County approached us about saving a Coonhound named Valentine that they had nursed back to health,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue. “This was the beginning of our commitment to take several Daviess dogs a month. In 2011 we rescued 40 dogs from this shelter, and 65 more in 2012. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to rescue more Kentucky dogs and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. We can continue to make a difference for dogs at home, plus dogs from faraway.” The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more than 8,000 local animalwelfare partners across the country, the foundation donates approximately $15 million a year to make a
difference in the lives of millions of animals. The organization is funded through donations raised during fundraisers conducted in Petco’s more than 1,200 stores across the country, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions. Money raised helps fund animalwelfare organizations, spay and neuter efforts, animal-assisted therapy programs and humane education. The majority of the funds raised remain in the communities where they were raised, and the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal-welfare efforts. In 2012, the Petco Foundation surpassed $100 million in funds raised for companion animals since the organization was created. To learn more, visit www. petcofoundation.org.

to improve the quality of life for homeless pets. Last Hope placed 300 dogs and 646 cats in loving, responsible homes in 2012. This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of adoptable Kentucky dogs. In rural states, Beagles and other hounds are routinely abandoned, starved or even shot when not deemed worthwhile hunting dogs. Daviess County Shelter currently has a staff of five, including some prison inmates, handling over 5,000 animals a year. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, Daviess has dramatically been able to improve adoptions and lower the number of animals put to sleep. In 2008, 90 percent of the dogs and cats at this Kentucky shelter were euthanized. Now the figure is much lower, less than 10 percent. “In 2009, Daviess

Last Hope Animal Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc. recently announced it has been awarded a $12,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support our collaborative effort with the Daviess County Animal Control of Owensboro, Kentucky to bring dogs in need (mainly hounds that would be euthanized) to the Last Hope Dog Adoption Center in Wantagh where they will be readily adopted. On April 4th, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center hosted a free wellness symposium, A Healthy Serving of Knowledge, offered through its Good Sam University Free Community Lecture Series, at Captain Bill’s Restaurant in Bay Shore. Two hundred guests attended their choice of workshops which offered such information as stress
management practices and how to read food labels. Participants uncovered the truth about diet foods and weight-loss plans including a discussion on surgical options for weight loss. The program included presentations on the concepts of bioindividuality and the importance of creating a personalized diet plan by Chef Keith DiLauro, a graduate of
the French Culinary Institution in New York City, and WCBS-TV health reporter Katie McGee. The program concluded with a cooking demonstration and tasting of Chef Keith’s delicious and healthy fare of seasonal, local, fresh and organic foods. Proudly Serving The Community Since 1953!
By: Tyler Cianciulli The leaves are returning, the water is warming and newly born deer are showing their small heads. As with every April, Fire Island is abuzz with life. After a trip to our barrier island, one can immediately conclude that not everything has been drastically altered by last year’s Hurricane Sandy. At first glance, everything seems as if it was in shambles; but upon further inspection, it is evident that nature is beginning to make a comeback! Vegetation is already starting to fill in all of the damaged areas, and even with the ongoing construction, animals are finally making their way
back out of hiding, onto the beaches and into the water. Seagulls are increasing in number and it seems as if they are thriving. Piping Plover populations have bounced back to a healthy number, considering their spot on the endangered species list. Taking a stroll down the beach, one can already spot patches of Beach Heather, a very common yellow plant, dotting the shoreline. Accounts of whale sightings are becoming less and less frequent, signaling the end to a cold winter, and the beginning of a beautiful summer. All in all, life is finally returning to Fire Island, coincidentally just in time for Earth Day, on April 22nd. Spring is a very
crucial part in the health of Fire Island, as the beaches elongate and erosion is reversed. This cyclic trend will lead to more room for beachgoers in the 2013 season. Nature isn’t the only thing on the mend after Hurricane Sandy; establishments, such as Maguire’s Bayfront Restaurant in Ocean Beach, are getting ready to open up their doors. There is no doubt that Fire Island will be in “fighting shape” and ready for the masses as we kick off the season with a very solid spring. Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Junior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com

