Mr. Delio, Youth & Family Services coordinator Mrs. Eileen McAlpine, Phys Ed instructors and teacher volunteers had arranged for the students and staff to create and photograph a giant, living peace symbol on the athletic field.

2013 Youth Conservation Program is the perfect way to introduce children to hunting ethics and to teach them how to be responsible hunters.”

Each class is limited to 30 participants and selections are made by a panel that reviews a 75word application.

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive their Hunter Education Training Certificate or Bow Hunter Education Training Certificate.

These certificates are required in order to purchase a hunting license.

Enrollment in the class is open to all boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 16 who have not yet taken either their Hunter Education or Bow Hunter Education course.

Under Governor Cuomo’s Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative, a two-day, hands-on programs on hunting safety will be offered in April by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s (DEC) Sportsman Education unit, the agency announced today.

The Hunter Safety Course will be offered on April 20th and 21st at the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club in Manorville.

Both events are being sponsored by the DEC’s Sportsman Education unit, the New York State Conservation Officers Association and the Peconic River Sportsman’s Club.

The Open for Hunting and Fishing Initiative is an effort to improve recreational activities for in-state and out-ofstate sportsmen and sportswomen and to boost tourism opportunities throughout the state. It

Curtin is currently an Adjunct Instructor in the Ammerman Campus philosophy department, having started teaching at Suffolk County Community College in the spring 2012 semester.

He was also one of the most prolific and influential scholars of George Berkeley, the 18th Century Irish philosopher. Mr. Berkeley is perhaps best known as the author of the classic treatise, The Myth of Metaphor, first published

by Yale University Press in 1962.

Professor Turbayne’s devotion to advancing understanding of Berkeley is reflected in the numerous articles he authored, his producing six major editions of Berkeley’s works, and the creation and funding of the International Berkeley Essay Prize.

Suffolk County Community College Adjunct Instructor of Philosophy, Thomas Curtin, was recently announced as the winner of the 2013 Colin and Ailsa Turbayne International Berkeley Essay Prize Competition for his essay Berkeley’s Conception of Causal Power.

Essays were required to be new and unpublished, written in English and not exceed 5,000 words in length. All references to Berkeley were directed to be to Luce/Jessop, and a MLA or similar standard for notes was followed.

Submissions were blind reviewed and judged by members of a review board selected by the Department of Philosophy at the University of Rochester. One winner was selected.

Some years before their deaths, Professor and Mrs. Colin Turbayne established an International Berkeley Essay Prize competition in cooperation with the Philosophy Department

Little Mermaid

The Friends of Connetquot Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the Friends were awarded a NY State OPRHP Municipal Grant of $150,000 through the Long Island Regional Economic Development Council. The grant will allow the Friends to continue their efforts to restore the historic Trout Hatchery and Nicoll Grist Mill at the Connetquot River State Park Preserve.

For the last seven years, the Friends have been working on the restoration of both buildings. Work on the Grist Mill, one of the earliest structures at the Preserve, is being completed in stages. The State grant will allow for the completion of the structural framework, one of the final phases of the project. Once complete, the Mill will be a functioning mill and a museum dedicated to increasing the

public’s understanding of Long Island’s social and industrial history and the Preserve’s role within that framework.

The Trout Hatchery, one of the first in the country, was closed in 2009 due to an outbreak of infectious pancreatic necrosis, a virus detrimental to juvenile trout but not humans.

The closure’s impact on the Preserve and the local community was devastating: Preserve visitorship saw a significant drop that affected Preserve revenues and hurt local businesses.

Seeing the need, the Friends are spearheading the Hatchery’s revitalization.

Board member Richard Remmer said that the grant will create a source of diseasefree water and ensure that certain biosecurity improvements are made to the facility.

“Through best watershed management practices, ‘green’ technology, and the use of well water to create ‘super clean’ water for trout breeding, the Hatch House project will reinstate trout breeding at Connetquot, and will attract visitors back to the site, for both recreational and educational activities, all while preserving the Long Island environment.”

Friends Board Chair Robert Labuski, speaking on behalf of the Board, has said that the Friends “are grateful to the LI Regional Economic Development Council, our local State Assemblymen and Senators, the staff at the LI Region office of Parks, and the many who wrote letters of support for our application. The community’s support was crucial to our success.”

