including many members of the SJC community. Now, nearly five months later, SJC students, alumni, faculty and staff are eager to assist those still suffering and decided to cancel trips they had planned to volunteer in other locations around the country. Sponsored by SJC’s Campus Ministry, the Habitat for Humanity, STRIPES (Students Taking a Role in Positively Empowering Society) and STARS (Students Taking an Active Role in Society) clubs, faculty members from both the Long Island and Brooklyn campuses, selected a group of 26 students that were willing to spend their spring breaks rebuilding structures, moving sand, painting and helping in any way possible after Superstorm Sandy tore through the east coast, leaving particularly severe damage in New York and New Jersey.

A dedicated group of students from St. Joseph’s College (SJC) are opting for an alternative spring break close to home this year, and will spend the week of April 1st through 5th aiding in recovery efforts for local communities that were destroyed earlier this year by Superstorm Sandy. Partnering with organizations such as the Gray Beards, Tunnel to Towers and Sandy Relief Long Beach, students will stay close to home to work in Long Beach, Far Rockaway, Breezy Point and Staten Island, some of the hardest hit areas in New York and New Jersey. This past October, Superstorm Sandy, the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 hurricane season, flooded homes, streets, tunnels and subway lines, destroyed property and left thousands without power. The storm affected countless individuals,

“These groups have been working hard to train, plan, organize and fundraise for this year’s alternative spring break,” said Bryan Gill, moderator of the Habitat for Humanity Club and assistant dean of students and student life on the Long Island Campus. “With such a large group of volunteers, we will be able to split into smaller groups and reach more communities and help even more people. We will also spend time reflecting on this experience and using the trip as a mini service learning project.” Previous spring break trips for SJC students have included helping to build a day care center and playground in Nicaragua, building homes in Georgetown, South Carolina and rebuilding homes that were destroyed by tornadoes in Joplin, Missouri.

Another Successful Season
On Friday, March 22nd the St. Joseph’s Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), Clinic Division (6-7 year olds), Basketball All-Star game was played at Ronkonkoma Middle School, in Ronkonkoma. The gym was filled with excited parents, siblings, coaches and grandparents who came to support their ‘little’ future stars. An All-Star game usually signals the end of a sports season, but at St. Joe’s it was the annual Awards ‘Banquet’, on March 26th, that brought everyone back together one more time, to bring an official ending to the 2013 season. The All-Star game was just plain fun for everyone who played, coached, or just watched and cheered their little guys and girls on. One of the most exciting moments of the night came when the youngsters were presented with their official ‘All-Star’ jerseys. While the score was basically less important
than watching the teams enjoy the experience, it was fun to see the blue and gold teams play on a regulation court, with 10 foot baskets, for the first time. Both teams and their coaches gathered at the conclusion of the game for a memorable All-Star group photo. The March 26th Awards ‘banquet’ provided the youngsters with the opportunity to meet with their teammates, coaches and opponents for the last time this season, along with their parents. Before the impressive trophies were presented, hot dogs, hero’s, salads, beverages and dessert were enjoyed by this year’s Clinic Division participants. As the season comes to an end parents took the time to recognize the people whose efforts and sacrifices made it all possible. Certainly the volunteer coaches are to be congratulated for their efforts to teach basketball skills, allow the youngsters to make new
friends, and emphasize the importance of ‘sportsmanship’. But, if it weren’t for the CYO Chairman and coordinators, none of this would be possible. Great thanks to Henry Melchiona, Chairman; Cathy Stack, ViceChairperson; Nick Vicale, Treasurer and Basketball Coordinator; Gene Stack, Sports Coordinator; and VIV (Very Important Volunteer) Tom Melchiona. Because of these wonderful, thoughtful and generous CYO Sports directors, hundreds of children had the opportunity to enjoy this latest basketball season. One grandparent, and former college basketball coach, was heard to say, “This organization is an example of what ‘little league’ sports are supposed to be. Thank You to all of the volunteers who made this CYO Basketball season so enjoyable. We can’t wait ‘til next season!”
New technology for people who want to hear better.
“Wow!
“I love these new tiny hearing aids from HearUSA.
These new tiny digital hearing aids are amazing! The technology has come so far. The natural sound and clarity is excellent and I can’t even tell that I’m wearing them.
”
— John Fell Real HearUSA Patient
“I’ve been waiting over 20 years to find hearing aids that are as natural sounding, comfortable and easy-to-use.” “ I truly didn’t know how life-changing hearing could be until I tried on these advanced, tiny digital hearing aids from HearUSA. They are very comfortable – I don’t even notice that I am wearing them. I even took a nap with them yesterday and didn’t know they were in my ears. The clarity of sound is so crystal clear, that I now have no problem hearing people in all kinds of settings. I find that I no longer have to turn up the TV or radio at home as the sound and clarity are excellent. “ For more amazing testimonials go to: HearUSA.com/home/testimonials.aspx

