On April 3rd, Briscoe Protective Systems Inc. announced the winners of the Bert Briscoe Memorial Scholarship. The recipients are three students, related to members of the Suffolk County Fire District Managers Association (S.C.F.D.M.A.). Megan Sunderman, a student at William Floyd High School, received a $500 scholarship. Runners-up included Paul M. Adams, Jr., who is currently attending Adelphi University, and Daniel Scura, who is

a student at the State University of New York at Cortland; they will each receive $250. Megan and Paul were given a tour of the company and presented with a framed certificate, a scholarship check and a luncheon in their honor. Daniel was unable to attend the event, and a luncheon will be given in his honor at a future date. The winners were chosen to receive this award based on their financial need, community service, career plans and the exemplification of

Briscoe’s core value of giving back. The scholarship is named in memory of Bert Briscoe, the grandfather of Robert P. Williams, President of Briscoe Protective Systems. Larry Santangelo, President, S.C.F.D.M.A. and Manager, Sayville Fire District, was instrumental in bringing this scholarship opportunity to the Association. students how the pipework was run underground as well as the air ducts that circulate the fresh air in the building,” said Mrs. Anderson. “Our final stop was to see the solar array that has been operating at the High School.” From this vantage point, the students caught a glimpse into the future of where sustainable energies can lead and where environmental studies might actually take them. They also were highly influenced by this realworld application. Coming back off the roof, the students were directed to the science hallway where a television monitor displayed the output of electricity and how the solar panels were contributing to the electrical demand of the High School. “It was impressive to see an application to concepts that students have been reading and learning about in class!” concluded Mrs. Anderson, adding, “A big thank you to Mr. Stiffler for all his cooperation and time!”

“Not only are we saving the environment by not burning fossil fuels, but we are saving the district money as well!” AP Environmental Science teacher Sonja Anderson explained to her AP Environmental Science (APES) students as they explored Sayville High School’s renewable energies and cost-saving techniques which Sayville School District has been employing. Mrs. Anderson’s students have been learning in class about energy efficiency and renewable energy, but recently, they were afforded a very special opportunity to witness first-hand such an environmentally friendly operation by visiting the solar array on the roof of their very own High School building. Thanks to the guiding assistance of Head Custodian, Jim Striffler, the students enjoyed a “behind the scenes tour” that started in the boiler room. “Mr. Striffler discussed the boiler systems and the types of energy we use to heat the building. This April marks a full year since Islip Town launched its Art in the Hall project. This project features a collection of work from selected artists. These pieces can range from photographs and screen prints, physical art such as oils or watercolors, or digital art and mixed mediums. These collections are usually between 15 and 20 pieces and each artist’s work is featured for a two-month period. A reception is held in conjunction with each new exhibit, promoting and publicizing the works that are showcased and celebrating the efforts of each outstanding artist.

The works are displayed in the corridors of Islip Town Hall for all residents and employees to admire. The Town has a display system that provides versatility to accommodate all sizes and shapes of frames. This system makes it easy to rotate art work and does not damage any piece of work or the walls they hang on. “This project helps beautify the Town’s main Town Hall building while providing exposure for up and coming artists to our residents. It is an honor to work with so many talented individuals who have expanded the Town of Islip’s sense of culture,”

said Supervisor Tom Croci. The Town works with the Islip Arts Council, who relies on the Islip Art Committee to select each artist. Submissions are open to everyone with a submission fee of $35, or $25 if you are a member of the Islip Arts Council. Once selected, the artist will be featured at an opening ceremony. Each artist is required to list a price for anyone interested in purchasing a piece of art, or list them as “NFS,” not for sale. A companion catalog is available during each exhibit that lists titles and descriptions, prices, and background and contact information for each artist. “The Art in the Hall project is a wonderful opportunity for any artist to display their artwork. It gives the Town a unique chance to advertise these most deserving artists and increase art awareness throughout our community,” said Lynda Moran, Executive Director of the Islip Arts Council.

