Strength for Life is a grassroots nonprofit providing FREE exercise classes and wellness retreats for cancer patients/survivors on Long Island.

On April 17th at the Selden Campus and April 18th at the Brentwood Campus from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. spin instructors held classes every hour to benefit Strength for Life.

The Founders of Strength for Life, graduates of the Fitness Specialist Program at SCCC Ammerman Campus, are blessed to be chosen as the beneficiary of this 2013 event.

The Department of Physical Education on each campus organized the event and did an outstanding job of promotion to support the Strength for Life organization and the programs offered at NO COST to cancer survivors.

Women volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk during the sixth annual National Women Build Week or those who just want to support the cause can get a head start on learning key construction skills and tips. Lowe’s will host two “how-to” clinics for women in preparation of National Women Build Week, an initiative of Habitat’s Women Build program developed in partnership with Lowe’s.

Habitat’s Women Build program empowers women to get actively involved with Habitat’s mission to help families in need of safe, decent and affordable housing.

“We are looking forward to National Women Build Week and the opportunity to engage more women in our work,” said Diane Burke, interim president of Habitat Suffolk. “We invite women of all construction levels to join us on the build site and/ or take the clinics hosted by Lowe’s.”

The clinics are open to women who are interested in learning key construction

Audition Now High school students from Nassau and Suffolk counties with dreams of becoming actors, dancers, playwrights, painters, sculptors, musicians, filmmakers, singers or lighting designers are encouraged to audition for the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), consistently voted Bethpage Best Arts School since 2011.

Part of the public school system, LIHSA is conveniently located at a state-of-the-art facility in Syosset where students in grades 9-12 have the opportunity to attend either a half- or fullday program. Students receive professional-level training in art, dance, drama, theatre technology, instrumental or vocal music, musical theatre,

film or playwriting each day as a supplement to their regular course of study.

Students can compose and create original works in the school’s cuttingedge Digital Media and Production Lab. Teens who exercise the half-day option spend part of the day at LIHSA and the remainder of their time in their home district completing academic

requirements.

Students who elect the full-day option complete all requirements for obtaining their Regents or Advanced Regents diploma at LIHSA. A broad spectrum of opportunities is available to students interested in studying the arts. A staff consisting of teachers and practicing professional artists prepares the students for auditions,

helps with portfolio selections and steers students toward specialized awards and honors.

More than 98 percent of the graduates go on to colleges or conservatories.

Eighty-three graduates from the class of 2012 collectively earned more than $6.5 million in scholarships and grants, and are now attending some of the most

prestigious schools in the country.

Auditions are being held now through June.

Professors Named Fellows Two Stony Brook University professors – Leonardo Rastelli, PhD and Sheila Silver, PhD – have been named 2013 Guggenheim Fellows based on distinguished achievement in the past and exceptional promise for the future. The fellowships, often called “midcareer” awards, are intended for men and women who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts.

In the 89th annual John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation competition for the United States and Canada, Rastelli, Associate Professor in the Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Department of Physics and Astronomy, and Silver, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor, Department of

Music, were selected as part of a diverse group of 175 scholars, artists, and scientists on the basis of prior achievement and exceptional promise. They were chosen from among almost 3,000 applicants.

Rastelli, who was selected for the fellowship in the category of Natural Sciences, received his PhD in 2000 from MIT. He was a postdoc and Assistant Professor at Princeton before joining Stony Brook in 2006. He works on string theory and quantum field theory.

“I am very honored by this recognition,” Rastelli said. “I am both proud and intimidated to appear in the same list as the illustrious colleagues who received the fellowship before.”

Superconformal Bootstrap Program. “The general idea of the ‘bootstrap’ is that physical theories must obey stringent consistency conditions,” Rastelli said. “In collaboration with a very talented group of students and postdocs, I plan to apply the modern bootstrap program to theories that have a high degree of symmetry; they are both conformal (which means that they have no intrinsic length scale) and supersymmetric. Supersymmetry is a symmetry that relates ‘bosons’ and ‘fermions.’ It is a very powerful symmetry – many important discoveries about it were made at Stony Brook. This approach gives insight into certain aspects of physical theories for which no other computational scheme is available.”