Condensing The Collections By: Jamie Lynn Ryan How many songs do you have on your iPod? Do you even listen to half of them? And what about that CD collection? Is it gathering dust on some rack or – better yet – packed away in a box with all the other electronics of yesteryear? You know, next to the famous 8-tracks, cassettes, VHS tapes and vinyl that everyone seems in such a rush to get rid of. Personally, I will never discard my CD collection. In fact, while in the process of shopping for a TV stand/ entertainment center, one of my main criteria was finding a piece with enough shelving to accommodate
my massive music collection. Sure, most of my favorite songs are already stored on my computer, my iPod, my iPhone…but still, there’s nothing quite like putting on a CD and listening to the tracks in sequence – back when an album was an entire concept, rather than a string of hit singles thrown together. I can understand the attachment people have to their records – to anything that encapsulates a moment in time in their respective lives, really. I have a hard time throwing anything out – mostly for sentimental reasons – hence the massive collection of CDs… and books…and videos… and knick-knacks. Sure, some are obsolete and serve no real
purpose – but they’re mine. They each have a story and a memory associated with them and, even if I’ve outgrown the need to display certain mementos, you can bet they will be carefully packed away in a box sooner than kicked to the curb. Don’t get me wrong – I’m by no means a hoarder, nor will you ever see three quarters of the things I have meticulously catalogued and saved through the years out in the open – as long as they are stored away for safe-keeping, ready to reminisce over whenever the moment strikes. As for my CDs, I just can’t bear to put them away in a box. Not yet. Good thing my wall unit has shelves.

owner of Sunrise Toyota heard of the Cordaro’s situation, he immediately wanted to help the family. In addition to sponsoring the benefit, Berg agreed to donate a loaner vehicle from Sunrise Toyota, which was picked up Saturday the 23rd, so the family could take advantage of a timeshare they received for this week’s Spring Break in Florida. While the family is on their “Sunrise Voyage,” Berg is also donating a
portion of every vehicle sold at Sunrise Toyota to the family to help offset the cost of medical treatment. The Cordaro’s “Sunrise Voyage” will be featured on Sunrise Toyota’s Facebook page, so everyone can experience the voyage. Anyone who is not in the market for a vehicle at this time can make a donation to a fund for the Cordaros by calling The Gateway Playhouse at 631.286.1133.

Connetquot High School Wrestling Coach Bill Santoro is again very proud of his ‘Thunderbird’ wrestlers this year, and for good reason. Team captain Brendan Dent has followed up on his Suffolk County Championship with a fourth place finish in the New York State Tournament, held in Albany, on February 23rd. Dent’s performance in the state capital helped
the Section XI (Suffolk County) team come away with yet another first place team finish. Dent completed the season with an overall record of 40-2. Dent is Connetquot’s 15th Suffolk County Champion Wrestler. Coach Bill Santoro has produced more than 75 All-County wrestlers, one New York State Champion and four high school All-Americans. Of Connetquot’s 15 County
Champions, 10 have earned All-New York State honors. With the team’s performance this season, and Dent’s accomplishments in Albany, it is evident that the tradition of Connetquot’s Wrestling success … continues. Congratulation to Brendan Dent, and Coach Bill Santoro.