By: Tyler Cianciulli Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year. That means in 2013, in New York State alone, nearly 3,000 children will be diagnosed with Autism. For high school students like myself, this really hits close to home. For the second consecutive year, Friends of Port Rowing held the annual Row for Autism. Waking up at 4 am., hundreds of students, parents and coaches flocked to Port Washington to take part in one of the most unique fundraisers ever to hit Long Island. Approximately one

dozen of Long Island’s finest rowing teams fundraised and competed on April 13th in an effort to raise awareness and help find a cure for this lifelong ailment. Each Rowing Team fundraised hundreds of dollars for the cause by selling items that were created to spread knowledge about the effects and treatment of Autistic children. When the donations had concluded, the teams raced. This 1750 meter course was designed to test both our minds and our endurance. As a whole we were united, but secretly everyone wanted to bring home a gold medal. Unfortunately, my team,

St. John the Baptist DHS, didn’t bring home a medal, but we still fared well. My boat, the Varsity 8-man placed 4th, competitively. Many of our other boats also did well. For the second year in a row, a group of high school kids merged against a disorder that will hopefully not be an issue in the future. Being of able minds and bodies, we did what we knew best and helped to promote knowledge and resolution to an issue that affects everyone. With any luck, our work, perseverance and donations will help to bring an end to a cause that influences so many.

Tyler Cianciulli of Islip is a Junior at St. John the Baptist High School. Please feel free to share your feedback with him at: tylercianciulli@gmail.com

We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead, some believe there’s something better So we go on and make our plans in the scheme of things and then we tend to worry about the future till it’s over And all that wasted time was spent for something we could not prevent But pretty soon they will invent a pill for that Doesn’t really matter when you take a vow to live your life and see it through The nature of the universe is moving onward within and without you This I’m told is truth We’re all hanging by a thread but still we weave our lives together Though some day we will be dead some believe there’s something better So we go on and entertain Paint the closet – hide the stain Just ignore the endless pain - keep the closet bolted We’ve got plenty more pills for that We’re all hanging by a thread and pretty soon our lives are over But does that mean it’s the end?

The Complaint Dept.

245661N0424

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan They say the customer is always right, and yet… I recently had the pleasure of contacting the DMV regarding an error in the address printed on my registration. Silly me, I had sent the renewal in by snail mail rather than utilize their online services for this one thing, and then had proceeded to wait approximately three weeks for my new registration sticker to arrive. Relieved as I was to eventually receive it in time, something made me examine the information extra closely – and there it was, the typo. As per the instructions on the form, I immediately contacted my local DMV call center to report the mistake, figuring a new one would need to be issued. After waiting on hold for, oh,

about 20 minutes or so, I was finally transferred to a human – who promptly transferred me to yet another “department” (the complaint department?) for further assistance. More hold music. At least another 15 minutes spent waiting. And waiting... And then, finally, a voice came on the line. I explained the issue. Silence. “Hello?” I said, thinking perhaps the line had gone dead. “Yeah. So what’s the problem? You got it, didn’t you?” was the reply I was met with. “Um, yes, I received it, but the address is incorrect… and it says to contact you to correct it…?” I was beyond perplexed at having to explain any further at this point. “Yeah well, it’s correct on your license, and all they really pay attention to is your name and street number – the town doesn’t matter.” Okay then. “Ok,” I said, “Well then I guess

can you at least change it internally in your system, just so it’s correct for the future?” A giant sigh of exasperation came through the receiver. “Yeah. I guess so. You want the typo fixed?” (Wasn’t that what I just said?) “Um, yes, if it’s not too much trouble.” (Which, apparently, it was.) I then heard the pounding of fingers on the keyboard. I don’t think it would have been possible for this woman to make more noise typing three letters if she tried. “Is that all?” Oh yes, that was all. Why would I ever choose to prolong this conversation for even another second? Honestly, if the hold time wasn’t so extensive, I would have hung up and called back just to reach a different customer service rep. But, with my luck, this woman was probably the only one on duty that day.