Being Domestic By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
SPECIAL VISITOR - The children in all of the classes at Cleary School were treated I am not a domestic person to a very special visitor recently. Everyone had a hoppin’ good time! by nature. Or, at least, I never
CONGRATULATIONS TO JoAnn Mancini Of Lindenhurst WHO WON A FAMILY 4-PACK OF TICKETS TO MAMMA MIA ON BROADWAY FROM SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR LOOK FOR MORE CONTESTS EVERY WEEK
thought I was. The whole cooking, cleaning, doing laundry thing just seemed so… boring and tedious. I never wanted to learn, promising my mom that, once the time came for me to move out on my own, I would simply hire a gourmet chef and a maid. Voilá! Problem solved. Right. Well, back in the real world, while the prospect of cooking for myself seemed slightly intriguing, I always had visions of water boiling over onto the stove, clouds of smoke billowing out of the oven…that sort of thing. Laundry was another issue.
Too many compartments, dials, buttons… lights, whites, darks… bleach, fabric softener, water temperatures, load sizes… delicate cycles, special washing and drying instructions… Wouldn’t it be easier to just take everything to the dry cleaners and have them sort it out? Sure, minus the $500 weekly bill maybe. Being a bit of a neat freak – okay, maybe slightly OCD – I’ve actually always enjoyed the vacuuming and dusting part of things, organizing, categorizing... all that fun stuff. Everything but cleaning the windows. I seem to have a small issue with – how would you put it – not making them look even worse than before I touched them. Well, as it turns out, when
you actually come to the point in life when you must learn to do all of these necessary things for yourself – you know, just in case the maid calls in sick one day – it’s really not as hard as it looks. A little reading comprehension, a touch of common sense and lots of advice from Mom & Dad… with some trial and error, most things turn out just fine. That’s not to say I haven’t let a pot or two of water boil a little too ferociously, or had a couple of things get a bit too well done in the oven. But rest assured, no fire departments had to be called in the making of my culinary creations. A small victory. Now if I could only get that fuzzy sweater to be fuzzy again…

Long Island’s Best is a comprehensive arts-ineducation program that integrates experiences in The Heckscher Museum and the high school art classroom, culminating with the presentation of students’ original works juried by a museum professional. Over the past 17 years, this program has grown to become a prestigious opportunity; it is the only juried exhibition on Long Island that offers high school students the opportunity to show their artwork in an art museum. The three-week student exhibition features work by art students in grades
9 through 12 from public and private schools throughout Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Museum educators work in partnership with art teachers from participating schools as students find inspiration in artwork on view during the school year. Students learn to make connections between artwork on view in the Museum and their own experiences. Each student then selects a work of art in one of the exhibitions to inspire an original work of art for submission. This year, the Museum received 288 works of art for jurying. Curator
Lisa Chalif has selected 80 works of art in various media for display. The object label alongside each artwork includes an artist statement written by the student to explain the thought process and artistic journey from conception to completion. “Congratulations to Lorelei Olk, Jackie Christensen, and Ariana Garrett for having their artwork accepted to the Long Island’s Best at the Heckscher Museum of Art!” stated Sayville Art teacher Mr. Evan Hammer, adding. “Ariana won the Renzo S. Bianchi Scholarship Award for her photograph of the Empire State Building.”

With tight financial budgets, every little bit counts for municipalities; even when it’s your local fire department. The West Sayville-Oakdale Fire District and the West Sayville Fire Department were fortunate to recently get some help in that regard when FM Global, an international provider of commercial and industrial property insurance, awarded the fire district a fire prevention grant in the amount of $2,600 as part of the company’s annual effort to help local organizations more effectively prevent fire in their communities. Mr. David Velapoldi, a loss prevention engineer with FM Global’s New York Operations office, was on hand at the April 2nd meeting of the Board of Fire Commissioners to make the presentation. Gladly accepting the check on behalf of the fire department was Chief Robert Doucet along with members of the Board of Fire Commissioners and Fire District Manager Deborah Themann, author of the application which received favorable consideration from FM Global. In turning over the much appreciated funds Mr. Velapoldi explained that FM Global annually awards fire prevention grants to fire service agencies all over the globe. Locally, West Sayville joins a number of other New York metropolitan area organizations that have benefited from the company’s unending efforts to
prevent unwanted fires. Chief Doucet and Commissioner Gary A. Schaum both expressed the gratitude of their respective groups for the generous financial support provided by FM Global. Doucet then stated “These funds will be put to good use
in bolstering our fire prevention programs, especially at our local elementary schools, through the purchase of materials to compliment the safety message we bring to them. We also intend to use a portion of the grant to purchase battery powered residential smoke detectors so when we respond to an emergency in a home where there are no smoke detectors – even if there is no fire -