all farmland. As I grew up I would help on the farm, completing chores before going off to school. “ Those chores included milking cows, collecting chicken eggs and feeding the chickens before walking to school. Mr. Kraics revealed that his school included students in grades K-8, and that one of his teachers was Edith L. Slocum! According to Mr. Kraics “Miss Slocum never married, and had another home in upstate New York. We worked on our handwriting and mathematics very much. She was very dedicated, and structured, and would do anything to help her students.” Mr. Kraics said
that the original school had only two classrooms, and that there were very few students. He remembered graduating from the eighth grade with only 5 other students. Mr. Kraics served on the front lines during WWII for four years. As a young man he enjoyed baseball and race-walking. He and Mrs. Kraics, who recently passed away, were married for 70 years, and raised two boys. Mr. Delio said “It was a great pleasure, and learning experience, for us to speak to Mr. Kraics and learn about life in this ‘Slocum’ community 80 years ago.”
On Wednesday evening, February 6th, Connetquot’s Sycamore Avenue Elementary School community came together to welcome families from the neighboring Idle Hour community for a night of friendship, and relaxation. Sycamore Principle Stuart Pollak said that this night of good food, friendship and entertainment “… is another example of the care and warmth of our PTA members and staff.” The invited guests were families that suffered great loss as a result of the recent Sandy Hurricane. Idle Hour Elementary School Principal Mrs. Denise
Toscano was also on hand to welcome the families. Sycamore PTA members prepared a variety of tasty dishes, and beverages, as well dessert. Parent & staff volunteers served the guests during the evening meal, and students provided upbeat entertainment after dinner, and prior to dessert being served. Mrs. Guiney’s combined Sycamore-Idle Hour student-band added to the festive atmosphere, as did Ms. White’s talented singers. Sycamore’s own talented Magician, Speech Therapist Mr. Wayne Haarhaus, brought the youngsters, and their

Mr. Pollak and Mrs. Toscano thanked their Idle Hour friends for attending this ‘Night of Friendship’, and the wonderful parents and students of the Sycamore community for making the event so enjoyable. Philip Maniaci, a resident of Bohemia, and his wife Jennifer, recently traveled to Mayport, Florida, for a combination reunion, and farewell. The couple had been invited to attend the elaborate March 22nd Decommissioning ceremony of the warship USS Klakring , upon which he served from 1994-1998. The ceremony brought back many of Maniaci’s crewmates, and the prior night’s reunion brought back memories of good friends, and visits to exotic ports of call. The USS Klakring (FFG42) was an Oliver Perry class frigate commissioned in 1983, and named after Rear Admiral Thomas B. Klakring. Over its 29 years of service, the Klakring completed 22 deployments and traveled more than 3.2 million miles worldwide. Those deployments were to the Middle East, South America, Europe and Africa.
Captain Paul Flood, Commander of Destroyer Squadron 14, proudly addressed the assembled veterans, along with family and friends of the current crew which stood at attention ‘at the rails’. “From maritime patrols in the Persian Gulf, antipiracy operations off the coast of Africa, to counternarcotics patrols in the Caribbean Sea, Klakring has always performed exceptionally.” Commander Bertram Hodge, Klakring’s last captain, spoke about the hard work of the crew, and how these men would carry on the Klakring’s traditions to the fleet. The ceremony concluded with the current crew of the Klakring departing the ship. Once the last sailor left the ship, USS Klakring was officially decommissioned. While this proud and powerful ship will no longer sail the seas, it’s former officers
and crew will never forget the time they spent together aboard the ship that provided ‘Freedom Through Vigilance’. Maniaci completed his service aboard the Klakring in 1998 with the rank of Operations Specialist-2nd Class. He is currently Vice President of Operations for World Customs Brokerage, Inc.