While reading is always the focus during the fourweek PARP (Parents as Reading Partners Program) activities at Sunrise Drive Elementary School, the Sayville students had an added incentive with the Reading Is Out Of This World! theme. “We focused on a space-aliens theme and incorporated it into the four, weekly readings, which included a BINGO board game and a short writing piece,” explained PARP commitment

member and Sunrise Drive parent Cheryl Como. Participating students’ names were also drawn for weekly book prizes! Once the students successfully completed and submitted their PARP weekly reading sheets, they were invited to attend the culminating activity—a laser show, where they each received packets containing prizes. What was most exciting, however, for those PARP students was the rare opportunity to “suit up”

Playing Professionally

their special guest, Sayville Superintendent Dr. Schartner, for outer space all part of the theme. Each eligible student received a piece of duct tape to tape Dr. Shartner to a chair and create a ducttape space suit. “Dr. Shartner was a very good sport, and the kids loved duct taping him!” said Mrs. Como. PLAY BALL - Suffolk County Legislator Rob Calarco, joined with New York State Assemblyman and Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert to celebrate the Opening Day Ceremonies for the 2013 season of the Medford Youth Athletic Association (MYAA). MYAA offers a girls’ softball league, a boys’ baseball league and a T-ball league to the children living in Medford.

Congratulations to Domenica Hodak, who tried out for the Washington Spirit as a Discovery Pick and made the team. She is playing for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) squad during the inaugural season of the league. “I am so excited to play in the NWSL,” she said. “I’m so glad a professional league for women’s soccer is back and I’m excited for the experience it will give me. The players on my team and the other teams are going to help improve my game and grow as a player.” The 21-year-old from West Sayville played for the Olympic Development Program (ODP) of the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) for five years and the Region 1 ODP Team for four years. 86% of the American players in NWSL were members of ODP as teenagers. Under the tutelage of

head coach Paul Riley, Domenica played for the Albertson Fury 90 of the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), helping lead the Fury to four State Open Cup titles. Using her nickname, Coach Riley commented, “Minn’s competitive nature makes her a very good pro prospect. She is bright, intelligent and reads the game really well. Love her subtle touch and she always makes good decisions on the ball. Minn has a pro mentality and is tough as nails. We are extremely proud of her and her positional versatility will make her a valuable weapon for Washington.” She also played for Riley when she donned the red and navy blue of the Long Island Fury of the Women’s Premier Soccer League in 2007 and 2008 against opponents a decade older than her. Before playing for the Fury, Domenica played for the LIJSL’s Bayport

Soccer Club and then for the LIJSL’s Massapequa Crunch for one year. She was a three-year All-State and two-year Newsday All-Long Island selection at Sayville High School in addition to being team captain for two years. She was also twice named the Suffolk County Small School Player of the Year. Domenica’s varsity coaches at Sayville High School were Beth Bolger in the latter part of her junior year and Joe Nasta during her senior season. As a freshman, sophomore and at the start of her junior year, John Schroeder, who was also her first coach in ODP, coached the Golden Flashes until his sudden death in the middle of that season. “It’s crazy to think that the last time I spoke to him, it was about which college I should go to and I was listening to his advice,” she reminisced. That advice led her to the University of Maryland. Her college life as a Terrapins defender was eventful as, after seeing action as a freshman and sophomore, she played nearly every minute of every game as a junior and senior, being named to the 2012 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Tournament Team as Maryland made the final. In a nice twist of fate, Domenica made her professional debut for Washington in their inaugural game against the Boston Breakers on April 14, which would have been Schroeder’s 70th birthday. The game resulted in a 1-1 tie.

Local H.S. Students Race For Autism

contact 516.541.1443.

Autism is a debilitating mental disorder that will affect 1 in every 88 children born this year.