Perception By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Perception is everything.

Reality is secondary.

Seems like it should be the other way around, doesn’t it? And yet, how often do we form our opinions of someone based solely upon an initial, sometimes completely skewed, impression? Feel vs. facts.

Sometimes, a gut feeling is the right one. Other times, more careful consideration is needed. But how to determine the difference…that is the question.

I have often been told that I form opinions about others far too quickly, leaving little room for the actual process of becoming acquainted. It’s basically black and white, no

Not a great way to be, I’ll be the first to admit; especially because, what happens when the tables are turned and someone makes the exact same snap judgment about you? Not a fair assessment, is it?

I’m not sure what changed over the years. I don’t think I was always like this. But lately, my level of impatience and intolerance has grown by leaps and bounds. I’d like to think it all started with my experiences with various members of the fast food industry and their general level of incompetence at the drive-thru. But perhaps that was just the trigger.

In any case, I do take exception when others exhibit

the same level of annoyance without taking the time to truly get to know me. This has caused me to take a step back and reevaluate others’ perceptions of me lately.

What’s that they say about never judging a person until you have walked a mile in their shoes? True words indeed.

Perhaps we should all take that step back and not rush to judge. Sure, some initial impressions are spot on – but what harm does it do to take a little extra time to either confirm or refute that gut feeling? None, so far as I can tell.

And who knows, you might just find a new friend in the process.

Student Achievement Awards

The Town of Islip Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs will be recognizing the achievements of many of our outstanding and talented high school students at the annual Student Achievement Awards Celebration. This year’s event will take place on Wednesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. in the Town Board Room at 655 Main Street, Islip, NY. This year achievement awards will be presented to students in grades 9

through 12 who have made significant contributions to the community or who have excelled in a specific academic area. All public and private high schools within the Town of Islip are invited to submit nominations.

To nominate a student, schools must submit a Nomination Form and it must be received by Friday, March 22, 2013.

Nomination Forms and Criteria sheets have been mailed to all schools within the Town and are also

READ WITH THE CAT - Connetquot Central School District’s Helen B. Duffield Elementary School recently received a visit from the Cat In The Hat to kick off the 9th annual celebration of the Read Across America program and the Parents As Reading Partners (PARP) program. During two morning assemblies organized by the school’s principal, Mrs. Lisa Farrell, teachers dressed up in Dr. Seuss themed costumes to celebrate the author’s birthday and the Cat in the Hat read to students in the auditorium. Following the assembly, students met with their buddies in different classes to read and share Dr. Seuss books as part of the three-week PARP program.

Dr. Gail Cholden, Principal of Connetquot’s Arthur Premm Alternative Preschool, joined with students and staff as they celebrated National Preschool Fitness Day on January 28th!

Cholden said that “… the students, with the help of their teachers, physical therapists and occupational therapists, enjoyed a bit of healthy eating, yoga stretching

& freeze dancing, along with movement to dancing and a fitness, as well as an obstacle course today.”

It was evident from the smiles on the children’s faces, and the encouraging words of their teachers, that it was a fun, learning, day for all.

Participation in National Fitness Day acknowledges the importance of developing healthy lifestyle habits in preschool

children. Serious concerns about childhood obesity and other physical ailments among youngsters makes an awareness of healthy habits of regular exercise and sound eating imperative.

Arthur Premm students, and staff, enjoyed a day filled with learning about healthy eating, and funfilled activities, they can continue at home, with mom & dad!

Advancing To Next Round

Longwood High School has advanced to the second round of MSG Varsity’s, The Challenge, and will take on North Babylon High School on Monday, March 25th at 6:30 p.m. on Cablevision’s Optimum, Channel 14.

Longwood High School is joined by 15 other schools from Suffolk County on Long Island as they progress through the Regional Rounds in trying to qualify for the Tri-State Championship Playoffs.

Back for his fourth season as host of “The Challenge” is Jared Cotter, host of “MSG Varsity’s Talent Show” and a popular semi-finalist from American Idol. Cotter will serve as moderator, testing competing teams on their knowledge of history, arts and literature, current events, math, and science

in front of a live studio audience.

