With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure. The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplantrelated expenses. In Holbrook, volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of transplant patients like local girl, Katie Patton. Katie is the daughter of Ryan and Lori Patton. Born on April 20th, 2009, Katie was diagnosed with Diamond Blackfan Anemia. The doctors at Cohen Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park, New York, have recommended a life-saving bone marrow transplant. An estimated $60,000 is being raised by Holbrook volunteers. Volunteers are needed

He was selected Honorable Mention All-State, 2nd team All-Long Island and Defensive MVP of the PAL Senior All Star game. Ryan will join James Higgins at LIU-CW Post. Lauren Worden is a three year varsity starter and team captain for this year’s lady Thunderbird soccer team. Coach Shanks said that “I can put Lauren anywhere on the field and have no

doubt that she can get the job done, and exceed my expectations.” Consensus is that Worden’s graduation will leave big shoes to fill on, and off, the field. Lauren will be attending Jacksonville University in the fall. Connetquot HS Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha joined AD Mark Dellecave in congratulating these outstanding studentathletes on their official ‘signing day’, and wish them continued success as they move on to their next academic, and athletic, challenges.

Of Spring & Weathering The Storm By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

aware of the consequences of bullying, and of being a passive bystander. It encourages young people to have a voice in creating a safe environment in, and out, of school, and to empower students with the tools needed to help create a community of acceptance and diversity. Mrs. Martorelli thanked all the students, teachers and administrators for making the first Mix-It-Up day such a success. She also singled out the members of the ABC Club for their dedication to concepts of

respect and acceptance: Ashley Lapine, Adiba Choudhury, Sam Hill, Bobby Nilsen, Brittany Fialkowski, Nick Teague, Prima Gupta, Alexa Dibalsi, Rachel Panico, Lexi Poje, Christine Mahoney, Michael Caradonna, Alexa Holland and co-advisor Debbie Billotto. Congratulations to each of the school counselors, psychologists, teachers, administrators and students for facilitating, and participating, in such a creative anti-bullying activity.

So spring is here, the groundhog(s) lied, etc… we’ve heard it all ad nauseum over the past week. Here’s a newsflash: just because the calendar noted the vernal equinox doesn’t mean Mother Nature automatically obliges with shining rays of sunshine and flower blossoms sprouting from every patch of newly green grass. We’ve all had a rough winter. Autumn too, come to think of it. What began with the last golden notes of summer seemed to segue abruptly into hurricanes and blizzards with funny names who left none-too-funny paths of destruction in their

that. (Please.) We claim to love living in an area that is fortunate to feature four unique seasons, each with their own benefits and annoyances; yet, with each month we seem to find more reasons to complain. Too cold? Where’s spring? Oh wait, now my allergies are acting up… Can’t wait for summer? Never mind – now the humidity is too high. Is autumn here yet? Brrrr… and the cycle continues. Rest assured, spring – in all its glory – will be upon us before you know it. Don’t hate the groundhog – he’s just a poor little furry rodent who was rudely awakened by being wrenched from his hole in the ground.

Connetquot High School’s student-run Anti-Bullying Club (ABC) organized it’s 1st Annual Mix-It-Up Day for February 7th. Club President (and founder) Ashley Lapine, and faculty advisor Barbara Martorelli, explained that the concept was originally proposed by the magazine ‘Teaching Tolerance’. The event is celebrated by schools across the country and was originally scheduled to be held on October 30th, but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Sandy. The idea is to get students to sit, and mingle, with students they might not normally sit with at lunch time. Mrs. Martorelli said that “students in each lunch period took part in the program’s games and activities and, by the end of the Mix-It-Up Day, it became everything we could have hoped for, and more! Students were not only participating in the planned activities, but many students were going over to students who were sitting alone, and asking to join them.” After the school day was over, ABC club members held a meeting to discuss the day’s events. While pleased with the overall interaction by the students, they began to make plans for an even more comprehensive program next year! Consensus, by members, teachers and students in general, was that for an event of this magnitude, this first MixIt-Up Day was extremely successful. The ABC Club Mission Statement makes students

wakes. And now, five months later, most of us are still in the midst of cleaning up and “getting back to normal.” In fact, for some, that process is just beginning. Five months later. Crazy. Pretty soon, we will be counting down the days to beach season, hoping against hope that there will be some small sliver of sand and surf left to enjoy, never mind functional roads to get there. And then – oh yes – the next hurricane season will be upon us, when all residents of Long Island will hold their collective breath and hope (preferably within the walls of their newly reconstructed homes) that last year’s oncein-a-lifetime storm was only

Showing Their Chops

Syosset Hospital chefs sliced their way through the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Ultimate Chef Healthy Entrée Challenge competition on Thursday, placing first in the second annual cooking competition for their filet mignon marinated in chili pepper, tequila and lime juice with wild rice and celery root as well as a mango and jicama salsa dish. “It’s a great validation to be recognized for the meals we prepare at Syosset Hospital and for providing nutritious and tasty dishes to our patients,” said Syosset Hospital chef Russell Ficke, who took home the top prize along with chef Xavier Haynes.