Silver was selected in the field of Creative Arts/Music Composition. She has written in a wide range of mediums, from solo instrumental works to large orchestral works; from opera to feature film scores. For the past few years, Silver has been composing primarily for the voice and for opera. In 2007 she received the Raymond and Beverly Sackler Prize in Music Composition for Opera to compose her opera, The Wooden Sword, which premiered in 2010.

Also premiering in 2010 was The White Rooster, A Tale of Compassion, commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Freer and Sackler Galleries for the exhibit In the Realm of the Buddha, a dramatic cantata composed for the vocal ensemble Tapestry, plus six Tibetan singing bowls and frame drums. She is now completing Beauty Intolerable, a Songbook based on the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay, composed in collaboration with American Opera Projects and the Edna St. Vincent Millay Society, which will premiere this June in New York City.

Her Guggenheim Fellowship was awarded for work on her next opera, A Thousand Splendid Suns, based on the international best-selling novel by Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner. In May, Silver will begin, with her family, a six-month stay in Pune, India, studying Hindustani music in preparation for beginning her new opera. She will study Hindustani music with master singer, Narayan Bodas, and also will study the tabla, a percussion instrument used in Hindustani classical music. “I want my Western voice to have some of the color – feel – of Hindustani music because this is at the heart of Afghan music,” she said. While in India, Silver also will be working with her librettist, Stephen Kitsakos, Professor of Theater at SUNY New Paltz, to complete the first draft of the opera’s libretto.

Since its establishment in 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has granted over $306 million in Fellowships to more than 17,500 individuals, among whom are scores of Nobel laureates, poets laureate, winners of Pulitzer Prizes, Fields Medals, and of other important, internationally recognized honors.

“These artists and writers, scholars and scientists, represent the best of the best,” Edward Hirsch, president of the Foundation, said of the 175 new Guggenheim fellows. “Since 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has always bet everything on the individual, and we’re thrilled to continue the tradition with this wonderfully talented and diverse group. It’s an honor to be able to support these individuals to do the work they were meant to do.”

The Crisis Center, the 24 hour-a-day, 7 day-a-week suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline,

is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in its upcoming Counselor Assistant Training Program. No experience is necessary and the hours are flexible (around-theclock) to accommodate the individual needs of volunteers.

The free, comprehensive orientation training program takes place over 3 three-hour sessions at the Crisis Center’s office in

This one-day event is part of a year-long effort, the “Wear It!” North American Safe Boating Campaign, which brings together boating safety partners across the U.S. and Canada to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wearing of life jackets.

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadron – a national organization of boating enthusiast, who provide safe boating courses to the public as a way to make the waterways safer for all – will be sponsoring a local “Ready, Set, Wear It” event on the same day – Saturday, May 18, 2013, beginning at 11am in the parking lot of Captain Bill’s Seafood Restaurant, 122 Ocean Ave Bay Shore, NY 11706. The public, elected officials, community leaders, local fire departments, and the United States Power Squadron Members are asked to bring their life jacket down to this event to be part of a photo shoot to bring awareness to safe boating for this upcoming boating season.

Boaters from across the U.S.A. will gather on this same day to inflate their own inflatable life jacket or to wear an inherently buoyant life jacket, helping to heighten awareness of different life jacket types and boating safety issues an go for a world’s record along the way.

“The importance of the proper use of life jackets or PFD’s (Personal Flotation Devices) cannot be emphasized enough. This ambitious project not only includes a new home and added classroom capacity at the school for 24 children with Autism, but includes sorely needed renovations to the school building, which is over 50 years old. New handicap accessibility, an HVAC system upgrade, roof replacement, lighting upgrades and various

other improvements to increase the energyefficiency of the school building will be included in the work.