We’ll do the same in those instances when we encounter inoperative smoke detectors in a dwell-ing.” “The experience of the firefighters who deliver our fire prevention programs to elementary school age children has shown the kids all look forward to receiving the ever-popular plastic fire helmet at the end of the lesson, said Fire District Manager Themann. “We plan to purchase enough of them to make certain everyone goes home with one. Although many may view the plastic helmet as a throwaway toy, we believe it enhances the child’s ability to retain the fire-safe behavior messages we deliver and serves as a constant reminder of how to avoid fires as well as the actions they must take should a fire occur in their home.” Through this grant, FM Global, the West Sayville Fire Department and the West Sayville-Oakdale Fire District will continue their respective efforts to proactively prevent fires in the community and safeguard the public.

Prepare a deck or patio for entertaining Few things are better than having a functional and beautiful outdoor space to entertain guests. Having a great outdoor space enables a person to host parties or intimate gatherings all year long. Establishing an entertaining space and maintaining that space are essential when planning another year of fun in the sun. There are many things homeowners can do to ensure their entertaining space is safe and functional. As the season approaches, include some landscaping and decorating components to your preparatory plans to make the space as comfortable and aesthetically appealing as possible. Here are a few key tips for readying your yard for entertaining possibilities. Expand on these basics to customize an area for your unique needs. * Check the area for any needed repairs. Prior to your first entertaining session, look over the deck or patio to take note of any flaws that may present safety hazards. Are there any loose railings? Are all screws and nails flush so they do not cause tripping? Are there any cracks in concrete or loose patio blocks? Be sure to remedy all of the repairs needed to ensure guests will be safe. If you are unsure of any structural deficits, consult with a contractor. * Hire a reputable contractor. If you are just laying the groundwork for a new patio or deck, it is important to get the necessary permits and then hire a person who has been properly vetted. Check qualifications and licensing before hiring a contractor and ask to view a portfolio of his or her previous work. Word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted friends and family members are good, and you can also double-check qualifications by contacting the Better Business Bureau to see if any complaints have been lodged or use a service such as Angie’s List to read reviews of his or her work.
for when the sun is too uncomfortable to make sitting outside enjoyable. Similarly, have a sunny area where people can soak up a few rays or dry off after a dip in the spa or pool. Don’t forget to establish a spot for the kids to converge with scaleddown amenities. * Consider a fireplace or fire pit. For centuries man (and woman) has gathered around fire for socialization and a means to warming up. Having a backyard fireplace, pit or chiminea is a conversation-starter, a decorative focal point, and a functional tool to extend the number of seasons in which outdoor entertaining can take place. Place the fire wisely and with concern for safety. It should be out of the way of foot traffic, but central enough so that it can be a gathering point. * Invest in quality outdoor furniture. Today’s yards are extensions of a home’s interior. Guests no longer want to sit on uncomfortable metal or plastic furniture. There are many different outdoor sofas and chairs that are as stylish as they are comfortable. These pieces can be matched to the decor inside your home for a cohesive look. * Accessorize. Consider the creature comforts of indoors and mimic that outdoors. Don’t shy away from hanging artwork on an exterior wall or using urns or pottery to decorate the space. Weather-resistant materials ensure everything from clocks to televisions can be used outdoors. Think about having an entire set of serving dishes and other entertaining items for the outdoors. When refurbishing outdoor entertaining areas, emphasize comfort, safety and functionality.
Did you know?