The American Parkinson Disease Association, Inc. (APDA) is hard at work in Suffolk County helping to Ease The Burden And Find The Cure. Founded more than 51 years ago, the APDA continues to help those affected by this disease. The American Parkinson Disease Association Information & Referral Center of Suffolk County offers support groups, educational events, literature and referrals to those afflicted with Parkinson Disease. “Parkinson Disease can be devastating to those who are afflicted and their families” says Julie Garofalo, R.N., Coordinator for the APDA Information & Referral Center located at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown. “There has been extensive research within the past 10 years, leading to more medications and surgical treatments to help
reduce the symptoms of Parkinson disease, but, there is still no cure.” More research is needed, she said. Parkinson Disease is a progressive disorder of the brain caused by a lack of dopamine, with symptoms that can include a decrease in spontaneous movement, difficulty walking, postural instability, ridgidity and tremors. While the disease typically affects men and women over 60 years old, it is increasingly affecting people in their 20’s through 50’s. There are approximately 1.5 million Americans who are living with Parkinson Disease. April 11th marks the birthday of Dr. James Parkinson, who first recognized the disease now named for him. For further information on Parkinson Disease or to get information on support groups, call 631.862.3560 or visit our website at www.liapda. org.

Flowers are budding, which signals two things: Spring is here and it’s time to celebrate Earth Day with community enhancing projects. Keep Islip Clean is the local sponsor of these April events collectively known as the Great American Cleanup, the nationwide effort designed by Keep America Beautiful. Earth Day 2013 marks the 24th consecutive year of KIC’s involvement in the Great American Cleanup and there are a number of ways to participate. KIC organizes major litter cleanup events throughout Islip Township that all residents may join and also encourages people to form groups to enhance their own neighborhoods and public spaces. Volunteers often work in related activities such as beautification, recycling drives, graffiti paint-outs and student art contests. A KIC representative is available to meet with grade school children to discuss fun ways to keep our planet clean and green. KIC

National Walking Day In celebration of National Walking Day, on Wednesday, April 3rd, the American Heart Association is encouraging Americans to get fit and have fun by launching Show Us Your Moves. The month-long Instagram promotion encourages consumers to submit photos of their
favorite fun physical activity – dancing, roller skating, walking with friends, gardening – you name it! Selected photos will be featured each week on www.heart.org and various American Heart Association social media pages. By sharing pictures of their physical activity on Instagram with the hashtag
#mymoves, consumers can help spread the notion that exercise can be fun. On National Walking Day, a day where hundreds of thousands across the nation take steps to improve their health, Americans are encouraged to spend at least 30 minutes of their day briskly walking. Physical activity is critical
to being healthy, but less than 50 percent of adults get enough daily exercise. Adults need at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week to see the health benefits of physical activity such as lower blood pressure, improved bone health, weight maintenance after weight loss, better sleep, and more
energy. With Show Us Your Moves, the American Heart Association hopes people will continue to make physical activity a priority beyond National Walking Day and find the fun in being fit. For more information on Show Us Your Moves, visit www.heart.org/ nationalwalkingday to
see promotion rules and directions. To find an American Heart Association Heart Walk in your area and to access healthy living resources including information about getting active and eating healthy, visit My Heart. My Life.

As part of the district’s FLEX (Foreign Language Experience) program, Bayport-Blue Point elementary school students are given the unique opportunity to study another language at an early age. During the course of the 10-session program, third- through fifth-graders begin to learn common Spanish phrases and develop an understanding of Spanishspeaking cultures. Fifthgrade students using Rosetta Stone language emersion software also have the opportunity to learn some beginner’s French. There are added benefits to the linguistic ones commonly associated with the study of a foreign language. As FLEX teacher Sally Miller explained, “For a condensed, introductory program such as the one we
have in the district, studies show that early exposure to another language positively influences students’ perceptions of other cultures and their willingness to accept and learn about other places.” She further noted, “By the time the students enter middle school, they have a fair amount of experience with the basics of these languages, and it often helps them decide which program to continue in the secondary schools.” In the early grades, the students learn basic communication phrases such as certain foods and how to say their name. These introductory lessons are in close connection with their social studies curriculum, which includes Mexico and various other cultural studies. Fourth-graders continue to build upon
this foundation by learning how to describe themselves and their likes and dislikes, while fifth-graders conclude the program by writing a descriptive “Who Am I?” essay that they share aloud with the class. This March, as a conclusion to their study, the fourth-grade students at Sylvan Avenue Elementary School created a puppet show for their classmates. Working in pairs, the students created a dialogue script that they acted out using colorful puppets. Each pair incorporated the various vocabulary words they had been studying, including numbers, sports and emotions. It was a perfect opportunity for them to practice their speaking and listening comprehension skills.