Long Island’s third annual All Kids Fair took place on Sunday, April 28th at the Melville Marriott - Long Island to a crowd of almost 800.

The All Kids Fair, a day celebrating childhood, was part activities and education expo and part health and wellness fair.

There were 24 fun and interesting classes at the All Kids Fair, including Travel with Kids, College Funding, Potty Training, Sports, Martial Arts, Music, and Archery.

85 exhibitors offered information about topics as diverse as nutrition, after school activities, camps, tutoring, fun places to play, dental care, and special needs topics. A clown from the Big Apple Circus juggled and entertained.

Many products were sold as well, including kids’ furniture and books. One attendee wrote in the online survey that “I liked the fact that the fair engaged the children as well as myself.”

A food drive, organized

by The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) raised $150 and over 100 pounds of food to feed Long

Island’s hungry.

Those who donated received raffle tickets to win great prizes, including a birthday party at Pump It Up and Long Island Ducks tickets.

Penelope’s Odyssey offered simple cheek swabs for the lifesaving National Bone Marrow Registry, and 26 altruistic people were swabbed. Lori Schneider of Penelope’s Odyssey shared that she “enjoyed the day and all the people we met.

I am amazed at how many wonderful businesses and organizations you had represented.” Many other non-profits participated, including the Mid Island Y-JCCs, YMCA of Long Island, the American Airpower Museum, Strong Island Kids and Family Service League – Project Hope, who assisted those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

Attendees enjoyed free food samples from Mulberry Street of Babylon Village, Blondees Bistro, Black Forest Brew Haus, Love and Quiches, and Lucky Lou’s Rice Pudding.

and mini-massages for the adults were available from a variety of exhibitors. A new addition this year was a babysitting room, which was free with admission.

The fair, organized as a celebration of kids – all kids - was designed to bring together businesses, vendors, and non-profit organizations with children from birth through high school age, along with the people who love them.

East Islip Middle School’s student-musicians excelled at this year’s Suffolk County Music Educators’ Association SCMEA Division II West All-County Festival. The event, held at Elwood Middle School, showcased the most talented band, chorus and orchestra students in the seventh and eighth grades from schools all over western Suffolk County.

After three days of extensive rehearsals with their guest conductors, the three groups – band, chorus and orchestra – were ready to perform at the March 10th concert.

The orchestra, led

by Kristin Benson and featuring East Islip’s James Daley (viola), Nicole Humpf (cello), Skylar Pipitone (cello), Samantha Smith (violin) and Devin Thelemann (bass), performed Odyssey, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, 1st Movement, Moondance and To Tame The Raging Rapids.

On Earth Day itself, the bags were passed out to shoppers at Stop & Shop in Islip Terrace.

“The people in the neighborhood got a very clear and positive message that the students at the middle school care about

East Islip High School’s Environment Green Career Academy students and teachers hosted their 5th Annual Earth Day Celebration on April 5th, showcasing the school’s new 3,500-watt photovoltaic solar system.

The multifaceted fivehour event included an all-day variety talent festival in the courtyard, complete with traditional mascot frogs and popular performances by studentmusicians like Alexandra Konnerth, Jacob Levesque and Brandi Smigiel (the latter two comprising the duo On the Corner of Who & What), recycling games for visiting middle school classes, and a special “Stump the Solar Guy” game with Solar Dad and Sons President Ken Sanger. Tom Barry held woodcarving demonstrations in the front lobby while Home Performance Technology demonstrated thermal

imaging. Over 30 different environmental exhibitors held court in the auxiliary gym, promoting new technology and ways students can help save the environment, including the Department of Environmental Protection, It’s My Bag, Keep Islip Clean, Seatuck, Sierra Club and the Town of Islip Office of Recycling.

With Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi and Islip Town Councilman Anthony S. Senft Jr. in attendance, the very first East Islip Earth Day tree was planted in honor of the Environment Green Career Academy’s fifth anniversary.