The Longwood High School team is represented by: Frederick Brunn, Indranil Mitra, Daniel Chaffkin (Captain), Joseph Dequarto, (Alternates) Ethan Kelly and Zoha Naseer. The academic advisor is Dr. Lucinda Hemmick and Jamal Walcott.

“The Challenge” includes 192 high schools from the entire tri-state area — Long Island (with Nassau and Suffolk as two distinct regions), the Bronx, Brooklyn, Westchester/Lower Hudson Valley, New Jersey and Connecticut. Long Island will be represented by 32 high schools from Nassau County and 32 high schools from Suffolk County. A new matchup can been seen every

Sunday through Friday at 6:30 p.m., on MSG Varsity, Cablevision’s Optimum Channel 14.

Participating schools advance through a series of elimination rounds, with one school in each region being crowned regional champion and winning $2,500 for their school.

The winning teams from each region go on to “The Challenge” Championship where they square off in a Tri-State Showdown. The school awarded the title of Tri-State Champion will receive $10,000 in prize money and each student participating in the final “Challenge” Championship game will receive $500.

VISIT FROM ABE - Connetquot Central School District’s Edith L. Slocum Elementary 5th grade students recently had a chance to meet and interact with the nation’s 16th president, “Abraham Lincoln.” Dressed in full costume complete with his infamous beard and stovepipe hat, Lou Delbianco (Abe Lincoln) educated the students on Lincoln’s life, accomplishments and profound impact on our country. President Lincoln took questions from the eager 5th grade students at the conclusion of his presentation.

Scout Presented With Emblem

The first eleven points of the Boy Scout Law must be demonstrated in order to go from one rank to the next, including Eagle. The 12th point - A Scout Is Reverent - can be demonstrated in a variety of ways including the earning of the religious award of the Scout’s individual faith.

As with all the religious emblems, these are not an award for Scouting skills, but rather an emblem authorized by the Boy Scouts of America to be worn on the Scout’s uniform after satisfactory completion of the necessary requirements.

GUIDE DOG EDUCATION - Connetquot School District’s Idle Hour Elementary recently welcomed the Guide Dog Foundation of Smithtown to teach students how guide dogs help blind citizens. Mrs. Pat Valle and guide dog Major showed the students how the Guide Dog Foundation trains dogs to be helpful companions to the blind and to veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Major performed several tricks and displayed his training in front of the students. Mrs. Valle answered all of the students’ questions and allowed them to pet Major on their way back to class.

Hundreds of attendees filled the pews at St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre on March 10th for a special Mass of Celebration to mark the 100th Anniversary of Mercy Medical Center.

The original proclamation called for people to provide understanding, encouragement and opportunities to help persons with developmental disabilities to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

Community Service Award

On March 12th Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President Anthony Felicio, Jr., announced that he had received a congratulatory letter from New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association President Richard C. Iannuzzi. The NYSUT President informed Felicio that he was pleased to announce “… the selection of your local as a recipient of NYSUT’s Local Community Service award.”

Ianuzzi explained that this award recognizes the CTA’s collective, and sustained, contribution to community service during the 2012 calendar year. “Your participation in charitable events and community service exemplifies the purpose of this award”, continued the NYSUT leader. “Please extend congratulations to members of the local for their dedicated effort.

Their work in enriching the lives of community

members is laudatory, and worthy of this award.”

The award will be presented to Felicio, and the CTA, at the 2013 Representative Assembly, which will be held in Washington, DC, from April 11th-13th. Felicio announced the award to his members on March 12th by saying “On behalf of the Board of Directors, thank you for your support of our community endeavors.”

Feral Cat Program Launched

On March 9th, the Village of Islandia launched its feral cat TNR (trap, neuter, return) program.

Local volunteers and members of Guardians of Rescue, a nonprofit animal rescue group, helped bring in approximately 50 stray cats to Village Hall.

Volunteers from Helping Paw, a nonprofit animal welfare organization based in Commack, performed alterations on the cats

before bringing them back to their natural habitat.

The program was the idea of Josephine Palladino, a village resident. She expressed her concerns about the feral cat population in the village to Mayor Allan M. Dorman.

Soon after meeting with Ms. Palladino, Mayor Dorman announced the launch of the program.

The village’s financial support of the program

also shows the village’s commitment to maintaining the health and safety of these cats by reducing the cat population. According to the Humane Society, there are 50 million feral cats in existence in the United States.