SPECIAL READER - Islip Town Supervisor Tom Croci recently read passages of The Giving Tree to a gathering of students from the Fire Island School District. Supervisor Croci stressed the value of education and encouraged the students to read as much as possible.
Young Authors Inspire
Bayport-Blue Point elementary school students regularly demonstrate their creativity through school projects and writing assignments. Encouraging the district’s budding young authors to embrace their literary talents, students from each of the three elementary schools recently penned original stories that showcased the English language arts skills they have gained through classroom studies. These stories were submitted to Child’s Play, a touring theater company that visits schools throughout the United States to perform works written by students. During their visit to
each school, the talented professionals of Child’s Play chose three studentcomposed plays out of the many submissions to act out. The students were pleasantly surprised to have their pieces selected and enjoyed watching their stories come to life. In addition to the school winners, several students at each building were named honorable mentions in the call for playwrights. Congratulations to the following winners: Academy Street: Third-graders Kevin Weiss, Thomas Prendergast and Aidan Crank – “The Silly and Smelly Skeleton” Fourth-grader Caroline
Moller – “The Caimoo Monster” First-grader George Rose and fourth-grader Bella Rose – “Mr. Bubbles Great Adventure” Blue Point: Sandy Swan’s kindergarten class – “Zero the Hero” Fourth-graders Scottie Campbell and Jack McCarthy– “Clown Care” Fifth-grader Jaime Dichiara – “Jazz” Sylvan Avenue: Second-grader Kyle Benkov – “Life as a Leaf” Fourth-grader Grace Dean – “Duck” Fifth-grader Jacob Lurie – “Lonely Larry”

All living things need water to survive and stay hydrated. Do you appreciate the water found all around you that helps you grow? On April 20th, The Long Island Game Farm is hosting Green At The Game Farm, a special Earth Day event that will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Children will learn to make their own rain sticks as they celebrate this very special planet that everyone
lives on. Older children (and younger children, with a parent’s help) will also participate in a special Earth Day scavenger hunt as they travel throughout the Game Farm looking for clues. The event is free to children under 12, with paid admission. “This is a fun and educational event that children can take part in to celebrate Earth Day,” said Melinda Novak, Vice President/Co-Owner, Long
Island Game Farm. “While they join in arts and crafts and the scavenger hunt, they will begin to appreciate these natural resources and not take them for granted.” In the event of rain, it will be rescheduled for April 21. For more information on The Long Island Game Farm, please call 631.878.6670, or visit www.longislandgamefarm. com.

