says Anne Madsen, activity director, The Bristal. “Peter loves to go on outings to beaches and parks and helps other residents by carrying coolers and serving food.” Drafted while he was at New York University, he was taught to fly the C46, the largest two-engine cargo plane built by the

U.S. Requiring a team of four to fly the plane, they went all over the world delivering aviation gas and supplies to foreign ports. After discharge from the service, Peter graduated NYU with a degree in Aeronautics. Starting his career at the David Tyler Model Basin, Peter worked with a group that built a trans-sonic wind tunnel and personally tested a Zeppelin airship there. Considered an expert in his field, he worked at NASA testing several rocket designs for the Apollo Space program. In addition to honoring Peter, GDGC and The Bristal presented the four winners of a student art contest entitled “These Colors Don’t Run” with a Visa gift card and certificate. “We sponsored the contest to give youngsters an opportunity to show their creativity in thanking local Veterans and their families for the services they gave to our country,” explains Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq.,

High School on March 10th, where she not only participated in the festival but also earned principal chair of her section. Working together throughout the year as buddy classes, the students sang songs, performed choreography and immersed themselves into their characters. The play tells the story of three sister nanny goats and their determination to cross the bridge in order to find food. Throughout

their journey, the goats are met by their friends – rabbits, butterflies, frogs and foxes – who warn them of the dangerous trolls who control the bridge. Eventually, the three sisters cross the bridge and stand up for themselves against the bully trolls.

Over three days, theater students at Islip High School performed four performances of the classic tale Beauty and the Beast. A tale as old as time, the musical tells the classic story of Belle (portrayed by Leighann Martone) and the Beast (Michael Massaro) as they overcome the odds to fall in love and break the witch’s curse. Leighann and Michael were supported by their fellow actors John Halpin (Gaston), Rosie Turner (Mrs. Potts), Larry

Saperstein (Lumiere), Brianna DiPaola (Chip), Nick Bates (Cogs), Ethan Fields (Maurice), Nick Fanizzi (Lefou), Kaytie Barry (Babbette), Kayla Siuda (the wardrobe), and silly girls Jamie Bider, Elienne Marteluna and Kayleigh Rall. In addition to acting on stage, the students took to performing behind the scenes as they built scenery, helped choreograph the musical numbers, designed the costumes, and acted as

hair and makeup artists. Tale As Old As Time

Town officials today proudly announced an influx of $300,000 in from the Islip Community Development Agency (CDA) dedicated to the capital improvement of Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. Much of the money is slated to be used to make extensive repairs on aging water filtration devices and other aquatic equipment on the pool at Roberto Clemente Park. “Securing these dollars is a critical first step towards rehabilitating this important community resource,” said Councilman John Cochrane, a member of the Islip CDA Board. “While we are still searching for funds to cover the pools operating costs, being able to make the necessary repairs that secure the health and safety of pool

patrons will help ensure the long-term operation of Roberto Clemente Pool. We still have a long way to go, but this is great news.” Roberto Clemente Pool, originally Timberline Pool, opened in 1981 and has endured only basic repairs and maintenance since its opening. In the summer of 2012, Town officials noted that the pool was in urgent need of major repairs to its pump and filtration system, which were scheduled to take place over the winter and spring. Unfortunately funding, time and labor needed to make such repairs had to be reallocated after Islip Town is faced with nearly $28 million in repairs and mitigations costs to its parks system. “My thanks go to John Cochrane who worked who worked hard to secure this