“Once again, this Earth Day event was a huge success and the business vendors were very pleased with the way the Environment Green students handled all of the events of the day,” said East Islip High School Guidance Director Israel

Malinowitzer, the head of the Career Academy.

“The entertainment and the use of the courtyard added much pleasure and a ray of sunshine.

We are very grateful to Mark Gunthner of Home Performance Technology for his continued support from day one of the establishment of the Environment Green Career Academy program. I would like to thank Ken Sanger of Solar Dad and Sons for his support and for installing the photovoltaic solar system in the courtyard as well as providing the students with information on how the system works.

The East Islip School District annual budget vote and board election on May 21st will be held this year at one polling place, the Early Childhood Center at 1 Craig B. Gariepy Avenue. in Islip Terrace, in the first-floor cafeteria and gymnasium. Voting will take place from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Parking will be available in the front of the building and in the rear parking lot between the ECC and the middle school.

In prior years, the voting had been broken down into four separate voting districts, one at each of Connetquot, John F. Kennedy, Ruth

C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools.

While this worked in the past, it would now present difficulties due to the district’s new security procedures. In February 2013, new audio/video surveillance systems were installed at the main entrance doors of each of the elementary schools. All visitors are now required to display identification prior to entering the buildings, and only after a visitor has been identified and cleared are the doors unlocked and the visitor permitted to enter and sign in at the front desk.

Voting at the elementary schools would be very

difficult.

Community members would be required to follow the identification procedure, possibly leading to long lines. This would be necessary since the safety of the district’s students, faculty and staff must remain paramount.

Voting at one central location, the Early Childhood Center, where no students are currently present, would avoid the security issue entirely and streamline the voting process.

The change in voting location also produces a cost savings in these fiscally challenging times.

TOURING ISLIP - Connetquot Elementary School second-grade students from the classrooms of Crystal Chiari, Leslie Davis, Melissa Love and Jennifer Rizzo took a bus tour of East Islip on March 22nd, visiting the community’s public library, post office and fire department as well as Stanley’s Bakery and Renzo’s Pizza.

TRACK STANDOFF - The East Islip boys varsity track team raced into Hauppauge on April 23rd to take on League IV rivals the Eagles, and came away with a 76-65 victory and an improved 3-1 season record. A wonderful paradox, Mr. Nelson is as flexible and versatile a teacher and mentor as he is a person of integrity and uncompromising ethics.

The model he presents to teachers and students alike, one of honest and probing scholarship bolstered by compassion and respect, has enriched our English Department, our fledgling IB Program and 18 years’ worth of very lucky students.

This year, Mr. Nelson has also received the Scope Award for commitment to excellence in the teaching category as well as being named the Dowling College/News 12 Long Island Educator for the Month of October.

Recently, he traveled to Demark with twenty-nine Bay Shore High School IB diploma students as part of the first IB international school exchange program.

Congratulations to Jon Nelson on his welldeserved recognition as a Harvard Club of Long Island Distinguished Teacher.

Ethnic Pen Award Winners On April 19th, the Annual Ethnic Pen Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the Bay Shore High School English Department, was held at Bay Shore High School with this year’s theme Hope for Change.

Every year, this nationally recognized conference draws over 900 attendees, including students from Bay Shore High School, Bay Shore Middle School, and students and teachers from schools across Long Island.

Bay Shore students also participate in a writing contest, at both the Middle School and High School level, where they can express their

ideas about the theme in Derek Brown either poetry or prose. Honorable Mention Essay Congratulations to this Alfredo Chapman year’s 16 winners who all Honorable Mention Poetry received a certificate, a HS Award Winners Barnes and Noble gift card, Krish Kamdar and acknowledgment at a 1st Place Essay breakfast honoring their Asia Stewart accomplishments.

The 2013 Ethnic Pen Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the Bay Shore High School English Department and held at the High School on April 19th, was another terrific success. This year’s theme was “Hope for Change” and showcased three dynamic keynote speakers.