All-Star Game
With the 2013 Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball season coming to an end, the annual AllStar game was held on Friday, March 22nd. Held at the Ronkonkoma Middle School in Ronkonkoma, 20 youngsters were selected for the two teams which would compete for the first time on a regulation basketball court, with 10 foot high baskets. This ‘clinic’ division is used to familiarize the youngsters with the basics of the game, learning basketball skills on a smaller court, with 8’ high baskets. The youngsters selected to play in this All-Star game are 6 and 7 years old and were chosen by the coaches from the 20 teams that competed on either Saturdays or Sundays at the St. Joseph’s School
in Ronkonkoma. The youngsters were excited to receive their official ‘All-Star’ shirts before the game, and to play in front of so man y ‘fans’! Mom’s, dads, siblings, friends and plenty of grandparents filled the stands for the contest and cheered the two teams as they played a close game which ended in a 12-10 win for the ‘gold’ All-Stars. Coaches Paul Rom (gold) and Mike Krall (blue) were pleased with their players’ efforts, and thoroughly enjoyed the camaraderie between the youngsters on both teams. The game began with player introductions, a dedication by CYO league coordinator Henry Melchiona to military veterans in attendance, and ended with the players
and coaches shaking hands and congratulating one another. Congratulations again to all the players and coaches selected for this year’s CYO (clinic division) All-Star teams: Gold team: Coach Paul Rom, Joe Maniaci, Matthew Macarthy, Shane Kirby, Francesca Bandal, Edward Fieseler, Valdimir Triebwasser, Frankie Rom, Ryan Lozada, Alexander Lillie and Gregory Baldinucci Blue team: Coach Mike Krall, John Dean, Dominick Ricca, Ryan Keindle, Giovanni Gandolfi, Nicholas Krall, Michael Loughlin, Dylan Facciaponte, Brendan Halloran, Shane Bellino and Brody Streames. Making Music
Ms. Lauren Alber is one of many innovative music teachers at Connetquot’s Cherokee Street Elementary School, in Ronkonkoma. Recently, Ms. Alber introduced a unit which would allow her students to create their own songs, using an innovative software program called Jam Studio. Ms. Albert’s 5th grade students had been working in the computer lab,
creating their own songs, and generating personal CD’s. Ms. Alber said “They have the opportunity to create any style of song they like, with instruments and chords of their choosing. Upon completing their work, students use the internet to email the songs to their proud parents.” During the month of March, which is Music in Our School’s Month, Ms. Alber will play one
student’s composition each morning, with the daily announcements, “… so the whole school can hear their masterpieces!” Cherokee Elementary School Principal Mrs. Bridgette Wilson congratulated Ms. Alber and her students, for the creative work they have composed, and shared. Photo by: Joseph Maniaci

Making A Difference
Six vital members of the Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center represent three of the mother/daughter teams who have collectively contributed 141 years of service in volunteer work. A volunteer awards luncheon that will honor these women and other dedicated volunteers will be held at Captain Bill’s Bayview House on April 8th. Dignitaries, board members, hospital leadership and guests will join Guild members
to recognize outstanding service achievements. The Guilds are groups of individuals who work diligently for the benefit of the medical center. These volunteers organize community activities, staff the hospital gift shop, hold annual fund- raising events and operate an offsite thrift shop to support Good Samaritan. In 2012, the Guilds raised more than $268,000, with more than 40,000 hours of service donated as well. Guild Central Council
President and Past President Vera Meinhold and her mother, Millie Mascari, joined the Lindenhurst/North Babylon Guilds in 1975. They have been instrumental in bringing valued volunteers to help raise funds to support hospital services. Rose Cappiello and her daughter, Marie Nicharico, and Ellen Fornaro and her daughter, Eileen Fornaro help to sustain the Hospital Guild Thrift Shop in Babylon since 1986.

Recognition Luncheon
The Long Island Chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.) today honored dedicated officers at their Annual Law Enforcement Recognition Luncheon for their efforts in eliminating drunk and drugged driving. Among the honorees was Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer, who, at 28 years old, is a 10-year veteran of the United States Army and was recently named Suffolk’s “Top Cop” for 2012. D/S Turzer made 108 DWI arrests last year as a member of the Sheriff’s Highway
Enforcement Section. He holds the record for the highest number of DWI arrests in all of Suffolk County for the year 2012, and made a quarter of the total number of DWI arrests made by Suffolk’s deputies. The Section made an impressive 416 DWI arrests in 2012 while patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and was also honored by M.A.D.D. during today’s ceremony. Suffolk Sheriff Vincent DeMarco offered praise to all the deputies for their excellent work in
patrolling the Long Island Expressway and Sunrise Highway, and had this to say about D/S Turzer’s service: “I’m especially proud to have Deputy Sheriff Greg Turzer on our team, and thank him for his service to Suffolk County residents and to our nation. I can say without hesitation that lives have been saved due to his tenacity in tracking down drunk and drugged drivers, and I couldn’t be more proud of his extraordinary record.”