Mr. Haynes noted, “All of the chefs served up inventive meals today. It’s fun to have a day like this with some friendly competition that also shows off our quality work throughout the health system.” During last year’s competition, Syosset Hospital took third place. Chefs Aneesah Cox and Natrell Fisher from Staten Island University Hospital took second place this year for their chipotle-rubbed pork tenderloin with garlic brown rice pilaf, curry yogurt sauce, mango chutney and collard greens. Lenox Hill chefs Patricia Sobol and Johnny Beniquez were in third place with their

shrimp dish that had a tomato saffron broth and a parsnip and celery root puree; chefs from Lenox Hill were in second place last year. Chefs from 13 of North Shore-LIJ’s hospitals and facilities diced, sautéed and blanched at Glen Cove Hospital’s Pratt Auditorium during the competition to create tasty, appealing and healthful dishes. The competition, which was held during National Nutrition Month, helps to show that hospital food can not only be healthful but it also surpasses the stereotypes of being bland and boring. During the competition, chefs had access to a pantry, stove

Suffolk County is one of four municipalities in New York State who have implemented a pilot program named in honor of PFC Joseph Dwyer, a Suffolk County resident who joined the Army after 9/11 and was deployed to Iraq. PFC Dwyer suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and lost his battle with PTSD. The Peer To Peer program is overseen by the Suffolk County Veteran’s Service Agency and is designed to serve veterans, active duty, reserve and National Guard troops suffering from PTSD and allows veterans the opportunity to share and discuss their issues and problems with trained veteran personnel. The unique nature of the program is that veterans are serving as the facilitators of the groups which provides a comfort and familiarity level to

those veterans seeking assistance. Funding for the program was secured by Senator Lee Zeldin in the amount of $200,000 through the pilot phase of the program. “The Peer to Peer program is needed in Suffolk County as we have seen a rise of military suicides in our country,” said County Executive Bellone. “Those who are serving or who have served our country need our support and resources and the Peer to Peer program is designed to address the needs of the military community suffering from PTSD.” Suffolk County was chosen as a pilot County because of its large and diverse veteran population coupled with its reputation for delivering quality services to veterans. The Peer to Peer program currently holds seven weekly group meetings throughout Suffolk County

with more than 78 veterans actively participating in the program. The meetings operate with an acceptance of anonymity to ensure full participation by the military community. The program has received full support from Suffolk County Veterans Service groups and the Northport VA Medical Center who also refers veterans to the program.

Celebrating Reading

In celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday and the national literacy movement Read Across America Day, Sylvan Avenue Elementary School fourth-graders from Jaime Abran’s class and firstgraders from Christina Law’s class shared a few familiar stories together as book buddies.

Sporting oversized hats similar to that of Dr. Seuss’ famed Cat in the Hat, the students took turns reading aloud such favorites as Green Eggs And Ham and Horton Hears A Who! during the afternoon celebration. In addition to the colorful hats they had made, each first-grader received a handy bookmark

fashioned by the fourthgraders at the end of the book buddies event. The partnering classes get together throughout the year to celebrate their commitment to becoming lifelong readers through a variety of literacy-based events.

SCOPE HONORS - Central Islip School District Literacy Coach Dr. Patricia Barry and Central Islip School Board Member William G. Softy received the SCOPE Shining Star 2013 Awards in their respective fields during a recent celebration at Villa Lombardi’s. Artists’ Reflections

Junior Music Man

made members of the Connetquot community proud of its talented young students. Led by students Jackie Conlon (as Marian Paroo) and Liam Attridge (as Harold Hill) this gifted ensemble group of actors, singers and dancers told the story of Harold as a boys’ band organizer who would skip town with the community’s cash! By the end of this wonderful musical show, of course, Harold falls in love with Marian, and the audience comes to see him in a different light. Mr. Malafronte is proud of the students and staff that made The Music Man such a success. He extended his gratitude to

all of the talented students, from cast, crew and scenery helpers, that made the show such a success. He also extended his thanks to the faculty and staff, as well as the parents and entire Ronkonkoma community for their support. With a mixture of humor, drama, singing and dancing, The Music Man, Jr., entertained the excited audience, which would give the cast a standing ovation at the show’s conclusion! Congratulations to the cast, crew and advisors for putting on a show the entire Ronkonkoma community can be proud of!