First, YouTube phenomenon Franchesca Ramsey spoke about the use of Social Media as a make-or-break tool of the 21st Century. Next, poet Derrick Brown read visceral, engaging, takeno-prisoners spoken word poetry.

Lastly, Shadrack Boakye, CEO of the Truth Urban Theatre Group, told the inspiring story of how he escaped his war-stricken homeland Liberia, learned how to read later than his American classmates,

and persevered to become an accomplished debate champion, public speaker, writer, playwright, and performer.

Every year, this nationally recognized conference draws over 900 attendees, including 500 students from Bay Shore High School, 30 from Bay Shore Middle School, and students and teachers from schools across Long Island, all of whom enjoy the keynote sessions and participate in two writing workshops led by accomplished/published Bay Shore teachers or other writers of merit.

One of Ethnic Pen’s organizers, High School English teacher Mrs. Joanne Mayo, said of the event, “Bay Shore students are so fortunate to have the opportunity to be inspired by such successful authors.

Also, seeing some of their own teachers grow into published authors makes the possibility of becoming an author themselves one day a real possibility.”

Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) Program Coordinator Jonathan Nelson has been named a Distinguished Teacher by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

Mr. Nelson is part of a select group of secondary school teachers who were nominated by a former student who is now a Harvard undergraduate.

The Harvard students were asked to identify the teacher who had “the greatest effect on their lives and the lives of their fellow students from 7th to 12th grade.”

Approximately one hundred teachers on Long Island receive this designation each year.

Nominated by Erin Corcoran, a former Bay Shore High School student currently attending Harvard, Mr. Nelson was described as

being “incredibly helpful” and “so enthusiastic about what he was doing.”

From an instructional standpoint, “[h]is lesson plans were clearly well thought out and were always engaging and thought provoking. He stood out from many other teachers because he cared about us as people, not just our grades or his class.”

As an English teacher at Bay Shore High School from 1994-2009, Jon Nelson set the standard for what a teacher should be: prepared, creative, knowledgeable, attentive, and committed to all students equally. He mentored many teachers without hesitation and from time to time spoke at faculty meetings about the importance of teaching students how to think critically.

Outside of the classroom, Mr. Nelson co-founded the High School’s Creative Writing Club and Poetry Jam, coached the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team, and willingly took on the enormous challenge of launching and administering the IB Program as the IB Program Coordinator and Theory of Knowledge

On April 7th, Bay Shore Wellness Alliance, Good Samaritan Hospital and the Bay Shore Schools teamed up to sponsor Bay Shore’s 3rd Annual Bunny Hop Walk.

Over 150 participants showed up to walk the mile long Main Street trail, with the children stopping to collect prizefilled eggs, provided by Good Samaritan Hospital, along the way. At the end of the walk, kids posed for pictures with the Easter Bunny (Marilyn Mott in the Bay Shore Wellness

Alliance sponsored Bunny Hop Suit).

Leading The Walk were Bay Shore teachers/ coaches M. Borkowski, L. Brennen and one of the Wellness Alliance founders Dr. V. William Caracci. Kindergarten Earth Day

Mrs. Mollica’s Kindergarten class at Bay Shore Mary G. Clarkson School read numerous books in order to celebrate Earth Day on April 22nd.

Fallen Heroes

M&M GRANT - Recently, the Bay Shore Middle School Mentor and Mentee Program (M&M) received a $750 grant from the Mentoring Partnership of Long Island (MPLI).

This grant was awarded to programs that took active steps the previous year towards improving the quality of their mentoring programs. Franca Floro, Director of Programs and Training for MPLI, recently visited the Middle School and met with some of the program’s mentors to offer guidance and suggestions. The grant money will be used for monthly mentoring events such as kite flying, pumpkin decorating, and gardening.

The east security checkpoint in MacArthur Airport become temporary home to a travelling memorial dedicated to the memory of soldiers who have fallen in combat during the war on terror.