Restoring your property after a long winter One of the best things about the dawn of spring and the return of warmer weather is the chance to get out of the house and get some fresh air. For homeowners, this is the perfect opportunity to assess any damage the previous months did to yards and develop a plan restore properties.
* Employ a pre-emergent weed killer. Homeowners who routinely spend their summers agonizing over weeds throughout the yard should consider applying a pre-emergent weed killer around the beginning of spring. It’s important to do so around the end of March or early April, when the weeds have not yet had a chance to grow. When applying, follow the dosage instructions provided by the product’s manufacturer. Such instructions often recommend a second application right before summer begins.
* Don’t jump the gun. The first warm day of spring might seem like a great time get out in the yard and get your hands dirty. But it’s best to wait until the grass has completely dried out before getting to work. Raking on wet grass increases the risk of tearing out grass, which * Remove thatch. How to edge a lawn Edging a lawn is a springtime rite of passage for many homeowners. When winter has come and gone, many lawns are left in need of some serious maintenance, including edging. Well-defined edges around the yard make the yard look more organized and better maintained. And edging is relatively easy, especially for those homeowners with a smaller yard. Edging can be time-consuming for those with more property, but when done properly, edging is definitely worth the effort. * Remove debris from the areas you plan to edge. Before you even begin to edge, be sure to remove any debris from those areas that need edging. Debris, including rocks, twigs or the kids’ toys, left lying around can be kicked up when you’re edging, potentially causing injury to you or someone standing nearby. * Purchase safety goggles. Even if you have removed all visible debris, there still may be some items hidden in the grass. These items can be kicked up and hit you in the eye, so purchase some safety goggles and be sure to wear them whenever you’re edging. As an added precaution, keep kids and others away from any areas you’re edging so they aren’t injured by any unseen debris that
gets kicked up while you’re working. * Check your tools. Edging can be done by using a gas-powered edger or a string trimmer. Before you begin to edge, inspect these tools to ensure they’re capable of handling the task at hand. Inspect the blades on a gas-powered edger to make sure they haven’t dulled since their most recent use. If they are dull, sharpen them before you start to edge. When using a string trimmer, make sure you have enough string on hand to complete the project. String trimmers use a particular kind of string, so visit your local lawn care or hardware store if you don’t feel like you have enough. * Position your edger properly. Once you have given your tools the green light, it’s time to start edging. When you begin, make sure the edger is between the sidewalk or driveway and the edge of the lawn, placing the wheel of the edger on the sidewalk or driveway and then pushing and pulling the edger until you have created a clear edge. If you have never edged before, you may want to practice on smaller, more isolated areas until you become comfortable operating the edger.