Life Honor Roll

Connetquot Teachers Association (CTA) President, Anthony Felicio, Jr., is proud to announce the selection of Mrs. Erica Martino-Lattuga as a recipient of the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) Association Life Honor Roll award.

Felicio was notified by NYSUT Teachers (NYSUT) Association President Richard C. Iannuzzi that Martino-Lattuga has been “… recognized for her lifesaving actions while on duty at Connetquot H.S.” As a result of her quickthinking, she recognized that a student was having a seizure and had lost

consciousness. MartinoLattuga performed CPR on the student and was able to revive him, before paramedics arrived on the scene. At the time Erica was 6 ½ months pregnant, and as a result of her intercession, experienced major complications, putting herself and the health of her unborn child in jeopardy.

Erica was put on complete bed rest for the remainder of her pregnancy and, fortunately, this brave teacher and her baby are well. NYSUT has recognized Erica’s quick-thinking, and lifesaving reactions during

this potential crisis, by placing her name on the organization’s ‘Life Honor Roll’.

According to Felicio “Erica’s name will be inscribed on a plaque and displayed in the Suffolk NYSUT Regional office. Her name will also be scrolled during the NYSUT Representative Assembly, before 3,000 delegates, which will be held in Washington, DC, from April 11th-13th.

Congratulations to Erica for her heroic efforts, and richly deserved recognition.”

ENERGY TEXTS - Connetquot Central School District Idle Hour Elementary School 2nd grade students from Mrs. Cerulli’s class worked with 5th graders from Mrs. Bancroft’s class to construct personal informational “energy textbooks.” Each textbook covered a different type of energy, from sound to electrical to solar energy. The young authors did a thorough job with each textbook, including an illustrated cover, title page, dedication page, author biography, table of contents, headings, chapters, diagrams, photos, illustrations, captions, charts, glossary and index. The books were presented in the schools Atrium by the second-graders themselves.

Muratore also presented a departmentwide proclamation to Chief Joseph Leavens to express appreciation for the outstanding rescue efforts during and after the recent blizzard. “On Friday, February 8th, when the snow began to fall, the Selden Fire Department sprang into action,” explained Legislator Muratore. “From 11:30 p.m. through 4:00 a.m. the next morning, 87 stranded people were rescued and transported back to department headquarters,

which had been set up as a warming center. Those with hypothermia and diabetic emergencies were taken directly to the hospital, and the department remained on call and stood by for days, ready to respond to anybody in need.”

“It was an honor to give this well-deserved recognition. The men and women of Selden Fire Department go above and beyond the call of duty to serve their community and keep the public safe,” concluded Muratore.

Lee Xippolitos, RN, PhD, CARN, CS, NPP, CNAA, BC, Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Nursing, has received the Community Service Award from the Victims Information Bureau of Suffolk County (VIBS) in recognition of her efforts to establish the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Center at Stony Brook University Hospital (SBUH).

Dr. Xippolitos received the award “for her role in establishing a SANE Center at Stony Brook University and for partnering with VIBS to establish a training program for forensic nurse examiners,” said Pamela

Johnston, Executive Director of VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center. “These specially trained nurses provide compassionate healthcare to traumatized survivors, while collecting evidence that will be crucial for police investigation and the DA’s prosecution.”

“To be honored by VIBS is quite thrilling,” Dr. Xippolitos said in accepting the award during a March 7th ceremony in St. James. “The people that VIBS touches are people in need. Those who work at VIBS are pioneers in the field of intimate violence, and their services bring hope to thousands of individuals, adults and children on Long Island.”

A long-time volunteer with VIBS, Dr. Xippolitos helped establish the SANE Center at SBUH in 2009. The center is a collaborative effort among VIBS Family Violence and Rape Crisis Center, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook University Hospital, the Suffolk County Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Staffed by Registered Nurses with advanced education and critical preparation in the forensic examination of sexual assault victims, the center provides comprehensive evidence collection for more effective investigations and better prosecutions, while preserving the victim’s dignity and reducing psychological trauma.

Last year, Stony Brook’s SANE Center saw 121 victims in the hospital’s Emergency Department, Dr. Xippolitos said.