The massive exhibit of 6,470 military dog tags is currently on display and open to the public at the airport through Memorial Day. The solemn exhibit, built in the memory of United States Marine Corps Corporal Christopher G. Scherer, acts as a large wind chime when the breeze from an open door hits the thousands of dog tags.

Cpl. Christopher G. Scherer was killed by sniper fire in Iraq in 2007.

His father, Tim Scherer,

conceived the idea for the memorial shortly after his son’s death. The display of honor currently stands over eight feet tall and stretches forty-two feet wide, and grows every year as more American soldiers are lost overseas.

Tim Scherer has stated repeatedly that his hope is for members of the public to be reminded that the dog tags don’t just represent fallen soldiers, but also the devastated families who have forever lost their loved ones. By the end of the year he estimates that there will be over 6,700 dog tags on display.

This memorable display will also make an outdoor appearance at this year’s MacArthur Airport 5K Run/ Walk on June 1st. Airport

and Town personnel have formed a team called “Team Chris” to honor Christopher Scherer. Their mission is simple: “honor the fallen and support our troops.” Tim Scherer explains that sounds of the dog tags blowing in the wind “is the Soldiers sharing their story.”

“One family’s loss has inspired a beautiful memory for all to embrace.

Fashion Class Visit

Long Island artist Julianna Kirk visited East Islip High School’s fashion class on April 10th for a three-hour workshop on fused glass pendants, presented through the BOCES Arts-in-Education program.

Kirk, a former high school teacher, is currently a member of the faculty at the Art League of Long Island in Dix Hills, as well as the Long Island Craft Guild, the Women Sharing Art organization

Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt welcomed Kate Natalie (8) and Gabriella Crimi (9) of Commack Road Elementary School as they unloaded bags and boxes of donations into the garage of the Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet Center.

The girls set up a collection bin at school and have been spearheading their fellow students to get more involved and educated about animal

shelters and pet adoption.

The two girls collected a wide range of much needed pet supplies, from food and snacks to beds, blankets and towels. The students also donated toys and a $50 check to go to the care and comfort of the animals at the shelter.

“Theses girls have gone above and beyond to support and promote the animals at our shelter, collecting so much in only a two-week period.

We congratulate them for an outstanding job and for inspiring others to make a difference” said Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt.

Is Sandy Bringing Jellyfish?

By: Tyler Cianciulli Some consider jellyfish to be stinging nightmares, but it is proving to be evident that, through their seemingly mindless movement, jellies actually help the ecosystem. With every pulsating contraction of a jellyfish’s umbrella, a stew of marine matter is propelled, therefore creating a turbulent environment that is rich in nutrients.

In simpler terms, a jelly brings fertile water from the depths through its movement. This biogenic mixing leads to a plankton boom, which results in a surge of baitfish and ultimately works up the food chain to create a

healthy, thriving ecosystem.

Compounded with this effect, a jellyfish also helps to maintain a healthy population of organisms by both eating some and protecting others.

In addition, jellyfish are a key food source for many animals. One of these, the sea turtle, relies on jellies for its daily meal. They are quite abundant here on Long Island, but like with any other animal, jellyfish are crucial to maintaining a healthy balance of predators and prey.

In the Long Island Sound, one of the most diverse bar-built estuaries on the east coast of the United States of America, jellyfish serve an alternate purpose. This 650 million

year-old creature picks up the slack of eelgrass. During the years in which eelgrass is on a down-swing, many marine birds will peck at the fleshy, gooey umbrella of these gelatinous floating invertebrates. Tuna, sharks and even other jellyfish partake in grazing upon these small cnidarians.

When a jellyfish dies unconsumed, it acts as a host for even more life.

Funguses, bacteria and other decomposers break down and feast upon the deceased organism. It can be said that the jellyfish is a “jack-of-all-trades” kind of animal that isn’t just a monster, but a helpful organism that is crucial to the survival of many of Long Island’s creatures.