Collazo and Michael Lombardo came prepared with a multi-media presentation about financial issues that are relevant to young students. According to Mrs. Fusco the TFCU representatives “… came to educate our seniors on the basics of banking. A few of the topics covered were loans, interest rates, credit scores, different types of accounts, fees and the difference between credit unions and for-profit banks.” The students interacted with excellent
questions, particularly those who currently earn a paycheck and sought to learn more about how to save, and borrow, in the future. As these senior students look forward to a college education, and realize its cost, students could been seen taking copious notes, and asking important questions. Connetquot HS Principal Mr. Gregory Murtha attended one afternoon session, and was impressed by the presentation, and the students’ attention.
TROOP SUPPORT - Connetquot School District’s John Pearl Elementary School students recently collected supplies, toiletries and snacks to send to U.S. military troops overseas. The students also wrote letters to accompany the donation boxes and thanked the servicemen for their heroic work. Cynthia Ventura, President of the Long Island Chapter of Blue Star Moms visited John Pearl Elementary to collect the donations along with U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Jacholwidik and now-retired U.S. Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Schenk.
On Tuesday, March 5th, over 300 members of the Edward J. Bosti Elementary School community attended the first From The Heart Thank You Dinner. Organized by Bosti Principal Dr. Lisa Ihne, her staff, and the school’s dedicated Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), it’s purpose, according to Dr. Ihne was to “… simply say ‘thank you’ to the parents, as recognition for all they do the students.” Tasty Italian cuisine, beverages and dessert were prepared & served by members of the faculty and PTA. Dr. Ihne added that “… tonight’s dinner was a huge success, and
I owe a tremendous ‘thank you’ to the staff that worked tirelessly to prepare for the event. The dinner was our way of expressing our gratitude to the Bosti families for their support throughout the year. It also provided an opportunity for the staff and families to come together in a friendly, casual atmosphere. Special ‘thanks’ to our dinner’s chairperson, Allison Weber for such a great night.” Students joined their parents, teachers and Bosti administrators for a fun night out, as they enjoyed one another’s company, as well as so many home-made treats. Clobbering The Competition
Congratulations to the Sayville Robotics Team, the Mechanical Animals, (comprised of both High School and Middle School students) for finishing as a semifinalist in the 2013 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Regional Robotics Competition held at Hofstra University on April 4th-6th. “The Mechanical Animals, in an alliance with
Sag Harbor and PlainviewOld Bethpage clobbered the competition in the Quarter Final rounds,” Technology Department Chairperson Bryan Coon stated proudly, “and finished as semifinalist in the 2013 FIRST Regional Robotic Competition!” The FIRST Robotics Competition is a national program that challenges teams of students and their mentors to design and
build a 130 pound robot in a six-week timeframe using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a regional robotics competition. The Mechanical Animals entered the SBPLI (SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island) Regional Robotics Competition held at Hofstra University.
Marion Blumenthal Lazan visits over 100 schools and talks to thousands of students across America, and even Europe, about her life as a survivor of the Holocaust. Lazan is an author, lecturer and a believer that tolerance, respect and love can solve many of the world’s problems. She developed that philosophy during a difficult life that almost ended at the BergenBelsen concentration camp in Germany, during WWII. Mrs. Lazan was invited to speak to the students and staff of the OakdaleBohemia Middle School in Oakdale, NY, on March 12th, by principal Ms. Susan Bailey, YFS Coordinator Dr. Laraine Pincus and the OBMS Parent-Teacher Association. Mrs. Lazan discussed her life, and book entitled Four Perfect Pebbles, beginning with her early years in Bremen, Germany and the happy life she shared with her parents and extended family. With the rise of the Nazi’s in the 1930’s and the passage of discriminatory laws restricting the rights of its citizens, including its Jewish population, her life began to change, and not for the better. The family attempted to flee Nazi persecution, and made it to Holland. But in 1940 the Nazi’s conquered
that small nation, and for next six years her family lived in refugee, transit and prison camps including Westerbork in Holland, and Bergen-Belsen in Germany. In the camps Marion and her family were separated, and forced to work as slave laborers. She described the horrible conditions they endured, and remembered those that died from starvation, disease, and the gas chambers. By the time the camps were liberated by the Russians in 1945, Marion was 10 years old, and weighed just 35 (thirtyfive) pounds. Her mom also survived, but weighed less than 85 pounds. While Marion, her mom and brother were reunited, her father died just days after the liberation of the camp. By the end of WWII, the Nazi’s were responsible for the deaths of over 6 million Jews. Marion’s story takes a positive turn when a refugee organization arranges for she, her mom and brother to emigrate to Peoria, Illinois, to begin a new life in America. Eventually, she mastered the English language and graduated high school #8 in a class of almost 300 students! She would meet, and eventually marry, a New Yorker attending Bradley University by the
name of Nathaniel Lazan. They have now been married for 60 years! This highly respected speaker asks her audiences to be tolerant of others and not stereotype based on religion, color or race. Mrs. Lazan stresses the importance of positive thinking, creativity and inner strength to overcome adversity. She has spoken to more than one million listeners over 27 years. Her message is so powerful that a high school is named in her honor, in her birthplace of Bremen, Germany. Many of the OBMS English classes read Mrs. Lazan’s book, Four Perfect Pebbles, and were eager to talk to her about her experiences, and specific events in the book. Ms. Bailey thanked Marion Blumenthal Lazan for sharing her powerful message of tolerance and respect for one another. Mrs. Lazan thanked the students for their attention, and school officials for the opportunity to address such thoughtful children. She ended her presentation by encouraging the students to be considerate of one another, tolerant of those who might appear, or speak, differently, and to respect the rights of everyone they meet.