“Our School of Nursing continues to work closely with VIBS educational outreach programs,” Dr. Xippolitos said. In particular, she cited the work of Marie Ann

Marino, EdD, RN, PNP, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and a certified forensic nurse, who educates Stony Brook nurses who aspire to become SANE nurses. SANE nurses are on call 24 hours a day to meet the needs of victims who are brought into any of Suffolk County’s three SANE centers, located at Stony Brook, Good Samaritan Hospital and Peconic Bay Medical Center.

The SANE program has operated in Suffolk County since 1999.

“The work that these nurses do honors the victim’s right to make choices about medical and emotional care, as well as legal prosecution,” Dr. Xippolitos said.

A native of Brooklyn, NY, Dr. Xippolitos received her AS degree in Nursing from Farmingdale College. She received her bachelor of science and master of science in nursing degrees from Stony Brook University School of Nursing, and she completed her PhD in Nursing at Adelphi University. As Dean of the School of Nursing, she is responsible for more than 1,000 student nurses.

Dr. Xippolitos is certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and as a Nurse Practitioner in psychiatric nursing.

She is certified as a Nurse Administrator through the American Nurses Credentialing Board and is a member of American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and New York Organization of Nurse Executives, serving on AONE’s International Committee. She is a charter member and past president of Kappa Gamma Chapter, Sigma Theta Tau, International, the international honor society for nursing.

Fresh Air Fund Day In recognition of The Fresh Air Fund’s 137th summer of bringing together New York City children and volunteer host families in New York, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has recognized March 20th as Fresh Air Fund Day throughout the state. This summer, The Fresh Air Fund will once again allow thousands of inner-city boys and girls to escape the hot, noisy New York City streets to

enjoy the simple joys of summertime fun in the country!

Families who participate in The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family Program open their hearts and homes to New York City children for one or two weeks or more in the summer. “Sharing your home and the surrounding community with a Fresh Air youngster can be the beginning of a worthwhile and meaningful experience

– for both the child and your family,” says Jenny Morgenthau, Executive Director of The Fresh Air Fund. “This year, we are looking for new host families in Western Suffolk County, NY to celebrate our 137thsummer and give children a chance to run barefoot through the grass or gaze at the star-filled skies.”

Volunteers simply want to share what they have with city children and

introduce them to the joys of suburban or country life. “You don’t have to spend a lot of money or do anything fancy. The children can just play in the backyard and enjoy just being kids,” says Donna, a Fresh Air host.

Families find hosting so rewarding that more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited visit the same host families year after year. Firsttime Fresh Air visitors

are six to 12 years old and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community.

The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-forprofit organization, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.7 million innercity children since 1877.

Mrs. Kim Licato, Connetquot School District Chairperson of LOTE (languages other than English), and ESL (English as a Second Language) teacher Christine Allen, welcomed students, parents and teachers to the 19th Annual ESL Dinner on January 30th at Ronkonkoma Middle School (RMS).

Guests had the opportunity to mingle, chat, enjoy Internationally renowned cuisine (PIZZA!), and participate in an exciting ‘Reptile EdVenture’, by Erik Callendar!

Mrs. Licato said that “The students and parents enjoyed pizza and dessert and had an opportunity to learn all about different reptiles, insects and amphibians.

participated with Erik and were able to interact with animals from around the world.” The night was organized by the Connetquot ESL Department teachers and supervisors.

Mrs. Licato thanked the following teachers and administrators for supporting the annual ESL Dinner: Superintendent Dr. Alan B. Groveman, Director of Pupil Personnel Services Ms. Gail Santo, principals Mrs. Denise Toscano & Mr. Stu Pollak, and dedicated teachers Christine Allen, Brian Atkins, Loretta Powell, Mary Katherine Goldacker, and Andrea TiptonRudolph.

This 19th annual ESL dinner provided parents with the chance to meet and speak with the teachers and administrators who

work with their children.

It also allows Connetquot families the chance to make connections with others of similar, and different, cultural backgrounds.

Connetquot’s ESL program, a mini-United Nations in the middle of Suffolk County, consists of 85 students from Bangladesh, China, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, India, Pakistan, Poland, Turkey and Vietnam.

Connetquot’s ESL teachers enjoyed another opportunity to mingle with so many of their students and their families, and to thank the community for their support of a program that has helped so many students assimilate as Americans.