On February 7th, Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS) Interim Principal Mr. Joseph Licato welcomed family, friends and members of the community to the 2013 production of one of Broadway’s most famous musicals, Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man! Despite the postponement of the show’s next two dates, due to the Nemo Blizzard, the show was spectacular! The play was held in the Alice R. Schaefer Auditorium at RMS, to a capacity audience. Director and producer Mr. Vincent Malafronte, his staff, and talented performers, put on a colorful show that

Countless Bayport-Blue Point School District students showcased their creative talents during this year’s PTA Reflections program, themed “The Magic of a Moment.” The students brought this year’s theme to life through such media as dance choreography, literature, photography and visual arts and were judged by panels of local and regional judges. Based on their inspired pieces, 20 students were recognized locally as winners. Of those local winners, four students were named Regional Award of Excellence winners, earning them a chance to compete at the state level of the competition, and one student was named a Regional Merit Award winner. Congratulations to the following students: Academy Street: Eva Morris, Visual Arts Brianna Von Glahn, Photography Giavanna Zavala, Visual Arts Blue Point:

New Museum To Be Formed

SCHOOL CHALLENGE WON - Connetquot Central School District Sycamore Avenue Elementary School students recently gathered for an assembly to see the Principal’s Challenge, a celebration for the success of the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program. Students and parents exceeded expectations by reading over 75,300 pages and as a reward, students received an exciting presentation from the principal as two faculty members cut off all of his hair while the entire school watched!

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and the members of the Islip Town Board are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached with the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters (FITF) for the construction and operation of a firefighting museum. The agreement will let FITF establish a public display of antique and modern firefighting equipment that will be open to the public. “Getting this project off the ground has been a passion of mine for some time now,” said Councilman Flotteron. “I

believe we have found the perfect location for this facility and the Town Board is proud to contribute this land to the Friends of Islip Town Firemen.” “This is a long overdue tribute to the extraordinary sacrifice and heroism of the men and women of our fire services,” said Supervisor Tom Croci. “They risk their lives and some have perished protecting our families and our community. Islip is proud to be the home of this new landmark.” Ed Tully, speaking on behalf of the Friends of Islip Town Firefighters, said “We are grateful to

the Town for allowing us to move ahead with this project. This is something that has been a dream of this organization for a long time, and will be a great resource not just for Islip’s firefighting community, but the Islip community at-large.” The license agreement is in effect for forty-nine years, but can be renewed during that time. Although situated on Town land, members of FITF will be responsible for the construction, maintenance and operation of the public display and the property grounds.

He also shared a bit about his work with the armed forces and how important it is to give thanks to service men and women.

The Bayport-Blue Point School District’s Board of Education has appointed Dr. Timothy P. Hearney as its new assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction. Dr. Hearney will officially assume this role within the district on July 1st, 2013, taking over for Miriam Flynn, who has served as interim assistant superintendent for the past year. Dr. Hearney is a familiar face within the BayportBlue Point community, having worked as the high school principal for the past five years. “We feel very fortunate to have found our new assistant superintendent within the current fabric of our administrative team,” stated Superintendent of Schools Dr. Vincent Butera. “Dr. Hearney has been an integral part of the school district, and during his time here has clearly demonstrated that he possess a finely tuned skill set to assist in preparing our students for college and careers. His accomplished track record for raising the bar speaks highly and directly to his belief that all students be provided with opportunities and high expectations.” During his tenure with the district, Dr. Hearney has not

only been responsible for operational and curriculum development aspects at the high school, but also for raising the bar for student achievement. While principal, the high school’s Advanced Regents diploma rate has increased to over 70 percent, with continued growth projected in future years, and there have been notable successes within the school’s Advanced Placement program. In particular, the number of AP exams administered has increased from 167 to more than 360; the number of AP students has increased from 106 to 204; and the number of AP Scholars has increased from 39 to 64, with five students being named National AP Scholars earlier this year. Dr. Hearney has also been instrumental in increasing the rigor of the school’s instructional program, as more than 20 highlevel courses spanning all curricular areas have been added to the high school program, a School to Business Partnership that enables students to gain real-world career experience has been implemented, and an increased percentage of students are electing to take a fourth year of science and math instruction. In acknowledgement of the school’s collective efforts, New York State Education Commissioner Dr. John B. King Jr. named BayportBlue Point High School a 2012 Reward School. “I am very thankful to the Board of Education and Dr. Butera for the opportunity to work in

this new capacity within the district,” stated Dr. Hearney. “I know firsthand the quality instructors we have within BBP – having worked alongside many of them at the high school for the past five years – and look forward to raising our already-high expectations in order to continue to move the district forward.” Prior to joining the district in 2008, Dr. Hearney worked in the Islip Public School District for eight years, serving in a number of administrative positions. Additionally, he has worked as an adjunct professor at St. John’s University’s Oakdale Campus and in the area of special education at Western Suffolk BOCES. He is a member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the School Administrators Association of New York State, the Council for Exceptional Children and the Council of Administrators of Special Education.
